Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to describe precisely the wind speed regime and characteristics of a runway of an International Airport, the north-western part of Turkey.

Design methodology approach

Three different probability distributions, namely, Inverse Gaussian (IG), widely used two-parameter Weibull and Rayleigh distributions in the literature, are used to represent wind regime and characteristics of the runway. The parameters of each distribution are estimated by the pattern search (PS)-based heuristic algorithm. The results are compared with the other three methods-based numerical computation, including maximum-likelihood method, moment method (MoM) and power density method, respectively. To evaluate the fitting performance of the proposed method, several statistical goodness tests including the mostly used root mean square error (RMSE) and chi-squared (X2) are conducted.

Findings

In the light of the statistical goodness tests, the results of the IG-based PS attain better performance than the classical Weibull and Rayleigh functions. Both the RMSE and X2 values achieved by the IG-based PS method lower than that of Weibull and Rayleigh distributions. It exhibits a better fitting performance with 0.0074 for RMSE and 0.58 × 10−4 for X2 for probability density function (PDF) in 2012 and with RMSE of 0.0084 and X2 of 0.74 × 10−4 for PDF in 2013. As regard the cumulative density function of the measured wind data, the best results are found to be Weibull-based PS with RMSE of 0.0175 and X2 of 3.25 × 10−4 in 2012. However, Weibull-based MoM shows more excellent ability in 2013, with RMSE of 0.0166 and X2 of 2.94 × 10−4. Consequently, it is considered that the results of this study confirm that IG-based PS with the lowest error value can a good choice to model more accurately and characterize the wind speed profile of the airport.

Practical implications

This paper presents a realistic point of view regarding the wind regime and characteristics of an airport. This study may cast the light on researchers, policymakers, policy analysts and airport designers intending to investigate the wind profile of a runway at the airport in the world and also provide a significant pathway on how to determine the wind distribution of the runway.

Originality value

Instead of the well-known Weibull distribution for the representing of wind distribution in the literature, in this paper, IG distribution is used. Furthermore, the suitability of IG to represent the wind distribution is validated when compared with two-parameter Weibull and Rayleigh distributions. Besides, the performance and efficiency of PS have been evaluated by comparing it with other methods.

Abstract

Reliability engineers must not only consider the consumption of energy, capital and material resources, but also seek more economic means of completing experiments effectively. This study derives formulae for computing ratios of expected type‐II censoring times and expected complete sampling times when the lifetime adheres to two‐parameter Pareto and Rayleigh distributions. Utilizing such formulae allows the construction of tables providing information about how much experiment time can be saved by employing a type‐II censoring plan instead of a complete sampling plan. Engineers can employ the proposed tables to determine the censoring number, the initial sample size and the other relevant parameters for reducing the total experiment time. Illustrative examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed procedure.

Abstract

Purpose

In this paper, a mixture of exponential and Rayleigh distributions in the proportions α and 1 − α and all the parameters in the mixture distribution are estimated based on fuzzy data.

Design/methodology/approach

The methods such as maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) and method of moments (MOM) are applied for estimation. Fuzzy data of triangular fuzzy numbers and Gaussian fuzzy numbers for different sample sizes are considered to illustrate the resulting estimation and to compare these methods. In addition to this, the obtained results are compared with existing results for crisp data in the literature.

Findings

The application of fuzziness in the data will be very useful to obtain precise results in the presence of vagueness in data. Mean square errors (MSEs) of the resulting estimators are computed using crisp data and fuzzy data. On comparison, in terms of MSEs, it is observed that maximum likelihood estimators perform better than moment estimators.

Originality/value

Classical methods of obtaining estimators of unknown parameters fail to give realistic estimators since these methods assume the data collected to be crisp or exact. Normally, such case of precise data is not always feasible and realistic in practice. Most of them will be incomplete and sometimes expressed in linguistic variables. Such data can be handled by generalizing the classical inference methods using fuzzy set theory.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to directly link information technology (IT) education with real-world phenomena.

Design/methodology/approach

The selected objectives are achieved by modeling line of sight (LOS) and nonline of sight (NLOS) mobile channels using corresponding distributions. Within the described experiments, students verify whether modeled generators generate random variables accordingly to the selected distribution. The results of observations are directly compared with theoretical expectations. The methodology was evaluated by students via questionnaires.

Findings

The results show that the proposed methodology can help graduate or undergraduate students better comprehend lectured material from mobile communications or mathematical statistics.

Originality/value

The hands on experience using the EMONA system make the approach original.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper introduces group chain acceptance sampling plans (GChSP) for a truncated life test at preassumed time by using the minimum angle method. The proposed method is an approach, where both risks associated with acceptance sampling, namely consumers’ and producer’s risks, are considered. Currently, the GChSP only considers the consumer's risk (CR), which means the current plan only protects the consumer not the producer since it does not take into account the producer's risk (PR) at all.

Design/methodology/approach

There are six phases involved when designing the GChSP, which are (1) identifying the design parameters, (2) implementing the operating procedures, (3) deriving the probability of lot acceptance, (4) deriving the probability of zero or one defective, (5) deriving the proportion defective and (6) measuring the performance.

Findings

The findings show that the optimal number of groups obtained satisfies both parties, i.e. consumer and producer, compared to the established GChSP, where the number of group calculated only satisfies the consumer not the producer.

Research limitations/implications

There are three limitations identified for this paper. The first limitation is the distribution, in which this paper only proposes the GChSP for generalized exponential distribution. It can be extended to different distribution available in the literature. The second limitation is that the paper uses binomial distribution when deriving the probability of lot acceptance. Also, it can be derived by using different distributions such as weighted binomial distribution, Poisson distribution and weighted Poisson distribution. The final limitation is that the paper adopts the mean as a quality parameter. For the quality parameter, researchers have other options such as the median and the percentile.

Practical implications

The proposed GChSP should provide an alternative for the industrial practitioners and for the inspection activity, as they have more options of the sampling plans before they finally decide to select one.

Originality/value

This is the first paper to propose the minimum angle method for the GChSP, where both risks, CR and PR, are considered. The GChSP has been developed since 2015, but all the researchers only considered the CR in their papers.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop an extensive economic production quantity (EPQ) model on the basis of previous research. Considering an imperfect three‐state production process, this paper makes contributions to an integrated model combining conceptions of quality loss and design of control chart based on EPQ model. The objective is to minimize the total production cost with the determination of EPQ and design parameters of control chart subjected to quality loss and other process costs.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, imperfect process is defined as a three‐state process, and the quality cost corresponding to each state contributes to the eventual total expected cost formulation. Control chart is used to monitor the shift from the target value within whole process and its control limits are set to be related to the quality cost.

Findings

The proposed integrated model conforms more closely to the real situation of production process considering the process shift as a random variable.

Practical implications

Numerical computation and sensitivity analysis through a case study are presented to demonstrate the applications of the model.

Originality/value

Few research efforts investigate an integrated model considering EPQ, control chart and quality loss simultaneously. In particular, compared with the former researches, the process shift, due to which the quality cost incurs, is considered as a random variable in this paper.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to find an accurate, efficient and easy-to-implement point estimate method (PEM) for the statistical moments of random systems.

Design/methodology/approach

First, by the theoretical and numerical analysis, the approximate reference variables for the frequently used nine types of random variables are obtained; then by combining with the dimension-reduction method (DRM), a new method which consists of four sub-methods is proposed; and finally, several examples are investigated to verify the characteristics of the proposed method.

Findings

Two types of reference variables for the frequently used nine types of variables are proposed, and four sub-methods for estimating the moments of responses are presented by combining with the univariate and bivariate DRM.

Research limitations/implications

In this paper, the number of nodes of one-dimensional integrals is determined subjectively and empirically; therefore, determining the number of nodes rationally is still a challenge.

Originality/value

Through the linear transformation, the optimal reference variables of random variables are presented, and a PEM based on the linear transformation is proposed which is efficient and easy to implement. By the numerical method, the quasi-optimal reference variables are given, which is the basis of the proposed PEM based on the quasi-optimal reference variables, together with high efficiency and ease of implementation.

Abstract

Purpose

The problem is to devise a life‐test acceptance procedure of an electrical item that has a Weibull failure distribution with an increasing hazard rate. The test‐bed facility has some constraints on the number of test samples and testing time.

Design/methodology/approach

The life‐test plan is obtained using censoring of experiments and the properties of order statistics. In this article, the author has derived expressions for order statistics and their moments for some commonly used hazard‐rate functions; for example, constant, linearly increasing, exponentially increasing, power function, etc. and the same is used in planning the life‐test acceptance procedure.

Findings

Results and findings are discussed in full. It is postulated that further research in this direction will definitely bring some fruitful results that have immense importance in the field of reliability analysis and life‐testing experiments.

Originality/value

The same methodology can be adopted for devising life‐test acceptance procedure using censoring of experiments.

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to review the existing fatigue and vibration-based structural health monitoring techniques and highlight the advantages of combining both approaches.

Design/methodology/approach

Fatigue monitoring requires a fatigue model of the material, the stresses at specific points of the structure, a cycle counting technique and a fatigue damage criterion. Firstly, this paper reviews existing structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques, addresses their principal classifications and presents the main characteristics of each technique, with a particular emphasis on modal-based methodologies. Automated modal analysis, damage detection and localisation techniques are also reviewed. Fatigue monitoring is an SHM technique which evaluate the structural fatigue damage in real time. Stress estimation techniques and damage accumulation models based on the S-N field and the Miner rule are also reviewed in this paper.

Findings

A vast amount of research has been carried out in the field of SHM. The literature about fatigue calculation, fatigue testing, fatigue modelling and remaining fatigue life is also extensive. However, the number of publications related to monitor the fatigue process is scarce. A methodology to perform real-time structural fatigue monitoring, in both time and frequency domains, is presented.

Originality/value

Fatigue monitoring can be combined (applied simultaneously) with other vibration-based SHM techniques, which might significantly increase the reliability of the monitoring techniques.

Abstract

Purpose

The non-stationary operational wind loads vary in time and site and has remarkable effect on wind turbine drive train. The purpose of this paper is to determine the effects of wind class 3 and 7 on the life of wind turbine drive train. The two-wind class 3 and 7 are described by average wind speed and weight factor and effects of two variables on wind energy generation and wind turbine drive train studied.

Design/methodology/approach

The load distribution method is used to calculate stress range cycles for wind class 3 and 7. To determine the rise of force on wind turbine drive train, the load cycle method is proposed. The fatigue damage model is studied with respect to influence of different wind speeds and wind shear factor and then results analysed accordingly. Also sensitivity analysis has been carried out to assess the percentage of drop of energy generation and rise of tangential force for wind class 3 and 7. Linear fit method is used to determine the inclination of wind variation and wind shear of wind class 3 and 7. In this regard, two practical wind sites fall under the wind class 3 and 7 and 1.5 MW wind turbine have been taken in to account.

Findings

The results showed that the average rise of force on wind turbine drive train is 37.5% which can influence the drop in energy 34.7% for wind class 3. Similarly, the results of wind class 7 are showing that the average rise in force and drop in energy found to be 49.05% and 51.16%, respectively. The wind class 7 have higher tendency of wind fluctuations and weight factor that can cause a damage to wind turbine drive train components. The results showed that when wind speed increases to rated power 11.5 m/s the damages occurred and remain steady. Similarly, when weight factor increased from 0.18 to onwards the damage occurred. The increased wind loads increased the tangential loads on the wind turbine decreased life of the gearbox.

Originality/value

The results of study suggest that wind turbine should be design according to site specific wind environment for maximum energy generation and lowers the wind loads on the drive train component.
