Abstract
Uses information gathered from the advanced manufacturing technology (AMT) literature to develop an integrated conceptual framework for effectively planning and implementing these systems. Then examines the efficacy of this framework by investigating the relationship between adoption of various advanced manufacturing technology (AMT), the way that firms plan for and implement them and their eventual performance. A detailed survey instrument was administered to a cross‐section of manufacturing firms in the USA to collect the required data. The results of this investigation indicate that the rate of adoption for integrated technologies was higher among firms that adopted more extensive formal planning approaches. In addition, these firms were found to be outperforming other firms. Also provides managerial and research implications of these and the other findings of this study.

Abstract
While some reports on successes of advanced manufacturing technologies (AMT) have been glowing, many companies have tossed millions of dollars worth of fancy equipment into their factories and wound up with little to show for it. It is becoming clear that many of the AMT failures today can be attributed to an inadequate planning process. Proposes a four‐stage research framework that addresses issues in: planning the manufacturing system; planning for an appropriate infrastructure; planning for new relationships with the external environment; and justifying investment in AMT. Assesses the strengths and weaknesses of selected contributions in each stage, and identifies gaps in knowledge where research is needed. The framework devised should help tomorrow’s research build on the past and increase the research’s acceptance by industry, since it draws on both research‐ and practitioner‐based literature along with findings of the field study.

Abstract
This study uses information obtained from the advanced manufacturing technology (AMT) literature to develop a conceptual framework that seeks to illustrate the impact of the management information systems (MIS) department on the different facets of AMT adoption. A detailed survey instrument was administered to a cross‐section of manufacturing firms in the USA to collect the data required to test five hypotheses relating to the efficacy of this framework. The results of this study indicate that the proposed framework is particularly useful in explaining the role of MIS departments in firms that are attempting to integrate advanced process and information technologies. This finding and other results of this study and their implications are discussed.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to explore the relationship between success parameters and implementation of advanced manufacturing technology (AMT); and second, to examine the changes required in manufacturing system as a result of AMT implementation.
Design/methodology/approach
The first order confirmatory factor analysis was performed to validate the presence of observed variables on their respective latent variable. Structural equation modeling is used to test the considered eight hypotheses.
Findings
The finding indicates that all five success factors are positively related to the AMT implementation. The redesign in the production system and organization strategy is directly related to the AMT implementation. The notable finding is the AMT implementation has no direct impact on the redesign of human resource, but it has mediated impact through the production system.
Research limitations/implications
The originality and reliability of data collected for research purpose merely depends upon information and the accessible resources.
Originality/value
The outcome of the present work gives rise to meaningful implications for researchers and practitioners as well.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to find the relationships among advanced manufacturing technology (AMT), innovation, export and firm performance by using data obtained from 310 Turkish manufacturing firms.
Design/methodology/approach
A survey study was performed to obtain data from manufacturing firms. Multiple-item scales were adapted from the literature to conduct the survey in this study. Data were collected from five cities located in the Southeastern Anatolia Region in Turkey (Gaziantep, Adiyaman, Kilis, Diyarbakir and Sanliurfa). Structural equation modeling was utilized to investigate the relationships among AMT, innovation, export and firm performance in Turkish manufacturing firms operating in several industries. The direct and indirect relations between these variables are examined in the proposed conceptual model. In addition, the complex relations including in the proposed model are assessed in detail through the mediation analysis.
Findings
Six of the proposed ten hypotheses related to manufacturers are validated by the empirical evidence from manufacturing companies in Turkey. Significant findings obtained in this study include the following: there are strong positive associations between the use of AMT and innovation and between export and firm performance. In addition, innovation mediates the relationship between AMT and firm performance and between AMT and export. Finally, export mediates the relationship between AMT and firm performance and between innovation and firm performance. It is expected that the results obtained from this empirical analysis will help decision makers and managers to construct a good technology and production management strategy for manufacturing systems.
Originality/value
In this study, a novel conceptual model is proposed to examine the relationships among AMT, innovation, export and firm performance via the use of survey responses from 310 Turkish manufacturing firms. To the authors’ best knowledge, this is the first study that proposes such a conceptual model in the literature.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to provide details of a survey conducted into 300 manufacturing SMEs from a range of different industrial sectors. The survey investigates, over a three‐year period, the attitudes towards and benefits obtained by SMEs through the adoption of Advanced Manufacturing Technologies (AMT). Its purpose is to analyse and disseminate these survey data to academics and industrialists.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper uses a research survey of 300 manufacturing SMEs. Analysis of the findings is provided and SME characterisation tables are developed.
Findings
The paper finds that characterisation, compatibility and innovativeness of SMEs towards AMT implementation were found to vary considerably with the SMEs surveyed. From the survey information, the paper develops a classification system based on the capabilities of these companies to implement Advanced Manufacturing Technologies. The paper will then characterise SME attitudes towards the development of AMT. The paper finally proposes a strategic model for the effective introduction and application of AMT in SMEs.
Research limitations/implications
The survey is limited to SMEs and provides a strong body of evidence relating to AMT development with these companies.
Practical implications
The paper proposes a strategic model for the effective introduction and application of AMT in SMEs. The creation of a generic AMT implementation model provides a framework for a wider number of SMEs to introduce AMT into their respective organisations, since it provides for a systematic approach for SMEs to introduce AMT in an efficient and effective manner, thus reducing implementation costs, minimises risk of project failure and improves project management efficiency.
Originality/value
This paper is the first to explore in depth the AMT implementation issues within SMEs from large‐scale survey data. It not only analyses the survey data but also proposes a model for change, which aims to develop a more structured approach to AMT implementation in SMEs. Therefore, this work will make a contribution to this under‐researched area.

Abstract
Purpose
This study has analyzed strategic issues in implementing advanced manufacturing technologies (AMTs) in manufacturing organizations in India and their relative importance.
Design/methodology/approach
A survey of manufacturing organizations was conducted, and the data were analyzed using statistical tools (one-sample t-tests, correlation and regression analyses).
Findings
Improvement in product quality and flexibility of operations are the motivation for AMTs implementation. Top management support and sound financial conditions are essential for implementing AMTs. Successful implementation of AMTs helps in reducing the lead time and improving overall business performance.
Research limitations/implications
The findings of this study will help organizations in the implementation of AMTs for improving productivity and business performance. The study is limited to manufacturing organizations in India.
Practical implications
Organizations should allocate sufficient funds for AMT applications. Organizational culture should be made conducive to the adoption of new technologies. Employees should be provided adequate training for its successful implementation.
Originality/value
The main contribution of this paper is that it provides a detailed analysis of strategic issues for implementing AMTs in manufacturing organizations.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims at providing new evidence on the relationship between advanced manufacturing technologies (AMTs) and quality management (QM) practices on manufacturing performance.
Design/methodology/approach
The expected relationship between both AMTs and QM practices on manufacturing performance are tested using a unique sample of 301 manufacturing companies from Argentina (151) and Uruguay (150), employing at least 20 workers, which have been assessed through personal interviews to plant managers and engineers.
Findings
Findings evidence the complementarities between QM practices and AMTs to explain enhanced manufacturing performance. Although QM practices have a direct effect on manufacturing performance, the effects of AMTs are significant only in the presence of QM practices.
Research limitations/implications
First limitation of the paper is the cross-sectional character of the data analysis. Secondly, the paper cannot avoid the disadvantages inherent in research based on surveys, especially when the answers are of a subjective nature. In addition, the information used is based on the perceptions of managers.
Practical implications
Industry practitioners should focus on the implementation of innovation policies that promote long-term economic growth, creating more favorable and better technological and infrastructure institutional conditions to lead to substantial improvements in this economic growth.
Originality/value
The paper provides evidence on the interdependence between QM practices and AMTs’ adoption to improve performance of manufacturing companies in the south of Latin America, something that has received very little attention up today. Thus, the paper contributes also to the international debate on differences observed in the implementation of manufacturing innovations in different regions.

Abstract
Purpose
Although, the advanced manufacturing technologies (AMT) benefits and potentialities are already known, issues regarding the management process, from the planning to the implementation, represent the main barriers to the effective use of such technologies. The actual benefits of the AMT incorporation to the manufacturing system, classified as systemic, will only be obtained and recognized if the current design and organizational structure become compatible with the change being introduced. The purpose of this paper is to present the rationality for the organizational design development related to AMT adoption.
Design/methodology/approach
The developed theoretical synthesis integrates two refined and tested frameworks: the organizational design and the strategic selections of AMT. The company's manufacturing strategy, specifically the manufacturing vision, defines a set of statements, the required competences, which constitute the organizational design specifications. By approaching the AMT as resources related to the manufacturing vision competences, it could be assured the cohesion between the organizational design and the technology to be introduced. The theoretical development is illustrated by some empirical data, particularly in the cases of competences, capabilities and manufacturing vision statements formulation.
Findings
This paper is a theoretical construction that organizes and synthesizes the issues that are being studied in the main theme: “The adoption of the automated systems,” focusing the discussion on the manufacturing strategy and organizational design domains.
Research limitations/implications
The generated framework is theoretical in essence and needs to be tested, although the theoretical exercise integrates tested frameworks.
Practical implications
The understanding of the relationships between the process of AMT adoption and the required changes in the organization contribute to the attainment of the benefits related to those technologies.
Originality/value
The main value of the present paper is the theoretical exercise to generate a set of recommendations of the organizational design‐revision process. The systemic design approached used will found future research to generate practical solutions for the design process, contributing to the AMT integration to the manufacturing system.

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the enablers for improving the utilization level of advanced manufacturing technologies (AMTs) in Indian manufacturing industry.
Design/methodology/approach
In this paper, a large number of manufacturing organizations have been extensively surveyed, to ascertain the contributions made by success factors of AMTs towards realizing manufacturing performance improvements. The correlations between enablers of AMTs' utilization and manufacturing performance parameters have been evaluated and validated by employing various statistical tools.
Findings
The paper focuses upon significant contributions of AMTs' success factors namely: education and training of employees; interdisciplinary team formation; rewards and recognition to employees; and industry‐institute interaction, towards affecting improvements in manufacturing performance in Indian industry. The inter‐relationships between various AMTs' utilization success factors with the manufacturing performance parameters have been evaluated.
Research limitations/implications
The study has been conducted only in Northern Indian manufacturing organizations.
Originality/value
The paper highlights the strong potential for enablers of AMTs' utilization in improving organizational performance parameters.
