Abstract

Common challenges for healthcare systems worldwide are population ageing, rising therapy spending and reduced economic resources. In response, AI can play a crucial role in facilitating managerial and economic objectives within a holistic vision of care and improve the experience of patients and professionals. AI may change the delivery of services and the demand for them as well. This raises questions of how to balance the supply and demand sides of healthcare services, how to leverage competitive positioning and how to differentiate strategies specific to the public and to the private sector.

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) applications are increasingly used for day-to-day operations in healthcare. Each has a relatively limited scope or task, and several find application in managerial and organizational processes. More and more, AI and machine learning (ML) devices have received US FDA approval in the last decade. This chapter covers the main AI applications in healthcare, with a focus on organizational AI solutions (administrative AI), the main AI developers, their investment and real-world data and case studies in healthcare and other sectors. AI can be applied in resource management and procurement, resource allocation, clinical case management, staff work shift scheduling and handling of emergencies. AI applications are becoming ubiquitous in hospital (e.g. emergency room and operating theatre) and outpatient settings (e.g. ambulatory care and dentistry clinics). Their implementation is expected to bring direct benefits for patient care and satisfaction. This chapter gives a broad definition of AI in healthcare settings, with a focus on administrative applications and their use in case study data.

Abstract

Previous research on routine dynamics has most commonly incorporated consideration of power, politics, and conflict by using the notion of “truce.” In this paper, the authors propose a novel approach to integrating theories of power and politics with those of routine dynamics, and illustrate it by drawing on an in-depth study of operating room routines in a general hospital. The authors show how the dynamic interaction among groups’ sources of power, interests, and strategies is linked to the performance and patterning of routines. The approach opens up the originally rather static notion of “truce” to an inherently more dynamic and processual view of the micropolitics underpinning routines. The authors contribute to the routine dynamics literature by showing how and why the micropolitical context may influence, undermine, or reproduce the patterning and performing of organizational routines following a change initiative, and more broadly by illustrating an approach to integrating political considerations into the theory of routine dynamics.

The complex challenges facing the healthcare sector call for a revision of the ways it can provide high-quality services with economic sustainability. Revision can proceed along different pathways. Among the new paradigms of healthcare is the shift from a silo approach by hospitals towards an integrated, multidisciplinary approach. This entails restructuring hospitals in disease centres and exploring how AI can aid in the integration of hospital services and community care. Reorganization is vital to the development of patient-centred healthcare and the holistic approach. To achieve these goals, healthcare and policy decision-makers need to consider both the administrative and the clinical aspects of everyday issues. AI can play a key role in helping balance this duality. The overarching objective is to create interdisciplinary therapeutic and diagnostic pathways within care networks shared between the hospital and the community. This involves the analysis of huge amounts of data and interdisciplinary knowledge beyond the grasp of an individual. Therefore, knowing how AI can help in the development and reorganization of community healthcare is essential for clinical leaders to take advantage of this enormous opportunity in larger settings.

Across many high-stakes contexts, teams influence their members’ physical and psychological Well-Being. For example, teams can provide social support and backup behaviors to reduce demands on team members. On the contrary, teams engaged in conflict or other deleterious processes can serve as a source of stress for their members. Despite these potential impacts, existing research primarily focuses on the impact of teamwork on team-level, rather than individual-level outcomes. This chapter argues that teams play an important role in members’ Well-Being, synthesizing existing research on the topic and focusing on synthesizing research that suggests teams play an important and overlooked role in members’ Well-Being, and providing recommendations for future research in this domain.

This chapter examines how innovation and research are essential to the advancement of science, the economy, and society. We examine the current status of scientific research in Saudi Arabia, highlighting issues like financial limitations and a lack of skilled researchers. We emphasize how important it is to develop the next generation of scientists in order to transform existing practices and improve the state of scientific research in the country.

Proficiency in research and innovation is crucial for expanding the frontiers of knowledge, empowering scientists to tackle intricate problems, and advancing scientific rigor. These abilities also support the use of evidence in decision-making, enabling researchers to provide empirical data that inform practices and policies in a variety of industries. Sustained growth requires the formation of future leaders, who promote knowledge exchange and multidisciplinary collaboration.

Despite Saudi Arabia’s significant spending on science, problems still exist. Addressing governance deficiencies is demonstrated by the establishment of the Research, Development, and Innovation Authority in 2021. The nation has grown in the world’s scientific rankings, drawing eminent specialists and fostering cross-border cooperation. Still, there is room for improvement, especially when it comes to fostering a culture of research, improving financing sources, and encouraging international collaboration. It is imperative that these problems are resolved in order to avoid stagnation, guarantee ongoing innovation, and take advantage of chances for society’s progress.

The chapter ends with a call to action that highlights how quickly improvements must be made. Failing to do so runs the risk of stifling the advancement of science, preventing the creation of new technologies, and prolonging complicated issues. This groundbreaking technology is becoming central to achieve the goals of the new healthcare through the ongoing commitment to sustainability despite the severe lack of resources. Decision-makers in healthcare need knowledge and skills to prepare for the changes in many professional activities in the years ahead. Furthermore, chief medical officers and clinical leaders need to act on the opportunities that AI can bring, starting from its integration into the reality of healthcare settings while working with those responsible for managing and implementing AI in compliance with current legislation in Europe and the United States. Finally, stakeholders need to know how to leverage AI capabilities and how to recognize its limitations and its opportunities in administrative applications (admin AI) to optimize day-to-day operations and clinical applications (non-admin AI). Abstract

There are multiple threats that cause consumers to be vulnerable in the marketplace, with poverty being a leading cause. Impoverishment often negatively impacts access to multiple categories of goods and services that consumers require to experience a reasonable quality of life. While there is research that explores the underlying factors that lead to resource deficits and marketplace restrictions, as well as their physical and emotional outcomes, an understanding of what is necessary to survive and thrive across societies is more elusive. To this end, our chapter carefully examines the concept of consumption adequacy (CA), which historically captures consumer needs for food and potable water, socially acceptable clothing adapted to weather conditions, safe housing that provides for privacy needs of occupants, preventative and remedial health care, and opportunities to grow and advance through education and training. After briefly summarizing the extant literature, each is described in turn, and ways of empirically investigating them across societies are advanced. This chapter closes with both marketer and public policy implications.

Abstract

The detrimental effects of increased workloads and high-stakes accountability that impact on teachers’ job satisfaction and wellbeing have been well documented in the international literature (Holloway et al., 2017; Perryman et al., 2011). This chapter will explore the factors which influence staff mental health and wellbeing in schools. The authors unpack issues of burnout, job satisfaction and teacher attrition. The authors consider the concept of teacher resilience by situating resilience within a socio-ecological framework. Specifically, the authors draw on Greenfield’s (2015) model of teacher resilience. The authors draw on our own research to explore the relationship between staff wellbeing and student wellbeing (Glazzard & Rose, 2020). In addition, the authors consider the specific issues related to the wellbeing of school leaders.
