Abstract

Focuses on time reduction in meetings through the use of group decision support systems (GDSS). Reports on some criticisms of GDSS, in that it increases time taken to reach a decision, and addresses this issue. Refers to Grosch’s Law, the Satisficing Model, and the 80/20 rule (or Pareto Principle). Applies the 80/20 rule to the number of papers published by a number of authors. Plots a chart of the figures and finds that 77 per cent of papers are written by 23 per cent of authors. Links back these findings to GDSS and suggests that by controlling openness, some control can be exercised over the length of time it takes to reach a decision. Indicates that the use of electronic meeting systems will increase and, consequently, further research should be carried out in reducing uproductive meeting time.

Abstract

Describes an innovative pictorial representation of business rules which clarifies the interrelationships of data entities and semantic constraints to enhance the communication among different levels of management. This pictorial representation scheme can be implemented using a set of microcomputer‐based CASE tools, and the result provides a comprehensive view of all aspects of management activity.

Abstract

The effective placement of ads is important, especially those placed on the World Wide Web. As a supplement to existing measure of visit count, proposes the use of “exposure” as a means to measure the effectiveness of the Web ad placement. Furthermore, based on the relationship among products placed on the same Web page and the purpose of the ad, proposes an analytical framework and guidelines on whether to make the ad a destination or a control site, in order to maximize the exposure and minimize the competition.

Abstract

As part of the business strategy in a competitive environment, for an organization to induct information technology (IT) appropriately, business process reengineering (BPR) must be conducted. We propose a process that incorporates both management information systems and strategic management concepts for the IT induction. First, we develop a business competition strategy based on Porter’s five competitive forces; second, using concepts developed in the field of information systems the business processes are reengineered to improve effectiveness and efficiency; and finally, IT strategy is developed to achieve these goals. A real‐life case in the food service industry is used to illustrate this process.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to focus on the different types of insider-led cyber frauds that gained mainstream attention in recent large-scale fraud events involving prominent Indian banking institutions. In addition to identifying and classifying cyber fraud, the study maps them on a severity scale for optimal mitigation planning.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology used for identification and classification is an analysis of a detailed literature review, a focus group discussion with risk and vigilance officers and cyber cell experts, as well as secondary data of cyber fraud losses. Through machine learning-based random forest, the authors predicted the future of insider-led cyber frauds in the Indian banking business and prioritized and predicted the same. The projected future reveals the dominance of a few specific cyber frauds, which will make it easier to develop a fraud mitigation model based on a victim-centric approach.

Findings

The paper concludes with a conceptual framework that can be used to ensure a sustainable cyber fraud mitigation ecosystem within the scope of the study. By using the findings of this research, policymakers and fraud investigators will be able to create a more robust environment for banks through timely detection of cyber fraud and prevent it appropriately before it happens.

Research limitations/implications

The study focuses on fraud, risk and mitigation from a victim-centric perspective and does not address it from the fraudster’s perspective. Data availability was a challenge. Banks are recommended to compile data that can be used for analysis both by themselves and other policymakers.

Practical implications

The structured, sustainable cyber fraud mitigation suggested in the study will provide an agile, quick, proactive, stakeholder-specific plan that helps to safeguard banks, employees, regulatory authorities, customers and the economy. It saves resources, cost and time for bank authorities and policymakers. The mitigation measures will also help improve the reputational status of the Indian banking business and prolong the banks’ sustenance.

Originality/value

The innovative cyber fraud mitigation approach contributes to the sustainability of a bank’s ecosystem quickly, proactively and effectively.

Abstract

Certain elements of Hayek’s work are prominent precursors to the modern field of complex adaptive systems, including his ideas on spontaneous order, his focus on market processes, his contrast between designing and gardening, and his own framing of complex systems. Conceptually, he was well ahead of his time, prescient in his formulation of novel ways to think about economies and societies. Technically, the fact that he did not mathematically formalize most of the notions he developed makes his insights hard to incorporate unambiguously into models. However, because so much of his work is divorced from the simplistic models proffered by early mathematical economics, it stands as fertile ground for complex systems researchers today. I suggest that Austrian economists can create a progressive research program by building models of these Hayekian ideas, and thereby gain traction within the economics profession. Instead of mathematical models the suite of techniques and tools known as agent-based computing seems particularly well-suited to addressing traditional Austrian topics like money, business cycles, coordination, market processes, and so on, while staying faithful to the methodological individualism and bottom-up perspective that underpin the entire school of thought.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a case study on the practical application of scenario planning techniques to complete a re-structuring of an academic liaison team within the Library at the University of the West of England in 2011.

Design/methodology/approach

The application of scenario planning as a technique for mapping a realistic future for the team within the wider library service was evaluated using questionnaires. After detailing the scenarios developed, the paper concludes with consideration of the feedback received from the staff involved and the learning for future iterations of the technique.

Findings

The case study concludes by reflecting, 18 months on, how certain things might have been done differently. The feedback from staff on the process was used in honing a wider, more radical ranging staffing review.

Research limitations/implications

The study has limitations as it was a time bounded exercise. The process began in March 2011 and new structures had to be agreed and in place by summer 2011.

Practical implications

The comparison of the scenarios can assist managers in evaluating and selecting the appropriate scenario planning model based on organisational need, while reinforcing the importance of effective consultation/dialogue with staff.

Originality/value

The article shows that Library managers can benefit from the deployment of scenario planning techniques when effecting organisational change, and that being as inclusive as possible in the process is probably the best approach, if practical.

Abstract

This article presents the results of a survey of 202 male Taiwanese consumers. In this study, consumer judgements of two technological products varying in their level of complexity made in highly, moderately, and newly industrialised countries were obtained in a multi‐attribute context. The results show that the country‐of‐origin image of moderately and newly industrialised countries was less negative for technologically simpler products (i.e. a television) than they were for technologically complex products (i.e. a computer). It appears that the negative image of moderately and newly industrialised countries can be attenuated by making Taiwanese consumers more familiar with products made in these countries and/or by providing them with other product‐related information such as brand name and warranty. Newly industrialised countries were perceived more negatively as countries of design than as countries of assembly, especially in the context of making technologically complex products. The image of foreign countries as producers of consumer goods was positively correlated with education. The more familiar consumers were with the products of a country, the more favourable was their evaluation of that country. Consumer involvement with purchasing a technologically complex product such as a computer was positively associated with the appreciation of products made in moderately industrialised countries. Managerial and research implications are derived from these results.
