Abstract
The North Cyprus tourism industry has been sensitive to the political instability on the island, which has arisen from the political problems between the Turkish and Greek Cypriots. Economic integration with Turkey and federation with the Greek Cypriots are considered to be two alternative political solutions. This paper evaluates the possible impacts of these two political scenarios on the tourism industry of North Cyprus by using semi‐structured interviews with experts and senior managers. Findings suggest that although economic integration has already been implemented to an extent, it has not contributed to the development of the tourism industry of North Cyprus as hoped. A federal solution to the Cyprus problem is expected to have a more favourable impact on the tourism industry of North Cyprus. Thus, long‐term benefits of the North Cyprus tourism industry lie with a federal solution to the Cyprus problem.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of a speculative attack on the Turkish Lira in the North Cyprus banking sector during the period 1984‐2002.
Design/methodology/approach
A mutivariate logit model is the empirical methodology employed in this analysis that allows us to identify the determinants of the probability of bank failure. In the model, the existence of contagious currency crises is constructed as an index of exchange market pressure, which is a weighted average of changes in interest rates, international reserves and the nominal exchange rate.
Findings
The empirical result reveals that the a speculative attack on the Turkish Lira in 1994 and 2001 put stress on banks operating in North Cyprus and led to banking sector distress. The findings also suggest that bank‐specific weaknesses, high interest rates, high credit, low trade and the fixed exchange rate policy significantly increased the bank fragility.
Research implications/limitations
For further research this paper may better distinguish contagion if it uses economic and financial ties from Turkey that are practically susceptible to bank failure in North Cyprus.
Practical implications
This paper presents a practical application of a currency crisis model in the North Cyprus banking sector. In addition to the risk of currency crises, risk under fixed rate regimes, interest rate risk, trade risks and credit risk are also used to encourage correct risk management behaviour in the North Cyprus banking sector.
Originality/value
This analysis would appear to be the first systematic evidence that investigates the effect of a speculative pressure on Turkish Lira in the North Cyprus banking sector.

Abstract
Purpose
The aim of the study is to consider the extent to which the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) agreed by United Nations member states contribute to sustainable tourism and to relevant targets in North Cyprus. The study also investigates how tourism stakeholders in North Cyprus understand and implement the UN’s SDGs.
Design/methodology/approach
A qualitative study with structured questions was used to investigate awareness of the UN SDGs and collaboration between 19 tourism stakeholders from different sectors (tour guides, hotels, travel agencies, restaurants and government) in North Cyprus.
Findings
The results of the study reveal that not all of the SDGs have been embraced in North Cyprus, and that there is lack of understanding about the goals and about the need for collaboration among the different tourism stakeholders in North Cyprus.
Practical implications
This study reveals many shortcomings in implementing sustainable tourism in North Cyprus. It would seem that only issues that affect financial performance are prioritised. At present, tourism stakeholders in North Cyprus do not collaborate and do not believe that collaboration would, in any way, influence the sustainability of tourism in the region or benefit them financially. Given this finding, stakeholder collaboration needs to be enhanced in support of tourism sustainability in North Cyprus, and in this, the government needs to act as a catalyst.
Originality/value
Many developing countries are trying to improve living conditions and, at the same time, protect the environment by implementing sustainable development initiatives. The most common initiatives include the creation of protected areas for tourism development. In this context, sustainable development targets for island economies such as North Cyprus are important.

Abstract
Purpose
To analyze the impact of agricultural sector on the economy of North Cyprus, which suffers from political problems and drought over the years.
Design/methodology/approach
Annual data covering 1975‐2002 period has been used to find the direction of causality in Granger sense between agricultural growth and economic growth after employing unit root tests to see if the variables under consideration are stationary.
Findings
Results of the present study first suggest that agricultural output growth and economic growth as measured by real gross domestic product growth are stationary at their levels, thus, they are naturally co‐integrated. They are in long run equilibrium relationship. And secondly, there is feedback relationship between these variables that indicates bidirectional causation among them in the long run period.
Research limitations/implications
A more expanded data can be used for further comparison. Furthermore, a future study can be done for other islands to make comparison across themselves.
Practical implications
This study has shown that although North Cyprus suffers from political problems and drought in the agriculture sector, this sector still has an impact on the economy. Thus, effective policies related with this sector should be developed by authorities. Building pipelines from Turkey, which are at the agenda of North Cyprus and Turkish governments over the years should immediately put into action. This will have enormous impact on both sides of the island on the way to a solution in Cyprus problem.
Originality/value
This study is the first of its kind which analyzes the relationship between agricultural output and economic growth in a small island which has a closed economy and is politically non‐recognized state. Furthermore, it is a rare study made for small islands.

Abstract
Iran, with its young and highly literate population, constitutes one of the main higher education markets in the Middle East region. Having now developed a highly comprehensive higher education sector, a result of the efforts to advance the higher education system following the Islamic Revolution in 1979, it is of no surprise that more than four million Iranians are currently enrolled in higher education institutions in Iran. Regardless of these developments, however, meeting the increasing demand for tertiary education has been a challenge leading to a large number of Iranians pursuing tertiary education opportunities overseas. This has created a vast and promising market for student importing countries, which has proved to be too difficult for international student recruiters to penetrate due to international sanctions imposed on Iran and local economic problems coupled with certain restrictions imposed internally by the ruling authorities. Despite the challenges of not being politically recognised as legitimate except by Turkey, North Cyprus has been one of the most popular destinations for Iranian students particularly in the last decade. Relative to its size, North Cyprus has proved to be one of the most internationalised higher education system in the world with more than 30,000 international students from more than 100 different countries and more significantly, Iranian students constitute one of the largest cohort. This chapter explores the student recruitment process from Iran with a specific focus on the external and internal challenges faced by the students as well as by the recruiters. North Cyprus is particularly evaluated as a case study to present how some challenges may have been overcome and student flow can be achieved even to a country that has been struggling against the externalities of international political non-recognition.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to review the current state of energy efficiency in North Cyprus and the extent to which this supports small island sustainable tourism development, together with related policy implications.
Design/methodology/approach
Documentary analysis is used to evaluate energy efficiency studies in North Cyprus.
Findings
Results of this study reveal that the legal framework relating to energy efficiency and stakeholder reports about the level of energy efficiency falls short of expectations for sustainable tourism practices from an energy efficiency perspective.
Practical implications
Policymakers should consider revising the current draft energy efficiency law to take into account the needs and views of hospitality and tourism stakeholders. This could be accomplished by involving them in discussions about how enhanced energy efficiency could contribute to economic, social and environmental development. Further, policymakers and these industry stakeholders in North Cyprus should develop common goals to harmonise tourism and energy regulations in support of sustainable development.
Originality/value
This study evaluates current energy efficiency developments and possible contributions to sustainable tourism development in North Cyprus. Energy efficiency policy has not yet been applied in North Cyprus, and a broad-ranging policy could help to prevent future environmental problems in North Cyprus.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is twofold. First, to consider the ways in which transportation could be more sustainable in North Cyprus, which is mostly dependent on tourism and higher education as a small island destination. Second, to investigate current issues in the transportation sector related to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Design/methodology/approach
This study employed a qualitative approach, and a descriptive analysis technique was used to analyse semi-structured interviews, conducted by telephone and face-to-face. To investigate current problems in the North Cyprus transportation sector – one of the most affected by the pandemic – travel agencies were chosen as the study’s population and research participants were selected purposively.
Findings
The findings indicate that the unpredictability of domestic policies combined with the structural challenges confronting North Cyprus contribute to unsustainable current transportation policies. North Cyprus transport and tourism both suffered significant losses during the pandemic but travel agencies were disproportionately impacted. Our study results showed that exorbitant ticket prices, taxes and transportation costs have emerged as the most significant issues in the transportation sector.
Research limitations/implications
More efficient and accurate policies that meet the needs of the sector and give opportunity for development are required. This is a critical issue for policymakers to address, as they also represent a significant barrier to the sector's long-term competitiveness.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first qualitative study to look at North Cyprus’ transportation problems from the perspective of travel agencies and the impact of the pandemic. It is thought that this study will contribute to the development of solutions for transportation problems and sustainable practices in small island developing states.
