Abstract
Purpose
The need for precise synthesis of customized designs has resulted in the development of advanced coating processes for modern nanomaterials. Achieving accuracy in these processes requires a deep understanding of thermophysical behavior, rheology and complex chemical reactions. The manufacturing flow processes for these coatings are intricate and involve heat and mass transfer phenomena. Magnetic nanoparticles are being used to create intelligent coatings that can be externally manipulated, making them highly desirable. In this study, a Keller box calculation is used to investigate the flow of a coating nanofluid containing a viscoelastic polymer over a circular cylinder.
Design/methodology/approach
The rheology of the coating polymer nanofluid is described using the viscoelastic model, while the effects of nanoscale are accounted for by using Buongiorno’s two-component model. The nonlinear PDEs are transformed into dimensionless PDEs via a nonsimilar transformation. The dimensionless PDEs are then solved using the Keller box method.
Findings
The transport phenomena are analyzed through a comprehensive parametric study that investigates the effects of various emerging parameters, including thermal radiation, Biot number, Eckert number, Brownian motion, magnetic field and thermophoresis. The results of the numerical analysis, such as the physical variables and flow field, are presented graphically. The momentum boundary layer thickness of the viscoelastic polymer nanofluid decreases as fluid parameter increases. An increase in mixed convection parameter leads to a rise in the Nusselt number. The enhancement of the Brinkman number and Biot number results in an increase in the total entropy generation of the viscoelastic polymer nanofluid.
Practical implications
Intelligent materials rely heavily on the critical characteristic of viscoelasticity, which displays both viscous and elastic effects. Viscoelastic models provide a comprehensive framework for capturing a range of polymeric characteristics, such as stress relaxation, retardation, stretching and molecular reorientation. Consequently, they are a valuable tool in smart coating technologies, as well as in various applications like supercapacitor electrodes, solar collector receivers and power generation. This study has practical applications in the field of coating engineering components that use smart magnetic nanofluids. The results of this research can be used to analyze the dimensions of velocity profiles, heat and mass transfer, which are important factors in coating engineering. The study is a valuable contribution to the literature because it takes into account Joule heating, nonlinear convection and viscous dissipation effects, which have a significant impact on the thermofluid transport characteristics of the coating.
Originality/value
The momentum boundary layer thickness of the viscoelastic polymer nanofluid decreases as the fluid parameter increases. An increase in the mixed convection parameter leads to a rise in the Nusselt number. The enhancement of the Brinkman number and Biot number results in an increase in the total entropy generation of the viscoelastic polymer nanofluid. Increasing the strength of the magnetic field promotes an increase in the density of the streamlines. An increase in the mixed convection parameter results in a decrease in the isotherms and isoconcentration.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate the micro mechanism of macro rheological characteristics for composite modified asphalt.Grey relational analysis (GRA) was used to analyze the correlation between macro rheological indexes and micro infrared spectroscopy indexes.
Design/methodology/approach
First, a dynamic shear rheometer and a bending beam rheometer were used to obtain the evaluation indexes of high- and low-temperature rheological characteristics for asphalt (virgin, SBS/styrene butadiene rubber [SBR], SBS/rubber and SBR/rubber) respectively, and its variation rules were analyzed. Subsequently, the infrared spectroscopy test was used to obtain the micro rheological characteristics of asphalt, which were qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed, and its variation rules were analyzed. Finally, with the help of GRA, the macro-micro evaluation indexes were correlated, and the improvement efficiency of composite modifiers on asphalt was explored from rheological characteristics.
Findings
It was found that the deformation resistance and aging resistance of SBS/rubber composite modified asphalt are relatively good, and the modification effect of composite modifier and virgin asphalt is realized through physical combination, and the rheological characteristics change with the accumulation of functional groups. The correlation between macro rutting factor and micro functional group index is high, and the relationship between macro Burgers model parameters and micro functional group index is also close.
Originality/value
Results reveal the basic principle of inherent-improved synergistic effect for composite modifiers on asphalt and provide a theoretical basis for improving the composite modified asphalt.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to investigate the thermoforming process of 3D-printed parts made from polylactic acid (PLA) and explore its application in producing wrist-hand orthoses. These orthoses were 3D printed flat, heated and molded to fit the patient’s hand. The advantages of such an approach include reduced production time and cost.
Design/methodology/approach
The study used both experimental and numerical methods to analyze the thermoforming process of PLA parts. Thermal and mechanical characteristics were determined at different temperatures and infill densities. An equivalent material model that considers infill within a print is proposed. Its practical use was proven using a coupled finite-element analysis model. The simulation strategy enabled a comparative analysis of the thermoforming behavior of orthoses with two designs by considering the combined impact of natural convection cooling and imposed structural loads.
Findings
The experimental results indicated that at 27°C and 35°C, the tensile specimens exhibited brittle failure irrespective of the infill density, whereas ductile behavior was observed at 45°C, 50°C and 55°C. The thermal conductivity of the material was found to be linearly related to the temperature of the specimen. Orthoses with circular open pockets required more time to complete the thermoforming process than those with hexagonal pockets. Hexagonal cutouts have a lower peak stress owing to the reduced reaction forces, resulting in a smoother thermoforming process.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the existing literature by specifically focusing on the thermoforming process of 3D-printed parts made from PLA. Experimental tests were conducted to gather thermal and mechanical data on specimens with two infill densities, and a finite-element model was developed to address the thermoforming process. These findings were applied to a comparative analysis of 3D-printed thermoformed wrist-hand orthoses that included open pockets with different designs, demonstrating the practical implications of this study’s outcomes.

Abstract
Purpose
The type 120 emergency valve is an essential braking component of railway freight trains, but corresponding diaphragms consisting of natural rubber (NR) and chloroprene rubber (CR) exhibit insufficient aging resistance and low-temperature resistance, respectively. In order to develop type 120 emergency valve rubber diaphragms with long-life and high-performance, low-temperatureresistant CR and NR were processed.
Design/methodology/approach
The physical properties of the low-temperature-resistant CR and NR were tested by low-temperature stretching, dynamic mechanical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. Single-valve and single-vehicle tests of type 120 emergency valves were carried out for emergency diaphragms consisting of NR and CR.
Findings
The low-temperature-resistant CR and NR exhibited excellent physical properties. The elasticity and low-temperature resistance of NR were superior to those of CR, whereas the mechanical properties of the two rubbers were similar in the temperature range of 0 °C–150 °C. The NR and CR emergency diaphragms met the requirements of the single-valve test. In the low-temperature single-vehicle test, only the low-temperature sensitivity test of the NR emergency diaphragm met the requirements.
Originality/value
The innovation of this study is that it provides valuable data and experience for future development of type 120 valve rubber diaphragms.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims at studying numerically the entropy generation of nanofluid flowing over an inclined sheet in the presence of external magnetic field, heat source/sink, chemical reaction along with slip boundary conditions imposed on an impermeable wall.
Design/methodology/approach
A suitable similarity transformation technique has been used to convert the coupled nonlinear partial differential equations to ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The ODEs are then solved simultaneously using the finite difference method implemented through an in-house computer program. The effects of different controlling parameters such as magnetic parameter, radiation parameter, Brownian motion parameter, thermophoresis parameter, chemical reaction parameter, Reynolds number, Brinkmann number, Prandtl number, velocity slip parameter, temperature slip parameter and the concentration slip parameter on the entropy generation and Bejan number have been discussed comprehensively through the relevant physical insights for the first time.
Findings
The relative strengths of the irreversibilities due to heat transfer, fluid friction and the mass diffusion arising due to the change in each of the controlling variables have been delineated both in the near-wall and far-away-wall regions, which may be helpful for a better understanding of the thermo-fluid dynamics of nanofluid in boundary layer flows. The numerical results obtained from the present study have also been validated with results published in open literature.
