Abstract

Purpose

The space-time variants algorithm will not give good results in practical scenarios; when no tubes increase, these techniques will not give the results. It is challenging to reduce the energy of the output synopsis videos. In this paper, a new optimized technique has been implemented that models and covers every frame in the output video.

Design/methodology/approach

In the video synopsis, condensing a video to produce a low frame rate (FR) video using their spatial and temporal coefficients is vital in complex environments. Maintaining a database is also feasible and consumes space. In recent years, many algorithms were proposed.

Findings

The main advantage of this proposed technique is that the output frames are selected by the user definitions and stored in low-intensity communication systems and also it gives tremendous support to the user to select desired tubes and thereby stops the criterion in the output video, which can be further suitable for the user's knowledge and creates nonoverlapping tube-oriented synopsis that can provide excellent visual experience.

Research limitations/implications

In this research paper, four test videos are utilized with complex environments (high-density objects) and show that the proposed technique gives better results when compared to other existing techniques.

Originality/value

The proposed method provides a unique technique in video synopsis for compressing the data without loss.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is two‐fold: to provide guidance on how to present persuasive web site redesign presentations to library stakeholders; and to introduce screen capture software as an effective and persuasive tool for usability studies to both record data and promote redesign recommendations to library stakeholders.

Design/methodology/approach

Includes a review of the literature summarizing effective techniques used to create persuasive presentations and recounts how Camtasia Studio, Techsmith's screen capture software, was employed by the Usability Committee at Texas A&M University Libraries to record usability tests and present the committee's redesign recommendations to library administration and staff.

Findings

Screen capture software in conjunction with effective presentations can have a positive impact on library‐wide buy‐in for web site redesign initiatives.

Originality/value

Will be of interest to usability committees who want to streamline data recording and distribution techniques, as well as provide colleagues with a more compelling “data‐rich” option for the presentation of findings.

Abstract

Purpose

In the disaster mitigation community, one of the most important tasks is that of information transfer prior to, and following natural disasters. The purpose of this research project was to increase the understanding of key aspects (such as attractiveness and educational value) that influence the utility and effectiveness of educational media tools for home resilience during hurricanes.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of three types of educational media were developed – pulp board coasters, tri‐fold pamphlets, and a web hosted video. The contents of these media were developed based on data from federal agencies, as well as scholarly articles and technical reports to form an inclusive body of information. Several focus groups of homeowners and potential homeowners were held to evaluate participant's preference of these three media tools with regards to their usefulness for making homes safer during natural disasters, specifically during wind and wind‐driven rain events (e.g. hurricanes).

Findings

Analysis of the focus groups indicate that media use (based on disaster prevention home resilience practices) is highly dependent on the target audience or the stakeholder group (e.g. consumers look for different information content as compared to the builders). While all three media were indicated by the participants to have merit, the pamphlet was preferred aesthetically and was most likely to be used by homeowners. In addition, the study found that the usefulness of the tools depends on the ease of understanding and implementation of the best practices and ease of access to the tools (targeted location for each media).

Research limitations/implications

The findings of the study have implications for the entire disaster educational community. Although the findings are mostly qualitative and the small sample used in the focus groups limits the generalize ability to the entire population of the USA, nevertheless, future educational information and tools used should follow easy to understand language, be illustrated with examples and pictures, and be placed at convenient locations for homeowners to access.

Originality/value

By understanding how to better reach homeowners with information on home resilience, information can be more effectively disseminated to the public which allows for efficient use of tools as well as funds.

Abstract

Considers the implementation of the customer care campaign within Asda, as a response to the results of a MORI survey of Asda staff and customers. The staff training programme took place between 1985 and 1987 with the stated aim of providing enjoyable and convenient shopping for customers. The campaign covered four phases: awareness; education; training; and follow‐up. Its success was measured in terms of increased customer loyalty; a reduction in the number of complaints against staff; and a lower rate of staff turnover.

Abstract

Despite widespread enthusiasm for video technology in teacher education and a great deal of development and use of videos for this purpose, relatively little systematic research has been conducted on the feasibility and effectiveness of various types and uses of video for various teacher education purposes. Much of the research that is available on educational applications of video technology is focused on the use of video in K-12 teaching or in business and industrial training, rather than in teacher education. Furthermore, much of the research on video in teacher education has been limited to studies of relatively global perceptions of its value. These studies indicate that preservice instructors and students, as well as inservice professional development leaders and participating teachers, typically report positive responses to the video components of the program. Authors typically describe what was included in the video component and how it was used by participants. However, they rarely assess the relative effectiveness of different types or uses of video, let alone consider the trade-offs embedded in these alternatives if used to pursue contrasting educational purposes and goals.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to review the latest management developments across the globe and pinpoint practical implications from cutting-edge research and case studies.

Design/methodology/approach

This briefing is prepared by an independent writer who adds their own impartial comments and places the articles in context.

Findings

Some videos go viral on YouTube, a social media user platform which attracts more than 100 new uploads every minute. This article examines factors that play a key role in the virality phenomenon and – without considering actual content – looks at why some videos take off in quite extraordinary ways.

Practical implications

The paper provides strategic insights and practical thinking that have influenced some of the world’s leading organizations.

Originality/value

The briefing saves busy executives and researchers hours of reading time by selecting only the very best, most pertinent information and presenting it in a condensed and easy-to-digest format.

Abstract

Purpose of this paper

Reviews the latest management developments across the globe and pinpoints practical implications from cutting-edge research and case studies.

Design/methodology/approach

This briefing is prepared by an independent writer who adds their own impartial comments and places the articles in context.

Findings

One of the features of modern business is the increased involvement of customers in product and service development. Managers are consistently being told to engage with customers more and create a feedback loop so that what they develop can be enhanced. Articles in glossy executive magazines recommend this approach; product managers recommend this approach; it seems that any firm that did not include its users in enhancing its latest offering is doomed to failure. And yet, what evidence are there that such approaches actually benefit the bottom line? Like many developments in corporate culture previously, does the inclusion of customers in product development make sense, or is it simply another corporate fad?

Practical implications

Provides strategic insights and practical thinking that have influenced some of the world’s leading organizations.
