Abstract

This paper proposes a probit regression with autocorrelated errors (PAR) to estimate the reaction function of monetary policy in Taiwan using newly constructed binary monetary indicators. We develop a practical sampling scheme via the Gibbs sampling algorithm with data augmentation to make posterior inference of the binary monetary policy reaction function. In contrast to the conventional approach, our method avoids the problem of multiple integrals by directly drawing values of latent variables from the relevant full conditional density along with all the other parameters. Empirical results show that the monetary authority responds to macroeconomic conditions asymmetrically. Specifically, in the high‐inflation regime, a contractionary monetary policy is implemented to reduce the inflation rate. Once inflation is under control, that is, in the low‐inflation regime, attention is paid to stimulating the growth of the economy.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper analyses the role of accounting information quality on leverage adjustments. More specifically, the authors investigate whether a better accounting information leads to a higher speed of adjustment to the target financial leverage.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use a two-step method. They first estimate the target financial structure and then the influence of accruals quality on the speed of adjustment to this target. The study sample consists of French listed companies in the CAC All-Tradable index. The sample contains 210 companies and 1,713 observations.

Findings

Accounting literature showed the positive influence of accounting quality on financial management. The study findings are in line with these results. The authors give evidence of that a better quality of accruals is associated with a greater speed of adjustment.

Research limitations/implications

A common limitation in this field is the use of proxies. This makes results harder to generalize. For this reason, the authors implemented several models to improve the robustness of their results.

Practical implications

The authors give evidence that firms have an incentive to disclose a good-quality accounting information. A weak accounting quality prevents firms from adjusting their leverage to their financial target and therefore reduce their value.

Social implications

This work shows the need for accounting standardization bodies to strive to produce accounting standards allowing the production of high-quality accounting information. In a teaching dimension, these results highlight the importance in corporate finance of acquiring expertise in quality accounting information analysis.

Originality/value

This work is original because the authors study the influence of accounting quality on speed of adjustments of firms operating in the same legal environment and using the same accounting standards, when previous work compared different accounting frameworks. The French context is characterized by the weakness of market mechanisms and the important role of banks. These characteristics are known to reduce the role of accounting information in financing process. This result is interesting because the authors demonstrate that firms operating in this context still have an incentive in producing high accounting quality information.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine overall customer satisfaction associated with medical service quality in Taiwan by integrated Kano’s model and customer satisfaction index model. Another purpose was to confirmed nonlinear and asymmetric relationship of Customer Satisfaction and Quality Performance by the research outcome. By analyzing 1,100 patients or their family members, this study used the structural equation model (SEM) with AMOS software for data analysis. The results show that must‐be attributes, one‐dimensional attributes and attractive attributes had a direct effect on overall customer satisfaction, Surprisingly, overall customer satisfaction had positively influenced customer loyalty customer satisfaction had negatively influenced customer complaints. The study also found that customer complaints have direct effect on customer loyalty. Importantly, the study found out the must‐be attributes, the attractive attributes and one‐dimensional attributes increased, the level of overall customer satisfaction also increased. The customer satisfaction positively influences customer loyalty in medical service quality in Taiwan. The findings might reveal new insights for researchers dealing with quality of medical service and for hospital managers who devote resources exclusively to achieving highest possible levels of patient satisfaction.

Abstract

Purpose

To verify the effectiveness of the monetary policy, the impacts of monetary instruments on overnight spread under the interest rate corridor (IRC) are examined. The People's Bank of China (PBC) has operated the IRC since 2014. To understand the impacts of monetary instruments on overnight spread before and after the IRC framework, the complete samples are divided into two periods.

Design/methodology/approach

To model the overnight spread, an exponential GARCH (EGARCH) approach is used which can examine the interbank market interest rates for monetary policy purposes. The overnight money market plays an important role in the implementation of monetary policy.

Findings

Chinese interest rate liberalization and the implementation of IRC affect the overnight spread in the short-term financing market. Before the implementation of the IRC, the key factor to affect the overnight spread is mainly affected by the PBC's monetary policy control on the liquidity supply side. After the implementation of IRC, the overnight spread can be the largest part explained by the liquidity demand side and the PBC's multiple monetary instruments have significant impacts on the reduction of overnight spread.

Originality/value

The overnight spread has recently been influenced by various factors that are directly or closely related to the monetary policy instruments and the interest rate policy of the PBC. Chinese interest rate liberalization and the implementation of interest rate corridor policy affect the overnight spread in the short-term financing market.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to use high‐tech companies in Taiwan as research subjects to verify the fit of the commitment‐trust theory and explore the supply chain relationships among research variables.

Design/methodology/approach

The key mediating variables model (KMV) proposed by Morgan and Hunt is applied to construct the research structure, hypotheses, and questionnaire. The research hypotheses are validated through structural equation modelling and confirmatory factor analysis.

Findings

Research results show that for two parties of an exchange relationship, higher levels of trust can lead to better interactions and trust is an important factor affecting their supply chain partnerships. It helps increase interests of both parties, facilitate constant co‐operation and communication, and reduce uncertainties. Higher levels of commitment can also help increase value benefits, reduce a partner's propensity to leave, and enhance supply chain co‐operation efficiency.

Originality/value

Empirical results indicate that relationship marketing is a strategy that promotes trust and commitment of partners in high‐tech industries. While information sharing and communication can increase partners' intention of long‐term co‐operation, functional conflicts can facilitate positive interactions and reduce uncertainties. Through relationship marketing, high‐tech companies can create win‐win strategic alliances to develop their competitive advantages in the market.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the public’s acceptance of film-induced tourism and develops the relationship among placement marketing, involvement, place attachment and travel intention. The film Your Love Song shot in the Hualien and Taitung regions in Taiwan was selected as the case study.

Design/methodology/approach

An online sample survey was conducted using a structured questionnaire, and statistical tests and overall structural equation modeling analysis using the SPSS and AMOS statistical software packages, respectively, were performed.

Findings

This study results demonstrate that destination placement marketing has a significant positive effect on the level of destination involvement, place attachment and travel intention of viewers. Moreover, the level of involvement has some intermediary effect on the interrelationship between placement marketing and travel intention. Hence, this study suggests that relevant government agencies and tourism operators should promote local tourism through films and television shows and attract more tourists by retaining the original shooting scenes.

Originality/value

While previous studies have only analyzed two or three of the four concepts of film-induced tourism, placement marketing, travel intention, involvement and place attachment, this study completely integrates these four concepts and proves the correlation between them.

Abstract

Purpose

Kano's model is extensively applied in industry and by researchers. However, the model has a shortcoming in that enterprises cannot use it to evaluate the influences of quality attributes on product precisely; the lack of consideration of the different attribute strengths among 25 possible outcomes affects judgment of the categories in Kano's evaluation sheet. The aim of this study is to measure the quality attribute strength of 25 possible outcomes in the evaluation sheet to develop a new Kano's evaluation sheet to improve the accuracy of the classification of the quality attributes.

Design/methodology/approach

This study develops a new Kano's evaluation sheet, and defines the canonical and non‐canonical judgment of the evaluation sheet based on a novel “similarity” calculation which calculates the response frequency and the distance between canonical judgment and non‐canonical judgment.

Findings

Quality attribute strength is probed and compared with the traditional Kano's evaluation sheet. The new Kano's evaluation sheet is more practical because it supports a precise judgment of the category of quality attributes. Empirical results also demonstrate that the new Kano's evaluation sheet is practical.

Originality/value

The new evaluation sheet presents not only a different logic of classification and statistical method for analyzing quality attributes, but also reviewed judgments of the category of quality attributes from Kano's traditional evaluation sheet.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to treat bloggers as human brands and applies self-congruity theory to explore how actual and ideal blogger-reader self-congruity, combined with the blog’s functional congruity, influences blogger-reader relationship quality (BRRQ) and the blogger’s informational influence, taking perceived interactivity among blog members as a moderator.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a survey of 372 female beauty blog readers, this study employs the structural equation modelling approach to investigate the proposed model.

Findings

The empirical findings indicate that readers’ perceived self-congruity with beauty bloggers raises the bloggers’ informational influence, mediated by BRRQ and functional congruity. Actual self-congruity has greater predictive power than ideal self-congruity in explaining bloggers’ informational influence. Moreover, perceived interactivity plays a two-sided role because it strengthens the positive impact of BRRQ on informational influence but weakens the positive impact of functional congruity on informational influence.

Practical implications

The findings should help marketers identify influential beauty bloggers through their presented image on their blogs to encourage readers’ acceptance of their opinions about products and services. However, when focusing on beauty blogs featuring high-perceived interactivity among blog members, marketers should carefully balance the facilitating and offsetting effect of perceived interactivity and identify bloggers equipped with superior BRRQ.

Originality/value

Using human brand and parasocial interaction perspectives, this study contributes to emerging research on human brands and blog marketing and demonstrates that perceived interactivity is a double-edged sword in stimulating a blogger’s informational influence.

Abstract

Purpose

A chaotic system is a nonlinear deterministic system that displays complex, noisy‐like and unpredictable behavior. The interest in chaotic systems lies mostly upon their complex, unpredictable behavior, and extreme sensitivity to initial conditions as well as parameter variations. Based on wavelet neural network's (WNN) online approximation ability, the purpose of this paper is to propose an adaptive Gaussian wavelet neural control (AGWNC) system to control a chaotic system.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed AGWNC system is composed of a wavelet neural controller and a compensation tangent controller. The wavelet neural controller utilizes a Gaussian WNN to mimic an ideal controller, and the compensation tangent controller is designed to compensate the approximation error between the ideal and the wavelet neural controllers. The controller parameters of the proposed AGWNC can online tune in the Lyapunov sense, thus the uniformly ultimately bounded stability of closed‐loop system can be guaranteed.

Findings

The proposed AGWNC system is applied to a chaotic system. Simulation results are used to demonstrate the effectiveness and performance of the proposed AGWNC scheme. Simulation results show that not only the favorable control performance can be achieved but also the control efforts without any chattering phenomena. Moreover, all controller parameters can be online tuning by the derived adaptive laws based on the Lyapunov function.

Originality/value

The proposed AGWNC approach is interesting for the design of an intelligent control scheme. The main contributions of this paper are: the overall closed‐loop control system is globally stable in uniform ultimate boundedness; the tracking error can be asymptotically attenuated to a desired small level around zero by appropriate chosen parameters and learning rates; and the AGWNC system can achieve favorable tracking performance.

Abstract

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) aims to analyze possible impact upon manufacturing process and availability of products, and also study the environmental considerations and potential influence during entire life cycle ranging from procurement, production and utilization to treatment (namely, from cradle to tomb). Based on high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe manufacturing of company A, this case study would involve evaluation of environmental influence during the production process. When the manufacturing process has been improved during “production process” and “forming cooling” stage, it is found that capital input on “electric power” and “water supply” could be reduced, thus helping to sharpen the competitive power of company A, and also ensure sustainable economic and industrial development in accordance with national policies on environmental protection.
