Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify factors influencing the adoption of mobile banking in India and develop and empirically validate a model explaining the behavioural intention to use mobile banking in the Indian banking sector.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, a model is developed and proposed to explain customers’ intention to use mobile banking. The model comprises six constructs, namely, perceived ease of use, computer self-efficacy, social influence, perceived financial cost, security, and trust. The model also describes the relationship between perceived ease of use and computer self-efficacy, as well as that between security and trust. The proposed model was tested by using a survey method, with a sample of 855 bank customers from public, private, foreign, and cooperative banks in India. Structural equation modelling analysis was performed with AMOS 16.0.

Findings

The proposed theoretical model was found to predict, with statistical significance, the intention to use mobile banking, explaining 76.9 per cent of the variance in the dependent variable. The results found that security, computer self-efficacy, perceived ease of use, and perceived financial cost, in that order of influence, affect customers’ intention to adopt mobile banking.

Practical implications

The results obtained will help both academic researchers and practitioners explain, understand, and elucidate the status of mobile banking in India, as well as helping them formulate strategies to expedite the use of mobile banking.

Originality/value

The adoption of mobile banking in India is in a nascent stage compared with developed countries such as the USA, the UK, and Finland, but it is expected to increase or surpass the rate of adoption of internet banking in those countries. Further, only limited research to date has examined the adoption of mobile banking in India, especially the drivers and inhibitors of mobile banking adoption.

Purpose

Social media users can now create, exchange, modify and consume socially generated experiences which can enhance social influence toward mobile banking (MB). This study aims to provide understanding of how social actor interactions through social networking platforms (SNPs) can create social influence for MB adoption and present a research framework that can help to understand which social actors have higher social influence toward MB adoption in conventional and Islamic banks.

Design/methodology/approach

SNP users have different levels of perceptions and experiences about the usability and credibility of MB. Therefore, their experiences are subjective realties which can generate socially constructed knowledge. To understand these subjective realties, a social constructivist approach is adopted. Data were collected from interviews with 60 individuals from diverse occupational backgrounds.

Findings

Identification element of social influence explained that the shared reviews and recommendations of opinion leaders, industry experts, celebrities and friends were highly positive for conventional banks; therefore, there is high word-of-mouth for MB of conventional banks. Internalization of social influence highlighted that people are more likely to accept the wisdom of the crowd and close friends, which can generate their engagement and connection with MB. Finally, the compliance factor of social influence explained that people can only adopt MB when they perceive high usability and credibility.

Research limitations/implications

This study has provided understanding to the marketers of how social actors on SNPs can play a role in the creation, exchange, modification and consumption of socially generated influence that can impact the MB adoption intention for conventional and Islamic banks.

Originality/value

Although many theories and models have been presented about the marketing strategies and antecedents of MB adoption, the extensive use of SNPs has changed marketing strategies. For example, this study has found that social media users are highly influenced by the social reviews and recommendations they receive from their close friends. Therefore, socially generated influence on SNPs can create an adoption intention toward MB.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the determinants of consumers’ intention to adopt mobile banking services in Zimbabwe.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey of 232 bank customers was conducted in Chinhoyi, Zimbabwe, using a structured questionnaire with Likert-type questions. Customers were randomly intercepted as they walked out of five major banks. Structural equation modelling, independent-samples t-test and one-way ANOVA were used to test research hypotheses.

Findings

The study found that perceived usefulness, perceived self-efficacy, social influence, relative advantage and perceived compatibility all have a positive effect, whilst perceived risk has a negative effect on behavioural intention to adopt mobile banking services in Zimbabwe. Perceived ease of use, facilitating conditions, perceived complexity, perceived trialability, awareness-knowledge and demographic factors (gender, age, education and income) did not significantly influence behavioural intention to adopt mobile banking. Perceived ease of use was found to positively influence perceived usefulness, while perceived self-efficacy was found to have a positive effect on perceived ease of use. Behavioural intention was found to positively influence usage of mobile banking services in Zimbabwe.

Research limitations/implications

Data were collected from bank customers in Chinhoyi, one of the emerging towns in Zimbabwe. Future research should be expanded to include other major cities in Zimbabwe and other countries. More similar studies should be conducted to test the factors identified in literature in different contexts and markets and on other innovations.

Practical implications

The study advises banks to pay particular attention to perceived usefulness, perceived self-efficacy, social influence, relative advantage, perceived compatibility and perceived risk when designing new mobile banking services.

Originality/value

There is not a unified position regarding factors influencing mobile banking adoption. Factors vary with contexts, markets, time and types of innovations. The study tested some major factors identified in literature in the context of Zimbabwe.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to test the factors that can influence adoption of mobile banking among current users of internet banking in Singapore and gender as a moderating variable.

Design/ methodology/ approach

A sample of more than 600 current users of electronic banking provided opinions about their intention to use mobile banking, perceptions of relative advantage of the mobile device, perception of risk, social norms, ease of use and usefulness of the device for banking purposes. The data were submitted to LISREL for structural equation modeling.

Findings

Usefulness, social norms and social risk, in this order, are the factors that influence the intention to adopt mobile banking services the most. Ease of use has a stronger influence on female respondents than male, whereas relative advantage has a stronger effect on perception of usefulness on male respondents. Social norms (or the importance of others in the decision), also influence adoption more strongly among female respondents than male.

Research limitations/implications

The sample is biased towards people who are currently using internet for banking. However, mobile banking innovators may not come mainly from current users of internet banking.

Practical implications

Since gender plays a moderating role in the perception of ease of use, social norms and relative advantage, companies are advised to target their communication tactics according to gender. Social norm is more important to females than males as well as ease of use, whereas, relative advantage is more important for males.

Originality/ value

The study purposefully uses gender as a moderator and risk as an independent variable not often considered in previous studies.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to address the following question: Can a bank capitalize on its well-established self-service technologies (SSTs) in order to entice customers to adopt a newly introduced SST, namely, mobile banking? More specifically, it proposes an integrative model that simultaneously investigates the transference effects of attitudes, trust and the contagious influences of social pressures on mobile banking adoption intentions.

Design/methodology/approach

Structural equation modeling is applied to data collected from banks’ clients who are actually non-users of mobile banking.

Findings

The results indicate that attitude toward and trust in mobile banking along with coercive, normative and mimetic pressures are key antecedents to mobile banking adoption intentions. In addition, attitudes toward automated teller machines (ATMs) and online banking significantly predict attitude toward mobile banking. The results also support the effects of trust in ATMs as well as trust in online banking on trust in mobile banking. Moreover, predicted differences in the relative effects of attitude and trust are supported. Particularly, attitude toward online banking has a stronger impact on attitude toward mobile banking compared to the impact of attitude toward ATMs. In the same vein, the effect of trust in online banking on mobile banking is significantly stronger than the effect of trust in ATMs.

Practical implications

The study’s results hint at some practical and worthwhile guidelines for banks that can be leveraged in communication campaigns aiming at boosting the adoption rates of mobile banking. Banks can take advantage of the transference effects of the established attitudes toward and trusting beliefs in their mature SSTs as well as the contagious social influences in inducing the adoption of a newly introduced SST.

Originality/value

The present study represents a first step toward generating new insights into the role of the joint effects of attitudes, trust and social influences in the adoption of a new SST.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact factors towards the use of mobile banking among the asnaf for efficient zakat payments by using the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT2) model with additional constructs such as religiosity, attitude and trust (initial trust model) in the Malaysian context.

Design/methodology/approach

The structural equation modelling is used to analyse the data collected from 470 asnaf in Selangor, Malaysia, using the survey methodology.

Findings

This study highlights factors that could influence the asnaf to adopt financial technology (fintech) in order for them to enjoy the benefit of efficient zakat distribution by the zakat institutions.

Research limitations/implications

This study only investigates and contributes added value from the Malaysian context. While it may be similar to other countries that share similar demographic profiles, it might differ for countries that do not have any demographic similarities with Malaysia.

Practical implications

The result of this study highlights the significant factor that practitioners (zakat institutions) in Malaysia could improve fintech adoption and at the same time enhance the efficiency of zakat distribution for the asnaf.

Social implications

This research is basically addressing Islamic social financing. Thus, this study has social implications to address the society's poverty eradication scheme pertaining to the efficiency of zakat institutions in Malaysia for the speedier zakat payments to the asnaf. However, other emerging issues also arise particularly in using the zakat funds by the zakat institutions. By right whatever expenditure that the institutions use from the zakat funds need to have the consent from the asnaf because of their religious and legal rights. Hence, this new gap found from the findings of this study could be further explored by other researchers in future studies especially focusing on the drive towards more efficient administration by the zakat institutions of Malaysia in particular and other zakat institutions spread over Muslim countries elsewhere.

Originality/value

This study found that the UTAUT2 model is rarely used and adopted in investigating technology acceptance and adoption especially when it is related to religious matters such as zakat. Indeed, the findings of this study could be acknowledged as something of original value and significance, therefore contributes to the body of knowledge in this field.

Abstract

Purpose

As mobile payment systems have been in constant demand and are increasing in recent years, the various stakeholders involved in the process need to be identified. The study mainly includes ease of use, perceived usefulness, facilitating conditions, social influences, adoption readiness and intention to use financial technology (FinTech) in India. This paper aims to discuss FinTech and its dynamic changes in the banking sector. This study tests the mediation influence of perceived trust on adoption readiness and intention to use FinTech in India. The proposed impact of mediation of perceived trust was significant but small on adoption readiness and intention to use FinTech.

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire survey was administered to mobile payment users, and 349 responses were collected. Structural equations are analyzed to determine the proposed variables’ direct effects on adopting them. Additionally, to examine indirect effects, the mediation test is used.

Findings

The analysis results support the proposed model and thus help explain the impact of adoption readiness, trust and intention to use digital payment. The study’s significant findings will enable mobile payment institutions to understand the variables related to the growing use of technology in customers’ contexts. The study reveals the significance of ease of use, perceived usefulness and facilitating the service condition, which means that vendors prefer to use compatible devices that are easy to use with other devices. The analysis also explores the critical influence of perceived usefulness on customer behavior, enabling software designers to encourage accessible processes and device advantages for customers.

Practical implications

Mobile payment systems offered by financial institutions until currently become a variety of mobile payment services due to rapidly evolving information technology. This work is a groundbreaking attempt to apply technology acceptance in recent years to the emerging framework of mobile banking systems. This study examines the adoption of mobile payment technologies by proposing an extended technology acceptance model (TAM) to capture the issues associated with adoption in India through banking users. Now customers are aware that cyberattacks on banking networks and data breaches quickly through media and social networks. Also, they know that the industry has done little to avoid or mitigate these attacks.

Originality/value

This study examines the adoption of mobile payment technologies by proposing an extended TAM to capture the issues associated with adoption in India through banking users.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this paper is to explore the possible impact of mobile banking service quality (MBSQ) on customer value co-creation intention (CVCI).

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire was administered to research participants from Jordan. A total of 562 valid questionnaires were analysed. Mediation and moderation evaluations were performed in order to examine the function performed by MBSQ, customer engagement (CE), and social presence as determinants of CVCI. Structural equation modeling of type covariance-SEM using AMOS software was employed for the analysis.

Findings

The research results verify the proposition that MBSQ, CE, and social presence can all influence. In addition, the mediating role of customer engagement in respect of the relationship between MBSQ and CVCI is also confirmed in this research.

Practical implications

This research is of use to bank managers who must allocate resources during the development of m-banking platforms, wherein value co-creation in banking can be promoted.

Originality/value

This study comprises an original contribution to current scholarship in the field of m-banking through its examination of the impact of customer engagement with m-banking. Moreover, this research augments current literature pertaining to the function of MBSQ in relation to CVCI as tempered by customer engagement and social presence.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the distinct effects of different communication channels, particularly interpersonal networks, social media, and mass media on customer beliefs and usage intention in a mobile banking (MB) context.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employed a combination of both qualitative and quantitative research approaches with an exploratory sequential research design in two major phases: focus groups; and a large-scale survey among 183 New Zealand young adults.

Findings

The most significant influential factor of usage intention was perceived usefulness, followed by perceived credibility and perceived costs. Face-to-face communication with bank staff and close acquaintances was perceived as the most reliable and persuasive sources of banking-related information. Moreover, mass channels were considered to be more important and trustworthy than social media in the MB sector. The research results revealed that the current status of MB diffusion in New Zealand is in the latter stages (Late Majority and Laggards) of the innovation diffusion cycle.

Practical implications

In light of the research findings, bank marketers can make the right decisions on marketing actions to promote MB effectively as well as develop appropriate communication policies to speed up the consumer decision process. Researchers and allied industries (e.g. mobile commercial services) could also gain benefits from applying these results to understand the impact of communication channels on consumer perceptions and behaviours towards new technology acceptance.

Originality/value

The research outcomes have served to broaden the knowledge into the distinguishing influences of major communication channels on customers’ beliefs and intention to adopt new banking services.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore a consumption values model for Islamic mobile banking acceptance and to identify any differences in perceived consumption values between Muslims and non-Muslims towards the use of Islamic mobile banking services.

Design/methodology/approach

Using an online survey method, a sample of 183 was collected and the partial least squares (PLS) method was used to evaluate the model and validate hypothesis, as it is ideal for assessing both the psychometric properties of all scales and, subsequently, to test the structural relationships proposed in the model.

Findings

Empirical results via the PLS method demonstrates that the result satisfactorily explains the adoption of Islamic mobile banking and further demonstrates the use of the consumption values model as an alternate approach for technology adoption. The consumption values model approach appears to have a stronger fit for Muslims than non-Muslims with 66.6 per cent of the variance explained and a goodness-of-fit index of 0.724. The conditional factors are important in the non-Muslims compared to Muslims. Muslims seem to value emotional factors more than non-Muslims.

Research limitations/implications

The current research findings represent mainly university students with some exposure to Islamic mobile banking experience and familiarity with mobile technology. Indeed, the samples were taken from Malaysia, an Islamic country that has a diverse ethnic and cultural background. Hence, the result may not apply to other Islamic countries, e.g. Arabic countries due to the cultural background differences. Future researchers could overcome the limits of generalisability by increasing sample coverage.

Practical implications

This research finding is useful as the comparison is made between Muslim and non-Muslim consumers which help practitioners and researchers to better understand the different adoption characteristics and advance insights on how to promote such a technological service for everyday banking needs especially to different segments of the community. In developing Islamic mobile banking interactions, designers should look beyond the system’s ease of use and take advantage of the different consumption values to include personalisation in the service design through automatically recognising Muslim customers and non-Muslim customers during system use.

Originality/Value

The study contributed to the theory of consumption values model in technology adoption and demonstrated the model is capable of explaining the functional, emotional, epistemic, conditional and social values on consumers in their adoption intention. This research provides empirical findings not reported in previous studies due to the overly represented technology acceptance model approach.
