Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to identify the core values and key success factors in strategic sourcing; and to examine the importance of strategic sourcing and the key success factors in the Hong Kong toy industry. In addition, the relationship between the implementation of the key factors and sourcing performance in the Hong Kong toy industry are investigated.

Design/methodology/approach

The empirical research is based on a questionnaire survey that collected data from 205 Hong Kong toy companies. The survey investigated the degree of importance of key success strategic sourcing factors and the extent of implementation of the key factors in the companies. Furthermore, the sourcing performance of the companies was measured to investigate its relationship with the implementation of the key factors.

Findings

The research identifies five core values and 14 key success factors in strategic sourcing through literature reviews. The survey findings indicate that the identified key success factors are important and positively related to the sourcing performance. Moreover, the results show that the implementation of strategic sourcing in the Hong Kong toy industry is lagging behind the degree of importance of strategic sourcing.

Research limitations/implications

Since there is a gap between the implementation and importance of strategic sourcing, there is room for the Hong Kong toy industry to improve sourcing performance by addressing the 14 key success factors.

Originality/value

The paper identifies the key success strategic sourcing factors to improve sourcing performance in the Hong Kong toy industry.

Abstract

Purpose

To explore alliance managers' perceptions of the most significant determinants of strategic alliance success in the software sector.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is based on 30 key informant interviews and a survey of 143 alliance managers.

Findings

While both structural and process factors are important, the most significant factors affecting alliance success are the adaptability and openness of the alliance partners, human resource practices and partners' learning capability during implementation. Alliance partners should pay more attention to operational implementation issues as an alliance evolves, in order to achieve successful cooperative relationships.

Research limitations/implications

This research has responded to the call for more empirical study of the underlying causes of successful alliances. It contributes to the ongoing debate about which factors have most impact on strategic alliance outcomes, and complements prior research on several dimensions. First, using selected interview quotations to illuminate the quantitative analysis, it contributes to a deeper understanding of the alliance process, and reduced the ambiguity about which factors are most influential. In particular, the study provides support for those authors who have argued for the relative importance of the alliance implementation process. Second, support has also been found for the prominence of learning capability and the inter‐partner learning process as a major component of effective alliance implementation. Third, the results are based on the views of practicing alliance managers, which addresses a recognized gap in the literature.

Practical implications

The results send a signal to senior managers contemplating strategic alliances that they should not underestimate the importance of alliance process factors and the role that alliance managers play in achieving successful alliance relationships. This is particularly important, given the high levels of alliance failure reported in the extant literature.

Originality/value

While past research on strategic alliances has placed more emphasis on the importance of alliance formation than on implementation, there is an ongoing debate about whether structural, formation factors have more influence on alliance success than implementation or process factors. There has been only limited empirical work examining this interplay between structure and process, particularly from an operations perspective, and very few studies have examined strategic alliances in the software industry.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the contributions of successful TPM initiatives to competitive manufacturing. It also seeks to critically examine implications of strategic TPM implementation initiatives in Indian manufacturing organizations.

Design/methodology/approach

A reasonably large number of manufacturing organizations with successful experience of TPM initiatives have been surveyed to assess the contributions of strategic TPM practices to accruing manufacturing competencies. The study involves working out the correlations between various TPM success factors and manufacturing competencies for extracting contributions of significant factors towards realization of manufacturing competencies.

Findings

It was found that mere adoption of TPM initiatives does not lead organizations to garner strategic manufacturing competencies. The study highlights that holistic TPM initiatives have a significant impact on the realization of strategic manufacturing competencies in organizations. These interrelationships can be used to understand the effect of various TPM success factors on the realization of an organization's objectives of growth and sustainability.

Research limitations/implications

The study has been conducted to develop an understanding of contributions of TPM initiatives towards building manufacturing competencies in the Indian manufacturing industry. The study investigates manufacturing performance achievements accrued through strategic TPM success factors in the Indian manufacturing industry.

Practical implications

The study identifies the impact of key TPM success factors on organizational performance and highlights the need for successfully managing TPM programmes for establishing sustained maintenance improvement initiatives.

Originality/value

The paper stresses the need for strategically managing TPM programmes successfully in organizations in order to realize the true potential of TPM practices for meeting global competition.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify a comprehensive set of potential determinants influencing the successful implementation of world class manufacturing (WCM) in a less‐developed country environment on the basis of a research conducted among manufacturing firms in Egypt.

Design/methodology/approach

Data for this paper are collected using a self‐administrated questionnaire that is distributed to 200 Egyptian manufacturing firms. Of the 200 questionnaires posted, a total of 96 questionnaires are returned and used for the analysis. The respondents express their opinions concerning the importance of subsequent factors for implementation success and about the factors' presence in their manufacturing firms. Moreover, the impact of the factors on the implementation success is examined.

Findings

The challenge for the Egyptian manufacturers today is to advance their manufacturing activities. To address this challenge the Egyptian manufacturing firms need to understand what are the factors that play critical role in utilising the WCM techniques and their implications on business strategic objective to compete successfully in the global arena. This paper discusses the above issues and proposes seven critical factors classified into two categories and validated empirically through a sample of 96 companies being surveyed in Egypt. The results clearly demonstrate that WCM strategic and tactical success factors have catalytic influence on WCM success.

Research limitations/implications

There is a need to empirically test and refine the proposed factors, and to explore relationships among the various variables by collecting data from organisations that have already implemented WCM.

Practical implications

The research outcomes are useful for professionals who lead WCM implementation and those who make decisions for the first time on WCM implementation. The results can be used by practitioners while managing the project and handling people's attitudes.

Originality/value

This paper proves the influence of particular factors on the success of WCM implementation in certain circumstances, thus giving insight into the genuine mechanisms determining WCM implementation outcome.

Abstract

In 2010 a series of case studies were conducted in Prague, Czech Republic, examining the implementation and management of digital governance. These best practice case studies were chosen from among Prague's twenty-two administrative districts and through those findings this article discusses critical success factors and barriers to successful implementation of digital government initiatives. A qualitative review of both critical success factors and barriers is discussed at the individual, organizational, and strategic levels and the paper concludes by highlighting strategies managers can take to increase e-government performance. When considered together, the critical success factors, barriers to implementation, and key factors identified in the case studies further add to the growing literature of digital governance and performance management.

Abstract

Purpose

This study deals with the results of an investigation to recognize and prioritize key and critical success factors to achieve predetermined goals in strategic plans of SAIPA Press Co., producer of Automobile parts.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, Sirus and Moghaddam model, 2007, is used to identify critical success factors. also, a descriptive statistical method is used to analyze population data, and Friedman method to answer the questions

Findings

Recognition the 24 key success factors, priority of them, being as the critical success factors or core competencies are the results of this research.

Practical implications

Key success factors determine those performance fields that manager should notice permanently. These factors have most importance in executing this strategy

Originality/value

Key factors concepts for success is not a new revolution in occupation. These concepts were suggested by Ronald Daniel in 1960s. But nowadays, these concepts and approaches become more powerful. The most successful organizations in new millennium are those that from one hand have brilliant strategic views and from the other hand have guidelines and tactics to achieve success Key success goals and factors are both necessary to conduct organization to its mission. Key success factors make goals powerful directly and make mission powerful indirectly.

Abstract

With the current trend toward globalisation and the increasing competitive and technological challenges of today's environment the formation of international strategic alliances has become an important part of many firm's international business strategies. Experience with international strategic alliances has shown that they face a number of problems, which can often result in the termination of the alliance. This study, therefore, aims to assess the impact of both behavioural and organisational characteristics on the success of international strategic alliances. The results show that behavioural characteristics play a more significant role in explaining overall alliance performance compared to organisational characteristics. High levels of commitment, trust, coordination, interdependence and communication are found to be good predictors of international strategic alliance success. Conflict, meanwhile, is found to hamper good performance. By contrast organisational characteristics such as structure and control mechanisms are found not to strongly influence the success of international strategic alliances.

Abstract

Purpose

The formation of alliances between organisations is increasingly common, allowing firms to discover and ensure competitive advantages. This research paper aims to make a critical analysis of studies to understand the role of communication between partners in the process of strategic alliances.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review was carried out, using the Web of Science database to obtain data, associating the terms “communication” and “strategic alliances”, which resulted in 240 scientific articles (published between 1993 and March 2021). After data treatment using VOSviewer software and reading of the contents, the final sample consisted of 179 articles on the subject in question.

Findings

The conceptual limits, exploratory descriptive analysis of the data and content analysis of research methods are presented, with five clusters being identified. The results show growing academic interest in studying communication associated with strategic alliances, and authors’ main interest lies in understanding the critical success factors and the relation between communication and knowledge.

Practical implications

This study corroborates understanding of the future of alliances, assuming that learning is the main objective; trust is the factor determining success or failure; technology is the aggregating tool; culture affects the relation; and communication is not an end but a means to construct consolidated, long-lasting and high-performing strategic alliances.

Originality/value

This study is innovative in strategic alliances area. The research confirms that the main factor in forming alliances, in both emerging and international markets, is the learning intention. This fact reinforces the relevance of the learning made possible by this transfer of know-how through communication. In addition, this study gives critical understanding of how the process of communication between partners in an alliance must be distinct; i.e. it must be flexible enough to adjust to the stage in the alliance’s life cycle.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to identify and examine the importance of the key success factors (KSFs) of strategic sourcing, and investigate the relationship between KSFs and sourcing performance in the Hong Kong toy industry. The KSFs are ranked, and the results show those factors that should be given the highest priority in implementing strategic sourcing.

Design/methodology/approach

A literature review, a questionnaire survey, interviews with industry experts and the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) approach were employed in the study. First, the KSFs were identified after a full review and evaluation of the strategic sourcing literature. A questionnaire survey of 205 companies was then conducted in the Hong Kong toy industry to verify the importance of these KSFs. Finally, 20 sourcing experts from the toy industry were interviewed and assigned pairwise comparison judgements on a proposed AHP model, which prioritised the relative importance of these KSFs for the Hong Kong toy industry.

Findings

About 14 KSFs are identified through the literature review. The survey results indicate that these 14 KSFs are important and they are positively related to sourcing performance. Moreover, the results show that there is only marginal implementation of these 14 KSFs amongst Hong Kong toy companies. With the prioritisation of the identified KSFs by the AHP approach, it is strongly suggested that the toy manufacturers assess and improve their strategic sourcing performance.

Originality/value

The paper identifies the relative importance of the 14 KSFs, which will allow manufacturers to use their limited resources to focus on the most important factors in improving their strategic sourcing practice and performance.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to determine the strategic capabilities that are related to success in five disparate Australian industries.

Design/methodology/approach

Five studies were conducted using a generative multi‐stage research approach in order to determine the capabilities that are related to success in the management consulting, advertising and IT industries, legal profession and top 500 listed companies.

Findings

There is a clear commonality of capabilities across all studies. These are quality of service, particularly customer service; good leadership and vision, which encourages innovation and creativity; selection and retention of excellent staff with good technical skills; credibility, integrity and honesty; excellent differentiated product(s) or service(s); and adaptability and flexibility. In general the capabilities were significantly related to the organisational success measures.

Research limitations/implications

The study could be extended to other Australian and international industries.

Originality/value

Organisations that develop and implement resources to be proficient in all these capabilities should achieve increased success measured by a mix of hard and soft performance indicators. Our study is differentiated because the drivers and, indeed the indicators, of success have been proffered by executives themselves (not just the literature), who were located in disparate industries. Their views are deemed important because Australia's economy emerged relatively unscathed from the global financial economy and avoided a recession.
