Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of the paper is to delve into innovation and happiness management linked to the definition of transcendence at work. The paper analyses in the context of innovation and happiness management the relation of the three dimensions taken from Khari and Sinha (2020: Sense of we-ness, self-connectedness and work as a service. The paper also proposed indicators to applied transcendence and moral competencies to the banking sector guiding behaviour toward successful experiences at work as an antecedent of both, transcendence and employees´ performance.
Design/methodology/approach
The article starts with a VOSviewer-based bibliometric analysis to examine the recent development of happiness management as an emergent topic of research. A co-word analysis served to identify that the main research theme related to the topic is transcendence at work. The theoretical framework serves for developing a conceptual model that is analysed by taking structural equations modelling (SEM) as the method and partial least squares (PLS) as the technique. To test the hypotheses, the authors employed a sample of 354 employees from the main banks in Spain in 2021 (Santander, Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA), CaixaBank, Bankia and Sabadell).
Findings
The results confirm that Innovation and happiness management is related to moral competencies, which refer to the set of knowledge, skills and abilities that facilitate ethical behaviour in the banking sector. Innovation and happiness management include individual attributes for good performance in each job; this research is in line with the prominent call in the literature to consider moral competencies in human resources management.
Originality/value
Originality lies on the answer of the question: what is the role of employee transcendence in the turbulent banking sector today? This paper seeks to approach and measure the relation of innovation, happiness and transcendence at work, Transcendence at work often arises when individuals connect their work to a higher purpose or mission, that connection is based on the idea that any effort to improve any of these three attributes provides successful solutions for the complex banking sector's performance.

Abstract
Purpose
Without competent and talented employees, no organisation can grow and sustain for a long time. It becomes essential for every organisation to retain and satisfy the employees to achieve their predetermined organisational goals. The present study examines the mediating effect of workplace spirituality dimensions (i.e. meaningful work, compassion, transcendence, mindfulness and sense of community) in the link between job satisfaction and organisational citizenship behaviour (OCB) among managerial employees of selected manufacturing firms of Chhattisgarh state.
Design/methodology/approach
Correlational research design was incorporated. Employees working at managerial positions at different private manufacturing firms of Chhattisgarh state were chosen as a sample for the present study. Regression analysis and confirmatory factor analysis tools were used to analyse the primary data collected from 400 respondents.
Findings
The results revealed that all the dimensions of workplace spirituality, i.e. meaningful work, compassion, transcendence, mindfulness and sense of community, were found statistically significant and partially mediated between job satisfaction and OCB among managerial employees of Chhattisgarh. The authors discussed the results thoroughly and provided avenues for the future research.
Research limitations/implications
The findings of the present research study will assist all private organisations in rethinking their employee retention and satisfaction strategies, since the presence of workplace spirituality in the organisation has a significant and beneficial impact on its environment. The current research will assist organisations in creating circumstances for OCB for employee via the introduction of workplace spirituality.
Originality/value
Creating spirituality in the current situation, where Covid-19 has suddenly affected all organisations around the world, would be extremely beneficial in terms of employee retention and satisfaction, which would eventually aid in the development of an environment conducive to citizenship behaviour at the workplace. However, the role of workplace spirituality as a mediator in the link between job satisfaction and OCB is innovative and has received little attention in the research community.

Abstract
Purpose
Drawing on the self-determination and conservation of resources theories, as well as the transactional theory of stress, this paper aims to develop and empirically test a research model depicting the interrelationships of sense of calling, emotional exhaustion (EXH), intent to remain with the organization (IRO), task-related pro-environmental behavior (PEB) and non-green behavior (NGB).
Design/methodology/approach
Data came from hotel employees with three waves of one-week time lag and their direct supervisors in China. The authors assessed these linkages through structural equation modeling.
Findings
Sense of calling mitigates EXH and NBGs, while it fosters IRO and task-related PEBs. EXH partly mediates the influence of sense of calling on NGBs.
Practical implications
It is important to maintain a workplace in which employees foster their work competence, possess a more positive interpretation of work meaning and accomplish their career goals. Management should organize environmental training programs that would compel employees to pay attention to the protection of nature and scarce resources and enable them to be involved in the environmental sustainability process.
Originality/value
A search made in the hospitality and tourism literature shows that few studies have investigated the consequences of employees’ sense of calling. The authors’ search also highlights the void that little is known about the mechanism linking sense of calling to green and non-green outcomes.

Abstract
Research was conducted to empirically demonstrate the relationships between personal meaning, calling and organizational commitment in the context of spiritual leadership. Wong's Personal Meaning Profile was used to establish the various sources of personal meaning and identify those that predict calling. The results showed significant positive correlations between self‐transcendent personal meaning and calling. Further, calling was also positively correlated with organizational commitment and contrasted with work‐as‐job as a predictor of commitment. The study suggests that not all sources of personal meaning are predictive of calling, and that calling mediates the relationship between self‐transcendent personal meaning and organizational commitment. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to study individual sustainability competencies and its linkage toward building innovation capabilities. This study explores the interrelations between individual-level competencies with organizational-level capabilities.
Design/methodology/approach
Thematic content analysis is used to analyze the qualitative interview data from 22 experts working in the sustainability departments of large corporations in India. The respondents were chief sustainability officers, sustainability managers or general managers responsible for driving sustainability in their organizations.
Findings
This study identifies individual sustainability competencies into two sets. First being cognitive competencies and the second being emotional competencies. The cognitive competencies identified are systems thinking, future orientation and perspective-taking (cognitive empathy). The affective or emotional competencies identified are connectedness to nature, sense of transcendence of time and empathic concern. The competencies enhanced innovation through the development of stakeholder capabilities and organizational learning capabilities.
Research limitations/implications
This study provides new insight regarding the link between both cognitive and emotional competencies and organizational capabilities for innovation.
Practical implications
This study appraises the role of individual sustainability competencies on innovation. This study indicates the importance of developing sustainability competencies at the individual level to drive innovation.
Originality/value
This paper provides novel insights on sustainability competencies and its link with innovation. The conceptualization of competencies was made as cognitive and emotional skills. Furthermore, its relationship with innovation capabilities advance the understanding of the individual contribution to innovation.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to discuss how religiously and non-religiously affiliated individuals may view the three core workplace spiritual values: transcendence, existence of a higher power and interconnectedness. Additionally, this paper studies how the contrasts between the views of religiously and non-religiously affiliated individuals about the three core spiritual values affect their performance of social responsibility initiatives.
Design/methodology/approach
A conceptual analysis was used.
Findings
This paper suggests that religiously and non-religiously affiliated individuals view the three core spiritual values differently. Drawing upon the three core spiritual values viewed by religiously and non-religiously affiliated individuals, this paper proposes the following. First, religiously affiliated individuals will focus on implementing social responsibility initiatives for a longer time orientation compared to non-religiously affiliated individuals. Second, when engaging in social responsibility, religiously affiliated individuals will focus on implementing a smaller scope of social responsibility initiatives than non-religiously affiliated individuals. Finally, religiously affiliated individuals will focus on implementing a larger scale of social responsibility initiatives than non-religiously affiliated individuals.
Originality/value
This paper is one of the very first studies addressing how religiously and non-religiously affiliated individuals view core values of spirituality. Additionally, this paper advances the literature by contrasting how religiously and non-religiously affiliated individuals engage in socially responsible initiatives in accordance with how they view spirituality.

Abstract
Over the past few years there has been increasing interest in the importance of spirituality for those in the fourth age of life in care settings. The emphasis on person‐centred approaches has led to recognition of spiritual needs as well as the need for spiritual assessment and care planning. In this paper we reflect on what makes life worth living at different stages, and review the spiritual needs of the fourth age in relation to those inner needs with which many of us would identify.We suggest that several approaches are required in order to understand and meet the spiritual needs of people in the fourth age. While a person‐centred approach is essential, much can also be gained from a broader understanding that places the older person in the context of the wider community. Spiritual and other needs may be met through addressing social inclusion.If we are to properly understand and meet the spiritual needs of those in the fourth age, both in the community and in care settings, we need a new paradigm. The insights and practice tools developed in other areas (through the Valuing People and social inclusion agendas) could provide a useful framework to assist in meeting the spiritual needs of the fourth age. This paper aims to contribute to, and extend, the debate about meeting spiritual needs of people in care settings.

Abstract
Debate over the definition of “spirit at work” continues in both the popular and academic literatures. The lack of a clear, accepted definition has hindered the development of useful measures and has delayed research that would advance our understanding of the conditions/characteristics that influence the experience of spirit at work and the individual and organizational outcomes that result from spirit at work. To obtain a clearer understanding of an individual level construct of spirit at work, an exploratory, qualitative study was conducted. A total of 14 professionals, who not only experienced spirit at work, but whose work also involved researching or promoting spirit at work, participated through face‐to‐face interviews, telephone interviews, or written surveys. Participants were asked about what is spirit at work and then they were asked to describe a personal experience of spirit at work. Although most people had difficulty providing a comprehensive definition for spirit at work, they found it very easy to recall and describe such an experience. These rich descriptions of their personal experiences of spirit at work revealed much consistency in experiences among individuals. Participants’ descriptions revealed that spirit at work is a distinct state that has physical, affective, cognitive, interpersonal, spiritual, and mystical dimensions. This state involves physiological arousal, positive affect, a belief that one's work makes a contribution, a sense of connection to others and common purpose, a sense of connection to something larger than self, and a sense of perfection and transcendence. The usefulness of a clear, comprehensive definition of spirit at work to advancing theory, research, and practice is discussed.

Purpose
The impact of workplace spirituality on organizational performance has continued to draw the attention of scholars and practitioners. Despite this enhanced attention, little is known about its the impact on academic performance. Addressing this gap in research, the purpose of this study is to empirically examine the impact of spirituality at workplace on academic performance among private sector higher education faculties in Delhi NCR.
Design/methodology/approach
This study outlines the existing literature on workplace spirituality and academic performance and its relationship. The scale created by Petchsawang and Duchon (2009) has been used to measure workplace spirituality, whereas academic performance of faculties was measured by the scale created by Abubakar et al. (2018). Pearson correlation and linear regression have been used to depict the degree of relation and impact of spirituality on academic performance.
Findings
This study provides evidence that by practicing workplace spirituality, the performance of higher education faculties can be positively and significantly impacted. The result reflects that in the presence of compassion, mindfulness, meaningful work and transcendence, the academic organizational performance of higher education institutes is improved as there will be an enhancement in their academic reputation, employability of the graduate students, research work, internationalization, Nobel-prized and field medals, research grant, resources, infrastructure and community services.
Research limitations/implications
The results of this study are subject to certain limitations, which can be addressed in future studies. Only four dimensions of workplace spirituality, i.e. compassion, mindfulness, meaningful life and transcendence, are taken into consideration. Also, the impact has only be studied on academic performance of higher education institutions. The results of this study cannot be used in a generalized context as the framework of this study is based on higher education faculties in Delhi NCR.
Practical implications
The findings of this study would be a roadmap for higher education institutions or their faculties to improve performance with the assistance of spirituality at workplace.
Social implications
Retention of academic personnel is critically necessary so that the excellence of higher education is maintained. It is the need of the hour for these educational institutions to be more focused on improving the teaching staff efficiency. This is made possible through the development of an atmosphere that installs spirituality. The empirical findings of this research will enable academics as well as managers to understand how and to what degree faculties experience spirituality at workplace and its association with different outcomes.
Originality/value
India's higher education higher education system is the third largest in the world, next to the USA and China. India's higher education system has expanded steadily, and India has over 1,000 universities as of 2020. Workplace spirituality for academicians is under-researched and neglected by organizations. It may further benefit those interested in employment learning.
