Abstract

Purpose

This paper presents and investigates a method named M×N‐ary chaotic pulse‐width‐position modulation (CPWPM) which is based on the combination of M‐ary chaotic pulse‐position modulation (CPPM) and N‐ary chaotic pulse‐width modulation (CPWM) in order to provide a better performance in noise‐affected environments as well as improve significantly bit rate.

Design/methodology/approach

Analysis of schemes for modulator and demodulator are presented in detail through describing the schemes of the individual methods and their combination. Theoretical evaluation of bit‐error rate (BER) performance in presence of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) is provided. Chaotic behavior with tent map in variation of modulation parameters is also investigated. In order to verify the theoretical analyses, numerical simulations are carried out and their results are reported.

Findings

Both evaluation and simulation results show that when the number of symbols increases, the bit rate is improved significantly but the BER performance is just slightly worse. This makes M×N‐ary CPWPM become an effective method for chaos‐based digital communication.

Originality/value

Although CPPM, CPWM and M‐ary modulation methods have been described in the literature separately, their combination is presented and investigated for the first time in this paper.

Abstract

Classifies previous research on the links between earnings management and managerial opportunism into studies of the links between earnings‐based compensation schemes and opportunistic, short‐term earnings management; and earnings management around CEO changes. Suggests some reasons why the sensitivity of compensation to earnings and stock return performance measures might change over the length of CEO tenure and presents a study of 1970‐1991 US data to examine this. Finds that sensitivity to earnings is greater than to stock returns and that the significance of both varies during the first and second halves of tenure, as does the use of discretionar accruals. Considers the underlying reasons for this, consistency with other research and the implications for research and practice.

Abstract

Purpose

Business process modeling has been given great attention due to its crucial role in developing computer-based systems that support (and automate) organizational processes. In information systems, building the right process architecture is vital, since a poor division of organizational processes can lead to complex designs or incoherent structure. Moreover, process architecture acts as a “big picture” of what the organization does, and represents dynamic relationships between the existing processes, which, in turn, helps understand how the organization works (Ould, 2005). The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper discusses the derivation of a process architecture diagram (PAD) using the Riva method in detail, in contrast to the PAD developed using Architecture of Integrated Information Systems (ARIS). The information system selected as an example for this comparative study is in the context of academic libraries, embedding various yet generic library processes.

Findings

Organizational process architecture provides a basis for business management, based on specific framework supported by integrated tools and methods (Kozina, 2006). ARIS and Riva process architecture methods can be used to visualize and document organizational processes. Understanding the merits and weaknesses of each method is essential to identify possible areas of application.

Research limitations/implications

The processes selected were generic in most academic libraries not taking into consideration special personalized processes. These can be added though.

Practical implications

Both techniques are feasible and can be used to view and analyze library processes, allowing bridging the gap between theory and practice.

Originality/value

A number of process architecture methods are available, however, few studies focused on assessing these methods, and comparing some of them to find out how easy they are to be used in particular contexts, and whether they can be standardized.

Man has been seeking an ideal existence for a very long time. In this existence, justice, love, and peace are no longer words, but actual experiences. How ever, with the American preemptive invasion and occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq and the subsequent prisoner abuse, such an existence seems to be farther and farther away from reality. The purpose of this work is to stop this dangerous trend by promoting justice, love, and peace through a change of the paradigm that is inconsistent with justice, love, and peace. The strong paradigm that created the strong nation like the U.S. and the strong man like George W. Bush have been the culprit, rather than the contributor, of the above three universal ideals. Thus, rather than justice, love, and peace, the strong paradigm resulted in in justice, hatred, and violence. In order to remove these three and related evils, what the world needs in the beginning of the third millenium is the weak paradigm. Through the acceptance of the latter paradigm, the golden mean or middle paradigm can be formulated, which is a synergy of the weak and the strong paradigm. In order to understand properly the meaning of these paradigms, however, some digression appears necessary.

Abstract

Purpose

Academic libraries have witnessed huge changes due to internal and external factors. Recent evidence shows that there is a lack of interest in process analysis within academic libraries. There is a lot written on the need to change academic libraries but there is little analytical research that investigates processes, in terms of the process architecture. The paper aims to discuss this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

The modelling tool used is Architecture of Integrated Information Systems (ARIS).

Findings

ARIS can provide a process architecture and design for academic libraries that might raise questions later about procedures and some inefficiencies.

Research limitations/implications

Library managers might need to learn new techniques.

Originality/value

There is a lot written on the need to change academic libraries but there is little analytical research that investigates processes, in terms of the process architecture. This research examines business process modelling for academic libraries, focusing on the process architecture, as a way of visualizing, understanding and documenting processes.

Abstract

The Fair Labor Standards Act (here in after referred to as the FLSA or Act, 1938) requires that most employees in the U.S. be paid at least the federal minimum wage for all hours worked and receive overtime pay at one and one‐half times the regular rate for all hours worked over 40 hours in a work‐week. Defined within the Act are certain types of employees who are exempt from both minimum wage and overtime pay, i.e., if a worker is employed as a bonafide executive, administrative, professional, outside sales, or computer employee. These exempt categories are cumulatively referred to as the white collar exemption and the workers are called white collar employees. To qualify for such exemptions the job description and/or employment contract must meet certain salary and job duties tests. The past thirty years have seen these tests become outdated resulting in uncertainty and ambiguity in their application. On April 24, 2004 the Wage and Hour Division of the U. S. Department of Labor responded to these decades‐old exemption descriptions with new regulations relating to white collar exemptions of the Act called the FairPay Over time Initiative (here in after referred to asFPOI). The purpose of the new FLSA regulations was to modernize, update, and clarify the criteria for these exemptions and to eliminate legal problems that the prior regulations caused.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to exploit the lowest common ancestor technique in an m-ary data aggregation tree in the fog computing-enhanced IoT to assist in contact tracing in COVID-19. One of the promising characteristics of the Internet of Things (IoT) that can be used to save the world from the current crisis of COVID-19 pandemic is data aggregation. As the number of patients infected by the disease is already huge, the data related to the different attributes of patients such as patient thermal image record and the previous health record of the patient is going to be gigantic. The authors used the technique of data aggregation to efficiently aggregate the sensed data from the patients and analyse it. Among the various inferences drawn from the aggregated data, one of the most important is contact tracing. Contact tracing in COVID-19 deals with finding out a person or a group of persons who have infected or were infected by the disease.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors propose to exploit the technique of lowest common ancestor in an m-ary data aggregation tree in the Fog-Computing enhanced IoT to help the health-care experts in contact tracing in a particular region or community. In this research, the authors argue the current scenario of COVID-19 pandemic, finding the person or a group of persons who has/have infected a group of people is of extreme importance. Finding the individuals who have been infected or are infecting others can stop the pandemic from worsening by stopping the community transfer. In a community where the outbreak has spiked, the samples from either all the persons or the patients showing the symptoms are collected and stored in an m-ary tree-based structure sorted over time.

Findings

Contact tracing in COVID-19 deals with finding out a person or a group of persons who have infected or were infected by the disease. The authors exploited the technique of lowest common ancestor in an m-ary data aggregation tree in the fog-computing-enhanced IoT to help the health-care experts in contact tracing in a particular region or community. The simulations were carried randomly on a set of individuals. The proposed algorithm given in Algorithm 1 is executed on the samples collected at level-0 of the simulation model, and to aggregate the data and transmit the data, the authors implement Algorithm 2 at the level-1. It is found from the results that a carrier can be easily identified from the samples collected using the approach designed in the paper.

Practical implications

The work presented in the paper can aid the health-care experts fighting the COVID-19 pandemic by reducing the community transfer with efficient contact tracing mechanism proposed in the paper.

Social implications

Fighting COVID-19 efficiently and saving the humans from the pandemic has huge social implications in the current times of crisis.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the lowest common ancestor technique in m-ary data aggregation tree in the fog computing-enhanced IoT to contact trace the individuals who have infected or were infected during the transmission of COVID-19 is first of its kind proposed. Creating a graph or an m-ary tree based on the interactions/connections between the people in a particular community like location, friends and time, the authors can attempt to traverse it to find out who infected any two persons or a group of persons or was infected by exploiting the technique of finding out the lowest common ancestor in a m-ary tree.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present how iterative round‐trip modelling between two different business process modelling tools can be enabled on a conceptual level. Iterative round‐trip modelling addresses model transformations between high‐level business and executable process models, and how to maintain these transformations in change time. Currently, the development of these process models is supported by different tools. To the authors' best knowledge, no coherent collaborative tool environment exists that supports iterative round‐trip modelling.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper is primarily based on a literature review of state‐of‐the‐art business to IT transformations regarding business process modelling. The architecture of integrated information systems (ARIS) and Cordys tools are used as an example case in this research. ARIS is a business process analysis (BPA) tool suited for analyzing and designing business processes, while the execution and monitoring of these processes is allowed by Cordys, a business process management suite (BPMS). The theory is used for transforming between ARIS event‐driven process chains from the business perspective and business process modelling notation in Cordys from the IT perspective.

Findings

A conceptual framework is proposed to couple a BPA and BPMS tool for round‐trip business process modelling. The framework utilizes concepts from the model‐driven architecture for structurally addressing interoperability and model transformations. Ensuring iterative development with two tools requires traceability of model transformations.

Practical implications

In many organizations, BPA and BPMS tools are used for business process modelling. These are in practice often two different worlds, while they concern around the same business processes. Maintaining multiple versions of the same process models across two tools is a considerable task, as they often are subject to design changes. Interoperability between a BPA and BPMS tool will minimize redundant activities, and reduce business to IT deployment time.

Originality/value

This research provides a theoretical base for coupling a BPA and BPMS tool regarding iterative round‐trip modelling. It provides an overview of the current state‐of‐the‐art literature of business process modelling transformations, and what is necessary for maintaining interoperability between tools. The findings indicate what is expected in tool support for iterative development in business process modelling from analysis and design to execution.

Reports on a survey conducted to investigate acute respiratory infections (ARI) in children in developing countries, looking particularly at the Philippines. Explores the role of the National Committee for Acute Respiratory Infections and states its objectives and responsibilities. Asserts that state of health is associated with community structure, environmental factors, and social and psychological conditions. Finds also that maternal factors are important determinants in the incidence of ARI episodes, for example, the mother’s characteristics, level of health knowledge, her illness control activities, age, level of education, number of children, smoking behaviour, and the extent to which she has to fulfil other tasks. Explains the methodology used in the survey, the sampling procedure and research instruments used. Indicates that poor housing and living conditions should become the focal point of developmental efforts, and that better nipping in the bud health management should be encouraged through health education programmes.
