Abstract

Purpose

Calling is typically associated with more intrinsic than extrinsic work motivation. This could give the impression that employees with a calling do not need or care about external rewards. To deepen the understanding of the relationship between calling and work motivation, the purpose of this paper is to test how calling is combined with different types of work motivation and how such combinations affect work outcomes differentially.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors applied latent profile analysis among Chinese employees with diverse occupations (N = 1,290), to identify calling and work motivation profiles and test their relations with work outcomes, assessed four months later.

Findings

Four profiles emerged: externally motivated low calling, moderately externally motivated calling, moderately motivated calling and highly motivated calling. Employees with weaker and stronger callings indicated being extrinsically motivated for work. Employees in the highly motivated calling profile exhibited highest job satisfaction, lowest cynicism and lowest turnover intentions, followed by employees in the moderately motivated calling profile, the moderately externally motivated calling profile and the externally motivated low calling profile.

Research limitations/implications

The findings imply that employees with a strong calling do care about external rewards and also benefit from external incentives to work.

Originality/value

This study is the first to explore the differential relationship between calling and work motivation. Moreover, the findings offer insights regarding the under-researched notion that different types of calling predict work outcomes differently.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to employ a user-centered approach to identify subgroups of people with similar profiles based on their perceptions of multiple dimensions of digital products' coolness and to test the differences across subgroups in the intention to use these products.

Design/methodology/approach

In Study 1, 1,161 adults rated a virtual digital product on four dimensions of coolness. In Study 2, 660 college students made similar ratings and also reported their intention to use a real digital product. Participants' ratings were analyzed using a user-centered approach, namely latent profile analysis.

Findings

Study 1 identified groups of participants who had similar profiles of product ratings on the four dimensions of coolness: niche cool, mass cool, uncertain cool and uncool. Study 2 replicated the findings of Study 1 and in addition showed that these groups varied in their intention to use the product and in whether a specific dimension increased or decreased this intention.

Research limitations/implications

The cross-sectional data preclude inferences about causality, calling for experimental or longitudinal research. Additionally, future research should explore whether the results generalize to other product categories and other age groups.

Practical implications

Managers should design digital products, segment the market and develop flexible strategies based on combined responses to dimensions of coolness perception.

Originality/value

The present research employed a user-centered approach to identify groups of people who share similar patterns of coolness perception. This study provides new insight that was not available in variable-centered research.

Abstract

Purpose

An important issue in the management of a web‐based user community, where users are registered to a web portal, is to identify patterns of users' interest. In this context, the users' feedback plays a major role. The purpose of this paper is to define a novel framework analysis for managing the feedback given by registered visitors of a web site.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper presents a new technique to integrate the feedback explicitly given by users into already existing user profiles. The authors introduce the novel concepts of scope, filtering, and relevance profiles for managing users' feedback. The new concept of Relevance Profile (RP) is defined.

Findings

Using the framework, the authors were able to discover patterns of usage of registered users of a web site.

Practical implications

The practical applicability of the approach is validated by a use case study showing how the framework can be used with a real web site. The authors used Gugubarra as a reference system, a prototype for creating and managing web user profiles, developed by the DBIS group at the Goethe‐University of Frankfurt.

Originality/value

A new way to integrate the user feedback into interest profiles and a novel framework to analyze and discover patterns of interests are presented. The paper is an extended version (more than 50 per cent novel material) of a previous paper presented at the iiWAS2010 conference.

Abstract

The importance of mobile services in our everyday life is growing while at the same time new interoperability issues arise due to hardware and software heterogeneity. Therefore, new architectural paradigms and models are needed to enhance software engineering methodologies with regard to platform independence and interoperability. This paper describes an UML pattern based approach for developing reconfigurable autonomous mobile services. Through the analysis of an mcommerce project, the relevance of our proposed architecture will be explained. Our focus lays on a generic reconfiguration mechanism based on profile matching from software modules. This profiling part will be further described and discussed. Finally, the applicability of our approach is investigated within a project about reconfigurable indoor navigation computers and a project about robot assisted sensor networks.

Abstract

Purpose

The main aim of this paper is to develop a CRIS systems search profile that would enable CRIS users to perform unified and semantically rich search for the records stored in the CRIS systems.

Design/methodology/approach

Prior to the search profile construction, diverse representative types of the scientific research data store systems (CRISs, digital libraries, institutional repositories, and search portals) were analyzed versus available search modes, indexes and query types.

Findings

The new SRU/W standard based search profile (CRIS profile) for the purpose of searching scientific research data was proposed, that supports search for all types of data identified through an exhaustive analysis covering all major scientific and research data store systems.

Research limitations/implications

Constraints of the proposed profile could appear from the fact that data identified in analyzed systems do not comprise all scientific research data recognized by CERIF standard which, in turn, could call for the profile extension.

Practical implications

Search profile has been verified on the data in the existing CRIS systems at the University of Novi Sad. The CRIS search profile enables unified and semantically rich search for the data stored in heterogeneous distributed scientific research data store systems.

Originality/value

The new SRU/W-based search profile extensively supports the search domain of scientific research data in CRIS systems. Commitments to SRU/W and CQL standards enable interoperability among heterogeneous, distributed scientific research data sources.

Abstract

The challenge of pervasive computing consists in offering access to computing services anywhere and anytime with any devices. However, before it becomes a reality, the problems of access control and authentication have to be solved, among others. Existing solutions are inadequate without adaptation to this specific environment. Among the promising approaches, the trust paradigm seems to be more flexible than others. We base this proposal on this paradigm to implement a distrust model, so‐called APC (Access Pass Certificate). The main objective of this model is to enable authorized user to roam and to access trusted sites though they are not known locally. A user can claim two kinds of APCs provided by two kinds of sites: the home site (where the user has an account) and the trusted site (that trusts the user). Using these certificates, the user can progressively extend her access scope. This model implements a decentralized mapping policy, where the correspondence between the user’s home profile and her rights in the trusted sites is determined by the trusted site. This distrust model and its implementation are presented in this article where we exhibit its importance for large but controlled access in pervasive environments.

Abstract

Despite several efforts during the last years, the web model and semantic web technologies have not yet been successfully applied to empower Ubiquitous Computing architectures in order to create knowledge‐rich environments populated by interconnected smart devices. In this paper we point out some problems of these previous initiatives and introduce SoaM (Smart Objects Awareness and Adaptation Model), an architecture for designing and seamlessly deploying web‐powered context‐aware semantic gadgets. Implementation and evaluation details of SoaM are also provided in order to identify future research challenges.

Abstract

Purpose

Metro wheels running on different lines can undergo wear at different positions. This paper aims to investigate the effects of wheel wear at two typical positions, i.e. wheel flange and tread, on the dynamic performance of metro vehicles and analyzes the differences, with an aim of providing theoretical support on wheel reprofiling for different metro lines.

Design/methodology/approach

Wheel profile data were measured on two actual metro lines, denoted A and B. It was observed that wheel wear on Lines A and B was concentrated on flanges and treads, respectively. A metro vehicle dynamics model was built using multibody dynamics software SIMPACK. Then it was applied to analyze the differences in effects of wheel wear at different positions on vehicle dynamic performance (VDP) for various speeds (50, 60 and 70 km/h) and line conditions (straight line, R1000m, R600m and R300m curves). Critical speed and vibration acceleration were used as indicators of VDP during linear motion (on straight track), while VDP during curvilinear motion (on curved track) was evaluated in terms of wheel/rail lateral force, wheel/rail vertical force, derailment coefficient and wheel unloading rate.

Findings

First, compared to wheel profile with tread wear, wheel profile with flange wear showed better performance during linear motion. When the distance traveled reached 8 × 104 and 14 × 104 km, the vehicle’s critical speed was 12.2 and 21.6% higher, respectively. The corresponding vertical and lateral vibration accelerations were 59.7 and 74.8% lower. Second, compared to wheel profile with flange wear, that with tread wear showed better performance during curvilinear motion, with smaller wheel/rail lateral force, derailment coefficient and wheel unloading rate. When the vehicle speed was 50, 60 and 70 km/h, the maximum difference in the three indicators between the two wheel profiles was 40.2, 44.7 and 23.1%, respectively. For R1000m, R600m and R300m curves, the corresponding maximum difference was 45.7, 69.0 and 44.4%, respectively.

Practical implications

The results of the study can provide a guidance and theoretical support on wheel reprofiling for different metro lines. On lines with large proportions of curved sections, metro vehicles are more prone to wheel flange wear and have poorer dynamic performance during curvilinear motion. Therefore, more attention should be paid to flange lubrication and maintenance for such lines. On lines with higher proportions of straight sections, metro vehicles are more prone to tread wear and have poorer performance on straight sections. So, tread maintenance and service requires more attention for such lines.

Originality/value

Existing research has focused primarily on the effects of wheel wear on VDP, but fails to consider the differences in the effects of wheel wear at different positions on VDP. In actual metro operation, the position of wheel wear can vary significantly between lines. Based on measured positions of wheel wear, this paper examines the differences in the effects of wheel wear at two typical positions, i.e. tread and flange, on VDP in detail.

Abstract

Purpose

This article provides insight into researchers' use of academic web profiles and an understanding of how the influencing factors highlighted in the literature interact with each other, affecting researchers' motivation to use web profiles.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on motivation theory and literature related to the use of online profile platforms and academic web profiles, the authors present a conceptual framework for motivation factors influencing researchers' use of academic web profiles. The authors use qualitative interviews with researchers to explore and enrich the conceptual framework.

Findings

The conceptual framework of researchers' motivation space shows the relationships and influences between internal and external motivation in connection to three main categories (Identity and professional goals, Organisation and guidelines, Platforms and technology) and 12 more specific aspects of motivation that all play a role in choices regarding academic online profiles and platforms. Personality also plays an important role in itself – and not always in support of professional goals or workplace guidelines.

Originality/value

The study shows that a holistic perspective is necessary to understand the high degree of complexity in terms of researchers' motivation to use academic online profiles, and the presented conceptual framework can be used to understand and activate motivation factors.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to design a new surface profile with simpler processing technology, which makes the bearing load carrying capacity (LCC) close to that of conventional tilting-pad thrust bearing.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper analyzes the LCC of the thrust pad with crown profile and designs a new profile, whose performance is similar to the crown profile. The laser method is introduced to fabricate the new profile. The profile with tiny crown height can be fabricated by the laser with the proper parameters.

Findings

It was found that there is an optimum value, which is best in terms of the capacity of tilting-pad thrust bearing reach. The new profile with proper parameters can replace the crown profile.

Originality/value

The new profile can replace the crown profile and is easier to be made. The new design method could be adopted for designing the pad surface profile of the tilting-pad thrust bearing.
