Abstract

By 2006, Wikipedia had achieved the type of success that only a handful of young organizations could ever dream of reaching. It had grown from almost nothing in 2001 to become one of the consistently highest ranked and most visited sites on the Internet. This success brought new problems at a scale that no organization of this type had ever before faced. Exposes students to Wikipedia's brief history, the causes of its success, and the issues it faced going forward. Two topics form the focus: The first concerns the rules and norms for submission and editing, which raise questions about the ambiguity of Wikipedia's authority and the virtual cycle that keeps the site going; The second concerns the need to alter its practices as it gains in popularity, raising questions about what any wiki site, profit-oriented or open source, must do to scale to large numbers of participants and entries. These issues arise as part of a discussion about the site's priorities going forward.

To teach the factors that shape Wikipedia and wikis in general. Students will become familiar with the internal operations of wikis, open-source programs for developing text from many users. Also to facilitate teaching about factors that shape reference sites on the Internet, dividing discussion into three sub-topics: defining what Wikipedia is and what it is not, analyzing how it works, and understanding why it generates controversy in some circles.

Because students are asked to complete a customer lifetime value analysis based on a range of financial and non-financial data, students will need at least a modest level of proficiency in dealing with a few basic financial accounting concepts.

Case overview

In Chile, a law passed in 2008 introduced a bidding process to be held every 24 months in the pension industry. The tender mechanism was introduced as part of a reform aimed at reducing the commissions charged by pension fund administrators and at making it easier for new players to enter the market. In early 2009, Daniel Ugarte wondered if it was finally the right time for his firm to enter the pension industry. Ugarte was asked by the board to help chart a direction for the firm. The winning criterion was the lowest management fee (commission) paid by the affiliates. The main focus of the case is a quantitative assignment that asks students to calculate how customer lifetime value (CLV) and customer equity (CE) would be affected by the commission offered.

The focus of the case is on the concepts of customer lifetime value (CLV) and customer equity (CE). Monitoring, measuring and maximizing CLV and CE have become a key priority for all marketers. Instructors can introduce these concepts and its key components.

The main focus of the case is a quantitative assignment that asks students to analyze the convenience for the existing five AFPs (Administradora de Fondos de Pensiones, Pension Fund Administrator) of winning the tender. The use of CLV and CE measurements is particularly relevant. Students need to estimate the impact of pricing on the CLV and CE of the existing five AFPs.

BA, MSc, MBA Courses: CE, Marketing Metrics, Pricing. The case can also be used in courses that focus on Marketing Plan, Marketing Research or Services Marketing.

Case overview

In early 2009, Valentina Vial was given the assignment to develop the pricing strategy of Alianza to enter the pension industry. The company will propose a commission fee to compete with the country's existing five AFPs. Whichever AFP presents the lowest commission will be awarded the tender. When there are several competitors, the company must guess each competitor's likely pricing decision. In the analysis of the convenience for the existing five AFPs of winning the tender, the use of CLV and CE measurements is particularly relevant. Valentina Vial needed to estimate the impact of pricing on the CLV and CE of the existing five AFPs.

Expected learning outcomes

Understand the concepts of CLV and CE and the importance of maximizing a customer's lifetime value for the firm by calculating the CLV and the CE based on a combination of financial and non-financial data.

Illustrate the importance of adopting a long-term strategic perspective (using CLV and CE) in choosing a pricing strategy. Once a firm commits to a pricing strategy, it is difficult to shift course. Given this, the choice of pricing levels should be informed by long-term strategic thinking, including consideration of potential competitive pricing decisions.

Synopsis

This case explores the concept of crowdfunding by examining the background of the fundraising model in addition to the successful campaign, “Let’s Send Kids to Harvard: Vidal Scholarship Fund.” In this campaign, Brandon Stanton leveraged the large following of his photo blog, “Humans of New York,” to raise more than one million dollars for students in an inner-city middle school. The fundraiser received national attention and broke the record for the most contributors to a single campaign on the popular crowdfunding website, Indiegogo. Students are encouraged to think critically about what elements work together to create a successful crowdfunding campaign.

Research methodology

Secondary data were reviewed to provide a thorough review of the history of crowdfunding as well as to chronicle the events that led up to the successful crowdfunding campaign highlighted in the case study.

This case is appropriate for university marketing, social media, public relations, and entrepreneurship courses. This case has a difficulty level appropriate for sophomore-, junior-, or senior-level courses.

In 2009 Wikia was the Internet's largest for-profit provider of hosted open-source wikis, with over a million daily users. After five years of existence, the organization had supported a wide range of exploratory activities, experiencing both success and failure. With approximately $3 million of cash on hand, Wikia turned cash flow positive in 2009, with revenues of approximately $4.5 million, affording it time and flexibility to try new things. Some of the company's employees and investors suggested that Wikia should attempt to expand and market itself more aggressively, but which strategic direction should receive priority? The case presents many of the issues and tradeoffs facing CEO Gil Penchina as he formulates these priorities.

The case seeks to teach students about the general business challenges facing a new firm in the area of Web 2.0, also popularly known as social networking. The case also exposes students to wiki technology and how it facilitates collaborative behavior.

Spiegel Online (www.spiegel.de) is the leading news Web site in Germany. The site was first designed to accompany Der Spiegel, one of Europe's largest and Germany's most influential weekly magazine, which has a weekly circulation of around one million. The site's content is produced by a team of more than fifty journalists writing in several categories: politics, business, networld, panorama, arts and entertainment, science, university, school, sports, travel, weather, and automobiles. The original content is complemented by articles purchased from news agencies and selected articles from the print edition. Spiegel-Verlag is a major contributor to the Hamburg Media School, which offers professional master's degree programs in Media Management (MBA), film, and journalism. In their second year, MBA students typically engage in consulting projects with major media companies. In a recent assignment, Spiegel Online posed two questions to the MBA team: are there any chances for an economically successful entry into the market for interactive classifieds? And if so, what should the business model look like in detail? A student team analyzed markets for classified ads and found one market segment that appeared to be particularly promising: the market for art objects. During the development of a business plan for a new venture in this market it became apparent that there is much uncertainty about the key input parameters to the business plan. As a result, it is very difficult to assess the viability of the business idea. How can the team properly account for the uncertain input parameters? What is the impact of this uncertainty on the bottom line? Will a Web site for art objects earn or lose money? How can the team communicate this uncertainty to a group of high-level decision makers who want a simple “go or no-go” recommendation?

The objective is to make students aware of the applicability of Monte Carlo simulation to the analysis of complex business plans. Students should learn how to explicitly account for uncertain inputs in a business plan, how to assess the impact of uncertainty on the bottom line via Monte Carlo simulation, and how to communicate the results of their analysis to high-level decision makers.

This case describes the role played by the company in linking various processes and taking the lead in the development of a unique “circular” flow of recycling activity which includes recovery, reuse and recycling schemes. Traditionally businesses were not held responsible for the product after use by the consumer. But, with growing stakeholder expectations in the area of corporate social responsibility and sustainability, businesses are more conscious about managing their social and environmental impacts. Today businesses are beginning to look at reverse logistics not only in terms of economic impacts but also environmental impacts. While consumers and other stakeholders want businesses to be more responsible in the way the product is produced such as to minimize waste production, the expectations have also changed to recovery of products after use in order to reduce cost and environmental impact of recycling. Businesses are becoming more responsible about collecting, reusing, refurbishing or dismantling used products to minimize environmental damage.

Expected learning outcomes

The case is significant for teachers and students of “environment management”, corporate social responsibility, “supply chain” and “the importance of networks”. It can be used to understand how reverse logistics helps to minimize waste.

This case attempts to study one of the key problems faced by a multinational organisation in the globalised environment that exists today: whether to outsource or insource. Outsourcing deals with getting into a contract with an outside vendor/supplier (local to the region in question) to deliver services to the parent company as per the agreed deliverables. On the other hand, insourcing deals with setting up operations in the destination country and hiring local staff on behalf of the company to do the same tasks.

Historically, outsourcing has been considered a better choice because of several benefits such as the ease of setting up operations, a predictable costing model and reduced capital investment. However, it comes with its own set of disadvantages as well, including a high attrition rate and a sub-standard level of quality in the deliverables. Apart from the quantifiable parameters, there are several qualitative parameters as well, which encompasses the employees' passion/commitment towards the company, sense of achievement and performance management process.

This case considers an existing situation in First Telecom (henceforth, referred as FT), where they have outsourced one part of their operations to multiple providers in India and are now facing huge issues with the quality of the deliverables; as a result, FT are now looking to explore if an insourced solution would be more cost-effective and productive. It evaluates the two models against various parameters and makes a recommendation on the preferred model.

Study level/applicability

This case can be used as a teaching tool in the following courses: MBA/postgraduate programme in strategic decision-making; MBA/postgraduate programme in management in management accounting and management control systems; and executive training programme for middle- and senior-level employees to look at the various factors involved (in addition to cost) that should be taken into account while comparing outsourcing versus insourcing.

Case overview

FT is a communication service provider and has presence in more than 170 countries around the world. The company is considered among the top three telecom companies around the globe and offers solutions to multinational customers in the areas of networks, IP telephony, security services and other managed services.

The company has more than 100,000 employees around the globe. In addition to the regular (on rolls) employees, the company also outsources a lot of its operations in various countries to local service providers. The services that this company outsources include software/tools development, solution pricing and in-life service management. Historically, the company has believed that outsourcing is a better alternative because of the ease of setting up operations and lower cost.

However, because of the recent changes in the global market, there is a huge pressure within the company to reconsider all the functions and find ways to contain costs to help the company's bottom line.

There have been numerous complaints about the quality of output from one of the outsourced functions, namely, the “Pricing Team”, which is being presently outsourced to two service providers in India. The lack of accuracy has cost the company a key opportunity valued at more than USD5 million and the COO is furious at this loss. He has tasked the head of business improvement to do a full review of the function and look at the possible alternatives the company can explore to avoid these issues in future.

FT now wants to do a cost-comparison analysis of the existing set-up with a new insourced set-up considering all costs that would come into play. This would help FT to decide the future course of action to ensure reduced costs and enhanced operational efficiency from the process.

Understanding of cost-comparison parameters involved as an effective tool for strategy development and achieving organisational objectives; understanding of SWOT analysis (organisation level and decision level) and its applicability in the organisation context; understanding the Porter's five competitive forces model to illustrate the effect of environment on an organisation; and understanding of outsourcing and insourcing models and the pros and cons of each model, which is a key management decision in most multinational organisations.

Social implications

For nearly two decades, India as a country has grown considerably and one of the key contributors in that growth has been “Business Process Outsourcing” from all across the world to India. While the outsourcing wave has provided the initial push to the economy of India, it would not be able to help sustain the momentum primarily because of two reasons: the first is the growth of other countries, such as Hungary, the Philippines and China, as alternatives for outsourcing (and equally may be more cost-effective at times); and the second reason is the shift in various companies towards an insourcing model for critical functions.

Therefore, as a country, India needs to move ahead and, instead of only focusing on providing resources to do the tasks outsourced by global companies, focus should now shift to promoting innovation and creativity among the workforce. A lot of companies nowadays are realising the importance of product innovation and are investing huge amounts in R&D to come up with breakthrough technologies that can help them create a sustainable development model. However, this should in no way be considered an end of the outsourcing era. Although there needs to be an effort towards improving the interlock process, outsourcing is here to stay because of the benefits it brings.

This case was designed not only for MBA and executive education but also undergraduate courses in human resources (HR), leadership development, HR metrics and change management. It is ideal for introducing the concepts of diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I), the balanced scorecard and talent retention.

Subject area

The case deals with initiating and integrating DE&I programs into a company. It highlights how and when to start, change management issues during roll-out and convincing senior leadership why a program such as the one the protagonist started adds value to an organization.

Case Overview

In early 2018, Kate McKinnon, AVP of HR for CareerStaff Unlimited (CSU), a temporary staffing company and division of Genesis HealthCare, reflected on the late 2016 decision to develop women for leadership roles at the company. With a rather unconventional implementation of the Women’s Leadership Group (WLG), Kate successfully developed fifteen female individual contributors, many of whom were promoted to leadership roles by early 2018. Kate was concerned about maintaining the momentum necessary to continue (and expand) the program of identifying, developing, promoting, and retaining women and other diverse employees across the company. She also wanted to measure a clear correlation between the WLG and CSU’s financial and customer outcomes. It was time to plan phase two of the program, including further improvement of the DE&I efforts at CSU.

Expected learning outcomes

The learning outcome of this paper are as follows: focused programs, led by courageous and committed leaders, improve gender equity. DE&I is a business imperative, as much as a legal/risk challenge. To be understood, approved and communicated, HR Initiatives must add value and be aligned with the company strategy along with financial and customer outcomes.
