Abstract

Purpose

This study revisits the relationship between environmental, social and governance (ESG) activities and firm performance. More importantly, it tests whether this relationship is moderated by critical yet underexplored factors such as stakeholder engagement, financial constraints, and religiosity.

Design/methodology/approach

A wide range of estimation techniques, including pooled ordinary least squares (OLS), fixed effects, system generalized method of moments (GMM) and propensity score matching-difference-in-differences (PSM-DiD), are employed to investigate such issues in a large sample of firms from 31 countries.

Findings

ESG performance has a positive and significant impact on firm performance. While stakeholder engagement positively moderates this relationship, financial constraints and religiosity negatively moderate it. Interestingly, this positive linkage is driven by environmental and social performance rather than governance performance.

Practical implications

Firms should proactively engage in ESG initiatives and consider the intervening influences of stakeholder engagement, financial constraints and religiosity in making decisions to invest in ESG activities. Furthermore, our findings can help policymakers understand the financial consequences of ESG practices, which can be helpful in designing new policies to further promote corporate engagement in ESG practices.

Originality/value

First, our research findings help reconcile the long-standing debate about the value impact of ESG. Second, our paper investigates relatively new aspects of the ESG-firm performance relationship. Third, our study offers more insight into the ESG literature by showing that not all ESG dimensions equally impact firm performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the relationship between Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices and financial distress in times of uncertainty.

Design/methodology/approach

Thomson Reuters ESG database, Compustat and Center for Research in Security Prices (CRSP) were used to derive a final sample size of 1,572 firms and 11,618 firm-year observations from 2003 to 2022. Fixed-effects regression was used to analyze the data.

Findings

It was found that increasing ESG involvement leads to an increase in Z score (i.e. lower financial distress), and this impact was more profound during the COVID-19 period and also when firms' innovativeness increased. However, during the COVID-19 period, increases in capital expenditures weaken the positive effect of ESG on financial distress.

Research limitations/implications

This study contributes to the growing body of literature on the impact of ESG performance on financial distress and the nature of this relationship during times of uncertainty such as COVID-19.

Practical implications

This study offers insights to managers and practitioners when developing their corporate financial strategies, particularly financial distress management, showing the potential benefits of innovativeness and capital intensity during turbulent times similar to COVID-19.

Originality/value

Little knowledge exists on how ESG engagement helps weather financial distress during periods of uncertainty due to external shocks (e.g. COVID-19). This paper looks at the effect of ESG engagement on financial distress and how capital intensity and innovativeness could influence this relationship while giving fresh insights into the impact of COVID-19.

Abstract

Purpose

Analyzing the impact of integrated reporting (IR) on international firms' value relevance, considering diverse information such as income, cash flows, risks, uncertainties and various capitals.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper used a sample of 300 international companies between 2010 and 2019. This paper collected the data from the Thomson Reuters Eikon database. Quantitative methods were used to test the hypotheses. Furthermore, the feasible generalized least squares (FGLS) method was performed to test the hypotheses.

Findings

The results suggest that IR and value relevance positively correlate, confirming the hypothesis. Moreover, this paper verified these results by conducting robustness tests on the contribution of the framework and guidelines prepared by the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC) in 2013.

Practical implications

This study enables users to evaluate company transparency and the relevance of disclosed nonfinancial information, providing valuable insights for report preparers and investors seeking profitable opportunities.

Originality/value

The interest in this research was motivated by the authors’ research field, which is innovative, as few studies have been conducted to explain the relationship between IR and value relevance. Similarly, this paper incorporated into their analysis the importance of the framework created by the IIRC in 2013 in preparing and presenting an integrated report. This paper considered the contribution of this framework to the creation of information content. This design has been overlooked in previous studies. However, this paper mobilized the FGLS method, which has been little used in previous studies.

Abstract

Purpose

With corporate social responsibility (CSR) becoming mandatory, several firms in India have been compelled into spending resources on CSR while their business strategy and processes were unprepared to take up CSR activities, effectively. In this light, the CSR relationship with other business functions would be altered. Using Thomson Reuters data from 2010 to 2018 (pre-mandate to post-mandate) this study aims to re-examine the relationship between CSR and financial performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The current study is rooted in the bandwagon-bias effect theory and uses a long-term data (2010–2018) of Indian firms. It uses Refinitiv Thomson Reuters ESG rating to measure CSR and accounting measures for financial performance (FP) to make a pre-post analysis of the impact that mandatory CSR regime has had on firms performance. The study uses the weighted panel regression method.

Findings

The relationship between CSR and FP is different when CSR was voluntary than when it has been mandated by Law. CSR has a positive effect over the FP during the voluntary phase but this positive relationship weakens during the mandatory phase. The waning effect of CSR over FP substantiates the presence of bandwagon bias effect which can be explained by the crowding-in of several companies engaged in CSR activities because of the mandatory CSR law.

Research limitations/implicationsv

Few countries have made CSR mandatory therefore CSR literature is limited. But mandating CSR is a growing phenomenon so this study augments to the body of knowledge. Until now literature generally converged on a positive relationship between CSR performance and FP but the current study shows altering directions to this relationship in a changing CSR environment. The use of the bandwagon-bias theory contributes to the theoretical approaches. Theoretically, the findings add to the body CSR literature and offer impetus to the evolving domain of impact measurement and reporting.

Practical implications

Results of the study offer a clear indication to managers that they need to re-strategise their CSR activities during the mandatory CSR environment if they wish to draw instrumental benefits of a positive impact on the FP of their firms. CSR expenditure is now a leveller so managers may either exceed the mandatory 2% expenditure as some firms did during the voluntary CSR phase or else design their CSR implementation plans to bring about a more impactful positive change. Communicating the impact of CSR to influential and powerful stakeholders beyond the mandatory reporting to the government is yet another way through which managers can draw benefits of CSR activities. Additionally to draw positive results from CSR activities firms may consider adopting international reporting and benchmarking standards such as the GRI and ISO 26000. Finally, the results of the study can be used by policymakers to make a note that the CSR law is causing a weakening of the financial benefits and therefore.

Social implications

The results of the study can be used by policymakers also need to make a note that the CSR law is causing a weakening of the financial benefits and therefore firms are adopting shortcuts, by donating the required amount of funds. But donation of funds defeats the real purpose of mandatory CSR which is social impact, therefore the regulators may want to make the necessary changes unplug the gaps in the CSR law to ensure better adherence to the law in spirit and a real impact on the ground activities.

Originality/value

While CSR–FP relationship has been extensively explored but limited studies have explored this relationship in a mandatory CSR environment and no other work presents a comparative view of the CSR–FP relationship, namely, before and after the mandatory CSR policy. The current study is one of the limited few studying the impact of mandatory CSR policy on FP, and the only one that uses the bandwagon-bias effect to explain the phenomenon of weakening impact of CSR on FP of firms. Bandwagon-bias effect has been used in studying consumer behaviour, where group effect impacts behaviour of individuals and with mandatory CSR policy, firms following the other firms leading to crowding in. Using the bandwagon-bias effect has found limited attention from the CSR scholars, the current study uses this theoretical basis and therefore augments the CSR literature.

COVID-19 and its accompanying lockdowns were arguably the most traumatic events of our times. This paper investigates the impact of COVID-19 on market efficiency.

Abstract

Purpose

COVID-19 and its accompanying lockdowns were arguably the most traumatic events of our times. This paper investigates the impact of COVID-19 on market efficiency.

Design/methodology/approach

I analyze all publicly traded U.S. equities for 2014–September 2021, using intraday data from TAQ, TRACE, I/B/E/S and Capital IQ and daily data from CRSP, Thomson Reuters, Compustat, CRSP-Compustat Merged Database and FRED, using a controlled contrast between absolute abnormal returns for relevant halfhours versus absolute abnormal returns in control halfhours, measured by the negative of the coefficient of the fixed effect of the interaction between the indicator variable, and as the case may be, ticker and/or time period of interest, in the regression of halfhour-level absolute abnormal returns on tickers, months and interactions.

Findings

Using two separate objective, systematic, independent and ordinal per se measures of market efficiency based upon market reactions separately to key developments and earnings announcements, I find that U.S. equities markets were statistically and economically significantly less efficient during the first two-three months of the COVID-19 lockdowns.

Practical implications

Efficient capital markets provide substantial social benefits and are a sine qua non for the democratization of markets and the protection of investors, and constitute a critical mission of regulatory bodies such as the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the U.S. Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA).

Social implications

The impact on market efficiency provides one critical input into the social cost-benefit analysis of public health policy and that of government interventions in general.

Originality/value

There has been no previous work done on the systematic and objective characterization of the impact of COVID-19 and associated lockdowns on market efficiency.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine whether social initiatives adopted by firms lead to improved financial performance. The authors analyse the impact of different elements of social initiatives on wealth creation for firms in terms of operating and market performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is based on the social initiative scores of over 4,500 firms collected from Thomson Reuters' ESG database. The study uses two-stage least squares (2SLS) to analyse the relationship between social initiatives and firm performance.

Findings

Profitable, mature, capital intensive and firms with high sales growth rate tend to invest more in social initiatives. Firms with high agency costs invest in social initiatives for workforce efficiency, maintaining human rights and product responsibility. The study documents evidence that social investments are value creating mechanism for firms which leads to improved financial performance in terms of operating and stock market performance. Firms with high dividend intensity invest in social initiatives for workforce welfare and human rights initiatives. Investment in employee well-being and community initiatives results in intangible benefits such as improved stock market valuation.

Practical implications

The research model has not considered the impact of intervening variables to understand the relationship between corporate social performance and corporate financial performance.

Social implications

Firms ought to recognize that social investment is beneficial in terms of value creation of firms as stock market perceive such investments favourably. Firms must focus more on community development initiatives and workforce initiatives for the value creation of firms compared to investments directed towards human rights initiatives and product responsibility initiatives.

Originality/value

This study focusses exclusively on the social dimension of the CSR activities. The authors examine the impact of social welfare scores on firm performance by analysing the valuation effects on scores representing workforce, human rights, community and product responsibility. Moreover, the paper also examines the impact of a new dimension of product responsibility on firm performance. They also focus on both aspects of financial performance in terms of operating performance (proxied by ROE) and the joint impact of both operating and market performance (proxied by Tobin’s Q). This paper contributes to the research on the linkage of social performance to financial performance by observing that firms with high agency cost characteristics tend to invest in social initiatives for work force efficiency, maintaining human rights and product responsibility.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the direct and indirect links between good corporate governance (GCG) and firm value using corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a mediating variable.

Design/methodology/approach

The data used in this research was collected from the Thomson Reuters Eikon ASSET4 database, involving 108 financial institutions belonging to 12 European countries listed on the stock exchange between 2007 and 2019. A multivariate linear regression analysis was conducted to test the hypotheses of this study.

Findings

Our results show that GCG has a positive effect on the firm value and CSR practices. Interestingly, the results indicate that CSR positively influences firm value. The results also reveal that CSR partially mediates the relationship between GCG and firm value.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature by providing evidence on how GCG increases firm value with the mediation mechanism of CSR in the link between GCG and firm value. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first research work documenting that GCG leads to better CSR, which ultimately results in increasing firm value of companies from the financial sector by bridging the information gap for this critical industry in the context of a developed market like Europe.

Abstract

Purpose

We examine the impact of corporate sustainability performance (CSP) on corporate cash holdings, focusing on the moderating impacts of industry’s concentration, financial constraints, and institutional environments.

Design/methodology/approach

The empirical analysis is conducted on a sample of 31 countries from 2002 to 2018. We use the pooled OLS regressions controlling for fixed effects. We further address endogeneity issues using an instrumental variable approach, the Difference-in-Differences regression based on an exogenous shock, and the propensity score matching.

Findings

We find that firms with superior CSP hold more cash. This result is valid after a series of tests for robustness and endogeneity issues, suggesting a causal effect of CSP on corporate cash holdings. In the cross section, the positive impact of CSP on cash holdings is more pronounced for firms operating in highly concentrated industries, but attenuated for firms with financial constraints and for those operating in countries with better institutional environments. We further show that CSP affects cash holdings through the channel of financial distress risk.

Practical implications

In making investment decisions, investors should not only examine corporate financial performance and sustainability profile, but also understand the related cash holding levels and financial distress costs. Corporate managers making decisions on levels of cash holdings should pay more attention to their sustainability behavior, especially for firms operating in concentrated industries and/or facing financial constraints. Governments and authorities can apply regulations to encourage firms to engage more in sustainable activities, as well as establish good institutional environments in the country.

Originality/value

Using a comprehensive international dataset, our paper contributes to two strands of literature: the economic impact of CSP and the driver of cash holdings. We further focus on the moderating role of industry concentration and firms’ financial constraints. Our international sample also allows us to exploit the effect of country-level informal institutions.

Abstract

Purpose

The present work aimed to investigate the impact of sustainability committees’ (SC) effectiveness in the Indian context in light of the Companies Act 2013. Particularly, we examined the direct and indirect links between SC effectiveness and corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance through the mediating role of CSR strategy.

Design/methodology/approach

This research analyzed the effect of SC effectiveness on CSR performance and the mediating effect of CSR strategy on the link between SC effectiveness and CSR performance of Indian listed companies following the Indian Companies Act 2013. Accordingly, we analyzed 480 observations in eight years (2014–2021) using panel regression analysis to test our hypotheses.

Findings

Regulatory mechanisms, such as the Companies Act 2013, enhance corporate governance efficiency. In this context, we confirm prior findings of a positive relationship between SC effectiveness and a firm’s CSR performance. Moreover, SC effectiveness enhances CSR performance through CSR strategy implementation.

Originality/value

The originality of this study lies in establishing direct and indirect links between SC effectiveness and CSR performance in light of the Companies Act 2013. Therefore, this paper enriches the literature on corporate governance, CSR strategies, and sustainability performance.
