Abstract

Purpose

Even though austenitic stainless steels have been extensively used in industries, owing to some of the characteristics of the material, its performance in machining is difficult to understand, in particular at high cutting speeds. There is no availability of dependable and in-depth studies pertinent to this matter. In this work, performance of AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel was studied in terms of surface roughness (Ra) and material removal rate (MRR) at high cutting speeds. Subsequently, parametric optimization and prediction for responses were carried out.

Design/methodology/approach

Turning operations were conducted using L9 orthogonal array and the outcomes were analyzed to attain optimal set of machining parameters for the responses using signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio and Pareto analysis of variance (ANOVA). In the present work, the cutting speed values were considered beyond the recommended range as designated by tool manufacturers. Finally, multiple regression models were developed to predict responses.

Findings

From the results, 350 m/min was found to be a significant speed. The investigation reveals that even though the speeds are taken beyond the recommended values, the results are favorable. The optimal machining parameters values for surface quality obtained were cutting speed of 350 m/min, feed of 0.15 mm/rev and depth of cut of 2.0 mm. In case of MRR, the optimal values were: cutting speed of 400 m/min, feed of 0.25 mm/rev and depth of cut of 2.0 mm. It was found out that there was an improvement in Ra and MRR (around 15 and 4%) due to optimization. The results indicate that Pareto ANOVA is easier than S/N ratio. This revealed that the feed rate and depth of cut were mostly affected parameters for Ra and MRR. The developed models are capable of predicting the responses accurately.

Practical implications

The outcome of the work reveals that even though the speeds were taken beyond the recommended value, the results are favorable for manufacturing industries when the tool cost is considered insignificant.

Originality/value

No work was reported on machining of the chosen material beyond the recommended cutting speed. Moreover, it was observed from the past works that cutting speeds were limited to 100–300 m/min.

Abstract

With the increasing number of universities in the country, research on urban form and architecture—with a focus on historic settlements—has accelerated in Cyprus in the last fifteen years. Lefke, a small traditional medieval town located on north-west Cyprus, warrants a detailed urban morphological study, as its traditional urban pattern has been shaped by a medieval character. Within its overall organic urban pattern, there are well-scaled narrow streets, a number of public buildings and irregularly shaped public spaces at the intersection of streets and/or in front of public buildings. Lefke's morphological characteristics, which have developed throughout many years, have been significantly impacted by British influences, as the Cyprus Mines Corporation (CMC), established in 1916, turned Lefke into an industrial town. The CMC district, which is the first industrial mass housing district in Cyprus, has uniquely impacted Lefke's urban patterns and still defines the morphological characteristics of the town today. Accordingly, this paper first explores urban morphology based on two pioneering morphological studies: Gianfranco Cannigia's theories of typo-morphological understanding, and the evolutionary insights of M.R.G. Conzen. The ultimate goal is to set up a typo-morphological basis for the CMC industrial mass housing district, which will drive future interventions, design and planning policies towards its conservation and sustainability.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to develope a novel fractional hybrid impedance control (FHIC) approach for high-sensitive contact stress force tracking control of the series elastic muscle-tendon actuator (SEM-TA) in uncertain environments.

Design/methodology/approach

In three different cases, the fractional parameters of the FHIC were optimized with the particle swarm optimization algorithm. Its adaptability to the pressure of the sole of the foot on real environments such as grass (soft), carpet (medium) and solid floors (hard) is far superior to traditional impedance control. The main aim of this paper is to derive the dynamic simulation models of the SEM-TA, to develop a control architecture allowing for high-sensitive contact stress force control in three cases and to verify the simulation models and the proposed controller with experimental results. The performance of the optimized controllers was evaluated according to these parameters, namely, maximum overshoot, steady-state error, settling time and root mean squared errors of the positions. Moreover, the frequency robustness analysis of the controllers was made in three cases.

Findings

Different simulations and experimental results were conducted to verify the control performance of the controllers. According to the comparative results of the performance, the responses of the proposed controller in simulation and experimental works are very similar.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to address a fractional order fuzzy PID (FOFPID) control approach for solving the problem of enhancing high precision tracking performance and robustness against to different reference trajectories of a 6-DOF Stewart Platform (SP) in joint space.

Design/methodology/approach

For the optimal design of the proposed control approach, tuning of the controller parameters including membership functions and input-output scaling factors along with the fractional order rate of error and fractional order integral of control signal is tuned with off-line by using particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. For achieving this off-line optimization in the simulation environment, very accurate dynamic model of SP which has more complicated dynamical characteristics is required. Therefore, the coupling dynamic model of multi-rigid-body system is developed by Lagrange-Euler approach. For completeness, the mathematical model of the actuators is established and integrated with the dynamic model of SP mechanical system to state electromechanical coupling dynamic model. To study the validness of the proposed FOFPID controller, using this accurate dynamic model of the SP, other published control approaches such as the PID control, FOPID control and fuzzy PID control are also optimized with PSO in simulation environment. To compare trajectory tracking performance and effectiveness of the tuned controllers, the real time validation trajectory tracking experiments are conducted using the experimental setup of the SP by applying the optimum parameters of the controllers. The credibility of the results obtained with the controllers tuned in simulation environment is examined using statistical analysis.

Findings

The experimental results clearly demonstrate that the proposed optimal FOFPID controller can improve the control performance and reduce reference trajectory tracking errors of the SP. Also, the proposed PSO optimized FOFPID control strategy outperforms other control schemes in terms of the different difficulty levels of the given trajectories.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, such a motion controller incorporating the fractional order approach to the fuzzy is first time applied in trajectory tracking control of SP.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship of the organization and whether employees in the companies operating in the textile sector receive leadership support when they experience depression.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were obtained from personnel working in textile companies in organized industrial zones located within five provinces: Istanbul, Ankara, Bursa, Izmir and Antalya (defined as industrial cities of Turkey). The reason for choosing these companies was related to the question of whether the mental state of the personnel may have had an impact on the success of the company, especially as the textile industry works with more manpower and knowledge due to the nature of the job. The moderation relationship of leadership support to the relationship of this situation on organizational culture and organizational commitment was analyzed using the SmartPLS program.

Findings

As a result of the analyzes, it was determined that the depression of the employees weakens the organizational commitment, thereby leading to a negative relationship within the organizational culture. But, with leadership support, the organizational commitment increases and the organizational culture is positively affected.

Research limitations/implications

As the research was conducted in companies in the textile sector in Istanbul, this limitation should be taken into account in future research. In addition, as data is collected from white-collar employees in the administrative staff position (the sample group), this situation should also be taken into account. Considering the questions asked in the questionnaire, it is recommended that future research be conducted on blue-collar workers.

Practical implications

It can be concluded that the leadership role is an important factor for organizations to prevent employees from being depressed and employees should receive positive support to ensure organizational commitment. At the same time, it can be concluded that the organizational culture is positively affected if the depression of the employees has decreased.

Originality/value

The research is an original study in terms of investigating the relationship of depression status to the leadership support of employees working in textile companies in an environment where competition is consistently intense.

Abstract

Purpose

Recent concern about governmental hospital performance has intensified interest in the working conditions of doctors. In North Cyprus, there are several problems related with the functioning and performance of hospitals, such as lack of patient satisfaction, long waiting times for treatment, and dissatisfaction from doctors. In analyzing the reasons for such problems and proposing solutions, components of the hospital system, namely, the doctors and the patients and other health personnel, are considered to be important. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the satisfaction and importance levels of doctors from their working conditions and environment which are key determinants of patient satisfaction.

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire consisting of two main sections was constructed. The first section included personal information and the second section consisted of perceptional questions about importance and satisfaction levels related to the working conditions of doctors. The sample population of this paper was composed of governmental and private hospital doctors working in North Cyprus.

Findings

All the aspects of working conditions of the governmental and private hospital doctors are found to be crucial for them. In general, majority of the governmental hospital doctors are unsatisfied with the aspects of working conditions; whereas, the satisfaction levels of private hospital are higher than that of governmental hospital doctors.

Originality/value

This paper is planned to be a valuable scientific contribution to the actions of the Ministry of Health in North Cyprus for the improvement of the working conditions of doctors which would in turn lead to greater patient satisfaction.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of empowering leadership in intraorganizational knowledge management practices and to reveal how followers' acceptance and use of the hotel management system affect this role.

Design/methodology/approach

A serial multiple mediation model was evaluated and tested using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The database was created from the results of a structured questionnaire obtained from 401 employees working in hotels in Turkey.

Findings

The findings of the study reveal that empowering leadership has a significant effect on followers' knowledge creation, sharing and application. It was also found that the acceptance and use of the hotel management system were partially complementary to the impact of empowering leadership on followers' knowledge management practices.

Practical implications

This paper gives an insight into the empowering leader's role in gathering useful knowledge, which is self-managed within the organization, by encouraging, motivating, providing autonomous and supportive conditions and making it beneficial and easier for their followers to adapt to the organization's technologies.

Originality/value

The efficient management of knowledge in organizations through the use of technology is possible by distributing power to subordinates through expanding the theory of knowledge management, leadership and the acceptance and use of technology. Furthermore, this study contributes to the literature by establishing the theoretical foundation of the relationship between empowering leadership and knowledge management practices based on Dalkir's knowledge management model and by discussing the mediating effect of the core variables of the UTAUT model.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between supplier orientation, which is Porter's general competitive strategy, and the market and financial performance in the Turkish Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) sector, taking into account the problems in the supply chain during the pandemic process.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used a quantitative research design where 550 questionnaires were collected from respondents operating in various ICT companies in Turkey to obtain necessary data to test the hypotheses developed for the study. Mediation effect and path analysis were used to analyze the research data. Smart PLS 3.3 version was used for all the mentioned analyzes.

Findings

The results of the analysis revealed that supplier orientation was positively and significantly related to financial and market performance. The findings of this study also showed that Porter’s generic competitive strategies have a mediator role in the relations of supplier orientation, financial and market performance.

Practical implications

These findings contribute to the understanding of the importance of supplier orientation along with competitive strategies to increase market and financial performance in ICT companies, especially during the pandemic process. These findings provide recommendations for researchers, professionals and senior and supply chain managers to apply at their firms.

Originality/value

This is a study that adequately covers the relationship between supplier orientation, general competitive strategies and market and financial performance in the Turkish ICT sector, taking into account the pandemic process.

Abstract

Purpose

Companies must implement sustainability measures in order to survive due to the relationship between financial, social and environmental performances. These elements must be integrated into the business in a complementary manner in this regard. As a result, this study aims to investigate the effects of entrepreneurial leadership on sustainability, as well as financial and process innovation.

Design/methodology/approach

Within the scope of the research, a survey was conducted with 295 white-collar employees working in energy companies. SPSS 25, the LISREL program, and SOBEL analysis were used to determine the relationships between the variables.

Findings

In the research, financial innovation perceptions and process innovation activities have a positive effect on business sustainability and entrepreneurial leadership. As both an independent and a mediating variable, entrepreneurial leadership has a positive impact on business sustainability.

Research limitations/implications

Companies engaged in renewable energy production, operating in the Marmara region, constitute the sample mass. For this reason, it would be more accurate to evaluate the results obtained in this research only for companies producing renewable energy.

Practical implications

It is concluded that energy companies should prioritize financial and process innovations and that entrepreneurial leadership is required to ensure the sector's long-term viability.

Originality/value

This paper is an innovative study in terms of the scope and content of the research as data are collected and analyzed from companies that produce renewable energy.

Abstract

Purpose

Banks are fiercely competitive among themselves, focused on satisfying and retaining customers through the extensive use of technology for service innovation and delivery. In this context, the study aims to understand the impact of customer relationship management (CRM) and innovation capability, including strategy and technology elements, on customer satisfaction and the financial performance of banks.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample population of the study consists of bank employees. Analyzes were made using the SMARTPLS program, and within the scope of the study, data were collected from 272 bank employees.

Findings

As a result of the analyzes, it can be explained that the innovation capability coupled with the CRM strategy and related technology have positive effects on both financial performance and customer satisfaction.

Research limitations/implications

The research was conducted in banks that have an important position in the service sector. In terms of location, the data was collected in Istanbul because the headquarters are in Istanbul. Therefore, these limitations should be taken into account in future studies.

Originality/value

The research is quite new and up-to-date in terms of examining CRM from a strategic and technological point of view, as well as examining innovation competency.
