Abstract

Gives a bibliographical review of the finite element methods (FEMs) applied for the linear and nonlinear, static and dynamic analyses of basic structural elements from the theoretical as well as practical points of view. The range of applications of FEMs in this area is wide and cannot be presented in a single paper; therefore aims to give the reader an encyclopaedic view on the subject. The bibliography at the end of the paper contains 2,025 references to papers, conference proceedings and theses/dissertations dealing with the analysis of beams, columns, rods, bars, cables, discs, blades, shafts, membranes, plates and shells that were published in 1992‐1995.

Abstract

While calculating internal forces of a structure resulting from temperature it is necessary to know thermal conduction and what goes hand in hand to determine temperature distribution at various points of the analysed structures. Finite strip method (FSM) is very suitable for the analysis of thermal conduction, heating, heat and temperature distribution in engineering structures, especially rectangular of identical edge conditions. The paper presents several examples of FSM application for the analysis of conduction and heat and temperature distribution for various types of engineering structures which can appear, among others, while welding several joined elements with welds made at specified speed as linear and point welds. Bars, shields, square and rectangular plates, steel orthotropic plates, steel and combined girders (steel‐concrete), box girders subject to various loads connected with heat and temperature (loaded with temperature, non‐uniformly heated surface). The obtained results may be useful in engineering practice for determining actual temperature and load capacity in individual elements of the construction.

Abstract

The localized strain softening behaviour of concrete has been modelled by two approaches: (i) the stiffness degrading model based on the total stress‐strain constitutive relationship, and (ii) the tangent softening model based on the incremental stress‐strain relationship. The models are implemented using a new softening initiation criterion proposed for application in multi‐dimensional finite element analysis. Parametric analyses on plain concrete beams, tested experimentally by other researchers, have been carried out to investigate the required numerical efforts, the mesh objectivity, and the energy dissipation characteristics of the structures. The stiffness degrading model is very stable even when applied with relatively coarse finite element meshes. However, the computational demand of this model is relatively high. The combination of a total stress‐strain constitutive relationship to compute the element responses, and an incremental relationship to formulate the stiffness matrix, appears to be computationally efficient and stable, provided that adequately refined finite element mesh is used to model the structure.

Categories in biomechanics included in this survey are: orthopaedic mechanics, dental mechanics, cardiovascular mechanics, soft tissue mechanics, biological flow, impact injury, and other fields of applications. More than 900 references are listed.

Abstract

This paper gives a review of the finite element techniques (FE) applied in the area of material processing. The latest trends in metal forming, non‐metal forming and powder metallurgy are briefly discussed. The range of applications of finite elements on the subjects is extremely wide and cannot be presented in a single paper; therefore the aim of the paper is to give FE users only an encyclopaedic view of the different possibilities that exist today in the various fields mentioned above. An appendix included at the end of the paper presents a bibliography on finite element applications in material processing for the last five years, and more than 1100 references are listed.

Abstract

An infinite element based on the doubly asymptotic approximation (DAA) for use in finite element analysis of fluid—structure interactions is presented. Fluid finite elements model the region near the solid. Infinite elements account for the effects of the outer fluid on the inner region. The DAA‐based infinite elements involve an approximate calculation of the added mass using static mapped infinite elements, plus a consistent damping term. Simple test analyses for a range of fluid properties demonstrate the performance of the solution technique. The analyses of a Helmholtz resonator (open pipe) and a circular plate in water indicate the practical use of the solution approach.
