Abstract

TED Talks are short videos of experts talking about a variety of topics. This paper outlines six TED Talks that connect with the leadership literature and topics commonly taught with an explanation of how they enhance teaching about a corresponding leadership topic. The researcher shares how introducing TED talks related to leadership can stimulate critical thinking about leadership while keeping the class interesting.

Abstract

Purpose

TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design, www.ted.com/) Talks has been one of the most popular video systems. However, the current TED Talks system expressed its inquired videos as in a two-dimensional (2D) table, which is inconvenient for searching the relationships among videos and tags. This study converts the TED Talks table into a sphere by using optimization techniques to help users search for preferred videos.

Design/methodology/approach

There are five phases in this study as follows. Phase 1: Reorganize data of 36 tags and 108 videos; Phase 2: Allocate tags on the TED sphere; Phase 3: Allocate videos on the TED sphere; Phase 4: Develop an online interactive TED retrieval system; and Phase 5: Perform survey and evaluation.

Findings

One survey demonstrated that the TED Talks sphere is more convenient for searching videos, as it is more user-friendly because of its graphical user interface, more convenient to use, more useful for retrieving information and can facilitate a more responsive search for users’ preferred videos.

Research limitations/implications

The numbers of tags and videos able to be displayed on a sphere is limited by the capacity of an optimization software and hardware.

Practical implications

The proposed sphere system can be used by a large number of users of TED Talks groups.

Social implications

This sphere systems can also be applied to other fields which use 2D forms to display the relationships among objects.

Originality/value

This study uses an optimization method to convert a 2D form into a 3D sphere to highlight the relationships among numerous objects.

Abstract

This chapter explores the potential for a rigid format of event structure that has been successful for decades to be curated by, hosted by, attended by and with speakers who are all children or young people. The chapter considers the opportunities for an event and the changes in format that need to be made to stay true to the essence of the TED format yet incorporating the creativity and brilliance of children and young people to ensure they gain the most from an event of this format.

Abstract

This chapter focuses on the value of TED Lectures on the issue of domestic violence and abuse (DVA). It outlines a generic framework with which to understand and analyse the impact of TED Lectures on a theme as complex as DVA is, in the context of popular Western culture. It does so by looking in details at the Ted Lecture of Leslie Morgan Steiner from 2012, which aims to answer the question ‘Why Domestic Violence Victims Don't Leave: Crazy Love’ through her own personal experience.

In the attempt to understand the impact of this TED Lecture we look at the literature on TED Lectures, the unique aspects of DVA, who is the presenter, the impact and its components, the active viewers who sent written comments on the Ted Lectures, the technical effect, the comparison with two other Ted Lectures on DVA, ending by identifying gaps in the analysis provided by the three Ted Lectures.

Presenters share with the viewers their personal experience, as well as their experience as activists in organisations and programmes set out to change the status quo in the field of DVA.

The lectures impact through layers of emotional and intellectual facets, which speak to the individuals viewing them through the lens of their own emotional and intellectual experiences of DVA on the one hand, while on the other hand being also influenced by the mode of presentation and the presenter her/himself.

Abstract

Recently, more data-driven approaches are demanding multilingual parallel resources primarily in the cross-language studies. To meet these demands, building multilingual parallel corpora are becoming the focus of many Natural Language Processing (NLP) scientific groups. Unlike monolingual corpora, the number of available multilingual parallel corpora is limited. In this paper, the MulTed, a corpus of subtitles extracted from TEDx talks is introduced. It is multilingual, Part of Speech (PoS) tagged, and bilingually sentence-aligned with English as a pivot language. This corpus is designed for many NLP applications, where the sentence-alignment, the PoS tagging, and the size of corpora are influential such as statistical machine translation, language recognition, and bilingual dictionary generation. Currently, the corpus has subtitles that cover 1100 talks available in over 100 languages. The subtitles are classified based on a variety of topics such as Business, Education, and Sport. Regarding the PoS tagging, the Treetagger, a language-independent PoS tagger, is used; then, to make the PoS tagging maximally useful, a mapping process to a universal common tagset is performed. Finally, we believe that making the MulTed corpus available for a public use can be a significant contribution to the literature of NLP and corpus linguistics, especially for under-resourced languages.

Abstract

Story‐telling has been identified as a metaphor for management consulting which focuses on the consultant as “impression manager”. The convincing power of strong stories told by consultants is emphasised. In this article management consulting is conceptualised through the metaphor of story‐making, identifying co‐operation and reflection as characteristic features. A specific consultancy process is interpreted as a co‐operative effort between the consultant and the client in which plot lines and characters are constructed. Plots can be opened or closed, and characters can be settled or negotiated. Thus story‐making as a reflective act moves between enhancing reflection and preparing for action.

Abstract

Purpose

Online knowledge communities have emerged as crucial places for knowledge and risk management in the face of systemic risks. The vitality of online knowledge communities requires users’ active engagement. This research paper aims to explore how text complex level and text analytic level as effective risk knowledge design leverages encourage users’ engagement under different “riskification” levels.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper performs linguistic analysis on 210 TED talk transcripts and 38,377 comments from 2002 to 2018. The authors construct the variable of text complex level and conduct ordinary least squares regressions to test the relationships among text complex level, text analytic level and user engagement under different levels of “riskification” in the online knowledge community.

Findings

High text complex level decreases engagement, while high text analytic level increases engagement. A high level of “riskification” exaggerates the negative effect of text complex level but diminishes the positive effect of the text analytic level.

Originality/value

This research advances knowledge management by highlighting users’ engagement and responding to shared risk knowledge from a different perspective than knowledge supply. The focus on risk communication in online knowledge communities broadens the scope of knowledge management literature beyond the confines of organizations. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this research is among the first studies to propose risk knowledge design approaches for communicating systemic risks.

Abstract

In post-normal times, when surprises and conflicts rule and the concept of normal is increasingly useless (Dufva & Rowley, 2022), leaders in organisations are faced with new and never-before-faced problems. That’s why it becomes crucial to focus on innovation leadership and its components. This chapter introduces Design2Be, a new methodology developed by Evidentia, a consulting firm, that changes the paradigm of leadership development. The very structure of Design2Be guides participants into an innovative experience of learning, no longer linear and sequential but circular and holistic, in which the goal is the development of an innovative self and team leadership mindset, by discovering and acting out a personal growth towards self-expression and fulfilment. We reflect on the development and application of this new approach, through a case story in a large Italian company with a group of (future) leaders testing and applying the new methodology. The chapter uses Paton’s (2001) reflective model to reflect on our roles as consultants, co-creating the approach with our client.
