Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore university students' multitasking behavior in online classrooms and their influence on academic performance. Also, the study examined students' opinions.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 302 university students fulfilled an online survey. Ten questions were focused on demographic information, five items evaluated online class behavior of students, 9 items evaluated self-efficacy and four items measured academic performance.

Findings

Multitasking behavior was found to negatively influence self-efficacy of −0.332, whereas self-efficacy showed a positive influence of 0.325 on academic performance. Cronbach's alpha and average variance extracted values were 0.780 and 0.527 (multitasking behavior), 0.875 and 0.503 (self-efficacy), 0.781 and 0.601 (academic performance). Outcomes of the bootstrapping test showed that the path coefficients are significant.

Originality/value

The research findings may help university managers understand undergraduates’ online and face-to-face behavior and strategies to improve the behavior to ensure the best academic outcomes. The novelty is based on using the partial least square structural equation modeling technique.

Abstract

The higher education after the pandemic has put the entire university education system to test, bringing to light the need to build a genuinely sustainable academic system composed of administrative, pedagogical, and governance processes with a social and environmental scope and oriented to the training of resilient professionals, with the ability to manage a sustainable future. Seen from a management perspective, the actors of this system have begun to work focusing on rebuilding the postpandemic world into a sustainable planet for the continuity of humanity. Regarding students, the most affected individuals by the health crisis, UNESCO indicates that the impact of the temporary cessation of on-site activities has affected them in various dimensions in terms of student stability, bringing with it more significant evidence of crises due to social, emotional, cultural, and familiar problems, among others. In that sense, the change of means of interaction in student environments represents a negative turning point in the future of professionals who are now receiving education. This allows us to reflect on the high risks involved in achieving the acquisition of not only technical and specific skills and competencies of the professional specialties but also social, ethical, and citizenship skills that take much greater relevance, especially in this context.

Abstract

The following chapter aims to investigate the impact on the prices of inferior goods from COVID-19, a global pandemic with a spread never before seen, and in order to stipulate the possible consequences, a contrast was made with past world crises in order to speculate the state in which the country and its citizens would be economically benefited. The chapter has been based on articles previously carried out by specialists, said essays, likewise, that have been contrasted by different authors; therefore, it could be stipulated that the methodology used throughout the trial was the one applied, since it was based on prior knowledge from great scholars on the subject. The results found indicate that, even though the country is in an uncertain outlook, the possibilities of economic recovery are high since previous economic crises denote large drops in money fluctuation with a high rate of recovery.

Abstract

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, its importance, and its difficulties have been defined. This chapter seeks to present the digital tools that have been used during the pandemic period and that have been focused on promoting STEM education at different levels. The efforts made by educational organizations worldwide are mentioned. Different regions are shown presenting the best experiences of digital tools that enhance the elements of STEM and can be extended to different levels of education from elementary school to university. On the other hand, successful experiences of the use of technological tools from the teachers' point of view are shown, depicting the tools that have worked the most during the process of adapting to online classes to devise a much better educational plan that continues to take advantage of digital tools for STEM education.

Abstract

In a pandemic framework (COVID-19), this chapter explores the impact of the global economy and socio-cultures concerning three axes: recreational, tourism, and hospitality. Although we slowly see an economic revival, it is well known that this sector of study is very susceptible to being affected by the context of nations. Following restrictions and measures taken by governments around the world to reduce the number of cases of coronavirus infections, many nations closed their borders, affecting international travel and by 2020 tourism had been reduced to the near cessation of operations due to the imminent fear of this poorly studied disease, and the service sector was negatively affected. It should be added that, according to the World Tourism Organization's projections, a decrease of between 20 and 30% is forecast for 2020 compared to the previous year.

Abstract

The tension between the United States and China has not ended, despite the lengthy negotiations carried out in 2019 to appease differences and decrease protectionism over the technology industry, since the trade war was producing devastating consequences for both powers and international trade. The resurgence of tension is due to two main factors, such as mutual accusations about who is to blame for the origin of COVID-19 and the use of the new 5G mobile technology by Chinese companies like ZTE and Huawei. We developed an in-depth analysis of the consequences on international prices of the technology industry and international trade due to the reappearance of the trade conflict between China and the United States. This analysis will be carried out through the application of economic theories. There is greater distrust in the technology sector, and this produces a variation in the price of the technology industry. Likewise, according to Marshall's law of demand and supply, this effect can be explained more accurately; since there was a lower demand for technological products, the digital industry will have to lower its prices to generate income.

Abstract

Efforts to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals are increasingly part of tourism business planning, forming part of their business policies, linking with society and generating a sustainable hotel offer. The great impact it causes and, which in the short term it will achieve, digital tools in hotel activities can be evidenced. It will also help to collect the information that serves for the certifications of hotel companies. In spite of all the efforts, there is still a great knowledge gap that needs to be filled to achieve the expected business results and that it can be evidenced that the hospitality industry is now more than ever focussed on the care of its workers and on contributing to the sustainability of the world.
