Abstract

Purpose

To investigate how an individual's value structure influences his/her attitudes toward others who are dissimilar and the moderating effects of age, gender, race, and religiosity on this relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

A sample of 165 respondents completed the 56‐item Schwartz Value Survey (SVS), which measures the four value types of openness to change, self‐transcendence, conservation, and self‐enhancement, and the 15‐item Miville‐Guzman Universality‐Diversity Scale Short (M‐GUDS‐S), which measures diversity attitudes. The relationships between the variables were explored using hierarchical regression.

Findings

Respondents who scored higher on the values of openness to change and self‐ transcendence had more positive diversity attitudes than those who scored lower. Respondents who scored higher on self‐enhancement had less positive diversity attitudes than those who scored lower. The prediction that those who score higher on conservation would have less positive diversity attitudes was not supported. Age, gender, and race were found to interact with values to predict diversity attitudes. None of the interaction effects for religiosity was significant.

Originality/value

This paper provides evidence of the predictive strength of an individual's value structure on their attitudes towards diversity. More specifically, this paper shows that the impact that a person's values have on his/her attitudes towards diversity is moderated by his/her age, race, and gender. The results suggest that diversity training needs to be more targeted and designed to take into consideration the values, age, gender, and race of the trainees.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to extend the attitudinal approach to entrepreneurial intentions by using a structural analysis to explore overlooked personal values as the antecedents of entrepreneurial attitude. Based on the widely adopted value system proposed by Schwartz, this study argues that while one cluster of personal values is positively correlated with entrepreneurial attitude that leads to entrepreneurial intention, another cluster of personal values is negatively correlated with entrepreneurial attitude.

Design/methodology/approach

Questionnaire responses obtained from a sample of 276 MBA were analyzed using structural equation models to examine the influences of values on entrepreneurial intentions via entrepreneurial attitude.

Findings

The results of this study demonstrate that personal values of self-direction, stimulation, achievement, and universalism are all positively correlated with entrepreneurial attitude, which together constitute a comfort zone for entrepreneurship, whereas values in the opposite end of the circumplex including benevolence, tradition, conformity, security, and power are negatively correlated with entrepreneurial attitude. The values that discourage the formation of an entrepreneurial attitude also counter the positive effect of entrepreneurial attitude on intention, making the relationship between entrepreneurial attitude and intention contingent upon value conflicts.

Originality/value

This study regards entrepreneurship as a career development and contributes to the entrepreneurship study by differentiating the influences of a vital construct, i.e., personal values, which should not be regarded as a universalism. The value circumplex with a comfort and discomfort zone developed by this study can serve as a platform to help build the view on entrepreneurial intentions in terms of personal values.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to apply complexity theory tenets to deepen understanding, explanation and prediction of how configurations of national cultures and need motivations influence national entrepreneurial and innovation behavior and nations’ quality-of-life (QOL). Also, the study examines whether or not high national ethical behavior is sufficient for indicating nations high in quality-of-life.

Design/methodology/approach

Applying core tenets of complexity theory, the study constructs asymmetric, case-based (nations), explanations and predictive models of cultures’ consequences (via Schwartz’s seven value dimensions) and implicit need motivations (via McClelland’s three need motivations) indicating national entrepreneur and innovation activities and subsequent national quality-of-life and ethical behavior. The study includes testing configurational models empirically for predictive accuracy. The empirical examination is for a set of data for 24 nations in Asia, Europe, North and South America and the South Pacific.

Findings

The findings confirm the usefulness of applying complexity theory to learn how culture and motivation configurations support versus have negative consequences on nations’ entrepreneurship, innovation and human well-being. Nurturing of entrepreneur activities supports the nurturing of enterprise innovation activity and their joint occurrence indicates nations achieving high quality-of-life. The findings advance the perspective that different sets of cultural value configurations indicate nations high versus low in entrepreneur and innovation activities.

Practical implications

High entrepreneur activities without high innovation activity are insufficient for achieving high national quality-of-life. Achieving high ethical behavior supports high quality-of-life.

Originality/value

This study is one of the first to apply complexity theory tenets in the field of entrepreneurship research. The study here advances the perspective that case-based asymmetric modeling of recipes is necessary to explain and predict entrepreneur activities and outcomes rather than examining whether variable relationships are statistically significant from zero.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on the cybernetic agency theory of part 1, the paper creates a parallel theory to Maruyama's Mindscape theory called mindset theory, relying on the three-trait organisational value system of Sagiv and Schwartz that arises from extensive theoretical and empirical work on cultural values originally undertaken by Shalom Schwartz. The derived normative personality types are embedded into a cultural system and interacting with a social system. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the paper deals with Sorokin's theory of the immanent cultural dynamics arising from swings between more sensate or more ideational culture. For characterisation of interaction with the social environment, the paper relies on the dramatist/patterner trait from empirical work by Shotwell et al., which acts as an attractor of agency behaviour. Thus, the paper designs a five trait agency model, with one trait that serves as an attractor of agency behaviour, three formative normative personality traits, and one social trait that directs the how of behaviour.

Findings

The Sagiv-Schwartz mindset types reveal the missing four types of the Maruyama-universe, as sought by Boje. Sagiv-Schwartz mindset types create generic transparency and a theoretical and empirical base for the selection of mindset meta-types. Through its perfect match with Mindset Agency Theory as developed in part 1, this research creates a structural model that has the potential to distinguish between normal and pathological personalities within the same framework.

Research limitations/implications

The modelling approach can be applied to social, economic and political situations, with the likelihood of anticipating the likely behaviour of social collectives like durable organisation and/or nation states. Analytical and empirical application in different contexts is yet to be provided.

Practical implications

The paper sets up a means by which patterns of behaviour can be analysed in different organisational or national contexts. Empirical analysis based on this theory has the potential to identify normal states and shifts away from normal states of social systems, which may shift into stages of tension and crises, and/or mobilise forces directed towards paradigm changes in social systems.

Originality/value

The paper draws on earlier work undertaken in the last few years by the same authors, who in a new way are pursuing new directions and extensions of that earlier research.

Purpose

The importance of work design to organizational engagement and firm performance is increasingly recognized in management scholarship. For international business, a majority of variation in work design based on national cultures is addressed through cross-cultural management scholarship. However, there is a paucity of qualitative research on the influences international business human resource managers face for work design in the intercultural environment of overseas subsidiaries. The purpose of this interpretivist study was to examine the lived experience of overseas subsidiaries’ local managers to surface a more nuanced understanding of their expectations and related implications for work.

Design/methodology/approach

Empirical research was conducted through semistructured in-depth interviews with senior managers of subsidiaries of Japanese MNCs in USA, Thailand and India.

Findings

The findings of the study develop and extend on prior cross-cultural management scholarship on world cultural clusters revealing changed expectations of work in intercultural work environments as instantiated by Japanese MNCs.

Social implications

Through engaging work design, international businesses can contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 8 that pertains to decent work.

Originality/value

The study adds to extant understanding of the work design antecedent to engagement by broadening to intercultural environment impacts understanding facilitated by empirical lived experience data and suggesting a modification to extant theory. This study pioneers in taking world cultural clusters as the field for evaluating data.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to uncover the extent to which cultural traits may explain the puzzling international divergence in COVID-19 outcomes, and how those traits interact with state action to produce compliance with pandemic health policy.

Design/methodology/approach

A theoretical framework illustrates the surprising possibility that culture and state action may not reinforce each other but rather act as substitutes in eliciting anti-pandemic behavior. This possibility is tested empirically in two specifications: a cross-sectional regression that includes several novel COVID-related measures, and a panel model that controls for contemporaneous disease burden. Across these models, we use the measures of national culture developed by Hofstede (1984) and a newer metric developed by Schwartz (1990).

Findings

Individualism and egalitarianism have a positive effect on disease prevalence, while cultural heterogeneity was associated with a more robust public health response. Consistent with our model, we find that culture and state action served as substitutes in motivating compliance with COVID-19 policy.

Practical implications

The results of this study imply that culture and state interact in determining the effectiveness of public health measures aimed at combating COVID-19; these results recommend culturally aware state intervention when combating pandemics.

Originality/value

This study offers several new contributions. First, it proposes a model to help contextualize the empirical analysis. Second, it examines a wider range of traits than previous studies, including cultural homogeneity and the Schwartz variables. Third, it employs a richer econometric specification that explores the interaction between state and culture in a panel context.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify the personal characteristics and individual values of Venezuelan low-income entrepreneurs, according to the theoretical framework of the Schwartz model.

Design/methodology/approach

A stratified probabilistic sample of 416 individuals was selected from a database of Bangente’s clients, who received microcredits between 1999 and 2016, in the Capital District of Venezuela. The Portrait Value Questionnaire (Schwartz, 2003; Peiró and Palencia, 2009) was applied to measure the values of power, self-direction, stimulation and achievement. The locus of control was measured (Schjoedt and Shaver, 2012) and information was collected on some personal variables. An analysis of hierarchical clusters was conducted to group clients with similar characteristics, as well as a discriminant analysis, to characterize the groups obtained.

Findings

The selected Schwartz values, the locus of control and personal characteristics (such as educational level, age and gender) proved to be efficient in discriminating between four groups or profiles of low-income entrepreneurs: those “Focused on progress through effort,” “Independent and ambitious young people,” those “Focused on power and achievement” and those who were “Indifferent.” The results of the cluster analysis were validated using discriminant analysis, which identified the variables with the greatest impact for the characterization of each group. The coefficients of the discriminant functions would allow the classification of a new individual requesting a microcredit into one of the groups obtained. This is a proposal to complement the selection process mechanisms currently used to decide whether or not to grant loans, which must be validated in conclusive studies.

Research limitations/implications

The results cannot be generalized until the study is replicated in representative samples in other entities of the microfinance sector.

Originality/value

The main contribution of this work is the integration of individual values in the profile description of low-income entrepreneurs and in the use of statistical strategies such as cluster analysis and discriminant function. The nature of the study is exploratory: the development of this line of research can guide future decisions about which clients (according to their values, personal characteristics and locus of control) could receive their financial support. When considering these non-traditional variables in the banking context, the aim is to enrich our knowledge about low-income entrepreneurs.

Propósito

El objetivo de este trabajo es identificar cuáles son las características personales y los valores individuales de los emprendedores populares venezolanos, según el marco teórico del modelo de Schwartz.

Diseño/Metodología/Enfoque

Se seleccionó una muestra probabilística estratificada de 416 individuos, de una base de datos de clientes de Bangente beneficiarios de microcréditos entre 1999 y 2016, del Distrito Capital de Venezuela. Se aplicó el Portrait Value Questionnarie (PVQ) (Schwartz, 2003; Peiró y Palencia, 2009) para medir los valores poder, autodirección, estimulación y logro. Se midió el locus de control (Schjoedt y Shaver, 2012) y se recopiló información sobre algunas variables personales. Se llevó a cabo un análisis de conglomerados jerárquicos para agrupar clientes con características similares y un análisis discriminante para caracterizar los grupos obtenidos.

Resultados

Los valores de Schwartz seleccionados, el locus de control y las características personales (como nivel educativo, edad y género) mostraron ser eficientes para discriminar de forma significativa entre cuatro grupos o perfiles de emprendedores populares: “orientados al progreso por esfuerzo,” “jóvenes independientes y ambiciosos,” “focalizados en el poder y logro” e “indiferentes.” Los resultados del análisis de conglomerados fueron validados por análisis discriminante, que permitió identificar las variables de mayor impacto para la caracterización de cada grupo. Los coeficientes de las funciones discriminantes permitirían clasificar a un nuevo individuo solicitante de microcréditos en alguno de los grupos obtenidos; esta es una propuesta complementaria a los mecanismos de selección actualmente utilizados para decidir la concesión de los créditos, que deberá ser validada en estudios concluyentes.

Limitaciones de la investigación/implicaciones

No se pueden generalizar los resultados hasta que el estudio se replique en muestras representativas en otras entidades del sector microfinanciero.

Originalidad/valor

La mayor contribución de este trabajo está en la integración de los valores individuales en la descripción del perfil de los emprendedores populares y en el uso de estrategias estadísticas como el análisis de conglomerados y la función discriminante. La naturaleza del estudio es exploratoria: el desarrollo de esta línea de investigación puede orientar en el futuro las decisiones acerca de a cuáles clientes (de acuerdo con sus valores, características personales y locus de control) podrían dirigir su apoyo financiero. Al considerar estas variables no tradicionales en el contexto de la banca, se pretende enriquecer el conocimiento sobre los emprendedores populares.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between entrepreneurs’ personal values and corporate social responsibility (CSR) orientations among small- and medium-sized enterprises in a developing country, Zambia.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected through questionnaires. Two linear regression models were used to test the hypotheses.

Findings

Self-transcendence values have a significant positive influence on socially oriented CSR but do not influence environmentally oriented CSR. Self-enhancement values do not affect social and environmental CSR orientations. Conservation values have a marginally positive influence on environmentally oriented CSR but no influence on socially oriented CSR. Finally, openness to change has a significant positive influence on environmentally orientated CSR but no influence on socially oriented CSR.

Research limitations/implications

The limitations of this study relates to the sector from which the sample was drawn, other predictors of CSR orientations, use of cross-sectional data, and the replication of this study to validate its findings.

Practical implications

The findings inform policy-makers, scholars, educators, and regulators on the importance of aligning personal values with environmental and social concerns, thereby influencing entrepreneurs’ CSR orientations for the well-being of society and the natural environment.

Originality/value

This paper shows the influence of personal values on CSR orientations among entrepreneurs in a hardly researched Sub-Saharan Africa country.

Abstract

Purpose

In today’s competitive environment, understanding employee well-being and work engagement (WE) is crucial. This study explores the relationship between values, well-being and WE within positive organizational behavior (POB). The research aims to provide insights for promoting employee well-being and enhancing WE.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a cross-sectional approach, three hundred and seventy-two teachers from higher education institutes in India participated by completing questionnaires. Covariance-based structural equation modeling (CB-SEM) was employed to examine the mediation effect.

Findings

Human values i.e. benevolence (BE) and universalism (UN) significantly impacted teachers' WE. These relationships were mediated by positive emotions (PE), negative emotions (NE) and satisfaction with life (SWL). Interestingly, UN exhibited a positive relationship with PE and SWL and a negative relationship with NE. These findings contradict existing theories and may be attributed to India’s cultural aspects, particularly the concept of karma orientation.

Research limitations/implications

The quantitative results obtained through CB-SEM could be complemented by future qualitative studies. Employing longitudinal research might yield different results. Generalizing the findings to other populations requires caution.

Practical implications

Institutions should prioritize human values in teacher recruitment and development to improve engagement. Promoting PE, managing NE and enhancing SWL can boost WE. Future research should explore mediation with other variables and use longitudinal studies to understand cultural impact and intervention strategies.

Originality/value

The study contributes to knowledge on WE within positive organizational behavior by examining BE and UN. Additionally, exploring the mediating effect of PE, NE and SWL adds further value.
