Abstract

Purpose

Agricultural weather index insurance (WII) has been introduced in pilot or experimental form in many countries. However, the effective demand for WII is often limited by the impact of the basis risk. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to propose a new type of double trigger product, named “supplement” type, to reduce basis risk and improve the performance of the standalone WII.

Design/methodology/approach

Two measures of performance are introduced by the certainty equivalent income of expected utility theory. Through the Monte Carlo experiments and empirical study, this paper compares the performance of three types of double trigger products.

Findings

The findings indicate that the supplement type can significantly improve the performance of the single weather index product. First, it covers the downside basis risk and the catastrophic basis risk when the standalone WII fails to do so, especially in case of extreme losses. Second, it is superior when the correlation between the weather index and the yield index is not so strong, and can further enhance the performance of insurance even when the weather index and the yield index are highly correlated, for which the standalone WII could perform well.

Originality/value

The supplement type double trigger product proposed in this paper as an enhancement version finds a more preferable way to improve the standalone WII with relative lower complexity.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to find the event memory characteristics hidden in trade data.

Design/methodology/approach

First, historical trade data are analyzed to define the events described by multi‐dimensional characteristic variables. The variables containing information are employed to build the event description patterns. Furthermore, a search engine is developed for calendar events, which can search for events in historical data and produce a collection of events. The search engine also extracts relevant system reaction phenomena described by trend distribution for each event pattern. Finally, both event patterns and system reactions construct the episodic memory model.

Findings

The event patterns and the system reactions are used to define the episodic memory model. The search methods for the episodic memory model obtained from trade data set are given.

Research limitations/implications

Accessibility and availability of data are the main limitations affecting where the method can be applied.

Practical implications

The method is helpful for traders when judging the current trade situation from historical memory.

Originality/value

The paper presents a new episodic memory modeling method based on trade data.

Abstract

Purpose

3D chip stacking is a key technology for 3D integration in which two or more chips are stacked with vertical interconnections. In the case of multi chip stacking with fine pitch microbump connections, capillary dispensing presents big limitations in terms of cost and processability. The purpose of this paper is to describe the way in which wafer‐level underfill (WLUF) process development was carried out with particular emphasis on microbump height coplanarity, bonding pressure distribution and the alignment of the microbumps. A three factorial design of experiment (DOE) was also conducted to enhance the understanding of the factors impacting the WLUF process such as bonding pressure, temperature and time on reliability test.

Design/methodology/approach

B‐staged WLUF was laminated on an 8″ wafer with a 30 μm pitch bump structure of 8 μm Cu/5 μm Sn2.5Ag Pb‐free solder. After wafer dicing, the chip with the WLUF was assembled on a substrate chip with the same bump structure using a high accuracy bonder. The substrate chip had metalisation (wiring) to enable evaluation of the electrical characteristics of the bonded daisy chain chips as they varied with material bonding process conditions and reliability testing.

Findings

The WLUF bonding process development pertaining to the processability and reliability for the flip chip assembly using Cu/SnAg microbumps was successful in this work.

Originality/value

The development of a WLUF bonding process that offers reliability for flip chip assembly using Cu/SnAg microbumps has been presented in this work. The critical steps, such as alignment of the WLUF coated chip with the substrate chip and void elimination, which enable this technology to work were optimised.

Abstract

Purpose

A successful process of design concept evaluation has positive influence on subsequent processes. This study aims to consider the evaluation information at multiple stages and the interaction among evaluators and improve the credibility of evaluation results.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper proposes a multi-stage approach for design concept evaluation based on complex network and bounded confidence. First, a network is constructed according to the evaluation data. Depending on the consensus degree of evaluation opinions, the number of evaluation rounds is determined. Then, bounded confidence rules are applied for the modification of preference information. Last, a planning function is constructed to calculate the weight of each stage and aggregate information at multiple evaluation stages.

Findings

The results indicate that the opinions of the evaluators tend to be consistent after multiple stages of interactive adjustment, and the ordering of design concept alternatives tends to be stable with the progress of the evaluation.

Research limitations/implications

Updating preferences according to the bounded confidence rules, only the opinions within the trust threshold are considered. The attribute information of the node itself is inadequately considered.

Originality/value

This method addresses the need for considering the evaluation information at each stage and minimizes the impact of disagreements within the evaluation group on the evaluation results.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the pressure response characteristics of the cartridge electromagnetic relief valve, which offers the problems caused by low pressure response and low efficiency in hydraulic plate shearing machines.

Design/methodology/approach

First of all the mathematical model of the cartridge electromagnetic relief valve is deduced to analyze the influence of the relevant parameters on the system pressure response. Then experiments are conducted to research the dynamic characteristics on building and relieving pressure. Through comparison of theoretical and experimental research, the results are found.

Findings

The results show that the input flow, working pressure, diameter of adjacent damping hole, and spring stiffness of the main valve have great influence on building pressure of the system, and have no influence on relieving pressure, while diameter of damping hole of control cover plate has influence on the building and relieving pressure of the system.

Originality/value

The research results provide powerful theoretical support for the parametric design of the cartridge electromagnetic relief valve in the hydraulic system of plate shearing machine.

Abstract

Purpose

China has been going through a “museum boom” paralleling the domestic tourism boom since 2000; such growth changed the cultural landscape; museums became a vital characteristic of some Chinese cities for both residents and tourists. Encouraged by this growth, the more ambitious “All-for-one Museum (全域博物馆)” was proposed. The physical boundary between museums and living spaces is infinite ambiguity, challenging the idea of museums as “heterotopias.” This study aims to explore the musealization of urban spaces in the context of anthropology and museology, scrutinizing the cultural-political intentions and meanings of these developments, and seeks to ignite further investigation into the reconstruction of historical imaginaries for tourists and urban populations across related disciplines.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper examines two cases in Chinese metropolises, Beijing and Shanghai, to illustrate this development of musealization, that is, how the cities actively leverage museological values and methods to connect with their past. In the Beijing case, the authors explore how the local government is leading the effort to musealize the city; in the Shanghai case, they will see how tourists, especially dweller-tourists, navigate through a curated past story in the city and connect their own experience, memory and identity with the place.

Findings

The all-for-one museum creates a museal layer projected onto the bigger urban space, even though the authenticity of the “past” is challenged by the modernization development of the city. The authors also find out that for some tourists (especially dweller-tourists), an existential sense of authenticity plays a more significant role as they not only seek to sightsee the past of the city but also to take part in its creation.

Originality/value

This paper discusses two kinds of musealization in cosmopolitan cities of Beijing and Shanghai: top-down and bottom-up. It approaches questions about the musealization of urban spaces from the perspectives of anthropology and museology, and discusses musealization in the specific historical context of China’s modernization process.

This study establishes a risk management system for medical and health care integration projects to address the problem of high-risk potential and a strong correlation between risk factors.

Design/methodology/approach

A new fuzzy WINGS-G1 model for identifying key risk factors in medical and health care integration projects is proposed by introducing the fuzzy theory and the concept of risk incidence into the Weighted Influence Non-linear Gauge System (WINGS) method.

Findings

The authors analyze the fluidity of project risk factors through complex networks to control direct risks and cut off risk transmission paths to provide a reference for risk control and prevention of medical and health care integration projects.

Originality/value

(1) The integration of fuzzy theory into the WINGS method solves the problem of strong subjectivity of expert scoring in the traditional WINGS method; (2) By the different probabilities of risk factors, the concept of risk incidence is introduced in the WINGS model, which is more conducive to the identification of the critical risk factors and the rational allocation and utilization of organizational resources; (3) The use of the complex network for risk interactivity analysis fully reflects the dynamic nature of risk factors in medical and health care integration projects.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to obtain the mechanical behavior and damage mechanism of the coal and rock near the stope under the stress state and stress paths of the surrounding rock with the dynamic mining.

Design/methodology/approach

Through the three-axial compression test and the uniaxial compression test by meso experiment device, the mechanical behavior and fracture evolution process of coal and rock were studied, and the acoustic emission (AE) characteristics under uniaxial compression of the coal and rock were contrasted.

Findings

Under the three-axial compression, the strength of coal and rock enhance significantly by confining pressure. The volume of outburst coal shows obvious stages: compression is followed by expansion. The coal first appear to undergo compaction under vertical stress due to volume decrease, but with the development of micro- and macro-cracks, the specimens appeared to expand; under the uniaxial compression, through the comparison of stress–strain relationship and the crack propagation process, stress drop and fracture of coal have obvious correlation. The destruction of coal was gradual due to the slow and steady accumulation of internal damage. Due to the influence of the end effect, the specimens show the “conjugate double shear failure”. The failure process of the coal and rock and the characteristics of the AEs have a corresponding relationship: the failure causes a large number of AE events. Before the events peak, there was an initial stage, calm growth stage and explosive growth stage. There were some differences between the rock and coal in the characteristics of the AE.

Originality/value

These research studies are conducted to provide guidance on the basis of mine disaster prevention and control.

Abstract

Purpose

Yi Jing is one of the most archaic works among the Chinese classics. Various schools of thought developed their philosophies from the philosophical perspectives in this book and its influence is wide ranging and far reaching. This paper attempts to show how leaders can approach the Yi Jing beneficially by identifying the principles, values and virtues in each of the 64 scenarios, deriving insights about change and leadership. It also aims to show how the Yi Jing compares with Western management literature.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper provides an analysis of Qian Gua of Yi Jing as an example of how leaders can draw insights from Yi Jing about change and leadership.

Findings

Qian Gua, which is the first scenario in the Yi Jing, offers us powerful insights about change and leadership by offering: a framework of understanding change and human enterprises, considering the aspects of beginning, process, benefit and sustainability; a framework to understand the leadership development process; and leadership principles of conscientious self‐cultivation, transformational leadership through virtues and riding the tides of change.

Practical implications

A change and leadership model inspired by the Yi Jing should interest business leaders both in the east and the west, and help Westerners gain success in doing business in China or collaborating with the Chinese on a joint venture.

Originality/value

This is the first paper to draw insights about change and leadership through an analysis of Qian Gua of Yi Jing.
