Abstract

Purpose

Experiencing more frequent, system-wide disruptions, such as pandemics and geopolitical conflicts, supply chains can be largely destabilized by a lack of materials, services or components. Supply chain resilience (SCRES) constitutes the network ability to recover after and survive during such unexpected events. To enhance the understanding of SCRES as a system-wide quality, this study tests a comprehensive SCRES model with data from multiple industries.

Design/methodology/approach

The study proposes a theoretical framework conceptualizing SCRES as system quality, extending the classical proactive/reactive taxonomy by multiple system states consisting of the supply system properties, behaviors and responses to disruptions. Underlying hypotheses were tested using an online survey. The sample consists of 219 responses from German industries. Maximum likelihood structural equation modeling (ML-SEM) and moderation analysis were used for analyzing the survey data. The study was particularly designed to elaborate on supply chain theory.

Findings

Two pathways of parallel SCRES building were identified: proactive preparedness via anticipation and reactive responsiveness via agility. Both system responses are primarily built simultaneously rather than successively. The present study further provides empirical evidence on the central role of visibility and velocity in achieving comprehensive SCRES, while flexibility only exerts short-term support after a disruption. The study additionally points to potential “spillover effects” such as the vital role of proactive SCRES in achieving reactive responsiveness.

Originality/value

The present study confirms and expands existing theories on SCRES. While stressing the multidimensionality of SCRES, it theorizes the (inter-)temporal evolution of a system and offers practical guidelines for SCRES building in various industrial contexts. It thus supports the transformation toward more resilient and viable supply chains, contributing to the increasing efforts of middle-range theory building to achieve an overarching theory. The study also points to potential future research avenues.

Abstract

Purpose

The COVID-19 pandemic showed that preestablished contingency plans and resilience practices were insufficient to cope with long-term and global disruptions. Companies thus struggled to develop capabilities that ensure their survivability during similar crises. Building on the adaptation-based view (ABV) of supply chain resilience, this study aims to offer an in-depth perspective on survivability in supply chains (SCs).

Design/methodology/approach

The paper empirically tests related relationships between adaptation capabilities and practices that ensure operational continuity. Responses from 252 organisations were collected and analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling.

Findings

The results empirically support the ABV’s theoretical propositions and assess the possibilities of intertwining, digitalisation, a circular economy and maturity for the survivability of SCs.

Research limitations/implications

The derived insights are attractive for managers and researchers to foster supply chain survivability and contribute to the increasing efforts of middle-range theorising in logistics and supply chain management research.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is one of the first studies to define factors enhancing the survivability of SCs through the lens of the ABV.

Abstract

Purpose

Supply chain resilience capabilities are usually considered in light of some anticipated events and are as passive assets, which are “waiting” for use in case of an emergency. This, however, can be inefficient. Moreover, the current COVID-19 pandemic has revealed difficulties in the timely deployments of resilience assets and their utilization for value creation. We present a framework that consolidates different angles of efficient resilience and renders utilization of resilience capabilities for creation of value.

Design/methodology/approach

We conceptualise the design of the AURA (Active Usage of Resilience Assets) framework for post-COVID-19 supply chain management through collating the extant literature on value creation-oriented resilience and practical examples and complementing our analysis with a discussion of practical implementations.

Findings

Building upon and integrating the existing frameworks of VSC (Viable Supply Chain), RSC (Reconfigurable Supply Chain) and LCNSC (Low-Certainty-Need Supply Chain), we elaborate on a new idea in the AURA approach – to consider resilience as an inherent, active and value-creating component of operations management decisions, rather than as a passive “shield” to protect against rare, severe events. We identify 10 future research areas for lean resilience integrating management and digital platforms and technology.

Practical implications

The outcomes of our study can be used by supply chain and operations managers to improve the efficiency and effectiveness by turning resilience from passive, cost-driving assets into a value-creating, inclusive decision-making paradigm.

Originality/value

We propose a novel approach to bring more dynamics to the notion of supply chain resilience. We name our approach AURA and articulate its two major advantages as follows: (1) reduction of disruption prediction efforts and (2) value creation from resilience assets. We offer a discussion on ten future research directions towards a lean resilience.

Abstract

Purpose

The ripple effect (i.e. disruption propagation in networks) belongs to one of the central pillars in supply chain resilience and viability research, constituting a type of systemic disruption. A considerable body of knowledge has been developed for the last two decades to examine the ripple effect triggered by instantaneous disruptions, e.g. earthquakes or factory fires. In contrast, far less research has been devoted to study the ripple effect under long-term disruptions, such as in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Design/methodology/approach

This study qualitatively analyses secondary data on the ripple effects incurred in automotive and electronics supply chains. Through the analysis of five distinct case studies illustrating operational practices used by companies to cope with the ripple effect, we uncover a disruption propagation mechanism through the supply chains during the semiconductor shortage in 2020–2022.

Findings

Applying a theory elaboration approach, we sequence the triggers for the ripple effects induced by the semiconductor shortage. Second, the measures to mitigate the ripple effect employed by automotive and electronics companies are delineated with a cost-effectiveness analysis. Finally, the results are summarised and generalised into a causal loop diagram providing a more complete conceptualisation of long-term disruption propagation.

Originality/value

The results add to the academic discourse on appropriate mitigation strategies. They can help build scenarios for simulation and analytical models to inform decision-making as well as incorporate systemic risks from ripple effects into a normal operations mode. In addition, the findings provide practical recommendations for implementing short- and long-term measures during long-term disruptions.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to considered the problem of identification of temperature-dependent thermal conductivity in the nonstationary, nonlinear heat equation. To describe the heat transfer in the furnace charge occupied by a homogeneous porous material, the heat equation is formulated. The inverse problem consists in finding the heat conductivity parameter, which depends on the temperature, from the measurements of the temperature in fixed points of the material.

Design/methodology/approach

A numerical method based on the finite-difference scheme and the least squares approach for numerical solution of the direct and inverse problems has been recently developed.

Findings

The influence of different numerical scheme parameters on the accuracy of the identified conductivity coefficient is studied. The results of the experiment carried out on real measurements are presented. Their results confirm the ones obtained earlier by using other methods.

Originality/value

Novelty is in a new, easy way to identify thermal conductivity by known temperature measurements. This method is based on special finite-difference scheme, which gives a resolvable system of algebraic equations. The results sensitivity on changes in the method parameters was studies. The algorithms of identification in the case of a purely mathematical experiment and in the case of real measurements, their differences and the practical details are presented.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to review and organize the research articles which focused on the impact of COVID-19 pandemic in the supply chain (SC) domain through a bibliometric and network analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

Initially, a total of 772 research articles with selected keywords were retrieved from the Scopus database for the year 2020 (with the commencement of COVID-19 outbreak). After the filtration and refinement, 484 research articles were found relevant and unique. Further, this study systematically reviews and evaluates the 484 research articles including influential authors, keys journals, influential research work, and collaboration among the countries and institutes with the help of bibliometric analysis tool. The emergent research clusters are identified and established.

Findings

The findings reveal that the total number of related publications are steadily growing with the United States leading the way. European countries have made notable accomplishments as well. In addition, both the most cited publications and the keyword distribution provide research guidance for future research.

Practical implications

This study focuses on the need and advancement of the literature on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on SCs to frame a research agenda for researchers and practitioners.

Originality/value

The present study offers future research directions in the area of SC under the pandemic situation.

Abstract

Purpose

On modern markets, supply chains (SC) shape the competition landscape. At the same time, considerable research advancements have been recently achieved in the area of collaborative networks. Trends in information technology progress for networked systems include development of cyber‐physical networks, cloud service environments, etc. The purpose of this paper is to identify an inter‐disciplinary perspective and modelling tools for new generation SCs which will be collaborative cyber‐physical networks.

Design/methodology/approach

This study addresses the above‐mentioned research goal by first, developing a methodical vision of an inter‐disciplinary modelling framework for SCM based on the existing studies on SC operations, control and systems theories; and second, by integrating elements of different structures with structures dynamics within an adaptive framework based upon the authors' own research.

Findings

The inter‐disciplinary modelling framework for multi‐structural SCs has been developed. A new inter‐disciplinary level of model‐based decision‐making support in those SCs is claimed based on the integration of previously isolated problems and modelling tools developed in such disciplines like operations research, control theory, system dynamics, and artificial intelligence.

Originality/value

The novelty of this paper is the consideration of SC modelling in the context of collaborative cyber‐physical systems. This topic is particularly relevant for researchers and practitioners who are interested in future generation SCs. Particular focus is directed towards the multi‐structural SC modelling, structure dynamics, and inter‐disciplinary problems and models in future SCs. Challenges of integrated optimization in the organizational and informational context are discussed.

Abstract

Socio-economic, health and environmental turbulences experienced during the past decades have caused major value chain disruptions, triggering multinational enterprises (MNEs) to rethink the footprints of their global operations and redesign for resilience. These developments have fueled a rapidly expanding scholarly literature on resilience. Yet, its conceptual understanding and practical utility remain highly fragmented, cross-disciplinarily disconnected and ambiguous. This study explores the intellectual structure of resilience research in business and management, relying on a systematic literature review approach based on bibliometric techniques and content analysis. A unique database consisting of 545 peer-reviewed articles published in 65 leading Academic Journal Guide (AJG) journals are analyzed. Based on the findings, three leading research communities dominate the resilience discussion in business and management. Moreover, the intellectual structure of the field through the most productive authors and top cited journal articles is discussed. Based on the results, five potential research avenues are suggested.

Abstract

Composites reinforced by non-crimp fabrics (NCF) reach stiffness level close to the ideal cross-ply laminates with unidirectional plies, but damage behaviour of NCF-composites exhibit significant differences from the behaviour of the laminates with unidirectional plies (non-stitched laminates). The paper presents results of experimental studies of the initiation and development of damage in NCF-composites. Some of the observed phenomena can be explained and predicted using FE modelling of the composite deformation. Others are difficult to explain; they present a challenge for understanding the behaviour of NCF-composites. The materials are carbon/epoxy composites, reinforced by biaxial NCF 0°/90° and ±45°. Two different sets of fabrics (different producers) were used for the reinforcement, and the fibre volume fraction of the plates had two different levels: about 45% and about 55%. The samples were loaded in different directions in tension. Damage initiation and development was studied using acoustic emission and X-ray investigation.
