Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the impact of consumption values on consumers’ purchase of organic food and green environmental concerns. Additionally, the relationships between green environmental concerns and consumers’ purchase of organic food are investigated.

Design/methodology/approach

A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to 500 consumers with experience in purchasing organic food in Pakistan. The covariance-based structural equation modeling (CB-SEM) technique was used for the data analysis using the Analysis of Moments Structure software version 23. The CB-SEM technique allows for the simultaneous estimation of all relationships.

Findings

The CB-SEM technique reveals that of the 11 hypotheses tested, social value heavily influences consumers’ green environmental concerns. Moreover, consumers’ purchase of organic food is greatly impacted by conditional value. Consumers purchase organic food for their daily needs because they feel responsible for preserving and protecting the environment against global warming and its associated threats. This green purchasing behavior actually leads to better social approval, through its ability to impress others.

Practical implications

Organizations and business owners should address green environmental concerns by seriously applying organic methods in the process of production, processing, packaging and selling of organic food products. Such organic practices would enable organizations and business owners to produce organic food products that are free from chemicals.

Originality/value

The inclusion of consumption values strengthens the explanatory power of the proposed model in the context of Pakistani consumers’ purchase of organic food and green environmental concerns simultaneously. This study therefore adds new and substantial insights into the marketing theory.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is threefold: to assess the impact of green brand positioning, consumers’ attitude toward green brands, and green brand knowledge on green product purchase intention; to investigate the influence of green brand knowledge on consumers’ attitude toward green brands; and to examine the moderating effect of green brand knowledge on the relationship between green brand positioning and green product purchase intention.

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire was utilized to gather the data (n=300) for this study. The purposive sampling technique was used, involving respondents who practice a green lifestyle and have had green product purchasing experience. The partial least squares (PLS) method, which is a variance-based technique for the analysis of structural equation modeling, was used to analyze the data, with the assistance of the SmartPLS computer program version 2.0.

Findings

Based on the standardized path coefficients of the structural model from the PLS results, green brand knowledge was found to be the most significant determinant of green product purchase intention. Knowledge of green brands has caused consumers to develop positive green marketing awareness and has bolstered their interest in fortifying the environment whilst preventing its degradation. Furthermore, green brand knowledge also impacted consumers’ attitude toward green brands. However, this factor was an insignificant moderator of the impact between green brand positioning and green product purchase intention.

Practical implications

Green brand positioning can be used by firms and businesses to better market their products and improve consumers’ green brand knowledge and attitude toward green brands, as well as increase green brand purchase intentions. Successful green brand positioning is seen as an advantage for marketers that can be used to differentiate their products from the available competitors, giving the impression that their products are distinguishable, and thus creating more demand and generating increased intention to purchase more green products.

Originality/value

The empirical results of this study address the gap in the prevailing body of literature in reference to the impact of green brand positioning and consumer attitude toward green brands, as well as the effect of green brand knowledge on green product purchase intention. This study found that green brand knowledge does not moderate the relationship between green brand positioning and green product purchase intention, thus providing insight into this subject matter, which has not been clearly examined in previous studies.

This study aims to examine what factors shape Muslim business operators’ attitudes towards pre- and post-value-added tax (VAT) implementation in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine what factors shape Muslim business operators’ attitudes towards pre- and post-value-added tax (VAT) implementation in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Design/methodology/approach

A longitudinal approach is employed to collect data from a total of 200 respondents, during both the pre-VAT implementation period and the post-VAT implementation period. A partial least squares structural equation modelling approach was performed to analyse the research.

Findings

Empirical findings revealed that challenges in implementing the VAT system were the primary predictors of Muslim business operators’ attitudes regarding the pre-VAT implementation period in the UAE because they were aware that the penalties associated with non-compliance would outweigh the costs incurred in preparing for the VAT. During the post-VAT implementation period, awareness was the strongest influence on Muslim business operators’ attitude because there are no income taxes imposed on businesses and individuals in the UAE.

Practical implications

The introduction of VAT in the UAE ignited great controversy on the part of Muslim business operators, who viewed the new tax system as a significant challenge or risk to their careers, especially when they realised that they would have to play a significant role in tax collection. VAT registration should be required for all businesses regardless of size since they are going to be the tax agents for the government. Indeed, the government should finalize policies and procedures on the penalties for non-compliance since such legalities could greatly contribute towards the acceptance of VAT.

Originality/value

Challenges prompted Muslim business operators to become more knowledgeable about VAT, whereas also developing a greater awareness and sense of preparedness regarding the implications of the system on their businesses. This discovery has advanced the theoretical understanding of the topic and its managerial implications.

Abstract

Purpose

Muslim consumers’ tendency to patronize stores with Halal images and purchase genuine Halal products is closely related to their effort to maintain Islamic identity, and this is further supported by many empirical data. Therefore, this paper aims to examine the relationships between attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control and Halal principle knowledge and their effect on Muslim consumers’ behavioral intention to patronize retail stores. On top of that, the mediating effect of Halal image on these relationships is also investigated.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were analyzed using multiple and hierarchical regression analysis to test the model via the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software among 480 valid samples of Muslim consumers.

Findings

Empirical results of the hierarchical regression analysis and the Sobel test revealed that there is a significant mediating effect of Halal image on the relationship between consumers’ attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioral control of consumers’ behavioral intention to patronize retail stores. Consumers with high attentiveness of the stores’ Halal image have a positive impression of the stores, a high motivation to patronize and, without any conditions, may follow through their intention to patronize the retail stores.

Practical implications

This research study offers guidelines to the retailers, marketers and the authorities in enhancing marketing strategies and the implementation of stricter Halal consumption laws. Hence, this research puts forward the following strategies: adopting Halal marketing strategy, promoting Halal images in retail stores and reinforcing Halal principle knowledge in the mind of consumers.

Originality/value

The main theoretical contribution relates to the insertion of the Halal image as a mediating variable in the matter of Muslim consumers’ behavioral intention to patronize Halal stores in Malaysia. An inspection of the effect of Halal principle knowledge on Muslim consumers’ behavioral intention to patronize retail stores is also rewarding.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the determinants that influence students’ decision-making and satisfaction in campus e-voting, and to investigate the moderating effect on students’ decision-making and satisfaction in campus e-voting between students with different levels of trust in the system.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employed a quantitative method and applied the use of self-administered questionnaires among university students who have at least experienced once in casting votes electronically in the past year during the campus e-voting period. The data were analysed using partial least square-structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) approach.

Findings

The PLS-SEM approach revealed that voters’ commitment to vote was the strongest determinant of students’ decision-making and satisfaction in campus e-voting. Voters’ high satisfaction with campus e-voting was based on the commitment and requirement of students of the university to vote. Compulsory voting was not a hassle for them in order to achieve campus development and sustainability. A moderation analysis revealed that the relative influence of commitment to vote on students’ satisfaction in campus e-voting was higher in the group with medium level of trust than among the group with high level of trust.

Practical implications

The election commission of the university and the university management should increase students’ turnout and commitment to vote during campus e-voting by outlining effective marketing strategies, campaigns and promotions across a number of digital platforms, including mobile SNS. They need to ensure that voters can sense their involvement is warranted and will continue to vote electronically in the next campus election.

Originality/value

The research yielded an exclusive perspective into students’ decision-making and satisfaction in campus e-voting. It also uncovered the influence of moderating effect of trust in the system in developing countries which is marginally concealed in the literature. The measurements produced can be used as a research tool for more exploratory and explanatory research related to political marketing among young adult voters.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of knowledge and attitude on firms’ commitment to Halal standard practices in a developing nation’s food sector. Additionally, the moderating effect of gender on this association is explored.

Design/methodology/approach

The partial least squares-structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) technique is used to analyse the results of a self-administered questionnaire completed by 200 internal Halal executive officers of multinational corporations and small and medium enterprises in a developing nation’s food sector.

Findings

The empirical findings reflect the significant role of attitude in influencing firms’ commitment to Halal standard compliance in the food sector and thereby contribute towards improving organisational performance. In more detail, male respondents were more likely than female respondents to have a favourable attitude toward Halal standards in the food industry. Additionally, a positive attitude can influence how employees are judged on their adherence to Halal standard processes. This encouraging outcome is the result of joint efforts by all government agencies, statutory bodies and private organisations involved in Halal practices.

Practical implications

Halal food producers should engender greater commitment to Halal standard practices within the buyer–supplier relationship due to the crucial nature of Halal concerns in food production. They should place a premium on strategic planning to safeguard the integrity of Halal food for consumption.

Originality/value

This study considerably advances the existing body of knowledge by applying the consumer decision model to explain the relationships between knowledge, attitude and firms’ commitment to Halal standard practices in the food industry of a developing nation, with gender serving as a moderating variable. The empirical findings addressed the research gap by offering noteworthy insight into a subject that has received minimal attention in prior studies.

Purpose

Muslims are obliged to make a contribution to the less fortunate through zakat, which is one of the means of wealth distribution. However, very few studies have investigated the behavioural intention of users toward social media networks that use creative animation for zakat online campaigns to promote zakat awareness in developing nations. The rich content of zakat in social media networks using creative animation could attract today’s youth to engage with zakat. This research aims to examine the factors that influence youths’ intention to use social media networks for understanding zakat online campaigns that use creative animation.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were analysed via Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS) version 18 to test the covariance-based structural equation modelling technique.

Findings

The results reveal that social influence has the greatest significant impact on youths’ intention to use social media networks for understanding zakat online campaigns that use creative animation. Officers in zakat institutions are supportive of the use of zakat campaigns that use creative animation on social media networks to enhance zakat understanding of the youth. Besides, individuals who are important to them would recommend accepting zakat online campaigns that use creative animation on social media networks to enhance their zakat understanding.

Practical implications

The social media networks of the zakat institutions should be designed with more creative, interactive and animated content to improve the quality of communication about the importance and benefits of contributing zakat. The content creator should use an inspiring emotional marketing strategy in their social media postings, interactive infographics and interactive videos because informational posts and emotionally positive content travel quicker than any other sort of content on social media through social sharing.

Originality/value

This study is unique and is noticeable as very few studies have investigated youths’ behavioural intention after viewing zakat online campaigns with creative animation on social media networks in a developing nation to promote zakat awareness. This platform has great potential to increase the engagement of working youth as zakat payers.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the impact of knowledge acquisition and dissemination on the sustainable performance of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Additionally, the mediating role of knowledge application in this relationship is investigated.

Design/methodology/approach

Data collected from 428 manufacturing SMEs in Malaysia were analyzed using the partial least squares structural equation modeling approach.

Findings

The results reveal that knowledge acquisition significantly impacts the sustainable performance of manufacturing SMEs, and knowledge application partially mediates this impact. Cutting-edge knowledge from within or outside the organization enables a deeper understanding of information regarding new products/services, a list of competing suppliers, consumer preferences and so on.

Research limitations/implications

This study combined the knowledge-based view theory and the triple bottom line framework into a unified conceptual framework and examined the impact of knowledge acquisition and dissemination on manufacturing SMEs’ sustainable performance as well as the mediating role of knowledge application on manufacturing SMEs’ sustainable performance.

Practical implications

Manufacturing SMEs should emphasize knowledge application in business operations and encourage employees to develop and enhance their knowledge acquisition and dissemination to leverage knowledge in ways that enhance business operations, produce new products and generate new knowledge assets.

Originality/value

This study is unique in that it highlights the partially mediated effects of knowledge application on the linkages between knowledge acquisition and manufacturing SMEs’ sustainable performance and the fully mediated effects of knowledge application on the association between knowledge dissemination and sustainable performance of manufacturing SMEs.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the criteria invoked by university students when choosing banking services, and determine whether male and female students rate the importance of the various criteria differently.

Design/methodology/approach

Data are gathered via a quantitative approach using a questionnaire, from 300 students of a public higher learning institution in the Federal Territory of Labuan, Malaysia. The students were all aged between 18 and 25 years old, and the data obtained are analysed using exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis findings, prior to using Statistical Package for Social Sciences to conduct a multiple discriminant analysis.

Findings

The multiple discriminant analysis revealed that bank services, people influences, electronic services, and banking security significantly affect students’ decisions when choosing banking services, and that female students attach more importance to each of these factors than do their male counterparts.

Practical implications

Banks as financial service providers should provide less complex and more user-friendly banking systems and services that require minimal mental and physical effort for students, and should ensure their compatibility with students’ banking norms and lifestyles.

Originality/value

The identification of the most noteworthy criteria for choosing banking services, particularly accounting for gender differences among university students, provides information to banks that allows them to improve their standards of service, offer more attractive incentives and increase their visibility, thereby attracting and retaining customers.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the structural relationship between the emotional and social support provided for individuals with caring responsibilities for elderly relatives, and the quality of care actually delivered. In addition, the moderating role of gender is explored.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative research design was utilised in which 200 usable questionnaires were collected from 250 respondents comprised of young adults who adopt a caregiving roles in respect of elderly parents or other close elderly relatives. The structural equation modelling (SEM) technique was selected for data analysis, and the Analysis of moment structure software version 21 was used.

Findings

The SEM results revealed that emotional support for caregivers was the most important predictor affecting the intergenerational care of multi-ethnic elderly people. Additionally, a moderation analysis revealed that the relative influence in this connection was more pronounced among female caregivers. An increase in the emotional support received by the recipient was found to enhance the level of the relationship, and to result in closer intergenerational ties in the care of the multi-ethnic elderly. Furthermore, the receipt of social support positively influences the judgement of an individual, and expands that person’s social network, which can subsequently have a favourable impact on the way in which one fulfils their caring role. The significant effect of social support provided for intergenerational caregivers in the context of the multi-ethnic elderly was higher in the group of male caregivers than in the group of female caregivers.

Practical implications

This study sends a strong message to policy-makers in developing countries about the need to consider within their National Policy for the Elderly, improvements in the national action plan for a holistic and integrated approach to ensure the well-being of caregivers and the elderly.

Originality/value

The results of the study help young adults to understand the importance of emotional and social support in boosting their relationships with parents and families and motivating intergenerational efforts in the care of the multi-ethnic elderly. Harmony within families is an important ideal in any circumstance, but in the scenario of ageing family members it may be even more essential to try to achieve it.
