Abstract

Purpose

This paper reports on a project looking at consumer perceptions of terroir in the UK, using cheese as a stimulus for the data collection.

Design/methodology/approach

Data collection was based on a consumer survey using a discrete choice experiment which included a number of cues to, and stories about, terroir. Analysis of preferences produced three latent classes with varying attitudes towards terroir cues for cheese. There was also an open-ended question giving rise to a qualitative analysis of respondents understanding of the work “terroir”.

Findings

When faced with the terroir cues most used some positively to make their choices. A PDO label and stories about the production region and method and business structure all generally offered positive utility.

Originality/value

Terroir is a widely used term in the marketing of (especially) wine, particularly in Europe, offering a form of authenticity and has been very important in policies to sustain the economies of otherwise declining rural areas. It has been adopted by producers in the English-speaking world but is less widely recognised, by consumers. The significance of this study is that it is the first large-scale survey of British consumer perceptions around a key tool for rural businesses – terroir – and one of the first around a non-wine product, and it explores the stories which resonate most effectively with consumers.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates the influence of Knowledge Management (KM) on the Economic Performance (EP) of wineries in Spain and examines the intermediary role of Open Innovation (OI) in this relationship, also considering the effects of the age of the winery, its size and its affiliation to a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) as control variables to refine the causality analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

A theoretical framework derived from existing literature underpins this study, which employs Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to analyze data gathered from 196 wineries across Spain during the period from September 2022 to January 2023.

Findings

The analysis demonstrates a positive correlation between the implementation of KM practices and the EP of the wineries studied. Additionally, it identifies OI as a partial mediator in the relationship between KM and EP.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the academic discourse by outlining the benefits of KM, particularly in the Spanish wine sector, given that, to the authors' knowledge, there are no previous studies that have examined the catalytic effect of KM on OI and EP in this context, which supports the generation of new academic knowledge.

Abstract

Purpose

This research focuses firstly on the impact of Social Media Influencer Marketing (SMIM) on the Economic Performance (EP) of Spanish wineries, and secondly on the mediating effect of Corporate Social Legitimacy (CSL) on this main relationship (SMIM-EP). Age, size and Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) membership are used to increase the precision of the cause-effect relationships examined.

Design/methodology/approach

The study proposes a conceptual model based on previous studies, which is tested using structural equations (PLS-SEM) with data collected from 196 Spanish wineries between September 2022 and January 2023.

Findings

The results reveal a positive and significant relationship between the development of SMIM and the EP of Spanish wineries, as well as the partial mediation of CSL in the SMIM-EP relationship.

Originality/value

The uniqueness of this study can be attributed to several factors. First, it enhances the understanding and knowledge of the benefits associated with SMIM development in the winemaking context. Second, no previous research has conducted an empirical study on the development of SMIM as a catalyst for EP in the context of Spanish wineries. Third, to the authors' knowledge, no previous study has examined the mediating role of CSL in the SMIM-EP relationship, thus representing an opportunity to advance scientific knowledge related to SMIM.

Abstract

Purpose

The present study seeks to assess the effect of Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) on the Sustainable Performance (SP) of wineries as well as to explore the mediating role of Green Innovation (GI) in this respect. In addition, age, size and Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) membership are incorporated as control variables to increase the precision of the cause-effect relationships examined.

Design/methodology/approach

A conceptual model was created in order to fulfill the targeted research goals and then validated through PLS-SEM with primary data obtained from a survey administered to 196 Spanish wineries, taking place between September 2022 and January 2023.

Findings

The study findings indicate that GHRM has a positive and significant impact on the SP of wineries. In addition, GI appears to partially mediate this relationship.

Originality/value

This study is justified by various grounds for its originality. First, there is a lack of prior research examining the impact of GHRM practices in the wine industry, making this study a unique opportunity to explore and leverage existing knowledge in the fields of environmental management and human resources in order to generate new insights on the topic. Second, the academic literature analyzing this particular construct is scarce, underscoring the aim of this research to contribute to the accumulation of relevant knowledge in this area. Third, GHRM serves to elucidate the mechanisms through which valuable personnel can be attracted and retained in wineries within the post-COVID context.

This research focuses on analyzing the impact of Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) on the Sustainable Performance (SP) of Spanish wineries, as well as the mediating effect of Green Ambidexterity Innovation (GAI) and the moderating role of Top Management Environmental Awareness (TMEA) on the main relationship posited (GSCM-SP). In addition, age, size and membership in a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) were used to increase the precision of the cause-effect relationships examined.

Design/methodology/approach

The study proposes a conceptual model based on previous studies, which is tested using structural equations (PLS-SEM) with data collected from 196 Spanish wineries between September 2022 and January 2023.

Findings

The results of the research reveal the existence of a positive and significant relationship between the development of GSCM and SP of Spanish wineries, as well as the partial mediation of GAI and the positive moderation of TMEA in this linkage.

Originality/value

The novelty of this study lies in its exploratory approach, as it ventures into new research territory by examining the mediating effect of GAI and the moderating influence of TMEA on the relationship between GSCM and SP, being, to the authors' knowledge, the first research to investigate these specific dynamics.

This study aims to focus on analysing the impact of green human resource management (GHRM) on the green performance (GP) of Spanish wineries, as well as the mediating effect of employee well-being (EW) on this linkage. In addition, age, size and membership in a protected designation of origin are introduced as control variables to increase the precision of the cause-effect relationships examined.

Design/methodology/approach

The study proposes a conceptual model based on previous studies, which is tested using structural equations partial least squares structural equation modelling with data collected from 196 Spanish wineries between September 2022 and January 2023.

Findings

The findings of the research reveal the existence of a positive and significant relationship between the GHRM development and the GP of Spanish wineries, as well as the partial mediation of EW in this association.

Originality/value

The uniqueness and significance of this study can be attributed to several crucial factors. First, it enhances the understanding and knowledge regarding the advantages associated with GHRM development. Second, no prior research has conducted a comprehensive study on GHRM as a catalyst for GP within the context of Spanish wineries. Third, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, no previous study has analyzed the mediating role of EW as a mediator in the relationship between GHRM and GP of wineries.

Abstract

Purpose

While gastronomy has become a major tourist attraction for rural territories, its study in protected areas remains underexplored. These places use their cultural and natural heritage and landscape, as well as their local identity, to charm visitors. Gastronomy plays a key role in this, and restaurants do their best to promote local food products. The aim of this article is to use a qualitative and case study approach to analyze the marketing and touristic impact of Prades potatoes (“Patata de Prades”), which are certified with a Protected Geographical Indication.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 16 semi-structured interviews with restaurateurs (11) and producers (4) and the manager of the local cooperative (1) are the basis for examining the importance of this potato as a form of tourist attraction, its commercialization processes and the role it plays in the development of this protected rural region of Catalonia, in the north-east of Spain.

Findings

The results show that despite the great success of restaurants and food-based tourism with regard to Prades potatoes, the sustainability and future of this starchy vegetable are not guaranteed due to the scarcity of production, as it is a seasonal commodity and there is a lack of generational replacement in farming.

Originality/value

Food tourism that relies on local produce represents a “green” model for community development, but a specific public program is required to support the agricultural sector in the isolated areas to prevent the disappearance of this economic sector.

Abstract

Purpose

The present research aims to analyze the influence of Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) on the Sustainable Performance (SP) of Spanish wineries, examining the intermediary roles of Circular Economy Capability (CEC) and Green Ambidexterity Innovation (GAI) within this primary relationship. In particular, the study seeks to answer the following Research Questions (RQs): (RQ1), does GSCM exert a positive impact on wineries’ SP? (RQ2), does CEC play a mediating role in the interconnection between GSCM and wineries’ SP? And (RQ3), does GAI function as a mediator in the interplay between GSCM and wineries’ SP?

Design/methodology/approach

The research utilizes Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to evaluate the hypothesized theoretical model using primary data collected from 196 Spanish wineries from September 2022 to January 2023.

Findings

The results reveal a positive relationship between GSCM and SP in Spanish wineries, as well as the existence of positive partial mediations of CEC and GAI in this main linkage, which allows an affirmative answer to the three RQs formulated.

Originality/value

Distinguished by its innovative exploration, this research marks a pioneering effort in the uncharted field of scrutinizing CEC and GAI as mediating factors in the GSCM-SP nexus, thereby enriching the existing body of knowledge and opening new avenues for future academic research on sustainability in the wine industry.

Abstract

Purpose

A growing body of literature analyzes eco-innovation in the wine industry, specifically focusing on the internal and external factors that contribute to sustainable innovation in wineries. The purpose of this study is to classify wineries according to their eco-innovation strategy and investigate variations in innovation groups concerning networking and socio-demographic characteristics.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use an original firm-level survey conducted between June 2022 and January 2023 to study eco-innovation practices of 234 Hungarian winemakers using four groups of indicators: marketing, organizational, process and product innovations. The authors apply principal component analysis and cluster analysis to identify eco-innovation dimensions and group wineries. The authors also investigate the relationship between eco-innovation strategies, determinants and firm-specific characteristics.

Findings

The estimations identify two innovation modes: with Cluster 1 (characterized by innovative wineries) surpassing Cluster 2 (comprising less innovative wineries) in all aspects. Marketing and process innovations were more widespread than product and organizational innovations. The results confirm the importance of firm and manager characteristics, corporate organization and size, age and education of management influence innovation activity.

Research limitations/implications

The cross-sectional nature of the survey provides a snapshot of the wine industry. To identify changing trends, it is beneficial to conduct follow-up research and ongoing monitoring for a more comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of eco-innovation over time. The study offers valuable information about the Hungarian wine sector, but generalization of results to other geographic areas or wine-producing regions should be careful. The unique characteristics of particular regions might have a different effect on the dynamics of eco-innovation. Comparative studies across different wine regions or countries may reveal regional variations in eco-innovation strategies and the impact of local contexts.

Practical implications

The study highlights the priority of human elements, such as the commitment of owners and managers to sustainability in driving force for innovation. The ability of businesses to absorb new knowledge and the exchange of information within organizations is crucial in promoting innovation. Considering the results of the survey, managers should proactively strive to improve knowledge transfer and information sharing within their organizations and establish cooperative alliances with universities, research institutes, suppliers, industry bodies and associations and global consultancy firms. Such knowledge-based cooperation can counterweight the innovative inertia of the micro and small enterprises representing the Hungarian wine sector.

Social implications

To address the issue of “innovative inertia” faced by micro and small businesses in the wine sector, policymakers may implement focused supports, such as educational initiatives and grants, to augment their understanding and promote sustainable innovation. They should initiate intra- and inter-cluster connections and cooperations. Incentives, such as tax reduction or financial support, may stimulate wineries to introduce eco-innovation practices. Policymakers could also streamline the process of obtaining funding or grants for wineries interested in investing in cutting-edge solutions, such as renewable energy or advanced cultivation technologies to accelerate the adoption of sustainable practices.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the eco-innovation literature by providing insights into the drivers and practices of wineries in Hungary. The results emphasize the significance of networking, sharing of knowledge and firm/manager-specific characteristics in influencing eco-innovation in the wine industry.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to unveil the efficacy of coaching leadership within Chinese organizations and bolster employees’ work engagement.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample data were collected through employing the questionnaire method. The participants consisted of 234 employees and 53 supervisors in Chinese enterprises. Hypothesis testing was conducted using multiple regression analysis and the Bootstrap method.

Findings

The coaching leadership exhibited a positive association with employees’ work engagement, psychological safety and self-efficacy. It was observed that employees’ psychological safety and self-efficacy played a dual-mediation role between coaching leadership and work engagement. Additionally, employees with power distance orientation (POD) amplified the positive effects of coaching leadership on psychological safety and self-efficacy.

Research limitations/implications

This study contributes to the literature on coaching leadership and work engagement by elucidating their direct influence, as well as the dual-mediating roles of psychological safety and self-efficacy. Besides, our findings underscore the moderating effect of POD in amplifying the impacts of coaching leadership. However, the nonlongitudinal survey design adopted by our study should be noted for its potential limitations in establishing causality.

Practical implications

The findings demonstrate that coaching leadership, psychological safety and self-efficacy play a crucial role in fostering work engagement. Employees with higher POD are more likely to benefit from coaching leaders.

Originality/value

This study contributes to coaching leadership literature and provides insights into how and when coaching leadership affects work engagement in Chinese organizations.
