Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze, from a dynamic capabilities perspective, the role of big data analytics in supporting firms' innovation processes.

Design/methodology/approach

Relevant literature is reviewed and critically assessed. An interpretive methodology is used to analyze empirical data from interviews of big data analytics experts at firms within digitally related sectors.

Findings

This study shows how firms leverage big data to gain “richer” and “deeper” data at the inter-sections between the digital and physical worlds. The authors provide evidence for the importance of counterintuitive strategies aimed at developing innovative products, services or solutions with characteristics that may initially diverge, even significantly, from established customer/user needs.

Practical implications

The authors’ findings offer insights to help practitioners manage innovation processes in the physical world while taking investments in big data analytics into account.

Originality/value

The authors provide insights into the evolution of scholarly research on innovation directed toward opportunities to create a competitive advantage by offering new products, services or solutions diverging, even significantly, from established customer demand.

Abstract

Purpose

Despite the variety of supply chain management (SCM) research, little attention has been given to the use of Big Data Analytics for increased information exploitation in a supply chain. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to theory development in SCM by investigating the potential impacts of Big Data Analytics on information usage in a corporate and supply chain context. As it is imperative for companies in the supply chain to have access to up-to-date, accurate, and meaningful information, the exploratory research will provide insights into the opportunities and challenges emerging from the adoption of Big Data Analytics in SCM.

Design/methodology/approach

Although Big Data Analytics is gaining increasing attention in management, empirical research on the topic is still scarce. Due to the limited availability of comparable material at the intersection of Big Data Analytics and SCM, the authors apply the Delphi research technique.

Findings

Portraying the emerging transition trend from a digital business environment, the presented Delphi study findings contribute to extant knowledge by identifying 43 opportunities and challenges linked to the emergence of Big Data Analytics from a corporate and supply chain perspective.

Research limitations/implications

These constructs equip the research community with a first collection of aspects, which could provide the basis to tailor further research at the nexus of Big Data Analytics and SCM.

Originality/value

The research adds to the existing knowledge base as no empirical research has been presented so far specifically assessing opportunities and challenges on corporate and supply chain level with a special focus on the implications imposed through Big Data Analytics.

Abstract

Purpose

Accounting education is re-inventing itself as technology impacts the practical aspects of accounting in the real world and education tries to keep up. Big Data and data analytics have begun to influence elements of accounting including audit, accounting preparation, forensic accounting and general accountancy consulting. The purpose of this paper is to qualitatively analyse the current skills provision in accounting Masters courses linked to data analytics compared to academic and professional expectations of the same.

Design/methodology/approach

The academic expectations and requirements of the profession, related to the impact of Big Data and data analytics on accounting education were reviewed and compared to the current provisions of this accounting education in the form of Masters programmes. The research uses an exploratory, qualitative approach with thematic analysis.

Findings

Four themes were identified of the skills required for the effective use of Big Data and data analytics. These were: questioning and scepticism; critical thinking skills; understanding and ability to analyse and communicating results. Questioning and scepticism, as well as understanding and ability to analyse, were frequently cited explicitly as elements for assessment in various forms of accounting education in the Masters courses. However, critical thinking and communication skills were less explicitly cited in these accounting education programmes.

Research limitations/implications

The research reviewed and compared current academic literature and the requirements of the professional accounting bodies with Masters programmes in accounting and data analytics. The research identified key themes relevant to the accounting profession that should be explicitly developed and assessed within accounting education for Big Data and data analytics at both university and professional levels. Further analysis of the in-depth curricula, as opposed to the explicitly stated topic coverage, could add to this body of research.

Practical implications

This paper considers the potential combined role of professional qualification examinations and master’s degrees in skills provision for future practitioners in accounting and data analysis. This can be used to identify the areas in which accounting education can be further enhanced by focus or explicit mention of skills that are both developed and assessed within these programmes.

Social implications

The paper considers the interaction between academic and professional practice in the areas of accounting education, highlighting skills and areas for development for students currently considering accounting education and data analytics.

Originality/value

While current literature focusses on integrating data analysis into existing accounting and finance curricula, this paper considers the role of professional qualification examinations with Masters degrees as skills provision for future practitioners in accounting and data analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates the impact of big data analytics capabilities on green supply chain performance. Moreover, it assesses the mediating effect of the green innovation and moderating effect of technological intensity.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is based on primary data that were collected from the food and beverages manufacturing sector operating in Jordan. A total of 420 samples were used for the final data analysis. Data analysis was performed via structural equation modeling (SEM) using SmartPLS 3.3.9.

Findings

The results of the data analysis supported a positive relationship between big data analytics capabilities and the green supply chain performance as well as a mediating effect of green innovation. It was confirmed that technological intensity moderated the relationship of green innovation on green supply chain performance.

Research limitations/implications

The study faced many limitations such as the method of collecting primary data, which relied on a questionnaire only and the use of cross-sectional data, as well as studying one context and in one country.

Practical implications

The findings can guide managers and policymakers in the Jordanian food and beverage manufacturing sector on how to manage organizational capabilities related to big data analytics to enhance green supply chain performance and improve green innovation in these firms.

Originality/value

This study developed a theoretical and empirical model to investigate the relationship between big data analytics capabilities, green innovation, technological intensity and green supply chain performance. This study offers new theoretical and managerial contributions that add value to the supply chain management and innovation literature by testing the moderated mediation model of these constructs in the food and beverages manufacturing sector in Jordan.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to scrutinize and classify the literature linking Big Data analytics and management phenomena.

Design/methodology/approach

An objective bibliometric analysis is conducted, supported by subjective assessments based on the studies focused on the intertwining of Big Data analytics and management fields. Specifically, deeper descriptive statistics and document co-citation analysis are provided.

Findings

From the document co-citation analysis and its evaluation, four clusters depicting literature linking Big Data analytics and management phenomena are revealed: theoretical development of Big Data analytics; management transition to Big Data analytics; Big Data analytics and firm resources, capabilities and performance; and Big Data analytics for supply chain management.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the first attempts to comprehend the research streams which, over time, have paved the way to the intersection between Big Data analytics and management fields.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of Big Data analytics, data security and service supply chain innovation capabilities on services supply chain performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper draws on the relational view of resource-based theory to propose a theoretical model. The data were collected through survey of 145 service firms.

Findings

The results of this study found that the Big Data analytics has a positive and significant relationship with a firm’s ability to manage data security and a positive impact on service supply chain innovation capabilities and service supply chain performance. This study also found that most service firms participating in this study used Big Data analytics to execute existing algorithms faster with larger data sets.

Practical implications

A main recommendation of this study is that service firms empower a chief data officer to establish the data needed and design the governance of data in the company to eliminate any security issues. Data security was a concern if a firm did not have ample data governance and protection as the information was shared among members of service supply chain networks.

Originality/value

Big Data analytics are a useful technology tool to forecast market preference based on open source, structured and unstructured data.

Abstract

Purpose

The importance of integrating cloud-based big data analytics software with enterprise resource planning (ERP) platforms is not clearly understood. Specifically, this study aims to look into firms that implemented SAP during the boom of ERP implementations. Further, this study aims to look into the type of cloud-based big data analytics software that those firms installed when cloud-based packages started to be available.

Design/methodology/approach

This study specifically looks at productivity and the sources of productivity, such as technical progress and efficiency change, using a non-parametric approach that does not constrain the analysis to any production function.

Findings

This study found that by the time cloud-based big data analytics software started to be available, SAP-adopters already had a competitive advantage over the non-SAP adopters manifested through productivity and specifically through technology and not efficiency. Later, when the same firms decided to integrate their ERP platforms with cloud-based big data analytics software, the firms that had installed SAP already had an initial advantage over the non-SAP-adopters.

Research limitations/implications

In support of the theory of technology organization environment (Tornatzky and Fleisher, 1990) and Posner's theoretical framework (Posner, 1961), a cloud-based big data analytics software will not change the relative position that firms have in the industry, so a cloud-based big data analytics software by itself will not provide a competitive advantage over competitors. Still, it will ensure that the preliminary technological gap that SAP-adopters already had is not magnified.

Practical implications

Knowing the sources of productivity improvement and technological improvements will give managers greater leverage when negotiating budgets, negotiating long-term contracts in better terms and in the decision process.

Originality/value

This study fills a research gap by looking into the implementation of a cloud-based big data analytics software with ERP.

Abstract

Purpose

With the advent of the internet and communication technology, the penetration of e-learning has increased. The digital data being created by the educational and research institutions is also on the ascent. The growing interest in recent years toward big data, educational data mining and learning analytics has motivated the development of new analytical ways and approaches and advancements in learning settings. The need for using big data to handle, analyze this large amount of data is prime. This trend has started attracting the interest of educational institutions which have an important role in the development skills process and the preparation of a new generation of learners. “A real revolution for education,” it is based on this kind of terms that many articles have paid attention to big data for learning. How can analytics techniques and tools be so efficient and become a great prospect for the learning process? Big data analytics, when applied into teaching and learning processes, might help to improvise as well as to develop new paradigms. In this perspective, this paper aims to investigate the most promising applications and issues of big data for the design of the next-generation of massive e-learning. Specifically, it addresses the analytical tools and approaches for enhancing the future of e-learning, pitfalls arising from the usage of large data sets. Globally, this paper focuses on the possible application of big data techniques on learning developments, to show the power of analytics and why integrating big data is so important for the learning context.

Design/methodology/approach

Big data has in the recent years been an area of interest among innovative sectors and has become a major priority for many industries, and learning sector cannot escape to this deluge. This paper focuses on the different methods of big data able to be used in learning context to understand the benefits it can bring both to teaching and learning process, and identify its possible impact on the future of this sector in general. This paper investigates the connection between big data and the learning context. This connection can be illustrated by identifying the several main analytics approaches, methods and tools for improving the learning process. This can be clearer by the examination of the different ways and solutions that contribute to making a learning process more agile and dynamic. The methods that were used in this research are mainly of a descriptive and analytical nature, to establish how big data and analytics methods develop the learning process, and understand their contributions and impacts in addressing learning issues. To this end, authors have collected and reviewed existing literature related to big data in education and the technology application in the learning context. Authors then have done the same process with dynamic and operational examples of big data for learning. In this context, the authors noticed that there are jigsaw bits that contained important knowledge on the different parts of the research area. The process concludes by outlining the role and benefit of the related actors and highlighting the several directions relating to the development and implementation of an efficient learning process based on big data analytics.

Findings

Big data analytics, its techniques, tools and algorithms are important to improve the learning context. The findings in this paper suggest that the incorporation of an approach based on big data is of crucial importance. This approach can improve the learning process, for this, its implementation must be correctly aligned with educational strategies and learning needs.

Research limitations/implications

This research represents a reference to better understanding the influence and the role of big data in educational dynamic. In addition, it leads to improve existing literature about big data for learning. The limitations of the paper are given by its nature derived from a theoretical perspective, and the discussed ideas can be empirically validated by identifying how big data helps in addressing learning issues.

Originality/value

Over the time, the process that leads to the acquisition of the knowledge uses and receives more technological tools and components; this approach has contributed to the development of information communication and the interactive learning context. Technology applications continue to expand the boundaries of education into an “anytime/anywhere” experience. This technology and its wide use in the learning system produce a vast amount of different kinds of data. These data are still rarely exploited by educational practitioners. Its successful exploitation conducts educational actors to achieve their full potential in a complex and uncertain environment. The general motivation for this research is assisting higher educational institutions to better understand the impact of the big data as a success factor to develop their learning process and achieve their educational strategy and goals. This study contributes to better understand how big data analytics solutions are turned into operational actions and will be particularly valuable to improve learning in educational institutions.

Purpose

Financial firms are looking for better ways to harness the power of data analytics to improve their decision quality in the financial modeling era. This study aims to explore key factors influencing big data analytics-driven financial decision quality which has been given scant attention in the relevant literature.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors empirically examined the interrelations between five factors including technology capability, data capability, information quality, data-driven insights and financial decision quality drawing on quantitative data collected from Jordanian financial firms using a cross-sectional questionnaire survey.

Findings

The SmartPLS analysis outcomes revealed that both technology capability and data capability have a positive and direct influence on information quality and data-driven insights without any direct influence on financial decision quality. The findings also point to the importance and influence of information quality and data-driven insights on high-quality financial decisions.

Originality/value

The study for the first time enriches the knowledge and relevant literature by exploring the critical factors affecting big data-driven financial decision quality in the financial modeling context.

The healthcare sector in India is witnessing phenomenal growth, such that by the year 2022, it will be a market worth trillions of INR. Increase in income levels, awareness regarding personal health, the occurrence of lifestyle diseases, better insurance policies, low-cost healthcare services, and the emergence of newer technologies like telemedicine are driving this sector to new heights. Abundant quantities of healthcare data are being accumulated each day, which is difficult to analyze using traditional statistical and analytical tools, calling for the application of Big Data Analytics in the healthcare sector. Through provision of evidence-based decision-making and actions across healthcare networks, Big Data Analytics equips the sector with the ability to analyze a wide variety of data. Big Data Analytics includes both predictive and descriptive analytics. At present, about half of the healthcare organizations have adopted an analytical approach to decision-making, while a quarter of these firms are experienced in its application. This implies the lack of understanding prevalent in healthcare sector toward the value and the managerial, economic, and strategic impact of Big Data Analytics. In this context, this chapter on “Predictive Analytics in Healthcare” discusses sources, areas of application, possible future areas, advantages and limitations of the application of predictive Big Data Analytics in healthcare.
