Abstract
Purpose
Central to the fit concept is that congruence between individual and environmental attributes leads to improved outcomes. However, when discussing fit, researchers often describe congruence as alignment between distinctive or unique individual and environmental attributes. We suggest that current approaches to examining fit do not adequately account for this assumption of distinctiveness because they fail to consider normative expectations and preferences. As such, we propose an alternative theoretical and methodological approach to conceptualizing and measuring fit.
Design/methodology/approach
We introduce the normative theory of fit, outline how researchers can decompose fit into distinctive and normative components and identify areas for future research.
Findings
Management researchers have largely ignored the importance of decomposing fit into distinctive and normative components. This shortcoming necessitates additional research to ensure a more accurate understanding of fit and its relationship with outcomes.
Originality/value
We provide a clarification and critical examination of a pervasive construct in the field of management by introducing the normative theory of fit, identifying areas where researchers can employ this theoretical lens and suggesting a reevaluation of the importance placed on differentiation that is traditionally employed in practice.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to examine the interplay between person–environment fit (PE fit), empowerment and leader–member exchange (LMX) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Design/methodology/approach
The final sample consisted of 733 respondents collected randomly from various business sectors in the UAE. Data was analysed and tested for moderation using Smart-PLS.
Findings
This study’s results show LMX to be a negative moderator. They reveal that LMX plays a crucial role in the relationship between PE Fit and job satisfaction, particularly when the fit is poor. Moreover, LMX was found to be a significant negative moderator between empowerment and satisfaction, highlighting its importance when empowerment is lacking.
Research limitations/implications
It is important to note that the current study is cross-sectional, which means it cannot establish causation. Only a pure experimental design can provide such conclusive evidence. This limitation should be considered when interpreting the findings.
Practical implications
This research highlights a significant finding in turbulent times when PE fit and empowering practices are often lacking: LMX can play a compensatory role. This insight can be invaluable for human resources managers, offering a practical solution to maintaining employee satisfaction in challenging times.
Social implications
The positive impact of enhanced job satisfaction and improved work relationships extends beyond the organization to stakeholders and society at large.
Originality/value
This research fills a gap in the existing literature by investigating the interaction between the PE fit variable and other variables, such as LMX. This novel approach offers a new perspective for HR managers, potentially enabling them to enhance their strategies for improving employee satisfaction.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to propose a robust kinematic controller based on sliding mode theory designed to solve the trajectory tracking problem and also the formation control using the leader–follower strategy for nonholonomic differential-drive wheeled mobile robots with a PD dynamic controller.
Design/methodology/approach
To deal with classical sliding mode control shortcomings, such as the chattering and the requirement of a priori knowledge of the limits of the effects of disturbances, an immune regulation mechanism-inspired approach is proposed to adjust the control effort magnitude adaptively. A simple fuzzy boundary layer method and an adaptation law for the immune portion gain online adjustment are also considered. An obstacle avoidance reactive strategy is proposed for the leader robot, given the importance of the leader in the formation control structure.
Findings
To verify the adaptability of the controller, obstacles are distributed along the reference trajectory, and the simulation and experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed controller, which was capable of generating control signals avoiding chattering, compensating for disturbances and avoiding the obstacles.
Originality/value
The proposed design stands out for the ability to adapt in a case involving obstacle avoidance, trajectory tracking and leader–follower formation control by nonholonomic robots under the incidence of uncertainties and disturbances and also considering that the immune-based control provided chattering mitigation by adjusting the magnitude of the control effort, with adaptability improved by a simple integral-type adaptive law derived by Lyapunov stability analysis.

Abstract
The authors propose to estimate a varying coefficient panel data model with different smoothing variables and fixed effects using a two-step approach. The pilot step estimates the varying coefficients by a series method. We then use the pilot estimates to perform a one-step backfitting through local linear kernel smoothing, which is shown to be oracle efficient in the sense of being asymptotically equivalent to the estimate knowing the other components of the varying coefficients. In both steps, the authors remove the fixed effects through properly constructed weights. The authors obtain the asymptotic properties of both the pilot and efficient estimators. The Monte Carlo simulations show that the proposed estimator performs well. The authors illustrate their applicability by estimating a varying coefficient production frontier using a panel data, without assuming distributions of the efficiency and error terms.

Abstract
Purpose
The primary focus of this study is to tackle a critical industry issue concerning energy inefficiency. This is achieved through an investigation into enhancing heat transfer in solar radiation phenomena on a curved surface. The problem formulation of governing equations includes the combined effects of thermal relaxation, Newtonian heating, radiation mechanism, and Darcy-Forchheimer to enhance the uniqueness of the model. This research employs the Cattaneo–Christov heat theory model to investigate the thermal flux via utilizing the above-mentioned phenomenon with a purpose of advancing thermal technology. A mixture of silicon dioxide (SiO_2)\ and Molybdenum disulfide (MoS_2) is considered for the nanoparticle’s thermal propagation in base solvent propylene glycol. The simulation of the modeled equations is solved using the Shifted Legendre collocation scheme (SLCS). The findings show that, the solar radiation effects boosted the heating performance of the hybrid nanofluid. Furthermore, the heat transmission progress increases against the curvature and thermal relaxation parameter.

Abstract
Purpose
With the recognition that generating economic growth is not the same as sustaining it, the challenge to catch-up and growth literature is discerning between these processes. Recent research suggests that the decline in the frequency of “shrinking” episodes is more important for long-term development than higher growth rates. By using a framework centred around social capabilities, this study aims to investigate the effects of income inequality and poverty on economic shrinking frequency, as opposed to previous literature that has exclusively had a growth focus. The aim is to investigate how and why some societies might be more resilient to economic shrinking.
Design/methodology/approach
The research is a quantitative study, and the authors build a longitudinal data set including 23 developing countries throughout 42 years to test the paper’s purpose. This study uses country and period fixed-effects specifications as well as cross-sectional graphical representations to investigate the relationship between proxies of economic inclusivity and the frequency of shrinking episodes.
Findings
The authors demonstrate that while inclusive societies are more resilient to shrinking overall, it is changes in poverty levels, but not changes in income inequality, that appear to be correlated with economic shrinking frequency. Inequality, while still an important element to explain countries’ growth potential as an initial condition, does not seem to make the sample more resilient to shrinking. The authors conclude that the mechanisms in which poverty and inequality are correlated with the catch-up process must run through different channels. Ultimately, processes that explain growth may intersect but not always overlap with the ones that explain resilience to shrinking.
Originality/value
The need for inclusive growth in long-term development has been championed for decades, yet inclusion has seldom been explored from the shrinking perspective. Though poverty reduction is already an important mainstream political objective, this paper differentiates itself by providing an alternate viewpoint of why this is important. Income inequality could have more of an economic growth limiting effect, while poverty reduction could be required to build resilience to economic shrinking. Developing countries will need both growth and resilience to shrinking, to catch-up with higher-income economies, which policymakers might need to balance carefully.

Purpose
From the buying club’s perspective, the transfer of a player can be interpreted as an investment from which the club expects uncertain future benefits. This paper aims to develop a decision-oriented approach for the valuation of football players that could theoretically help clubs determine the subjective value of investing in a player to assess its potential economic advantage.
Design/methodology/approach
We build on a semi-investment-theoretical risk-value model and elaborate an approach that can be applied in imperfect markets under uncertainty. Furthermore, we illustrate the valuation process with a numerical example based on fictitious data. Due to this explicitly intended decision support, our approach differs fundamentally from a large part of the literature, which is empirically based and attempts to explain observable figures through various influencing factors.
Findings
We propose a semi-investment-theoretical valuation approach that is based on a two-step model, namely, a first valuation at the club level and a final calculation to determine the decision value for an individual player. In contrast to the previous literature, we do not rely on an econometric framework that attempts to explain observable past variables but rather present a general, forward-looking decision model that can support managers in their investment decisions.
Originality/value
This approach is the first to show managers how to make an economically rational investment decision by determining the maximum payable price. Nevertheless, there is no normative requirement for the decision-maker. The club will obviously have to supplement the calculus with nonfinancial objectives. Overall, our paper can constitute a first step toward decision-oriented player valuation and for theoretical comparison with practical investment decisions in football clubs, which obviously take into account other specific sports team decisions.
