Abstract

Purpose

The exchange of goods between individual consumers being facilitated by the internet and “peer‐to‐peer” (P2P) systems is severely altering the business landscape. In broader terms, P2P exchanges are a form of what has occasionally been labeled “consumer‐to‐consumer” (C2C) exchange. What little work there is in business research which has examined both C2C and P2P exchange has to‐date been largely anecdotal or conceptual. This paper aims to address these shortcomings

Design/methodology/approach

A model of antecedents germane to the P2P phenomenon is formulated and empirically tested which includes the consumer's satisfaction with, extent of usage of, and future behavioral intentions toward P2P exchanges as the focal endogenous constructs of interest.

Findings

The model is tested with perceptual and archival data from a survey of consumers active in one prevalent form of P2P exchange (i.e. the “swapping” of pirated music). The model explains significant variance in all three focal endogenous constructs.

Research limitations/implications

The primary limitations include the study's exploratory nature and not being able to incorporate all potentially salient constructs and variables germane to the P2P phenomenon within the context of the study reported here. Additionally, and from a sampling perspective, a more heterogeneous sample may benefit future research.

Practical implications

The key insight emerging from the work is that the wide prevalence of P2P exchanges occurring globally between consumers has more to do with unexplored aspects of the phenomenon (such as its convenience; the “connectedness” it makes consumers feel to others) and seemingly much less to do with traditional marketing mix variables.

Originality/value

While much has been written in the practitioner ranks and popular press about the problem of P2P exchanges, this work represents one of the first empirical studies of the antecedent drivers of the phenomenon. As is articulated in the paper's concluding sections, from a more embracing frame of reference, P2P systems and “consumer‐to‐consumer” exchanges are not the dire threats many marketing managers believe them to be. Challenges remain, however, for marketers to determine how to best harness these powerful new systems.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to deliberate and illustrate the overall peer-to-peer (P2P) business process, user requirements and design considerations under Industry 4.0 based on enterprise information system for P2P lending.

Design/methodology/approach

Exploratory approach with a systematic literature review and content analysis method.

Findings

P2P lending uses different credit audition methods and relies on information available in the system and the decision model. So IT techniques, for example, big data analysis and data mining, on credit audition are key points in P2P lending but the application of Industry 4.0 to the P2P lending landscape can yield several new benefits with a well-designed EIS, which is critical to service various stakeholders.

Research limitations/implications

This study is exploratory in nature and may need more testing on an empirical basis before drawing generalizations. Implications of research included in this area are that it poses good challenges to researchers from different disciplines such as economics, business management and information, communication and technology.

Originality/value

Deliberations of business process for P2P lending via enterprise information system under Industry 4.0 in the African context is of value as these emerging economies adopt new systems and processes to meet the requirements of Industry 4.0.

Abstract

Purpose

Traditional payment systems based on cash and bank cards are being replaced by new innovative formats. This research analyzes the success factors in the adoption by customers of Bizum, a peer-to-peer (P2P) mobile payment system widely used in Spain. This study proposes a theoretical framework based on the Stimulus–Organism–Response (S-O-R) model and includes the analysis of the moderating effect of perceived risk and the mediating effect of perceived trust.

Design/methodology/approach

To achieve the proposed objectives, an online questionnaire was administered to 701 Spanish smartphone users, potential users of the proposed P2P payment systems.

Findings

The results show that perceived usefulness is the most important predictor of intention to use. Additionally, a medium predictive relevance performance of the proposed model is found.

Originality/value

This research contributes to a more holistic understanding of the adoption of P2P payment systems and provides new business opportunities that companies can exploit through the use of this technology.

Abstract

Purpose

Using features of social media, peer-to-peer (P2P) mobile payment enables users to foster social interaction every time transactions are made. Given the increasing popularity of social features in P2P mobile payment applications, it is worth understanding how these components contribute to users’ switching behavior between conventional mobile payment and P2P mobile payment services. By treating sociability of P2P mobile payment as a pull factor, this study aims to extend the push–pull–mooring framework in the context of P2P mobile payment.

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire survey was conducted to obtain data. Respondents from the USA were exclusively selected due to the emerging number of P2P mobile payment users and the volume of transactions in this country. Based on a sample of 232 Amazon Mechanical Turk mobile payment users, the authors tested the hypotheses using the partial least squares structural equation model technique with SmartPLS software version 3.

Findings

The finding reveals that sociability is triggered by social presence, social benefit and social support within the P2P mobile payment platform. Moreover, dissatisfaction with perceived enjoyment of conventional mobile payment (push factor), customer innovativeness (mooring factor) and sociability of P2P mobile payment (pull factor) jointly influence users’ intention to switch to P2P mobile payment services, and subsequently drive their migration behavior.

Originality/value

Unlike past research that mainly focuses on utilitarian-related factors, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is among the first to thoroughly examine the sociability features of P2P mobile payment service as a form of a social-centric system.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to review the characteristics of systems that combine P2P technology with explicit ontologies and assess the benefits of these technologies for inter‐organizational knowledge management.

Design/methodology/approach

We characterize existing technologies with respect to a number of aspects that are relevant to knowledge management on a technical level. We further provide an example of an existing system and categorize it according to the aspects.

Findings

We conclude that ontology‐based P2P systems are in general beneficial for distributed knowledge management systems and that the design of such systems can be guided using the aspects we distinguish.

Originality/value

The paper presents the first attempt to rigorously identify and discuss the design space of ontology‐based P2P systems.

Abstract

Purpose

This work is motivated by the need to develop decentralized peer‐to‐peer (P2P) approaches to support e‐learning and teaching activity in virtual universities. This paper aims to present the implementation of the JXTA‐based e‐learning P2P system.

Design/methodology/approach

The design and implementation of a smart box environment that will be used for stimulating the learners to increase the learning efficiency is shown. The smart box is integrated with the JXTA‐overlay by using efficient message sending between peers in the system.

Findings

The proposed e‐learning P2P system is a useful tool for monitoring and controlling learners' activity.

Research limitations/implications

In the future, other effective stimulation for each learner using IC tag card will be added. Also, the Servo Motor has 12 control ports, so these will be used for implementing other stimulating functions. It is planned to extend the system with functionalities for presence mechanism of students in classrooms and activities.

Practical implications

The proposed system is evaluated by experimental results and it has a good performance.

Originality/value

This paper proposes and implements a novel e‐learning system, which is based on P2P, web and sensor technologies.

Abstract

Resource discovery in peer‐to‐peer (P2P) systems have been extensively studied. Unfortunately, most of the systems studied are not designed to take advantage of the heterogeneity in peer nodes. In this paper, we propose a novel P2P overlay called RATTAN, which serves as an underlay of a Gnutella‐like network. RATTAN exploits the heterogeneity of peer nodes by structuring capable nodes as the core of the overlay. Using a tree‐like structure, RATTAN can maximize the search scope with a minimal number of query messages. We evaluate RATTAN with simulation. The experiments show the following interesting results. First, RATTAN is robust by exploiting redundant overlay links. Second, the maximum bandwidth demand for processing the protocol of a single RATTAN overlay is nearly 1M bits/sec. However, around 80% of the nodes merely take 66 bits/sec. One implication is that we can use a small number of relatively capable peers (e.g., stable machines with a 100M bits/sec network interface) to process the 1M bits/sec protocol overhead and serve other peers that only need to spend 66 bits/sec for processing protocol overhead.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper hypothesized that perceived relative advantage and perceived compatibility would have a positive effect on merchants' intention to accept payments via P2P mobile payment services, while perceived financial risks and perceived costs would have a negative effect. The study also explored the differences in gender, age and experience.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed model is based on the valence framework, where positive utility is represented by relative advantage and perceived compatibility, while negative utility is represented by perceived risks and perceived costs. The data for this study were collected from small business owners (merchants) at the largest public market in the Center Department of Mirebalais, Haiti, using a purposive sampling method.

Findings

The results of a structural equation modeling on a sample of 339 merchants only confirmed the effect of both perceived comparative advantage and perceived compatibility. Furthermore, the multigroup analysis revealed that the perceived comparative advantage is stronger for female merchants, older age groups and merchants who frequently used P2P m-payment for the transfer of remittances. Perceived compatibility is stronger for male merchants, younger age groups and merchants who occasionally used P2P m-payment for the transfer of remittances.

Originality/value

This study was conducted in the economic context of Haiti, where P2P m-payments are commonly used for transferring remittances. Since there are limited studies that examine P2P m-payment acceptance from the perspective of merchants, this study offers valuable insights.

Peer‐to‐Peer computing offers many attractive features, such as collaboration, self‐organization, load balancing, availability, fault tolerance and anonymity. However, it also faces many serious challenges. In our previous work, we implemented a synchronous P2P collaboration platform called TOMSCOP. However, the TOMSCOP was implemented only in Windows XPOS. In this work, we extend our previous work and present a multi‐platform Peer‐to‐Peer system. The proposed system operates very smoothly in UNIX Solaris 9 OS, Linux Suse 9.1 OS, Mac OSX, and Windows XP. In this paper, we present the design of proposed system and four web application tools: info, joint draw pad, shared web browser and subaru avatar.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose MUREX, a mutable replica control scheme, to keep one‐copy equivalence for synchronous replication in structured peer‐to‐peer (P2P) storage systems.

Design/methodology/approach

For synchronous replication in P2P networks, it is proper to adopt crash‐recovery as the fault model; that is, nodes are fail‐stop and can recover and rejoin the system after synchronizing their states with other active nodes. In addition to the state synchronization problem, the paper identifies other two problems to solve for synchronous replication in P2P storage systems. They are the replica acquisition and the replica migration problems.

Findings

On the basis of multi‐column read/write quorums, MUREX conquers the problems by the replica pointer, the on‐demand replica regeneration, and the leased lock techniques.

Originality/value

The paper proves the correctness of MUREX, analyzes and also simulates it in terms of communication cost and operation success rate.
