Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the importance and effect of asymmetric technological collaborationsā€™ key success factors in developing countries. The number of collaborations between large enterprises and SMEs, known as asymmetric technological collaborations (ATC) is growing considerably. But this asymmetry in itself can increase the number and intensity of collaboration challenges. So far, limited studies have been conducted on the stability of ATCs, and most of them have been in the context of developed countries. Meanwhile, studying the strength and stability of collaboration in the nano industry with growing market value and increasing newcomers is of particular importance.

Design/methodology/approach

Here, with bionic engineering approach, we used chemistry for the first time to identify the main stability factors of ATCs and build our hypotheses and research model. To this end, we introduced the factors affecting the stability of the dative chemical bond as a bionic counterpart of corporate venture capital (CVC), which is a type of ATC, and proposed 4 hypotheses. We used structural equation modeling (SEM) with partial least squares (PLS) method to examine the hypothesized relationships.

Findings

The analysis of survey questionnaire data from 26 asymmetric collaborations in Iranā€™s nanotechnology industry shows that ā€œlearning of the acceptor companyā€ with a negative effect, ā€œnetwork tiesā€ and ā€œdevelopment of the collaboration host regionā€ with a positive effect and ā€œdiversity in the collaboration portfolioā€ with an inverted U-shaped effect are the most influential factors in the stability and continuity of CVCs, respectively.

Originality/value

The findings of this research can be the beginning of a broad path leading to exploring and getting inspiration from chemistry to analyze management issues.

Abstract

Purpose

Collaboration is an important way for scientific research. It attracts a large number of researchers, and forms a series of measurement evaluation indicators. The purpose of this study further enriches the evaluation system of collaboration and provides new indicators to measure collaboration ability at author level in order to identify the most appropriate potential partners.

Design/methodology/approach

The papers published during the period 2006-2015 and collected from Web of Science Core Collection in library and information science (LIS) are regarded as data source. And it defines and measures the collaborative rate, collaborative breadth and collaborative depth at author level.

Findings

The authorsā€™ research shows that collaboration is an important way in the scientific research activities in LIS. Unfortunately, most authorā€™s collaborative breadth and the collaborative depth are lower than mean. Therefore, the authorā€™s scope and stability of collaboration is further strengthened in future. Authors can identify the most appropriate potential partners according to authorā€™s research purpose and the region of the collaborative breadth ā€“ the collaborative depth.

Originality/value

It further enriches the evaluation system of collaboration and provides new indicators to evaluate collaboration ability at author level. Authors can identify the most appropriate potential partners according to authorā€™s collaboration ability.

Abstract

Purpose

Why do collaborations between direct competitors fail and what are the risks? To enhance our understanding about the sources that generate diverse risks of failure of coopetition (cooperation between competitors), this study examined the effect of influential power each partner exercise in the industry on the unexpected dissolution of joint venture (JV) between direct competitors.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employed event history analysis to test the hypotheses using a sample of 188 coopetitive JVs between 2001 and 2010 and data on their survival for the following 5-year window.

Findings

The results show that as firms become more powerful within the industry, they have more incentives to cooperate with competitors to maintain their current JVs than to pursue their self-interest through opportunistically dissolving collaborations, which ultimately reduces the risk of failure of coopetition.

Originality/value

Scholars have often considered why firms cooperate with competitors and how coopetition creates value for firms but paid less attention regarding why coopetition unexpectedly dissolves. Based on transaction cost economics and the situational assumption of mixed-motive interaction, this study provides insight into how the different levels of influence each partner can exercise within the industry cause firms to have different incentives to cooperate with competitors.

Abstract

Purpose

Organizations increasingly form or join collaborations to gain access to resources paramount for achieving a sustained competitive advantage. This paper aims to propose an extension to the established dependency network diagram (DND) technique to better facilitate analysis, design and, ultimately, strategic management of such collaborations.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the resource dependence theory, the constructs of power and secondary dependency are operationalized and integrated into the original DND technique. New rules and an updated algorithm for how to construct extended DNDs are provided.

Findings

The value of the proposed extension of the DND technique is illustrated by analysis of an application hosting collaboration case study from the Australian financial service industry.

Research limitations/implications

This study provides preliminary evidence for strategically managing resource collaborations. Future research could further test empirically the usefulness of the proposed extension of the DND technique and how much it contributes to better understanding resource collaborations.

Practical implications

The proposed extension of the DND technique enables managers to perform a broader analysis of dependencies among participants in a collaboration, helping them to more accurately comprehend the relationships between the entities in their collaborative environment and, thus, being in a better position of strategically managing resource dependencies.

Originality/value

The proposed extension of the DND technique makes a central contribution to the extant literature by adding a strategic dimension to a visualization technique used to represent collaborative environments.

Abstract

Purpose

Green innovation in supply chains is crucial for socioeconomic development and stability. Factors that influence collaborative green innovation in the supply chain are complex and diverse. Exploring the main influencing factors and their mechanisms is essential for promoting collaborative green innovation in supply chains. Therefore, this study analyzes how upstream and downstream enterprises in the supply chain collaborate to develop green technological innovations, thereby providing a theoretical basis for improving the overall efficiency of the supply chain and advancing green innovation technology.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on evolutionary game theory, this study divides operational scenarios into pure market and government-regulated operations, thereby constructing collaborative green innovation relationships in different scenarios. Through evolutionary analysis of various entities in different operational scenarios, combined with numerical simulation analysis, we compared the evolutionary stability of collaborative green innovation behavior in supply chains with and without government regulation.

Findings

Under pure market mechanisms, the higher the green innovation capability, the stronger the willingness of various entities to collaborate in green innovation. However, under government regulation, a decrease in green innovation capability increases the willingness to collaborate with various entities. Environmental tax rates and green subsidy levels promote collaborative innovation in the short term but inhibit collaborative innovation in the long term, indicating that policy orientation has a short-term impact. Additionally, the greater the penalty for collaborative innovation breaches, the stronger the intention to engage in collaborative green innovation in the supply chain.

Originality/value

We introduce the factors influencing green innovation capability and social benefits in the study of the innovation behavior of upstream and downstream enterprises, expanding the research field of collaborative innovation in the supply chain. By comparing the collaborative innovation behavior of various entities in the supply chain under a pure market scenario and government regulations, this study provides a new perspective for analyzing the impact of corresponding government policies on the green innovation capability of upstream and downstream enterprises, enriching theoretical research on green innovation in the supply chain to some extent.

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the antecedents of recombinant innovation from the perspective of egoā€“network dynamics, and further disentangle whether egoā€“network stability or egoā€“network expansion is more conducive to recombinant innovation under heterogeneous knowledge base.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper uses 1,801 patent data in Chinaā€™s biotechnology field as a sample and adopts fixed effects regression model to examine the effects of egoā€“network dynamics on recombinant innovation and further uses the Wald tests to discern which egoā€“network dynamic is more conducive to recombinant innovation under heterogeneous knowledge base.

Findings

The empirical results indicate that egoā€“network dynamics have a positive impact on recombinant innovation. Specifically, for firms with high knowledge breadth and high knowledge depth as well as high knowledge breadth and low knowledge depth, egoā€“network stability is more conducive to recombinant innovation. By contrast, for firms with low knowledge breadth and high knowledge depth, recombinant innovation benefits more from egoā€“network expansion. As for firms with low knowledge breadth and low knowledge depth, both egoā€“network stability and egoā€“network expansion can promote recombinant innovation, while the effects are not significant.

Practical implications

This research may enlighten managers to choose suitable egoā€“network dynamics strategies for recombinant innovation based on their knowledge base.

Originality/value

This research not only contributes to the literature on recombinant innovation by revealing the impact of different egoā€“network dynamics on recombinant innovation but also contributes to network dynamics theory by exploring whether egoā€“network stability or egoā€“network expansion is more conducive to recombinant innovation under a heterogeneous knowledge base.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to increase the understanding of social and technical factors contributing to successful supplierā€retailer collaboration. The objective is to identify the necessary supply chain architecture for supplierā€retailer collaboration, and demonstrate how it influences supply chain performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Five pairs of suppliers and retailers in Taiwan were studied with each pair serving as a unit of analysis. In each case, data pertaining to eight relationship variables critical to collaboration between supplier and retailer were collected and analyzed. A comprehensive supplierā€retailer relationship model is developed with five specific research positions: supplierā€retailer business relationship (interdependence, intensity, trust) affects longā€term orientation; supplierā€retailer business relationship affects supply chain architecture (information sharing, inventory system, information technology capabilities, coordination structure); longā€term orientation affects supply chain architecture; supply chain architecture affects the level of supplierā€retailer collaboration; and supplierā€retailer collaboration enhances supplierā€retailer performance.

Findings

Overall, with the exception of duration, all variables are found to be critical to supplierā€retailer collaboration. It is the intensity, as opposed to the duration, of the relationship that influences the retailerā€supplier relationship.

Originality/value

The proposed model demonstrates how eight critical social and technical variables are directly and/or indirectly related. This knowledge will enable the management of supplierā€retailer networks to produce better supply chain collaboration and performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to evaluate the collaboration quality performance of sugar company Z and its stakeholders (farmers and distributors) by considering the sustainability aspects. This assessment shall be able to integrate qualitative and quantitative factors in the model, which is critical in sugar supply chains involving multi-stakeholders.

Design/methodology/approach

Integration of quality function deployment (QFD), the fuzzy analytical network process (FANP) and the data envelopment analysis (DEA) is administered to assess the efficiency score of each stakeholder involved. The evaluation encompasses collaboration behaviour factors since the input of collaboration activities will result in sustainability aspects such as revenue, green house gas (GHG) emissions and social impact. The analysis has been conducted in two scenarios, those are the basic scenario by utilising original data and the extended scenario by using projection data.

Findings

The result clarifies that the most influential behaviour factor in the collaboration activities is commitment (0.116), while the least important behaviour factors are power (0.008) and adaptation (0.008). Furthermore, by using the extended scenario, the overall efficiency for each benchmarking is higher compared to the condition before the improvement (basic scenario).

Research limitations/implications

The result of this study is only relevant to the particular sugar supply chain and involving limited sustainability variables. Therefore, in a further study, more variables such as technical and financial aspects could be explored further in the assessment process.

Practical implications

The result of this study is available for each stakeholder and can be fundamental for the constant improvement in sustainable supply chain (SSC) practices. It shows that an improvement of one stakeholder will positively impact the entire system.

Social implications

Smallholders and sugarcane farmers will recognise the significance of collaboration behaviour. Thus, they can enhance their mutual benefits by using the existing resources.

Originality/value

This paper arranges for a practical contribution by implementing advanced assessment methods in the sugar supply chain by taking into account the economic, environmental and social aspects. This comprehensive assessment process in the sugar supply chain is the novelty of this paper.

This paper aims to provide academics and practitioners working with collaboration of technology information and innovation with a review of key interfirm-collaboration topics, such as the determinants of innovation activity, innovation, imitation, the impact of competition, collaboration versus competition and a review of game theoretic approaches.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper is a comprehensive review of extant literature, conducted and analyzed systematically.

Findings

This paper highlights that when firms absorb collaboration opportunities that involves information, there are critical elements for success, which need to be considered, including economies of scale, knowledge sharing, market size and volatility, strategic partner selection, intellectual property rights, spillover effects, collaboration costs, trust and commitment, opportunism and overall collaboration strategy.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to existing information literature by emphasizing various game theoretic approaches, which highlight how collaboration costs are shared when collaboration occurs. In conclusion, ten managerial implications are offered about collaboration of information technological innovation.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the cooperation between firms as an important phenomenon, particularly within entrepreneurial strategies. This paper describes the results of an empirical study about SMEs (small and mediumā€sized enterprises) in the textile and clothing sector in Portugal. The results show that the level of cooperation between SMEs is limited in extent. When cooperation exists between the firms, the empirical results obtained reveal a great number of agreements in the production area so that subcontracting is the form of collaboration most commonly adopted. The SMEs prefer to cooperate with local firms because they know each other and share the same cultural background. The empirical results also allow us to conclude that the cooperative agreements are mainly informal; and that their stability is ensured and guaranteed by trust and communication between the partners.
