Abstract

States that the use of information technologies in the provision of information and communication in libraries has had a far‐reaching effect on librarians and library users. Points out that the provision of information can be made more effective and efficient with the use of electronic information, and examines the extent to which electronic information sources have been used in Nigerian libraries. Reveals that there is nothing to show a widespread or intensive use of electronic information in Nigerian libraries. Identifies some problems facing the application and use of electronic information sources and proffers suggestions on how to overcome them.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to report the survey on the use of online tools and techniques for cataloguing and classification in Nigerian libraries.

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire was designed to elicit information from librarians on pertinent areas relating to the use of online tools for processing library resources.

Findings

The results of the survey reveal a high level of awareness among librarians in Nigeria about the benefits that could be derived in the use of online tools for cataloguing and classification processes. The study further reveals the need for continuing education programmes for cataloguers for effective use of the tools. The study shows that the use of online tools has advantages over manual methods. Librarians perceived the method to be useful and easy to use. The paper reveals ICT infrastructural facilities as major constraints facing libraries in the use of online tools. One of the expectations at the onset of the follow‐up study was that most of the problems identified with the use of the online tools in the Redeemer's University library study would not be different from the challenges facing other libraries. The results of this study have proved this to be true.

Practical implications

The conclusion rests on the need for an intensive continuing education programme to teach the skills required for online operations and the provision of web‐driven facilities in Nigerian libraries.

Originality/value

The paper provides information on libraries' awareness on the use of online methods for processing library resources, their efficiency and attitude of librarians to such tools. The paper shows that libraries in developing countries like Nigeria should intensify efforts to close the gap between them and those in the developed countries in terms of ICT literacy.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to report the use of ICT by cataloguers at a private university library in Nigeria.

Design/methodology/approach

A description of the procedures and processes undertaken is given.

Findings

The description of the processes involved in the use of ICT by cataloguers reveals the effectiveness and efficiency of online searches for the purpose of cataloguing and classification. A few were identified. The study shows the potential offered by the use of ICT, which libraries in developing nations – and indeed Nigeria – have not fully embraced. The paper reveals the low level of ICT literacy in libraries in Nigeria and concludes that this is a result of the deficiency in the practical training of librarians in the use of ICT in Nigerian library schools.

Practical implications

The conclusion is that there is an urgent need for librarians in developing nations to gain proficiency in the use of ICT as a tool in libraries.

Originality/value

The paper provides information on the level of ICT use for cataloguing and classification in a private university library in Nigeria. This experience shows the importance of why libraries in developing countries should address the desired level of ICT literacy among their librarians.

Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to report on research that examined the perceptions of selected heads of Nigerian libraries about how gossip can assist in the management of libraries of all types. A survey was used to collect data from 40 heads of libraries in the south-west region of Nigeria. The questionnaire contained questions that related to the issues being investigated. The 30 responses (75%) received were processed, analyzed, and the results are presented herein. The study revealed that gossip has indeed helped library management in Nigeria. The heads of libraries reported that they derived some benefits from gossip which helped in decision making. Most respondents agreed that gossip might get out of hand, but said it should be monitored to be used as a positive tool in library management. While the study is limited to 30 libraries, it has applications to similar libraries across Nigeria, and even in other countries. This research provides a better understanding of the reasons why library managers and others should pay attention to gossip and to those behind it because of their influence. This study adds to the body of knowledge about gossip in libraries.

Abstract

The numbers and prices of journals have been increasing while library budgets have remained stable or slowly decreased. The situation at the University of Ilorin Library in Nigeria is discussed where, following a period of relative stagnation, the Library journals budget could no longer absorb existing commitments. The effects of Nigeria′s Structural Adjustment Programme are also indicated and the need for cuts explained. The steps taken during the journal cancellation exercise are discussed and the benefits and problems identified.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to investigate pattern of conflict management in Nigerian university libraries

Design/methodology/approach

A survey employing descriptive design and using questionnaire to collect data from paraprofessional and professional staff of three Nigerian university libraries.

Findings

This article reveals the personal characteristics of the respondents; majority of respondents perceive conflict as positive and can be stimulated by library managers; a majority of them have experienced conflict with their colleagues followed by those who experienced it with their boss(es); interpersonal conflict ranks highest in the type of conflict experienced in the libraries; organisational goal(s) is a major fact taken into consideration during conflict resolution while accommodation ranks highest as technique of conflict avoidance; it is concluded that library managers should deal with conflicts as soon as they arise.

Originality/value

This paper generated important findings which are capable of enabling library managers and staff in understanding conflict and how it can be managed.

Abstract

Effective and efficient services will be difficult to attain in an organisation where disharmony and grievances thrive ‐ be it between staff and management, or among the staff themselves. The paper examines the role of a library staff welfare committee in the running of a Nigerian university library, and the social services offered to its members. Discusses the history, issues that plagued the scheme, the reactivation process, and the election of a democratic welfare committee. Concludes that the study has provided answers to some management problems in the library, while it points out that members prefer to be directed by their elected leaders. Suggests that a close working relationship is needed between library management and the welfare committee.

This study investigates how university libraries in Nigeria are staffed and presents staff development opportunities and learning activities that sustain staff.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates how university libraries in Nigeria are staffed and presents staff development opportunities and learning activities that sustain staff.

Methodology/approach

A survey research design was adopted. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 46 universities and 400 respondents consisting of 46 heads of libraries and 354 professionals from federal, state, and private universities. Content of the instrument was based on literature comprising six questions. The 327 (92.4%) usable responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics and presented in simple frequency tables.

Findings

The study showed that library workforce in Nigerian universities included different categories of professionals and para-professionals having diversified job opportunities and duties. Most libraries had staff development budget and respondents received various forms of assistance to foster learning. Although all nontransferable skills recorded high mean, respondents accorded less importance to nonlibrary personal skills that can be used to leverage the expectations of recruitment, retention, and sustainability.

Research implications

The study was limited to practicing professionals but has staffing implications for all libraries across Nigeria.

Practical implications

Many professionals may lack the appropriate multi-skills that would enhance exploring new approaches and breaking out of traditional ways of operation in the different library and outside library settings.

Originality/value

The study contributes to knowledge about sustaining library staff in relation to adopting the recommended skills on a broad scale, and assessing how their acquisition can change the perception of professionals to its immense contributions to sustaining them in the workforce.
