Purpose
This paper aims to shed some new light on the mixed findings of previous empirical studies on the effect of knowledge search breadth (SB) on firms’ 2019 innovation performance (IP).
Design/methodology/approach
The paper adopts a contingent approach that examines the two organizational factors in determining the shape of the SB-IP curve. The empirical study is based on survey data gathered from 414 Chinese firms. In dealing with concerns on simultaneity and reverse causality, perceived time-lag between outcome variable and explanatory variables was introduced.
Findings
This study reveals that knowledge novelty and absorptive capacity are two functions underlying the SB-IP relationship. The results also indicate that innovation orientation and firm age moderate the SB-IP relationship in different ways: the more innovation-oriented the firm, the steeper the inverted U-shaped SB-IP relationship will be, while the older the firm, the flatter the SB-IP relationship will be. Interestingly, there is strong evidence for the shape-flip phenomenon of the SB-IP curve: SB has an inverted U-shaped effect on IP when a firm is young; however, SB has a U-shaped effect when the firm is older than 37 years.
Originality/value
By revealing two underlying functions and two moderators of the association between SB and IP at the firm level, this paper contributes to shed some new light to the mixed results reported by previous empirical studies that have examined the effect of knowledge search on firm innovation.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the singular Hopf bifurcation and mixed mode oscillations (MMOs) in the perturbed Bonhoeffer-van der Pol (BVP) circuit. There is a singular periodic orbit constructed by the switching between the stable focus and large amplitude relaxation cycles. Using a generalized fast/slow analysis, the authors show the generation mechanism of two distinct kinds of MMOs.
Design/methodology/approach
The parametric modulation can be used to generate complicated dynamics. The BVP circuit is constructed as an example for second-order differential equation with periodic perturbation. Then the authors draw the bifurcation parameter diagram in terms of a containing two attractive regions, i.e. the stable relaxation cycle and the stable focus. The transition mechanism and characteristic features are investigated intensively by one-fast/two-slow analysis combined with bifurcation theory.
Findings
Periodic perturbation can suppress nonlinear circuit dynamic to a singular periodic orbit. The combination of these small oscillations with the large amplitude oscillations that occur due to canard cycles yields such MMOs. The results connect the theory of the singular Hopf bifurcation enabling easier calculations of where the oscillations occur.
Originality/value
By treating the perturbation as the second slow variable, the authors obtain that the MMOs are due to the canards in a supercritical case or in a subcritical case. This study can reveal the transition mechanism for multi-time scale characteristics in perturbed circuit. The information gained from such results can be extended to periodically perturbed circuits.

Abstract
Purpose
Although collaborative research is believed to be an important means of accessing external knowledge, research on whether taking a strategic network position benefits new product development (NPD) is inconclusive. This study aims to unravel the conditions under which taking a strategic position within a collaborative research network is conducive for a firm’s NPD.
Design/methodology/approach
Drawing on social network theory, absorptive capacity theory and knowledge recombinant studies, this study examines how strategic network positions (i.e. degree centrality and structural holes) and knowledge base cohesion (i.e. local and global cohesion) in tandem affect a firm’s NPD. A panel data set of 366 firms in the Chinese automobile sector (2002–2010) is empirically analyzed, using the panel negative binomial approach with random effects and several alternate estimation approaches.
Findings
This study reveals that, rather than the volume of a firm’s knowledge base, its cohesion determines how it absorbs and uses knowledge accrued from collaborative research for NPD. Specifically, this paper finds that centrally positioned firms have greater NPD when their knowledge bases are locally cohesive, while firms spanning structural holes have more NPD when their knowledge bases are globally cohesive.
Originality/value
Successfully transferring collaborative research outcomes into product innovation is difficult. This study contributes to the literature on strategic network positions and NPD. The findings advance the understanding of knowledge base cohesion’s moderating role in explaining how firms absorb and exploit external knowledge for internal innovation. The findings also have important implications for managers who wish to promote product innovation by engaging in collaborative research with external partners.

Abstract
Purpose
This work examines the joint pricing and ordering (JPO) decisions for a loss-averse retailer with quantity-oriented reference point (RP) effect under demand uncertainty.
Design/methodology/approach
The demand is assumed to be uncertain with the mean and variance as the only known information. The prospect theory is used to model the retailer's expected utility. An expected utility maximization model in the distribution-free approach (DFA) is then developed. Using duality theory, the expected utility under the worst-case distribution is transformed into tractable piece-wise functions. To examine the effectiveness of the DFA in coping with the demand uncertainty, a stochastic programming model is developed and its solutions are used as benchmarks.
Findings
The proposed model and solution approach can effectively hedge against the demand uncertainty. The JPO decisions are significantly influenced by the LA coefficient and the reference level. The LA has a stronger influence than the reference level does on the expected utility. An excessive LA is detrimental while an appropriate reference level is beneficial to the retailer.
Practical implications
The results of this work are applicable to loss-averse retailers with the quantity-oriented RP when making JPO decisions with difficulty in predicting the demands.
Originality/value
The demand is assumed to be uncertain in this work, but a certain demand distribution is usually assumed in the existing literature. The DFA is used to study JPO decisions for the loss-averse retailer with quantity-oriented RP effect under the uncertain demand.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to find ways to mitigate the negative consequences of relationship conflict under the situation that while the negative role of team relationship conflict has been underscored in prior literature, few studies try to alleviate it. With the development of positive psychology, a stream focusing on the role of emotion in conflict management emerges. First, the authors want to explore the mediating role of members’ work engagement in the association between relationship conflict and members’ job performance. Moreover, they want to explore contingent roles of perceived team leader’s emotional intelligence and members’ emotion regulation strategies (i.e. cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression) in moderating the effect of relationship conflict on members’ work engagement.
Design/methodology/approach
Using a data set of 363 individuals working in 73 teams in service sectors, the authors empirically examined the cross-level model with hierarchical linear model.
Findings
Relationship conflict was negatively related to members’ job performance while members’ work engagement mediated this relationship. Moreover, perceived team leader’s emotional intelligence mitigated the negative effect of relationship conflict on members’ work engagement, while members’ expressive suppression strategy intensified the negative effect.
Originality/value
The authors address the void of the cross-level mediating process by examining the role of individual work engagement that mediates relationship conflict and individual job performance. The individual work engagement is highlighted in this study for the hope of serving as the basis of finding effective moderators to alleviate the negative relationship conflict–performance relationship by mitigating the decrease of work engagement. Moreover, the claim that the role of emotion from different status subjects varies in regulating the effect of relationship conflict contributes to the development of positive psychology by combining emotion with conflict management.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to examine the optimal promotion strategy of an e-retailer, who may advertise, or launch rebates initiative to encourage consumers' disseminating electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) messages, with an aim to boost product sales.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper analyzes the decisions of the e-retailer in a two-period model, using utility function approach and backward induction method, and obtains the optimal solutions in four promotion strategies.
Findings
The study finds that rebate scheme greatly impacts the timing of advertising, and neither lower nor higher consumers' eWOM effort invariably benefits the retailer, rather, a medium level is the best choice for the retailer. When eWOM impact power is at a relatively high level, it can supplement advertising effect to attract more consumers' purchase. Otherwise, eWOM may counteract the role of advertising.
Originality/value
Different from the extant literature focusing on advertising or eWOM without rebates, the paper studies the issue of advertising and eWOM with rebates in two- period model which seldom addresses before the authors examine the optimal timing of advertising and eWOM with/without rebates in four promotion strategies i.e. the A-NE model the NE-A model the A-ER model and the ER-A model.

Case overview
Yongye Group is a biotechnological enterprise in Inner Mongolia, China. In China, people lack trust in economic transactions due to the transitional state of the economy, especially regarding food safety. To respond to this situation, Wu Zishen, the chairman of the Board of Directors of Yongye Group, was determined to build trust among employees, distributors, farmers, and consumers towards the company. To this end, he started using a creative incentive system with employees and stakeholders: the pay-before-performance incentive system. According to this system, the reward is delivered in advance, contrary to be paid after the fulfillment of the task. This practice is meant to transform employees' work attitude from a passive “being told to work” to a more proactive “I want to work” mentality. When such an incentive system is practiced with customers and external distributors, it sends a message that the company is “treating customers as company employees”, which means that they are trusted as if they were part of the company itself. Wu Zishen also introduced a coherent series of leadership practices that generate a truly proactive culture in the organization.
Expected learning outcomes
From this case, students will learn how to create a proactive culture in business organizations and the effect of pay-before-performance on employees' work motivation.

Purpose
Aero-engine components endure combined high and low cycle fatigue (CCF) loading during service, which has attracted more research attention in recent years. This study aims to construct a new framework for the prediction of probabilistic fatigue life and reliability evaluation of an aero-engine turbine shaft under CCF loading if considering the material uncertainty.
Design/methodology/approach
To study the CCF failure of the aero-engine turbine shaft, a CCF test is carried out. An improved damage accumulation model is first introduced to predict the CCF life and present high prediction accuracy in the CCF loading situation based on the test. Then, the probabilistic fatigue life of the turbine shaft is predicted based on the finite element analysis and Monte Carlo analysis, where the material uncertainty is taken into account. At last, the reliability evaluation of the turbine shaft is conducted by stress-strength interference models based on an improved damage accumulation model.
Findings
The results indicate that predictions agree well with the tested data. The improved damage accumulation model can accurately predict the CCF life because of interaction damage between low cycle fatigue loading and high cycle fatigue loading. As a result, a framework is available for accurate probabilistic fatigue life prediction and reliability evaluation.
Practical implications
The proposed framework and the presented testing in this study show high efficiency on probabilistic CCF fatigue life prediction and can provide technical support for fatigue optimization of the turbine shaft.
Originality/value
The novelty of this work is that CCF loading and material uncertainty are considered in probabilistic fatigue life prediction.

Abstract
Purpose
The aim of this research is to study the relationships between occupational commitment, industrial relations and turnover intention, as well as the moderating role of turnover intention.
Design/methodology/approach
Empirical data for this study were collected using a questionnaire survey method. A total of 600 copies of the questionnaire were sent out by post or email to firms and 429 valid responses were finally obtained, yielding a response rate of approximately 71.5 per cent.
Findings
Except for the limited choices commitment, affective commitment, normative commitment and cumulative costs commitment are found to be significantly and positively related to industrial relations. Employees’ turnover intention may be detrimental to industrial relations, as our results show that it has a negative correlation with industrial relations. We also find that it negatively moderates the relationship between occupational commitment and industrial relations.
Practical implications
Our results shed light on human resource management practices in Chinese firms, and managerial implications are made to enhance Chinese employees’ occupational commitment.
Originality/value
This study extends the current literature and provides new insights into the relationship between the four dimensions of occupational commitment and industrial relations in the Chinese context. It also provides an understanding that this relationship is conditioned on employees’ turnover intention.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present a novel automatic planning and coordinated control method of redundant dual‐arm space robot for inner space‐station operation based on multiple sensors information by stages.
Design/methodology/approach
In order to improve the coordinated control capability of dual‐arm robot system, a four‐layer hierarchical control structure is designed based on the theory of centralization and decentralization. At the high‐level planning of dual‐arm system, a task decomposition strategy based on task knowledge and a task allocation strategy in terms of the robotic capability are proposed, respectively. Moreover, a control method by stages based on the information of multiple sensors is introduced to object recognition, task planning, path planning and trajectory planning. Finally, a 3D simulation and experiment of screwing nut and bolt are implemented on a dual‐arm robot system, and the feasibility and applicability of this control strategy are verified.
Findings
The automatic planning can be accomplished by means of sensors information by stages, and by this method, the autonomy and intelligence of dual‐arm space robot system can be further improved.
Practical implications
A new automatic planning strategy integrated with multiple sensors information by stages is proposed, and can be implemented on a dual‐arm robot system for inner space‐station operations. This method specializes in heterogeneous dual‐arm robot system.
Originality/value
