Abstract

Purpose

In India, the COVID-19 outbreak has been declared an epidemic in all its states and union territories. To combat COVID-19, lockdown was imposed on March 25, 2020 which has adversely affected the education system in the country. It has changed the traditional education system to the educational technologies (EdTechs) model, where teaching and assessments are conducted online. This paper aims to identify the barriers faced by teachers during online teaching and assessment in different home environment settings in India.

Design/methodology/approach

Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) of qualitative research methodology has been used in this research. The study was conducted among the teachers working in the government and private universities of Uttarakhand, India. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted among 19 teachers to collect data regarding the barriers faced by them during online teaching and assessment. ATLAS.ti, version 8 was used to analyze the interview data.

Findings

The findings revealed four categories of barriers that are faced by teachers during online teaching and assessments. Under home environment settings, a lack of basic facilities, external distraction and family interruption during teaching and conducting assessments were major issues reported. Institutional support barriers such as the budget for purchasing advanced technologies, a lack of training, a lack of technical support and a lack of clarity and direction were also reported. Teachers also faced technical difficulties. The difficulties were grouped under a lack of technical support, it included a lack of technical infrastructure, limited awareness of online teaching platforms and security concerns. Teachers’ personal problems including a lack of technical knowledge, negative attitude, course integration with technology and a lack of motivation are identified as the fourth category to damper their engagement in online teaching and assessments.

Practical implications

The findings of the study can be helpful to the regulatory authorities and employers of higher education institutions who are planning to adopt online teaching as a regular activity in the future. The insights gained from the findings can help them to revisit their existing policy frameworks by designing new strategies and technical structures to assist their teachers in successfully embracing the EdTech to deal with any crisis in the future.

Originality/value

Many authors have conducted research to address the problems faced by students related to online teaching and learning during COVID-19 in India. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that addresses the challenges faced by teachers during the online teaching and assessment in the home environment settings by using qualitative analysis (IPA) techniques. The current study replenishes the gap by contributing to the literature of online teaching and assessment under the home environment settings during the pandemic situation.

Purpose

Human Resources Management (HRM) plays a crucial role in fostering sustainability and operational efficiency in Indian manufacturing firms. This study examines the impact of recruitment, training, and performance appraisal on the adoption of digital circular economy models, identifying gaps in current HRM practices and their impact on firm performance.

Design/methodology/approach

HRM practices significantly impact the adoption of a digital circular economy in Indian manufacturing firms, according to a study involving 256 employees across 17 firms, using structural equation modeling to test hypotheses and provide insights.

Findings

HRM practices in Indian manufacturing firms significantly contribute to the adoption of the digital circular economy, but the influence of compensation, rewards, and employee engagement on circular economy adoption needs to be better aligned with sustainability goals.

Research limitations/implications

The research has limitations in terms of limited sample size and focus on specific HRM practices, which may not fully represent the diverse landscape of Indian manufacturing firms and omit factors such as organizational culture and external environment.

Originality/value

HRM practices are significantly impacting the Indian economy, with a focus on enhancing sustainability and operational efficiency in manufacturing firms.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide a systematic literature review on blockchain technology in education to offer a detailed understanding of the present scenario in terms of benefits, barriers, present blockchain technology application and future areas where blockchain technology can be implemented in the other fields of education.

Design/methodology/approach

A bibliometric analysis is conducted on for data in the publications, journals, authors and citations were collected, and examined by applying bibliometric measures. The data was collected from SCOPUS database on the topic “Blockchain Technology in Education”. The following research questions guided this systematic literature review (SLR: How blockchain technology has been defined in educational settings? How were the technology examined (i.e. the methodology)? What were the results of using this technology in an education system?

Findings

The study identifies the benefits, barriers and present application of blockchain technology in education. The analysis shows that blockchain technology in education is still a young discipline, but has a lot of potential to benefits the educational sector at large.

Practical implications

This research provides a groundwork for education institutions, the policymakers and researchers to explore other areas where blockchain technology can be implemented, though this research has also suggested some prospective uses of blockchain technology in different functions of an education system, more application can be brought into the education system to exploit the potential of blockchain technology.

Originality/value

The paper discusses the application of blockchain technology in education with the help of bibliometric analysis. This is one of the first known studies to review the blockchain technology by identifying its benefits, barriers, present blockchain technology application. Based on the analysis, future application areas are also identified.

Purpose

Economists and governments worldwide are largely concerned about sustainability, CO2 footprint and climate change, which are mostly caused by fossil fuel emissions. This study aims to provide an in-depth analysis of the significant role played by renewable energy (RE) sources in generating clean energy for achieving sustainable net-zero standards and mitigating climate change.

Methodology

A thorough review of literature was conducted on the topic to provide insights into the existing state about the adoption of RE sources to achieve the net-zero goals.

Findings

As a result of the extensive review, it is found that all forms of RE, such as hydropower, solar energy, wind energy, bioenergy and geothermal power, are currently being used in many countries. Also, application of these sources across various sectors and their environmental consequences also vary for each RE source.

Implications

This chapter emphasises that adoption of RE sources is crucial to reduce the usage of limited fossil-based natural resources, which have significant negative effects on the environment. The adoption of RE at large scale requires the implementation of new regulations and policies along with technological progress for enhancing the affordability and effectiveness of these sources.

Originality

This chapter provides compelling evidence to support the acceleration of the transition from a vulnerable fossil fuel–dependent economy to a sustainable low-carbon one, with RE sources playing a central role.

Purpose

This study explores the intersection of climate change social responsibility and electronic financial inclusion (EFI) as critical components of sustainable development. The research aims to identify the synergies between these domains and their potential to drive inclusive growth and resilience.

Design/Methodology/Approach

The study integrates literature review and case studies to analyse the role of EFI in enhancing access to financial services, particularly for marginalised communities. It also examines corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives aimed at mitigating climate change and promoting environmental sustainability. The research study highlights successful integration models and best practices that demonstrate the impact of multi-stakeholder collaboration.

Findings

The findings reveal that EFI significantly contributes to poverty reduction and economic empowerment by expanding financial access in underserved regions. Moreover, corporate initiatives in climate change mitigation, when aligned with social responsibility, enhance business resilience and foster sustainable practices. The study emphasises the importance of supportive policy frameworks and technological innovations in scaling these efforts.

Research Limitations/Implications

The study's focus on case studies may limit the generalisability of the findings. Future research could explore broader geographic regions and diverse economic contexts.

Originality/Value

The main purpose of this chapter is dual fold: first, to offer an exhaustive examination of migration trends and factors influencing migrants' decisions to relocate. Second, to propose actionable suggestions aimed at minimising the harmful impacts of climate-induced migration originating from the Indian subcontinent.

Study Design/Methodology/Approach

This chapter adopts an intensive literature review and integrated approach emphasising safety and partaking rights to examine climate prejudices across various dimensions including age, vulnerability, background, gender, geographical location, pay levels, migrant/refugee/internally displaced status and their connections.

Findings

An in-depth assessment of evidence surfaced on environmental migrants reveal a complex interplay of social, environmental and personal dynamics collectively shaping migration patterns beyond purely economic considerations. Natural disasters and associated mental shocks, social tensions and safety concerns, livelihood diversification, educational and development opportunities in host region, family pressures, extent of possession of assets and potential health and well-being all pose as vital drivers in environmental migration.

Originality/Value

A novel attempt is made to address the interconnected nature of climate change with other crises, exacerbating existing inequalities whilst emphasising the importance of incorporating diverse interdisciplinary and international perspectives, prioritising the voices of the victimised to effectively address the climate emergency.

Research Implications

Policy recommendations encompass enhancing central and local government support by establishing migrant supportive legal frameworks, expanding livelihood diversification programs and factoring in migrant returnee programmes.

Purpose

The circular economy (CE) has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its potential in combining the economic growth positively with businesses, society and the environment simultaneously. The purpose of this review is to provide a concise summary of the existing literature regarding how CE strategies can help mitigate climate change.

Methodology

A comprehensive review of extant literature is undertaken on the topic of CE and climate change. Six sectors are explored in this chapter; although these sectors are different, but still, they are interdependent and are not completely separate.

Findings

Thorough study of literature reveals that the energy, transport and manufacturing sectors have the greatest potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while the waste and building sector have a moderate potential for savings. The agriculture sector, on the other hand, is predicted to have the lowest potential for savings.

Implications

This chapter provides implications for achieving a sustainable future in terms of economic growth, social harmony and environment conditions by developing efficient and affordable methods to achieve the goal of CE.

Originality

This chapter is a unique endeavour to explore the intricate relationship between CE and climate change. Although both concepts have been explored individually by various studies, but our study is one of the few attempts made to emphasise the crucial role of CE to mitigate the climate change.
