Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to improve the degradation efficiency of Rhodamine B (RhB) by new photocatalytic materials.

Design/methodology/approach

Binary Z-scheme g-C3N4/Bi2WO6 photocatalytic material was synthesized by the one-step hydrothermal reaction. The construction of Z-scheme heterojunction led to the rapid separation of photogenerated electrons and holes, which would degrade RhB into small molecular substances to achieve the purpose of degradation.

Findings

It was found that Bi2WO6/25%g-C3N4 displayed the highest photocatalytic activity, which was about 1.44 and 1.34 times higher than that of pure Bi2WO6 and g-C3N4, respectively. According to the trapping experiments, the superoxide radical (·O2−) was the major active species of the RhB decomposition in Bi2WO6/g-C3N4 catalysts.

Originality/value

The successful synthesis of Z-scheme Bi2WO6/g-C3N4 provides new ideas and references for the design of catalysts with high photocatalytic activity, which should have wide applications in the future.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to improve the computational efficiency and to achieve high-order accuracy for the computation of helicopter rotor unsteady flows in forward flight during the industrial preliminary design stage.

Design/methodology/approach

The integral arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian form of unsteady compressible Navier–Stokes equations with low Mach number preconditioned pseudo time terms based on non-inertial frame of reference undergoing rotating and translating was derived and discretized in the framework of multi-block structured finite volume grid using three types of spatial reconstruction schemes, i.e. the third-order accurate monotonic upwind scheme for conservation laws, the fifth-order accurate weighted essentially non-oscillatory and the fifth-order accurate weighted compact nonlinear schemes.

Findings

The results show that the present non-inertial computational method can obtain comparable results with other methods, such as the dynamic overset method, and make sure that the higher-order spatial schemes can significantly improve the tip vortex resolution.

Originality/value

The computational grid used by the present method remained static during the whole unsteady computation process, with only local deformations induced by blade cyclic pitch and other operating motions, which greatly reduced the complexity of grid motion and enhanced the efficiency and robustness.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to synthesize 6-ethyl-4-hydroxyquinolin-2(1H)-one as a new enol-type coupling component in the preparation of some 3-arylazo-4-hydroxyquinolin-2(1H)-one dyes and evaluate the solvent effects on their absorption in ultraviolet-visible spectra.

Design/methodology/approach

6-Ethyl-4-hydroxyquinolin-2(1H)-one was synthesized by thermal cyclocondensation reaction of N, N′-bis(4-ethylphenyl) malonamide at 130–140°C in polyphosphoric acid. This compound was then applied in the azo-coupling reaction with some aniline-based diazonium salts, so as to prepare seven new mono-heterocyclic azo dyes. The structures of the compounds were confirmed using mass spectroscopic technique. Fourier transform infra red (FT-IR) and 1H proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (13 C NMR) studies on the structure of the azo compounds revealed that they exist as two E- and Z-isomers of hydrazone tautomer both in solid and solution state. The effects of acid and base on the visible absorption spectra of the dyes were also evaluated and discussed.

Findings

Ultra violet-visible UV-vis absorption spectra of the dyes didn’t show significant variation by changing of solvents because of intramolecular H-bonding between proposed hydrazone forms and 2- and 4-keto functions in their structures. The spectra of the dyes were not sensitive to the addition of acid but were very sensitive to base.

Originality/value

The synthesized 3-arylazo-4-hydroxyquinolin-2(1H)-one dyes are new members in the 4-hydroxyquinolin-2(1H)-one azo dyes family, where very few details regarding the synthesis of such dyes are reported before in the literature. They are unique in terms of synthesis and spectral properties.

Abstract

Developments within the British regional library system in the year April 1975 to March 1976 are reviewed. A scheme for the collection of statistics has been tested under the auspices of the National Committee on Regional Library Co‐operation. Several regions have been converting parts of their union catalogues retrospectively into machine‐readable form. Local transport schemes for interlibrary loans are much in evidence, one of the most significant being a pilot project which links libraries in the North West with the BLLD. Subject specialisation schemes continue in the South West, Wales and the South East. Investigation into the West Midlands Service and into the use made of the General Pool Stock (GPS) at Wakefield (formerly the Central Reserve Stock of the West Riding County Library) are discussed, and several projects being carried out by LASER with a view to increasing availability of material in the South East are mentioned. The statistical table shows that compared with 1974/75 internal use of the regions dropped slightly but that use from outside (much of it by the BLLD) increased substantially.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to report the development and experimental evaluation of two kinds of PANI@semiconductor based photocathodic anti-corrosion coating, for application on stainless steel substrates.

Design/methodology/approach

PANI was in situ chemical polymerized on TiO2 and BiVO4 particles, and FT-IR and SEM/EDS were used to understand the characteristics and elemental distribution of the composite particles. Composite coatings, which consisted of epoxy, PANI@TiO2 or PANI@BiVO4 and graphene, were prepared on the 304L stainless steel. Photoelectrochemical response measurement, electrochemical tests and immersion tests were used to assess the anti-corrosion performance of the prepared coatings in 45°C 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. And the corrosion protection mechanism was further explained by combining with surface observation.

Findings

The photoelectrochemical response tests revealed the good photocathodic effect of the coatings, and the reversible oxidation-reduction properties of PANI (pseudocapacitive effect) leading to the repeated usage of the coatings. Consequently, the anti-corrosion mechanism of the composite coating is attributed to the physical barrier effect of the coating, the anodic protection effect of PANI and the photocathodic and energy store effect.

Originality/value

These kind coatings could prevent corrosion from day to night for stainless steel, which has great engineering application prospects on stainless steel corrosion protection.

Abstract

The 2030 United Nations Agenda has framed Sustainable Development Goal 9 around eight targets outlined in Resolution A/RES/71/313 (U.N. General Assembly, 2017). The purpose of this chapter is that the lectors, without much previous knowledge on SDG9, understand the fundamental concepts involved in each of the eight targets. Multiple discussion points emerge when reflecting on the nature of these concepts and others emerge when reflecting on them in the industry settings. The first section of this chapter covers issues concerning resilient infrastructure. Resilient infrastructure is related to targets 9.1, 9.4, and 9.a. This concept needs to cope with extreme natural events potentially associated with global warming and climate change. The second section focusses on the importance of technological innovation in the context of targets 9.5 and 9.b. In a business domain, innovation allows to strengthen industrial competitiveness and increases corporate sustainability. The third concept covered in this chapter is the Information and Communication Technology that is a key to understand target 9.c. Last but not the least, two essential ideas are discussed: Inclusive and sustainable industrialisation and financial services, which are fundamental elements in target 9.2 and target 9.3. In a certain way, it is possible to conclude that both concepts integrate all previous conceptions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to expose computational methods as applied to engineering systems and evolutionary processes with randomness in external actions and inherent parameters.

Design/methodology/approach

In total, two approaches are distinguished that rely on solvers from deterministic algorithms. Probabilistic analysis is referred to as the approximation of the response by a Taylor series expansion about the mean input. Alternatively, stochastic simulation implies random sampling of the input and statistical evaluation of the output.

Findings

Beyond the characterization of random response, methods of reliability assessment are discussed. Concepts of design improvement are presented. Optimization for robustness diminishes the sensitivity of the system to fluctuating parameters.

Practical implications

Deterministic algorithms available for the primary problem are utilized for stochastic analysis by statistical Monte Carlo sampling. The computational effort for the repeated solution of the primary problem depends on the variability of the system and is usually high. Alternatively, the analytic Taylor series expansion requires extension of the primary solver to the computation of derivatives of the response with respect to the random input. The method is restricted to the computation of output mean values and variances/covariances, with the effort determined by the amount of the random input. The results of the two methods are comparable within the domain of applicability.

Originality/value

The present account addresses the main issues related to the presence of randomness in engineering systems and processes. They comprise the analysis of stochastic systems, reliability, design improvement, optimization and robustness against randomness of the data. The analytical Taylor approach is contrasted to the statistical Monte Carlo sampling throughout. In both cases, algorithms known from the primary, deterministic problem are the starting point of stochastic treatment. The reader benefits from the comprehensive presentation of the matter in a concise manner.

Abstract

Purpose

Crack tip stresses are used to relate the ability of structures to perform under the influence of cracks and defects. One of the methods to determine three-dimensional crack tip stresses is through the J-Tz method. The J-Tz method has been used extensively to characterize the stresses of cracked geometries that demonstrate positive T-stress but limited in characterizing negative T-stresses. The purpose of this paper is to apply the J-Tz method to characterize a three-dimensional crack tip stress field in a changing crack length from positive to negative T-stress geometries.

Design/methodology/approach

Elastic-plastic crack border fields of deep and shallow cracks in tension and bending loads were investigated through a series of three-dimensional finite element (FE) and analytical J-Tz solutions for a range of crack lengths ranging from 0.1⩽a/W⩽0.5 for two thickness extremes of B/(Wa)=1 and 0.05.

Findings

Both the FE and the J-Tz approaches showed that the combined in-plane and the out-of-plane constraint loss were differently affected by the T-stress and the out-of-plane size effects when the crack length changed from deep to shallow cracks. The conditions of the J-Tz dominance on the three-dimensional crack front tip were shown to be limited to positive T-stress geometries, and the J-Tz-Q2D approach can extend the crack border dominance of the three-dimensional deep and shallow bend models along the crack front tip until perturbed by an elastic-plastic corner field.

Practical implications

The paper reports the limitation of the J-Tz approach, which is used to calculate the state of three-dimensional crack tip stresses in power law hardening materials. The results from this paper suggest that the characterization of the three-dimensional crack tip stress in power law hardening materials is still an open issue and requires other suitable solutions to solve the problem.

Originality/value

This paper demonstrates a thorough analysis of a three-dimensional elastic-plastic crack tip fields for geometries that are initially either fully constrained (positive T-stress) or unconstrained (negative T-stress) crack tip fields but, subsequently, the T-stress sign changes due to crack length reduction and specimen thickness increase. The J-Tz stress-based method has been tested and its dominance over the crack tip field is shown to be affected by the combined in-plane and the out-of-plane constraints and the corner field effects.

Abstract

Purpose

In this study, two postprocessing techniques, namely, conventional burnishing (CB) and ultrasonic-assisted burnishing (UAB), were applied to improve the fatigue behavior of 316 L stainless steel fabricated through selective laser melting (SLM). The effects of these processes on surface roughness, porosity, microhardness and fatigue performance were experimentally investigated. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of ultrasonic-assisted burnishing as a preferred post-processing technique for enhancing the fatigue performance of additively manufactured components.

Design/methodology/approach

All samples were subjected to a sandblasting process. Next, the samples were divided into three distinct groups. The first group (as-Built) did not undergo any additional postprocessing, apart from sandblasting. The second group was treated with CB, while the third group was treated with ultrasonic-assisted burnishing. Finally, all samples were evaluated based on their surface roughness, porosity, microhardness and fatigue performance.

Findings

The results revealed that the initial mean surface roughness (Ra) of the as-built sample was 11.438 µm. However, after undergoing CB and UAB treatments, the surface roughness decreased to 1.629 and 0.278 µm, respectively. Notably, the UAB process proved more effective in eliminating near-surface pores and improving the microhardness of the samples compared to the CB process. Furthermore, the fatigue life of the as-built sample, initially at 66,000 cycles, experienced a slight improvement after CB treatment, reaching 347,000 cycles. However, the UAB process significantly enhanced the fatigue life of the samples, extending it to 620,000 cycles.

Originality/value

After reviewing the literature, it can be concluded that UAB will exceed the capabilities of CB in terms of enhancing the surface roughness and, subsequently, the fatigue performance of additive manufactured (AM) metals. However, the actual impact of the UAB process on the fatigue life of AM products has not yet been thoroughly researched. Therefore, in this study, this paper used the burnishing process to enhance the fatigue life of 316 L stainless steel produced through the SLM process.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the morphology and physicochemical properties of BiOBr/Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) composite membranes and the differences in the properties of BiOBr/PVDF composite membranes made by adding different precursor ratios during the casting process.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, sodium bromide and Bi(NO3)3 were used as precursors for the preparation of BiOBr photocatalysts, and PVDF membranes were modified by using the phase conversion method in conjunction with the in situ deposition method to produce BiOBr/PVDF hydrophilic composite membranes with both membrane separation and photocatalytic capabilities.

Findings

The characterization results confirmed that the composites were successfully and homogeneously co-mingled in the PVDF membranes. The related performance of the composite membrane was tested, and it was found that the composite membrane with the optimal precursor incorporation ratio had good photocatalytic efficiency and antipollution ability; the removal efficiencies of methyl orange, rhodamine B and methylene blue were 80.43%, 85.02% and 86.94%, respectively, in 2.5 h. The photocatalytic efficiency of composite membranes with different precursor ratios increased and then decreased with the increase of the precursor addition ratio.

Originality/value

The composite membrane is prepared by phase conversion method with in situ deposition method, and the BiOBr material has unique advantages for the degradation of organic dyes. The comprehensive experimental data can be known that the composite membrane prepared in this paper has high degradation efficiency and good durability for organic dyes.
