Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a theoretical account of how firms make choices between dynamic capability-based and ad hoc problem-solving approaches toward strategic change.

Design/methodology/approach

A model has been developed to answer the questions of how and under what conditions firms develop appropriate approaches to handle strategic change.

Findings

Drawing upon structural inertia theory (SIT) and the resource-based view (RBV), the model predicts that firms, regardless of their age and size, are more likely to adopt an ad hoc problem-solving approach to handle change in both highly dynamic and low-dynamic environments. However, in moderately dynamic environments, a dynamic capability-based approach may be more appropriate, depending on which theoretical logic (SIT or RBV) the decision is made.

Originality/value

The paper builds on the useful distinction made by Winter (2003) in terms of the ways to handle organizational change and extends the recent research on temporary vs sustainable competitive advantages to investigate how firms tackle strategic change within the contexts of both environmental dynamism and organizational attributes.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a novel statistic energy analysis method with fuzzy parameters to study the dynamic and acoustic responses of coupled system with fuzzy parameters, which can expand the applied range of statistic energy analysis method in engineering to some extent.

Design/methodology/approach

On the basis of the property of membership level, the uncertain fuzzy parameters are expressed as the interval forms. Interval mathematics and interval expansion principle are adopted to solve the problem with interval parameters. At last, two numerical examples, which include a two-plate coupled system and a single-partition sound-insulation system, are carried out to demonstrate the feasibility and validity of the presented method.

Findings

Interval mathematics and interval expansion principle are adopted to solve the problem with interval parameters.

Originality/value

By integrating the interval analysis, optimization technique and Taylor expansion method, two non-probabilistic, set-theoretical statistical energy analyses are proposed for predicting the dynamical and acoustical response of the complex coupled system with uncertain parameters in high-frequency domain.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to design an automatic press-fit instrument to realize precision assembly and connection quality assessment of a small interference fitting parts, armature.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, an automatic press-fit instrument was developed for the technical problems of reliable clamping and positioning of the armature, automatic measurement and adjustment of the attitude and evaluation of the connection quality. To compensate for the installation error of the equipment, corresponding calibration method was proposed for each module of the instrument. Assembly strategies of axial displacement and perpendicularity were also proposed to ensure the assembly accuracy. A theoretical model was built to calculate the resistant force generated by the non-contact regions and then combined with the thick-walled cylinder theory to predict the press-fit curve.

Findings

The calibration method and assembly strategy proposed in this paper enable the press-fit instrument to achieve good alignment and assembly accuracy. A reasonable range of press-fit curve obtained from theoretical model can achieve the connection quality assessment.

Practical implications

This instrument has been used in an armature assembly project. The practical results show that this instrument can assemble the armature components with complex structures automatically, accurately, in high-efficiency and in high quality.

Originality/value

This paper provides a technical method to improve the assembly quality of small precision interference fitting parts and provides certain methodological guidelines for precision peg-in-hole assembly.

Abstract

Purpose

Many e-commerce companies adopt a product customization platform offering various choices for customers to configure products to better satisfy their needs. However, a method to effectively measure customer satisfaction is lacking. This paper aims to investigate customers' perception of time in the online configuration process of customized products and seeks to propose time perception as the measurement of the effectiveness of online product customization.

Design/methodology/approach

An online laptop customization system was used in an empirical experiment to collect respondents' answers in a set of research questions. Regression and correlation analysis were conducted to investigate the factors affecting customers' satisfaction as well as the relationships with time perception.

Findings

The experimental results reveal several factors in customers' perception of time during the online product customization process. First, customers tend to overestimate the amount of time spent in a short-duration task but underestimate the amount of time spent in a long-duration task. Second, customers' perceptions of time are significantly correlated with their satisfaction with the configured products, and perceived time is moderately correlated with their satisfaction with the configuration process. Third, the difficulty of customization tasks and customers' motivation to process information also significantly affect customers' perceptions of time.

Originality/value

This paper advances the research on time perception by developing a new relative segmentation-based method to estimate the subjective perception of time. This study also makes several contributions to product customization research: the authors fill a research gap in the field of product customization by incorporating customers' perceptions of time into the measurement of customer satisfaction and by identifying the significant relationships among customers' perception of time, the ease of task selection, the customers' motivation to process information, and customers' satisfaction with customized products. These results aid in the design of online product customization systems.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to assess the orbital perturbation caused by the gravitational orbit–attitude coupling of spacecraft in the proximity of asteroids.

Design/methodology/approach

The gravitational orbit–attitude coupling perturbation (GOACP), which has been neglected before in the close-proximity orbital dynamics about asteroids, is investigated and compared with other orbital perturbations. The GOACP has its origin in the fact that the gravity acting on a non-spherical extended body is actually different from that acting on a point mass located at the body’s center of mass, which is the approximated model in the orbital dynamics. Besides, a case study of a tethered satellite system is given by numerical simulations.

Findings

It is found that the ratio of GOACP to the asteroid’s non-spherical gravity is the order of ρ/ae, where ρ is the spacecraft’s characteristic dimension and ae is the asteroid’s mean radius. It can also be seen that as ρ increases, GOACP will also increase but the solar radiation pressure (SRP) will decrease due to the decreasing area-to-mass ratio. The GOACP will be more significant than SRP at small orbital radii for a large-sized spacecraft. Based on the results by analyses and simulations, it can be concluded that GOACP needs to be considered in the orbital dynamics for a large-sized spacecraft in the proximity of a small asteroid.

Practical implications

This study is of great importance for the future asteroids missions for scientific explorations and near-Earth objects mitigation.

Originality/value

The GOACP, which has been neglected before, is revealed and studied.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on the team conflict theory and organizational learning theory, this study aims to discuss the two different types of conflicts of the top management team (TMT) on the different mechanisms of exploratory learning behavior of firms, and, based on the perspective of CEO-TMT (CEO – chief executive officer) interface, the different moderating effects caused by different CEO leadership styles are clarified.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the sample of 193 firms’ samples with multi-source data, the authors take an empirical test of the theoretical framework.

Findings

The effect of task conflict on exploratory learning behavior was insignificant, and relationship conflict had a positive effect on exploratory learning behavior. However, when CEO’s transformational leadership level was high, or transactional leadership level was low, there existed “bathtub curve” relationship between task conflict and exploratory learning behavior, and the relationship conflict under these conditions strengthened exploratory learning behavior. When CEO’s transactional leadership level was high, or transformational leadership level was low, there existed the inverted U-shaped relationship between task conflict and exploratory learning behavior, and the relationship conflict under such conditions weakened exploratory learning behavior.

Originality/value

First, the authors challenge the assumption of linear mechanism of task conflict, trying to build the mechanism of curve hypothesis, and the nonlinear explanation might be able to integrate the inconsistent results in the existing literature. Second, according to the inconsistent results of relationship conflict in existing literature, this study takes perspective of the CEO-TMT and introduces CEO leadership behavior as a moderating variable to test the moderating effect of CEO leadership and clarifies the boundary conditions of TMT conflicts.

Abstract

Purpose

The change rules of the shielding effectiveness (SE) of the sleeve has not been clarified, which leads to the lack of the basis for the design, manufacture and evaluation of the electromagnetic shielding (EMS) clothing.

Design/methodology/approach

According to a simplified analysis model, a series of sleeve samples with different fabrics and styles are designed and manufactured. The SE of the sleeve is tested with the proposed special test method in a semi-anechoic chamber to analyze the influence of different factors on the SE of the sleeve.

Findings

The SE is greatly reduced about 60–90% after the fabric is manufactured into the sleeve. The larger the sleeve length is, the higher the peak value of the SE is. When the sleeve length is low, the SE value is easy to appear negative. As the cuff circumference increases, the SE of the sleeve will change with the frequency band. The influence of the cuff style on the SE of the sleeve mainly depends on the cuff width and style. The larger the cuff width is, the lower the overall SE of the sleeve is. The more wrinkles there are at the cuff, the better the SE of the sleeve is.

Originality/value

Our results provide a reference for the design, production and evaluation of the sleeve and the whole EMS clothing.

Abstract

Purpose

This study explores the impact of owner chief executive officers' (CEO) narcissism on the exporting small to medium-sized enterprises' (SMEs) decision-making on the international market expansion speed after their initial entry. Specifically, the authors use the mechanism of firms' international entrepreneurial orientation (IEO) to examine how owner CEO narcissism may influence SMEs' post-entry speed of internationalization (PSI), both directly and indirectly.

Design/methodology/approach

To test the hypotheses, the authors draw on data from a two-wave questionnaire and on archival export data from 291 Chinese exporting SMEs in three municipalities and 17 provinces from 2019 to 2020.

Findings

The results support the theoretical predictions that owner CEO narcissism shapes exporting SMEs' decisions on PSI, both directly and indirectly, through the mediation of firm-level IEO.

Originality/value

The study extends emerging research on the role of CEO narcissism in the upper echelons literature into the international marketing (IM) context. It also offers new insights into what drives exporting SMEs' IM decision-making from a psychological microfoundations perspective. Furthermore, the authors theoretically establish and empirically demonstrate the key role of a firm's IEO as a mediator to complement the existing literature's focus on the direct influence of CEO narcissism on firms' internationalization decisions.

Abstract

Purpose

This study is a systematic literature review of the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in safety-critical systems. The authors aim to present the current application status according to different AI techniques and propose some research directions and insights to promote its wider application.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 92 articles were selected for this review through a systematic literature review along with a thematic analysis.

Findings

The literature is divided into three themes: interpretable method, explain model behavior and reinforcement of safe learning. Among AI techniques, the most widely used are Bayesian networks (BNs) and deep neural networks. In addition, given the huge potential in this field, four future research directions were also proposed.

Practical implications

This study is of vital interest to industry practitioners and regulators in safety-critical domain, as it provided a clear picture of the current status and pointed out that some AI techniques have great application potential. For those that are inherently appropriate for use in safety-critical systems, regulators can conduct in-depth studies to validate and encourage their use in the industry.

Originality/value

This is the first review of the application of AI in safety-critical systems in the literature. It marks the first step toward advancing AI in safety-critical domain. The paper has potential values to promote the use of the term “safety-critical” and to improve the phenomenon of literature fragmentation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to find the multi-factor influence law of stress, strain rate and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) on X70 pipeline steel in a simulated solution of sea mud and the order of influence of the three factors on X70 steel to develop a scientific basis for pipeline corrosion protection.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper studied the effects of stress, strain rate and SRB on the X70 pipeline steel corrosion behavior in simulated sea mud solution through orthogonal testing, electrochemical experiments and morphological observations.

Findings

The results of this study showed that stress proved to be the most relevant element for corrosion behavior, followed by SRB and strain rate. At high stresses (301 MPa and 576 MPa), stress dominated the corrosion behavior of X70 pipeline steel. However, at low stress (82 MPa), SRB played the most important role.

Originality/value

Subsea pipelines are in a very complex environmental regime that includes stress, strain rates and SRB, which often cause pipeline pitting and perforation. However, most scholars have only looked into the influence of single factors on metal corrosion. So, the single-factor experimental results of previous studies could hardly be applied to actual working conditions. There is an urgent need to understand the multi-factor influence law of stress, strain and SRB acting together on the pipeline corrosion behavior, especially to determine the dominant factor.
