Abstract

Purpose

The growing number of Muslim consumers pursuing a lifestyle of health and sustainability (LOHAS) under the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic is interesting to assess; however, existing research focusing on this topic remains scarce. This study aims to address the research gaps and add to the body of knowledge from previous literature related to Islamic religiosity, environmental knowledge, LOHAS and Muslim customer well-being.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample used in this study is Muslim customers, including university students in a medical department and medical workers in Indonesia, using proportional random sampling methods with a total sample of 308 respondents.

Findings

The results demonstrate that Islamic religiosity positively and significantly impacts environmental knowledge, LOHAS and Muslim customer well-being. Similarly, environmental knowledge positively and significantly influences LOHAS, and subsequently, LOHAS fruitfully impacts Muslim customer well-being.

Practical implications

The results can assist managers of eco-friendly and healthy products or services and public policymakers in their effort to enhance LOHAS, particularly for Indonesian Muslim consumers to accomplish well-being considering their Islamic religiosity.

Social implications

The results of this study help society protect a sustainable environment by increasing their environmental knowledge and LOHAS. Based on Islamic religion, society recognize how important environmental issues are to keep the environment safe in the future and build the culture of LOHAS to achieve their well-being.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the body of marketing literature for Muslim green consumer behaviour in particular and the LOHAS of the Muslim customer segment based on Islamic religiosity.

Abstract

Purpose

Thailand's Halal-friendly destination attributes are the focus of this study. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of Halal-friendly attributes on tourists’ intentions to visit non-Muslim destinations. Also, this study analyzes the impact of Muslim tourists’ attitudes on Halal-friendly characteristics and their intentions to visit countries that are not predominantly Muslim.

Design/methodology/approach

To accomplish objectives, a survey was used to gather the data by using a convenient non-probability sampling approach from Muslim-majority countries Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. A proposed structural equation model was used to assess the influence of the variables above on the outcomes.

Findings

This study found that the factors of Halal-friendly facilities and Halal-friendly service positively influence the visiting intentions of Indonesian, Malaysian and Brunei Muslim tourists. In contrast, the social environment, food/beverages and local and staff attributes do not influence visit intentions. The tourist attitude mediates the relationship between the intention to visit and three dimensions of Halal-friendly attributes (social environment; food/beverage; and locals and staff).

Research limitations/implications

This study did not investigate different kinds of dimensions for Muslim tourists visiting Thailand, such as preferences regarding personnel and families, cultural and artistic characteristics and the attributes of events and festivals. These dimensions cover a wide range of Halal-friendly tourism aspects. Second, this research did not investigate the associations between the demographics of Muslim tourists (age, gender, education level and income level) and the model variables. Such an investigation could have helped business developers and marketers in Thailand develop an efficient strategy for target marketing. The results of this research provide fundamental guidance and information for tourist enterprises in non-Muslim nations on how to enhance Muslim travellers’ images and intentions. However, because of the influence of other variables, locations in various areas of Asia, Africa and Europe may exhibit somewhat different effective qualities (e.g. environment, culture, history, etc.).

Practical implications

This study sheds light on the factors contributing to visitor satisfaction in the context of a desire to go to a Halal-friendly site. This insight from this study can be adapted and applied by tourism managers and marketing executives to build or develop the Halal-friendly destination image of a tourist destination (Phuket) in the right dimensions. It is a possibility that the image of a tourist attraction has a tight relationship with travelers’ perceived value, contentment and loyalty (Hsu et al., 2008; Khunrattanaporn, 2013; Pike, 2008). Battour et al. (2022) found that Muslims’ behavioural intentions are affected by the Halal attributes of the destination. It indicates that Halal attributes are very important for Muslim tourists when selecting a destination. To attract Muslim tourists, this study can be used for strategies and planning.

Originality/value

This study sheds fresh light on the concept of Halal tourism. It examines the perspective of Muslim tourists using Halal goods or services in anticipation of a future trip to a non-Muslim location (Phuket). This study is crucial for destination tourism operators, managers and marketers who lead Muslim tourists to non-Muslim destinations.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to scrutinize the halal trust model by integrating the quality and valence theory in the mobile food purchasing service during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Design/methodology/approach

This research uses data from 368 Muslim customers collected via an online survey from Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. This study uses partial least square modelling to appraise the formation of halal trust, including halal food quality, mobile apps quality, perceived benefit and health risk as drivers and loyalty as the consequence.

Findings

The data analysis notes that the combination of perceived quality and valence theory provides a comprehensive understanding of halal trust in mobile halal food purchasing during COVID-19. This study also verifies the crucial role of halal food quality and mobile apps quality in gaining halal trust.

Research limitations/implications

This study used data from Muslim customers of the greater Bandung, Indonesia. The data limited the generalization of this study's findings. Moreover, this study predicted halal trust by integrating perceived benefit, perceived trust and quality as the predictors, whereas other determinants such as commitment and reputation were not included. Therefore, future researchers can incorporate these issues in their future halal trust research.

Practical implications

To gain Muslim trust, this study recommends managers whose halal food is sold via mobile apps ensure that their halal food has a quality standard, made of, and processed according to Islamic values. Next, having a high-quality mobile app is also a must.

Originality/value

This study is early research that examines the integration of the quality and valence theory to evaluate halal trust in mobile halal food purchasing during COVID-19.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to analyse the influence of perceived value (PV), sensation seeking (SS) and low crowding (LC) on the satisfaction and behavioural intention (BI) of Indian pilgrim tourists to Kartarpur Corridor, Pakistan. In addition, it identifies the mediation effect of satisfaction in the structural relationship between PV, SS and LC as exogenous variables and BI as an endogenous variable.

Design/methodology/approach

By using convenience sampling, out of 510 questionnaires distributed among the Indian pilgrim tourists returning from Kartarpur Sahib, Pakistan, a total of 404 completely filled surveys were used to evaluate the robustness of the theoretical framework. Data analysis and empirical testing of the suggested model are conducted using descriptive statistics, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling.

Findings

The results reveal that PV, SS and LC positively affect the satisfaction of tourists crossing an international boundary, while satisfaction is the positive and significant antecedent of BI. Moreover, the indirect effects of PV, SS and LC on BI via satisfaction are found to be significant.

Originality/value

The previous literature has not paid much attention to the satisfaction and BI of tourists crossing an international border. The present article contributes to the existing volume of knowledge related to the satisfaction and BI of cross-border tourists. The study results may be useful for tourism marketers to better understand the factors that affect the satisfaction and BI of cross-border tourists.

目的- 本文旨在分析感知价值

Propósito

El objetivo de este artículo es analizar la influencia del valor percibido (VP), la búsqueda de sensaciones (SS) y el bajo nivel de aglomeración percibido (BA) en la satisfacción y la intención de comportamiento (IC) de los turistas peregrinos indios en Kartarpur, Pakistán. Adicionalmente, identifica el efecto mediador de la satisfacción en la relación estructural entre VP, SS y BA, como variables exógenas, e IC, como variable endógena.

Diseño/metodología/enfoque

Mediante un muestreo de conveniencia, de los 510 cuestionarios distribuidos entre los turistas peregrinos indios que regresaban de Kartarpur Sahib, Pakistán, se utilizaron un total de 404 cuestionarios, completamente cumplimentados, para evaluar la solidez del marco teórico. El análisis de datos y la evaluación empírica del modelo propuesto se realizan mediante estadística descriptiva, análisis factorial confirmatorio (AFC) y modelos de ecuaciones estructurales (MEE).

Hallazgos

Los resultados revelan que el valor percibido, la búsqueda de sensaciones y el bajo nivel de aglomeración afectan positivamente a la satisfacción de los turistas transfronterizos, mientras que la satisfacción es el antecedente positivo y significativo de la intención de comportamiento. Además, son significativos los efectos indirectos del valor percibido, la búsqueda de sensaciones y el bajo nivel de aglomeración sobre la intención de comportamiento, a través de la satisfacción.

Originalidad/valor

La literatura no ha prestado mucha atención a la satisfacción y la intención de comportamiento de los turistas peregrinos que cruzan una frontera internacional. El presente artículo contribuye al conocimiento existente relacionado con la satisfacción y la intención de comportamiento de los turistas transfronterizos. Los resultados del estudio pueden ser útiles para que los especialistas en marketing turístico internacional comprendan mejor los factores que afectan a la satisfacción y la intención de comportamiento de los turistas transfronterizos.

Abstract

Purpose

In the present era, the achievement of employee Islamic performance has become a significant challenge for organizations. The purpose of the study is to examine the effect of Islamic leadership on employee Islamic performance directly and indirectly by bridging the connections between employees’ Islamic organizational values, Islamic organizational culture, and Islamic work motivation among the employees of Egyptian banks.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors used quantitative methods in this study and based its findings on the data received from 312 respondents in response to a questionnaire.

Findings

By using SmartPLS 4, this study’s findings demonstrate that Islamic leadership has a positive and significant effect on Islamic organizational values, culture, employee Islamic performance and work motivation. While Islamic organizational values and Islamic organizational culture do not significantly impact employee Islamic performance, Islamic work motivation is a significant predictor of employee Islamic performance. On the one hand, Islamic organizational values and Islamic organizational culture do not mediate the relationship between Islamic leadership and employee Islamic performance. On the other hand, Islamic work motivation is a mediating variable that significantly develops the relationship between Islamic leadership and employee Islamic performance.

Practical implications

The study’s findings support policymakers and human resource management practitioners to develop plans and strategies which enhance the Islamic performance of organizations’ employees. In addition, this study’s findings provide insights for researchers and academicians in developing Islamic leadership within their organizations so that they operate by Islamic values and codes.

Originality/value

Finally, by offering an integrated model of Islamic leadership, Islamic organizational values, Islamic organizational culture and employee Islamic performance, this study’s findings fill the gaps in the context of bank employees in a developing country, namely, Egypt.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of Islamic work ethics (IWEs) on the job satisfaction, commitment and loyalty among the bank employees in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan.

Design/methodology/approach

Data for this study was collected using the purposive sampling from 354 bank employees of Azad Jammu and Kashmir region.

Findings

The findings of this study support all the three proposed hypotheses, with IWEs demonstrating significant positive relationships with job satisfaction, organisational commitment and employee loyalty.

Practical implications

Because of the nature of operations, banks need energetic employees who can participate actively in work activities. The implementation of IWEs enables banks to improve their employees’ satisfaction, commitment and loyalty, which will benefit the organisation in the long term through improved performance.

Originality/value

By encouraging the adoption of IWEs, organisations can increase job satisfaction, employee’s commitment and loyalty in the workplace, especially in an Islamic banking context. Therefore, managers should strengthen the mutual understanding among employees regarding IWE principles. They should be consistently applied and disseminated by Islamic banks’ management in the form of a formal code of ethics that applies to all actions within the organisation. Besides, this study contributes in terms of divine command theory which was yet to be tested with employee’s behaviour. Loyalty was another behavioural attribute which is providing novelty while testing with IWEs in banking context.

Abstract

Purpose

The increasing ethical misconduct at job place demands to understand the role of ethics in a wide variety of disciplines. This paper aims to empirically investigate the mediating mechanism of life satisfaction and subjective happiness between Islamic work ethics – innovative work behavior (IWB) and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB).

Design/methodology/approach

The sample comprised 296 employees and 58 head of departments (HODs) of top 11 business schools in Pakistan. The data of the study were collected in three waves and from two different sources (faculty members and their HODs) through questionnaire. The statistical technique SEM analysis was applied to inspect the proposed direct and mediating hypotheses.

Findings

Taken together, the findings revealed that Islamic work ethics (IWE) improves quality of life and by following IWE at workplace, employees feel pleasure and show satisfaction from life. The results supported the mediating role of both life satisfaction and subjective happiness between IWE-IWB and IWE-OCB.

Practical implications

This study provides practical insight that Islamic business ethics plays an important role at workplace and improves quality of life and individual behavior.

Originality/value

The current research is unique, as it empirically investigates the mechanism quality of life phenomena which connects IWE and individual behavior (innovative and citizenship). The mechanism quality of life is less studied, and therefore this study fills the gap of scant literature.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to predict family takāful purchase intentions (FTPIs) using an extended theory of planned behavior (TPB) with relevant mediating and moderating factors.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is based on a survey of 384 Muslim employees who work in both government and private organizations. This study used partial least square structural equation model (PLS-SEM) for hypothesis testing, predictive relevance and measuring the effect size of the model.

Findings

The study found that attitude (ATT), subjective norms (SN), perceived behavioral control (PBC), saving motives (SM), promotional campaign (PC) and religiosity (RG) directly contribute to the prediction of FTPIs. Furthermore, ATT and SM partially mediate between PC and FTPI. Moreover, RG significantly moderates the association between ATT, SN, SM and FTPI, while RG insignificantly moderates the link between PBC and FTPI.

Practical implications

This study provides insight into understanding the factors leading to an enhanced understanding of FTPI in a country where the industry is growing very fast. Further, the study suggests informative and persuasive promotions to encourage FTPI in Bangladesh and similar countries.

Originality/value

This study provides insights into previously unaddressed FTPI among Muslim employees in Bangladesh and similar countries. Prior work on determining FTPI has not focused on promotional campaigns and saving motives, and thus, this study has extended TPB to understand the phenomenon.

Abstract

Purpose

Examining emotional solidarity that drives tourists’ nostalgia has received significant attention, offering valuable insights that can aid in the selection of a travel destination. However, tourists’ nostalgia, along with its antecedents—perceived safety risk and emotional solidarity, has gained less attention within the setting of Pakistan. Therefore, this research has been carried out and validated a research framework using the stimulus-organism-response model to investigate the links between perceived safety risk, emotional solidarity—welcoming nature, emotional closeness, sympathetic understanding, perceived nostalgia, and destination advocacy intentions. In addition, this model employed destination attachment—place identity and place dependence—as a boundary condition on the relationships between emotional solidarity and advocacy intentions.

Design/methodology/approach

This study collected 545 responses through two methods: offline distribution of print copies of the questionnaire and online surveys from domestic tourists who visited scenic destinations last year. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was performed using AMOS 26, and the PROCESS macro was conducted using IBM SPSS 28.

Findings

The findings highlighted that perceived safety risk negatively influences emotional solidarity—welcoming nature, emotional closeness, sympathetic understanding—, resulting in a positive effect on perceived nostalgia. Furthermore, tourists’ perceived nostalgia positively triggers advocacy intentions. The findings also confirmed the boundary conditions of destination attachment—place identity and place dependence—on the association between emotional solidarity and perceived nostalgia.

Practical implications

Three major practical implications of these findings: First, ensuring visitor safety with smart security measures, digital tools for quick response, and local community involvement. Second, highlighting local markets, art, and architecture to enrich cultural experiences and promote accessibility and diversity. Finally, using marketing to generate nostalgic experiences through local collaborations, professional storytelling, and engaging social media content to build emotional ties and curiosity.

Originality/value

In terms of originality, this is pioneering research intended at developing and validating the model in the context of Pakistani destinations. Furthermore, this marks the initial step in examining the proposed relationships between perceived safety risk and emotional solidarity in fostering tourists' perceived nostalgia, ultimately leading to a strong desire to advocate for the destination.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to determine the prospect of takaful funerals as an Islamic insurance product and its marketing strategy. The multicase study analyzed is the Takaful Funeral Amsterdam of Indonesia, launched in 2015, Millî Görüs of Turkey in 1970 and Arrahma of Morocco in 2006.

Design/methodology/approach

This study delivers an analytic hierarchy process to qualitatively and quantitatively describe Muslim customers’ priority choice and interest criteria for takaful funerals as a forerunner of Islamic insurance products.

Findings

Based on the priority choice and interest criteria, the highest priority element of takaful funeral products is market need (49.21%). The group subcriteria were dominant compared to the individual subcriteria. Product design is the second choice (20.9%), with function as the priority in subcriteria.

Practical implications

This indicates that the Muslim community urgently needs funeral service products that are consistent with Islamic law, which emphasizes its function. The market needs as the highest priority element implies that bundling products, affordable prices and simple design are the most suitable methods for developing takaful funeral products in Indonesia.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to discuss Islamic funerals in Indonesia, with the potential to be further developed with the increasing need of the Islamic insurance industry for new products. Previous research did not examine the PPME Al-Ikhlas Takaful Amsterdam, Millî Görüs of Turkey and Arrahma of Morocco as case studies for developing Islamic funeral insurance in Indonesia. Therefore, this gives the present study high originality.
