Abstract
Purpose
This paper explores how conflicting institutional logics shape the behaviors of macro- and micro-level actors in their use of a calculative practice. Thereby, this paper explains how quantification can undermine the intended purpose of a governance system based on a single number.
Design/methodology/approach
The study draws upon the literature on calculative practices and institutional logics to present the case of how a single number—specifically the conversion factor for Atlantic Cod, established by macro-level actors for the purposes of governance within the Norwegian fishing industry—is interpreted and used by micro-level actors in the industry. The study is based on documents, field observations and interviews with fishers, landing facilities, and control authorities.
Findings
The use of the conversion factor, while intended to protect fish stock and govern industry actions, does not always align with the institutional logics of micro-level actors. Especially during the winter season, these actors may seek to serve their interests, leading to potential system gaming. The reliance on a single number that overlooks seasonal nuances can motivate unintended behaviors, undermining the governance system’s intentions.
Originality/value
Integrating the literature on calculative practices with an institutional logics perspective, this study offers novel insights into the challenges of using quantification for the governance of complex industries. In particular, the paper reveals that when the logics of macro- and micro-level actors conflict in a single-number governance system, unintended outcomes arise due to a domination of the macro-level logics.

Purpose
This paper aims to provide a historical overview of AA, its purpose and benefits, the legal rationale for the SCOTUS ruling and what it means for colleges and the workplace regarding equitable opportunities for minority groups (which include women, Blacks, Hispanics, Asians and other low-income populations), as they aim for the “American dream”.

Findings
The race-based affirmative action (AA) precedent was recently overturned by the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) in the case of Students for Fair Admission (SFFA), Inc. vs President and Fellows of Harvard College/University of North Carolina. SCOTUS ruled that race cannot be a specific basis for college admission. In other words, public and private colleges and universities will no longer be able to consider “race” as a factor in deciding which qualified applicants should be admitted to enhance the diversity of their student body.

Abstract
Purpose
Drawing on the conservation of resources (COR) theory, this study aims to examine the effects of servant leadership and despotic leadership on employees’ happiness at work (HAW) through job crafting.
Design/methodology/approach
To test the hypothesized relationships, the data were collected from 309 Pakistani employees. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data.
Findings
The findings showed that servant leadership is an optimal leadership style for creating employees’ HAW. In addition, job crafting was found to mediate the effects of servant leadership on employees’ broad-based positive attitudinal outcome (HAW). Moreover, results showed that despotic leadership negatively influences employees’ HAW through job crafting.
Originality/value
This study is novel as it investigates how newer forms of positive (servant) and negative (despotic) leadership styles influence employees’ multidimensional attitudinal outcome (HAW) via job crafting. By doing so, this research extends the nomological network of servant leadership, despotic leadership, job crafting and HAW.

Abstract
Financial instability and economic crises are closely intertwined. There is no universally accepted definition. The term ‘stability’ or ‘instability’ refers to the behaviour of the system rather than to individual institutions. However, one cannot rule out that failure of a single financial institution can trigger significant financial turmoil as was happened in 2007–08 global financial crises. Like unstable equilibrium, instability implies inability to correct itself on its own. Instability, if it persists, turns into a crisis. In the above backdrop, the objective of this chapter is to investigate the financial crises and instability viewed both from economic and international political economy perspectives with a tale of four generation crisis models as it has been evolved over time to explain the phenomenon of different types of crises.

Abstract
The UK government has taken the lead in accelerating the capacity of higher education to engage with sustainability accounting and adopting a novel systematic approach toward a collective implementation of and contribution to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The UN SDG 16 “Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions” promotes the (re)building of effective and accountable institutions. In line with the institutional logics metatheory, we provide empirical evidence on how the alignment between social mechanisms alongside the reputation of higher education institutions (HEIs) and SDGs on transparent and responsible service (SDG 16) affect the students' overall experience. Using a sample of 142 UK HEIs, interpretative content analysis and ordinary least squares, the results show that integrating HEIs' responsible-oriented research agenda proactively with high sustainability reputation adds significantly to greater student satisfaction.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to examine empirically the impacts of gender differences, telecommunication technology (ICT) and other determinants on private savings in 28 selected Asia–Pacific countries.
Design/methodology/approach
This study employs the panel data from 2010 to 2017 across 28 selected Asia–Pacific countries. To enhance robustness and address the possibility of endogeneity issue, the present study utilises the fixed effect instrumental variable (IV) estimator to estimate the private savings model for Asia–Pacific region.
Findings
The present study finds that private savings is positively related to disposable income and ICT, but it is negatively associated with the degree of dependency. However, the association between interest rates and private savings are inconclusive as both positive substitution and negative income effects on private savings were observed. Moreover, the results also indicate that working females tend to save less than working males and that of the educated female, despite their impacts are varied across educational attainment levels.
Originality/value
This study provides a novel insight into private savings patterns by focussing upon the gender differences and ICT aspects. In stark contrast to previous literature on the issue, the authors find that working and educated females negatively impact private savings in Asia–Pacific economies due to income inequality and consumption habits. However, the results show that ICT accelerates private savings as it provides easy access to financial services and the requisite frameworks, such as e-business platforms, for generating passive income as well as provide the modalities for more cost-efficient shopping such as price and product comparison frames that yield costs savings which can then be potentially channelled into private savings.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to identify and analyse critical barriers to cloud manufacturing (CM) adoption for achieving sustainability amongst manufacturing micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in an emerging economy.
Design/methodology/approach
Initially, through a literature survey and expert inputs, this study identified and finalized 21 critical barriers to CM adoption, which were further analysed by employing a hybrid multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach. In this approach, the best–worst method (BWM) was used to rank the identified barriers. However, to analyse the interrelation amongst these barriers and classify them into the cause-effect group, the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) method was employed. Furthermore, the study recommended various strategies that can help overcome high-priority barriers and enhance CM adoption within firms.
Findings
The results of the study show that organizational, legal and economic barriers are the high-priority barriers that need to be addressed to enhance CM adoption.
Practical implications
The findings of the study will help managers and decision-makers in manufacturing MSMEs develop effective strategies and policies to enhance CM adoption.
Originality/value
Notably, this investigation is one of the preliminary research activities to explore the sustainability aspect of CM adoption amongst MSMEs in an emerging economy.

Abstract
Purpose
This study investigates (1) whether democratization drives sovereign credit ratings (SCR) changes (the “democratic advantage”) or whether SCR changes affect democratization, (2) whether the degree of democratization in sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries affects the associations and (3) whether the associations are significantly affected by resource dependence.
Design/methodology/approach
This study investigates the effects of SCR changes on democracy in 22 SSA countries over the period of 2000–2020 VEC Granger causality/block exogeneity Wald tests, and impulse responses and variance decomposition analyses with Cholesky ordering and Monte Carlo standard errors in a panel VECM framework.
Findings
The full sample impulse responses find that a SCR shock has a long-run detrimental effect on the democracy and political rights but only a short-run positive impact on civil liberties. Among the sub-samples, it is found that the extent of natural resource dependence does not affect the magnitude of SCR shocks on democratization mentioned above but it is found that a SCR shock affects long-run democracy in SSA countries that are relatively more democratic but is more likely to drive democratic deepening in less democratic SSA countries. The full sample variance decompositions further finds that the variance of SCR to a political rights shock outweighs the effects of all the macroeconomic factors, whereas in more diversified SSA countries, the variances of SCR are much greater for democracy and political rights shocks, which suggests that democratization and political rights in diversified SSA economies are severely affected by SCR changes. In the case of the high and low democracy sub-samples, it is found that the variance of SCR in the relatively higher democracy sub-sample is greater than in the low democracy sub-sample.
Social implications
These results have three implications for democratization in SSA. First, the effect of a SCR change is not a democratically agnostic and impacts political rights to a greater extent than civil liberties. Second, SCR changes have the potential to spark a negative cycle in SSA countries whereby a downgrade leads to a deterioration in socio-political stability coupled with increased financial economic constraints that in turn drive further downgrades and macroeconomic hardship. Finally, SCR changes are potentially detrimental for democracy in more democratic SSA countries but democratically supportive in less democratic SSA countries. Thus, SSA countries that are relatively politically sophisticated are more exposed to the effects of SCR changes, whereas less politically sophisticated SSA countries can proactively shape their SCRs by undertaking political reforms.
Originality/value
This study is the first to examine the associations between SCR and democracy in SSA. This is critical literature for the Africa’s scholarly work given that the debate on unfair rating actions and claims of subjective rating methods is ongoing.

Increasing demand for goods and services strains environmental sustainability, driving interest in green products. Trust in these products is vital for adoption. Scholars have examined factors affecting green trust, but a comprehensive framework involving cognitive and affective factors as antecedents and behavioral outcomes as consequences is lacking. This study aims to address this gap and introduces cultural and socio-demographic variables as moderators.
Design/methodology/approach
The study consolidates the outcomes of 79 empirical publications on green trust and conducts a meta-analysis.
Findings
All the cognitive and affective factors and behavioral outcomes are significantly associated with green trust. The moderator analysis provides many valuable insights as it highlights the context dependency of various relationships of green trust.
Research limitations/implications
Using an extensive literature review, this study introduces an integrated framework that clarifies the antecedents and consequences of green trust. This work enriches the existing body of knowledge by investigating the influence of cultural and socio-demographic factors as moderators on these relationships, offering significant insights into the realm of green trust.
Practical implications
This research yields valuable guidance for providers of green products/services, shedding light on the factors that foster trust in their offerings and emphasizing the importance of customized strategies that take into account cultural and socio-demographic variables.
Originality/value
This is an original study that contributes to the green trust literature.
