Abstract

Purpose

Although many studies have sought to address the topic of continuance intention among Fintech customers, the reported findings are fragmented. Therefore, the present study proposes a research model that integrates the main constructs involved in Fintech continuance intention.

Design/methodology/approach

The current study uses a meta-analytic-based correlation analysis of effect sizes, meta-regression analysis and meta-analytic structural equation modeling, with 247 effect sizes in 69 studies involving 26,140 respondents.

Findings

The results reveal continuance intention is driven by satisfaction and trust, with ease of use and usefulness being antecedents of satisfaction and trust. The authors also found evidence to show satisfaction partially mediates the relationship between ease of use and continuance intention and that trust fully mediates the relationship between ease of use and continuance intention and partially mediates the relationship between usefulness and continuance intention. In addition, the authors found that in Western countries, with higher Human Development Index levels and greater of use of electronic payment, satisfaction has more impact on continuance intention.

Practical implications

From a theoretical standpoint, this meta-analytic study has implications for the literature on Fintech by offering an empirical generalization on the strength of the antecedents of Fintech continuance intentions and by testing possible moderators in a wide range of countries and studies. In other words, this study’s goal is to broaden the scope of the research. Regarding managerial implications, it is important to listen to user opinions regarding the positive and negative points of their experience with these technologies and take them into consideration when planning improvements. Additionally, the analysis shows the importance of using data from user interaction with technology, obtained, for example, through big data analytics, whereby companies can see how users behave, how much time they spend accessing certain functions and which technological features they use most, and thus seek to improve whatever is needed.

Originality/value

This meta-analytic study advances the understanding of Fintech continuance intentions. Using the proposed approach, it is possible to generate accurate estimates of the effect size of each analyzed antecedent as the meta-analytic method jointly evaluates the results produced by a wide variety of studies performed in different contexts, allowing more accurate conclusions to be drawn.

Abstract

Purpose

Considering the cognitive challenges associated with a data-rich business environment, this research aims to investigate the relationship between data literacy (DL), perceived data overload (PDO), and technostress (TS), besides the effect of these constructs on professional's individual performance (IP).

Design/methodology/approach

Through survey research, the authors collected data from 321 professionals who work in data-rich and highly technological business environments. To test the hypotheses proposed, the authors developed the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) procedures.

Findings

The results showed that DL is positively associated with IP and negatively with PDO. PDO is positively associated with TS and negatively with IP. The authors found no significant negative association between TS and IP.

Research limitations/implications

With this research, the authors seek to contribute to the gap in the literature concerning two cognitive challenges associated with data-rich business environments: PDO and TS, analyzing from the point of view of the individual, and highlighting the importance of DL in this context.

Practical implications

The results can assist managers in effectively being concerned with the DL level of their workforce. This is important considering not only the professionals' IP but also the cognitive challenges such as PDO and TS.

Originality/value

The innovation of this study lies in the empirical analysis of DL in the business context and its relationship with two cognitive challenges inherent in data-rich environments: PDO, and TS. Besides, the authors highlight the importance of understanding such phenomena in terms of IP.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to develop models and analyse the influence of supply chain governance (SCG) and its conceptions (contractual, relational and transactional) on supply chain performance (SCP).

Design/methodology/approach

Multiple case studies and survey methods were used. Data collection in the multiple case studies was performed by in-depth interviews with supply chain executives from top strategic levels in six companies. The research instrument was applied to 185 executives from large companies that possessed a broad, complex supply chain in Brazil.

Findings

It was identified that SCG, comprising contractual, relational and transactional aspects, has a positive influence on operational and financial SCP. SCG was found to be a more comprehensive view of the supply chain that focuses on more strategic aspects and long-term inter-organizational relationships. SCG affects SCP, primarily in the operational aspects with regard to global costs and in the financial aspects of investment return.

Originality/value

SCG is a topic that has been widely studied in recent years for analysing inter-organizational relations as a multi-dimensional phenomenon embedded in the company’s structures and processes. Studies analysing all aspects of SCG at the same time, however, have not been found. Moreover, there are a number of performance indicators, but there is a lack of consensus on what determines the performance of these supply chains. Furthermore, few studies have attempted to understand the effects of SCG on supply chain performance.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the innovation performance of food companies from Brazil with regards to four innovation capabilities.

Design/methodology/approach

A research study was carried out on a sample of 120 Brazilian food companies. A conceptual framework of innovation capability was adopted to estimate the relationship between development capability, operations capability, management capability, transaction capability and the innovation performance of food companies. The empirical test was made with partial least squares analysis.

Findings

Results revealed that development capability and transaction capability have a substantive impact on the innovative performance of firms, while the findings indicated neither operations capability nor management capability was significantly related to the innovation performance of firms.

Practical implications

If innovations are considered one of the major sources of profitability for the firm, the findings of this study indicate ways to improve food companies in this issue. According to the results, efforts directed to technology development capability and transaction capability can significantly impact for the innovation performance.

Originality/value

Considering the overall manufacturing industry from Brazil, the food industry represents the biggest in economic and social impact for the nation. This quantitative empirical study fills an important gap in research by discussing innovation in an industry with a strategic role in the development of the country and to attend the global demand by food.

Abstract

Purpose

In the age of analytical competition, business models and gaining competitive advantage (CA) are directly related to organizations’ data strategy. Incorporating data strategy enables the organization to unlock the potential value of big data analytics. Therefore, this study aims to analyze how data strategy affects the achievement of CA.

Design/methodology/approach

Through survey research, data were collected from 103 respondents. Model testing and evaluation, partial least squares structural equation modeling and analysis of mediating effects were performed.

Findings

The supported hypotheses confirm the direct effects between the defensive and offensive positioning of the data strategy on CA, as well as the mediating effect of the offensive data strategy (ODS).

Originality/value

This study is groundbreaking in terms of empirically analyzing how defensive data strategy (DDS) or ODS affects CA. In conclusion, to extract value from their data, organizations need to establish their data strategy based on their strategic positioning, the potential of their resources and their analytical capabilities.

Research implications

The defensive and offensive positioning of the data strategy are closely related to each other and both, in isolation, directly and positively, impact CA. It is also noted that the role of defensive positioning is to strengthen the offensive positioning of the data strategy, which in turn, plays a central role in achieving CA.

Practical implications

The results can assist managers in effectively incorporating analytical resources and capabilities, as well as helping them understand the dynamics and advantages of data strategy, so they can drive strategic objectives according to the organization’s positioning.

Originality/value

This study is groundbreaking in terms of empirically analyzing how DDS or ODS affects CA. In conclusion, to extract value from their data, organizations need to establish their data strategy based on their strategic positioning, the potential of their resources and their analytical capabilities.

Abstract

Purpose

In the digital age, the use of data and analytical capabilities to guide business decisions and operations plays a strategic role for organizations to gain competitive advantage (CA). However, the paths by which analytical capabilities convey their effect to CA are not yet fully known and few studies address the role of behavioral and cultural aspects of related of analytical capabilities. The purpose of this paper is to analyze how data-driven culture (DDC) and business analytics (BA) affect CA, considering the mediating effects of big data visualization (BDV) and organizational agility (OA).

Design/methodology/approach

A survey was conducted with 173 managers who are BDV and BA users in Brazilian organizations of various economic segments. The data were analyzed through structural equation modeling and mediation tests.

Findings

The evidence indicates that DDC and BDV are antecedents of BA. The following complementary mediations were discovered: BDV in the relationship between DDC and BA; BA in the relationship between DDC and CA; and OA in the relationship between BA and CA. It was also discovered that OA explains the transmission of most of the effect of BA to CA.

Practical implications

This study can help organizations to understand the importance of cultural and behavioral aspects related to the use of the analytical capabilities. Thereby, managers can establish policies and strategies to extract value from data and leverage business agility and competitiveness through use BDV and BA.

Originality/value

This study fills an important research gap by developing an original research model and discussing empirical evidence on how DDC and BA affect CA, considering the mediating effects of BDV and OA.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate how the literature has been addressing the relationships between corporate fraud and executive behavior and corporate fraud and information technology (IT) controls.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review was performed following the planning phases proposed by Levy and Ellis (2006), illuminated by the research onion, developed by Saunders et al. (2007).

Findings

The main findings of the studies analyzed refer basically to models to assess the risk of fraud. These risks originate from the market, from the organization itself or from individuals and also from their relationship networks. Subsequently, the main risks identified by the authors were classified according to their origin, the main theories approached and the “solutions” for the risks presented by the authors as the product of their work.

Research limitations/implications

It should be noted that this study is not free of limitations, of which two stand out: the full body of articles on the subject was certainly not evaluated. Although the search has been systematic and judicious both by the combination of keywords for the searches, as well as by the use of the main databases and also by the rigor in the description of the procedures and the analysis of the articles in the light of Research Onion was based on the authors’ knowledge that may have been limited in some respect.

Practical implications

As a practical implication, there is the relationship of red flags and their classification by origin, as they can be very useful for planning the work of internal and external auditors.

Social implications

It is considered that this work can be a starting point for scholars who are interested in the corporate fraud phenomenon, given that the data was collected and organized systematically.

Originality/value

The analysis of the articles in relation to Research Onion shed light on the main philosophical and methodological characteristics of the studies. Also, regarding the relationships between corporate fraud and IT controls, existing scientific research appears to be limited. Searches for the terms information technology and information systems were extended, as well as search strings tested with the terms data governance and IT governance without results. This fact demonstrates that there may be (as far as the results have reached) a vast area of research on corporate fraud in the field of systems knowledge and information technology.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide an analysis of the studies about workaround behavior in the Information Systems (IS) area, addressing its positive and negative aspects and raising the key related issues.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review was conducted to verify how workaround behavior has been approached in IS studies. A qualitative method was adopted and implemented in two stages: selection of articles from the time period 2007-2017 in the databases Web of Science, ScienceDirect and Scopus and analysis of the selected articles.

Findings

The results showed that many studies have been concerned with identifying the principal reasons for the manifestation of workaround behavior and the measures taken to reduce its impacts. Many studies from international journals examined the implementation of an ERP along with the workaround behavior. The need to expand the national studies on workaround behavior is emphasized, because the majority of the identified studies are international.

Research limitations/implications

The key limitation is related to the period of analysis, because only articles published since 2007 were selected.

Practical implications

This paper contributes to both theory and practice, bringing relevant concepts about workaround behavior, and corroborating the importance of the studies on workaround in the IS area. The literature review of the 20 articles analyzed reveals the main features in each article, such as theoretical and methodological aspects that support the research. Based on this analysis, a conceptual map was developed presenting the most relevant points about workaround behavior, where the causes, the negative and positive consequences, the types of solutions and the organizational and individual impacts are presented.

Originality/value

Research into workaround behavior has increased in recent years, however very few studies have been conducted in Brazil. To the best of the authors' knowledge, no articles regarding Brazil and this subject were published between 2007 and 2017. Thus, this paper seeks to redress this imbalance.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to identify the benefits of data science (DS) for organizations, highlighting the challenges and opportunities related to developing this capability.

Design/methodology/approach

Initially, a literature review was performed. Later, empirical data were collected through a structured electronic interview answered by 211 informants, who are most experienced managers of medium and large organizations from different economic sectors, and data were submitted to content analysis.

Findings

The most frequently observed benefits are as follows: support for data analysis and insight generation with agility; creation of a data-driven culture; improvement of data quality; facilitating the understanding of the business environment, opportunity sensing; and organizational performance management. The most observed challenges are as follows: data-driven culture; DS training; allocation of investments in analytical technologies; and data governance and strategy.

Research limitations/implications

In addition, to mapping the state of the art on the subject, it contributes to the expansion of scientific knowledge through the identification and disclosure of 11 benefit indicators and 16 challenge indicators associated with analytical capabilities.

Practical implications

To transform data into information and add value to the business, organizations need to make efforts to enable executive mindset change, the formulation of strategies and governance mechanisms gave the renewal of workforce competencies and the allocation of investments in information technology.

Originality/value

A vast body of empirical evidence is gathered that consolidates different views on the benefits and challenges associated with DS for business.

Abstract

Purpose

The creation of offshore units allows companies to invest in countries that offer tax incentives, and provides global presence. Nevertheless, knowledge sharing in global teams may be challenger. The aim of this paper is to analyze the barriers of knowledge sharing in global teams.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a qualitative research based on interviews in two firms.

Findings

The interviewees confirmed the relevance of the barriers to knowledge sharing identified in the literature. The interviewees also cited other four barriers: technology, professional skills, cost and methodology of software development. Other results were: the relationship between the barriers, for example, cultural differences are negatively related to absorptive capacity; and, the barriers could also be enablers for knowledge sharing.

Research limitations/implications

The limitations identified were: the use the interview as the only form of data collection, since the firms did not authorize the collection of documents; the interviews were conducted in two ways, in person for those residing in the same city as the researchers and via Skype® for those who were in another city; the findings are based on two case studies of two different firms and are not generalizable.

Originality/value

This research offers a new perspective and a better understanding of the interaction and relationships among knowledge sharing barriers. The results of this research may be useful for academics and organizations because they deepen the discussion on knowledge sharing in global teams, and also show the reality of two organizations in the technology sector in relation to this subject.
