Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study was to investigate the hotel selection preferences of vegetarians in Turkey.
Design/methodology/approach
The questionnaire used in this study had four main sections: animal and environmentally friendly hotel attributes; hotel features and facilities; hotel food and beverage services; and demographic and travel information of respondents. Data were collected by way of face-to-face questionnaires from 328 self-identified vegetarians who visited the first vegan/vegetarian event – “Didim VegFest” – in Turkey on 29-30 April 2017.
Findings
Eco-animal friendly hotels, customer requests and animal friendly and environmental ethics (main Factor 1); comfort and value, facilities and security, the natural environment and the staff and their services (main Factor 2); standards and sanitation, sensibility, atmosphere and knowledge (main Factor 3) were identified as the main hotel selection factors of vegetarians in Turkey.
Originality/value
This study is the first of its kind in the tourism literature.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to uncover career-related issues that high-skilled female immigrants face and their strategies for rebuilding their careers upon migration for a diverse range of reasons including following a spouse, furthering education and self-initiated expatriation.
Design/methodology/approach
Using grounded theory to explore this topic, the authors performed 14 in-depth interviews with female immigrants that fit pre-determined inclusion criteria for high-skilled (e.g. educated, gainfully and professionally employed). The study context of immigration is the USA, and the authors performed interviews with high-skilled immigrants from Turkey – an underrepresented nation in the US migrant population.
Findings
Content analysis of in-depth interviews revealed five primary theoretical themes that captured the career experiences of these individuals: non-linear career entry, career orientation, strong commitment and will to succeed, socialization patterns at work and support network. Integrating these findings with theories on adult learning, the authors developed an experiential learning model of career reconstruction among high-skilled immigrants.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the global mobility literature by developing an experiential learning theory of careers and taking a gendered perspective to the career experiences of high-skilled female immigrants. It answers the questions: what are the individual and situation factors associated with career success among high-skilled female immigrants? and what is the process that high-skilled immigrants go through to rebuild their careers?

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to propose a model that examines the influences of expatriate community relationship building behaviors on community embeddedness and community embeddedness on expatriate retention cognitions. The authors further investigate the moderating role of organizational identification.
Design/methodology/approach
Survey data from 127 expatriates in the USA were collected and analyzed. The authors used multiple (moderator) hierarchical regression analyses to test the hypotheses. In addition, simple slopes analyses were conducted to further understand the interaction effects.
Findings
The results demonstrate that community relationship building behaviors positively influence expatriate community embeddedness, and the latter is associated with stronger retention cognitions. In addition, the paper finds that, for individuals who have lower levels of organizational identification, community embeddedness is particularly important.
Research limitations/implications
This study is based on cross-sectional and self-report data, which limits the ability to draw definitive conclusions about causality. Thus, more multi-source and longitudinal data from different expatriate populations would increase the validity and the generalizability of findings. The theory and empirical evidence indicate the importance of community embeddedness, particularly when organizational identification is low, for expatriates’ retention cognitions.
Practical implications
This study examines the important role of community relationship building behaviors on community embeddedness, and the role of community embeddedness in expatriates’ intention to stay.
Originality/value
This paper integrates the unique view of personal resources associated with different social contexts (i.e. community and organizational contexts) in expatriate studies.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to understand the impact of the recent recession on both the automotive manufacturer as well as their suppliers. The research aims to identify if the impact has been the same at each of the organizations, or if there has been a difference.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper carries out a case study research, into the need for suppliers to increase their responsiveness following recession and the impact this has had on supplier relations. Face-to-face semi-structured interviews were carried out at the vehicle manufacturer with two members of production control staff from VMUK plus seven production control staff at seven tier 1 suppliers to VMUK.
Findings
Supply chains have been enhanced through an increased level of responsiveness, following the economic downturn and supplier relations have had a positive impact post-recession.
Research limitations/implications
Literature argues that competitive advantage can be achieved through responsiveness, and that responsiveness is critical during a period of volatility and market uncertainty. Furthermore, literature also argues that competitive advantage can be achieved through positive supplier relations. This study investigates both of these arguments.
Originality/value
This study concludes that the positive supplier relations offer a competitive advantage when there is no cost advantage to be found elsewhere. Furthermore, this study concludes that as a direct impact of the recession, supplier relations have improved within the case studies investigated.

Abstract
Sparse attention has been paid to the inevitable processes of change that enable progress in today's globalizing urban centres, but also threaten their unique identity, historic memory, and cultural heritage. The aims of this work are to understand the urban dynamics that trigger these change processes, uncover their effects, and discuss how these changes can be utilized to achieve sustainable development. The case study, which uses a comparative mixed method strategy consisting of archival research, fieldwork, and semi-structured interviews, is the Kosuyolu Housing Settlement, a project dating to the 1950s that represents one of Istanbul's best examples of urban development and housing culture. Displaying the architectural and urban planning ideals of the Modern period, this settlement is a concrete example that reflects the period's considerations regarding social housing. Through this case, change in housing has been evaluated in terms of sustainability indicators. The derived evidences show the significant role of governance and the maintained land use pattern for the achievement of the sustainable development and these evidences are used to suggest the development of an adaption guide that will assist in sustainable development in the short term, and the creation of alternative scenarios that are flexible and easy to adapt, active, and based on participatory processes for the long term.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of the presence of independent board directors on financial performance in India.
Design/methodology/approach
This study used panel regression models on large listed Indian firms to investigate the impact on financial performance owing to the presence of independent directors.
Findings
The findings suggest that independent board directors in Indian contexts do not significantly affect financial performance.
Practical implications
This study has implications for the formulation of regulation related to appointment of independent directors and the extent of their representation on the board for them to be effective.
Social implications
The proportion of independent directors on the board of the firm is influenced by the trade-off between the cost of having independent directors on the board versus the benefits to the firm and society.
Originality/value
The impact of the presence of an independent director on financial performance in highly concentrated ownership remains ambiguous.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper investigates internal and external barriers influencing the different dimensions of firm service innovativeness and the moderating effect of transformational leadership on these relationships in an emerging economy, namely, Turkey.
Design/methodology/approach
The hypotheses were tested using cross-sectional survey data from 148 hotels. The authors use regressions to analyze the data set.
Findings
The results demonstrate that barriers to innovation need not necessarily impede firm service innovativeness at all times; some of these so-called “barriers” may even act as catalysts that improve firm’s likelihood of adopting innovations. More importantly, the findings suggest that a transformational leadership style alleviates the negative influence of internal barriers on internal service innovativeness dimensions of process, strategic and behavioral innovativeness.
Originality/value
The positive effect of transformational leadership lessening the detrimental impact of barriers to innovation is a topic in need of research. In addition to examining this phenomenon in a developing country, the authors choose a service retailing industry as a study context: hospitality/tourism. The main reason for choosing this industry is that there is little empirical evidence of service innovation activity in this industry despite the fact that it contributes to a large extent to employment and gross domestic product in most emerging economies, and it is, in fact, a fairly innovative industry. Furthermore, this study presents a unique perspective by investigating small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Abstract
Purpose
Borsa Istanbul 100 Index, known as BIST100, is the main indicator to measure the performance of the 100 highest stocks publicly traded in Borsa Istanbul concerning market and trading volume. BIST 100 index prediction is a popular research domain for its complex data structure caused by stock price, commodity, interest rate and exchange rate effects. The study proposed hybrid models using both Genetic, Particle Swarm Optimization, Harmony Search and Greedy algorithms from metaheuristic algorithms approach for dimension reduction, and MARS for prediction.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper aims to model in the simplest way through metaheuristic algorithms hybridized with the MARS model the effects of stock, commodity, interest and exchange rate variables on BIST 100 during the Covid-19 pandemic period (in the process of closing) between January 2020 and June 2021.
Findings
The most suitable hybrid model was chosen as PSO & MARS by calculating the RMSE, MSE, GCV, MAE, MAD, MAPE and R2 measurements of training, test and overall dataset to check every model's efficiency. Empirical results demonstrated that the proposed PSO & MARS hybrid modeling procedure gave results both as good as the MARS model and a simpler and non-complex model structure.
Originality/value
Using metaheuristic algorithms as a supporting tool for variable selection can help to identify important independent variables and contribute to the establishment of more non-complex models.ing, test and overall dataset to check every model's efficiency.

Purpose
This paper explores the orchestration of digital innovation in Industry 4.0 organisations.
Design/methodology/approach
The study applies the activity theory to explorative multiple case studies. Observations of innovation activities in five business cases take place at two large international organisations.
Findings
The results underline five logics of action that drive digital innovation: (1) digital transformation, (2) technology translation, (3) catalyst agents, (4) digital thread and (5) empowerment. Further, the case study organisations highlight the importance of developing a sustainable culture capable of continuously adopting new technologies, processes and infrastructure that will allow the management of digital innovations.
Originality/value
The study empirically shows the motivations and challenges in orchestrating digital innovation in Industry 4.0 organisations.
