Abstract

Purpose

A review of recent notable research on socioeconomic inequality, including Thomas Piketty’s Capital in the Twenty-First Century (2014), Rebecca Blank’s Changing Inequality (2011), Joseph Stiglitz’s The Price of Inequality: How Today’s Divided Society Endangers Our Future (2013), and Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett’s The Spirit Level: Why Greater Equality Makes Societies Stronger (2010).

Methodology/approach

I critically compare the contributions of Thomas Piketty’s Capital in the Twenty-First Century, Joseph Stiglitz’s The Price of Inequality, Rebecca Blank’s Changing Inequality, and Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett’s The Spirit Level. The comparison is focused largely on discerning analytical trends in studies of inequality and differential relationships with capitalism.

Findings

Popular scholarship on inequality is surprisingly diverse with varying analytical approaches and conclusions represented. Each of the works was consistent with regard to important role of the state as a mitigating institution.

Practical implications

The intent of these works was to engage the general public on the subject of economic inequality. Thus, it is important to know what information is being disseminated in a general sense and how this “public political economy” might influence popular views on inequality.

Originality/value

Comparative reviews of scholarship intended for general popular consumption are rare. Postrecession economic realities have driven inequality to the fore in many advanced capitalist societies making such a review timely as well.

Abstract

The human development and capability approach (HDCA) and its associated participatory method is receiving growing attention as a useful conceptual development for comparative international education. HDCA challenges the economism so prevalent in world development thinking and, instead, looks at development as a process of enhancing persons’ incrementally achieved substantive freedoms from deprivations. The centrality of the person replaces the centrality of income growth.

The application of HDCA to the study of the role of education that promotes social justice change is illustrated by using an empowerment-capability framework to the long-term study of the benefits of village schooling for rural girls in western China.

Using HDCA to identify influences on social change, we derive a much more nuanced and valuable multi-dimensional view of human development, which enables us to draw broad implications for more effective policy. National policies should use a multi-dimensional informational base including equality, sustainability, and non-market dimensions of well-being as well as market production.

Abstract

Throughout history, enterprises have tried to survive by competing in a dynamic environment. This competition has currently been to be more severe more in the age of Industry 4.0 due to modern automation systems, production technologies, and data exchanges. Today’s high technology and speed environment changes have created volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA) for almost all companies. To be able to cope with these environmental conditions, they have to be more dynamic, have more flexible and agile abilities. Not only it is not enough to have these abilities but also they need to use these abilities effectively. As to usage of these capabilities, it depends on organizational structure that have been built by considering several situational factors such as technology, technological change, innovation, and environmental instability. Organizational structure is a very important variable to increase the performance of the organization and to gain competitive advantage over enterprises’ competitors. In order that this study is guide for practitioners, it has been tried to explain the linkages among VUCA World, organizational structure and competitive advantage. Also, suggestions have been offered them to build their organization structure in order to be competitive by gaining success in three platforms called human resources, knowledge, and technology.
