Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze the effects of performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence and facilitating conditions on the behavioral intention of using mobile health applications, especially during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey was developed using an online survey platform and distributed to Indonesian consumers for three weeks, and 149 usable responses were obtained. The principal component analysis, linear regression and analysis of variance tests were performed to test the validity and reliability of the measurement model and the hypothesized relationships among constructs.

Findings

Surprisingly, unlike previous studies on IT adoption, the findings show that social influence has no significant impact on behavioral intention. Facilitating conditions have a very weak to almost no significant impact on behavioral intention to use mobile health applications.

Research limitations/implications

This research is conducted during pandemic COVID-19 where using mobile health apps is a must. In the future this research can be expanded as comparison study after the pandemic COVID-19 stated.

Practical implications

The result implies that digital technologies adoption intention is strongly affected by performance expectancy and effort expectancy, with performance expectancy as the most significant predictor. Nonetheless, the interaction of performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence and facilitating conditions influences behavioral intention significantly. Therefore, social influence and facilitating conditions are still important even with very insignificant effects.

Originality/value

To improve consumers’ behavioral intention to use mobile health applications, application providers should promote mobile health applications as useful telemedicine tools by primarily focusing on the application performance and usage experience.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aimed to explore the technostress effects on the students' expectancy in their academic performance. Three main factors were used as predictors, namely techno-complexity (TC), techno-insecurity (TIS) and techno-overload (TO), to measure the students' performance expectancy via the mediating effects of student satisfaction (SS).

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 234 survey-based online questionnaires were filled by students from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM). Based on the data, the hypothetical model was tested statistically using the Partial Least Square–Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM), specifically the Smart Partial Least Square (SmartPLS) version 3.3.2.

Findings

The results indicated that SS mediated the relationship between TC, TIS and performance expectancy. Nevertheless, the two predictors (TC and TIS) negatively affected SS, whereas SS positively affected the performance expectancy. The findings further revealed that reducing TC and TIS could increase SS and their expectancy to achieve better academic performance.

Practical implications

This study proposed that higher learning institutions provide an innovative and user-friendly platform for the online learning environment. Consequently, this improvement could increase SS with the online learning experience and motivate them to expect better academic achievement.

Originality/value

This study also contributed to the existing literature by building and testing a technostress model and articulating the inter-relations between SS and performance expectancy.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to use an extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model to investigate the intention to use blockchain from the accountant's point of view. The proposed model is expected to provide the necessary incentives for accountants to adopt blockchain. The authors build external constructs based on discussions of blockchain properties for accounting such as accounting information quality, job relevance and trust. In addition, the study also considers computer self-efficacy and compatibility as factors related to practitioners’ blockchain acceptance.

Design/methodology/approach

By using the developed online-questionnaire, the data is collected from the responses of 317 accountants working in listed enterprises in Vietnam. The main analyzes are performed by Smart partial least squares structural equation modeling technique to present both direct and indirect effects on the intention to use blockchain.

Findings

Experimental results provide many interesting and valuable things. First, performance and effort expectancy have a positive influence on intention to use blockchain, while social influence has a lower influence. Second, trust has a direct and positive effect on effort and performance expectancy, as well as intention to use blockchain. Quite surprisingly, accounting information quality has a positive effect on performance expectancy, while job relevance has a negative effect. Fourth, computer self-efficacy and compatibility have a positive effect on effort expectancy. It is more interesting that the intention to use blockchain has nothing to do with compatibility. The results of this study also show that performance and effort expectancy play a mediating role in the indirect effects of trust, computer self-efficacy and compatibility on intention to use blockchain.

Research limitations/implications

The study shows that accountants in Vietnam have a high intention to use blockchain. This implies that the Vietnamese Government and the professional association should design training programs or open training sessions on blockchain. Accountants can clearly understand the importance of blockchain in their work as well as the positive effect of blockchain on performance. They are consulted on how to use blockchain. They also perceive that using blockchain is not too difficult, and the acceptance of this technology will be higher. Additionally, universities should put triple-entry accounting into their teaching, so accounting students can improve their skills and knowledge relevant to blockchain to meet their career needs in the future.

Originality/value

The study proposes an extended UTAUT model with external constructs built on blockchain's effects on accounting. The model makes more sense in promoting the use of blockchain in accounting.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine: whether monetary, convenience, emotional, and social values were related to utilitarian and hedonic performance expectancies, which were then related to usage intention of augmented reality and motion capture (ARMC) e-shopping via a webcam and whether ego involvement and cognitive effort moderated the links between performance expectancies and usage intention.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed model was based on Prospect Theory and the Value-Attitude-Behavior hierarchy consumer decision model. The participants were US online apparel shoppers (n=806) and were drawn from an online consumer panel. Structural equation modeling was employed to test the proposed model and research hypotheses.

Findings

This study identified that utilitarian performance expectancy was positively related to usage intention. However, hedonic performance expectancy was not positively related to usage intention. Monetary, convenience, emotional, and social values had an indirect influence on usage intention, mediated by utilitarian performance expectancy. Ego involvement and cognitive effort moderated the link between utilitarian performance expectancy and usage intention. Managerial implications were discussed.

Originality/value

The results not only verify theoretical conceptions regarding usage intention of ARMC e-shopping but also provide beneficial insights into the implementation and development of ARMC e-shopping applications that use webcams and motion capture technology.

Abstract

Purpose

Technology acceptance, especially internet banking adoption, has become a vital issue in the business world today. The potential of this technology is enormous. The purpose of this study is to ascertain determinants of internet banking adoption using unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) and electronic service (e-service) quality, which accounts for changes in user’s intention to adopt internet banking.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors collected data from customers of commercial banks using structured questionnaires. The data were collected in four weeks in the beginning of September 2017. A two-stage approach of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) were used for data analysis.

Findings

The results reveal that integrated UTAUT model had significant influence on user intention to adopt internet banking. Findings of the SEM indicated that approximately 80 per cent of the variance in user intention to adopt internet banking was accounted by predictors. The study schematized that assurance is the most influential factor among all other technology and service quality factors. Additionally, performance expectancy and effort expectancy were found to be positive and significant mediator variables among website design, customer service and customer’s intention to adopt internet banking.

Practical implications

It is recommended that both website designers and managers should focus on technology and service quality factors to boost the confidence of internet banking users. Importance performance matrix analysis suggested that managers should provide assurance to internet banking users, so that they could maintain a long-term relationship with internet banking services. The study calls researchers to test the integrated UTAUT model in other electronic commerce (e-commerce) domains such as online booking or online shopping websites.

Originality/value

To the best of author’s knowledge, this study is the first that extend the UTAUT model with four e-service quality dimensions, namely, website design, customer service, assurance and reliability to investigate user’s intention to adopt internet banking in developing country context of Pakistan. More importantly, the mediating role of performance expectancy and effort expectancy is examined first time within integrated UTAUT model. Furthermore, the integration of UTAUT model contributes to the advancement of internet banking acceptance and offers useful insights to researchers and policy-makers on how to enhance internet banking acceptance among customers of commercial banks.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to analyse the adoption of fitness wearables by using the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT). The study analyses the relative weights and causal combinations of antecedent variables on use and intention to use fitness wearables.

Design/methodology/approach

The study design involves two stages: first, from the perspective of variable-oriented analysis, a structural equation model is tested using partial least squares (PLS) technique on a sample of 176 adopters and a second sample of 187 non-adopters. Second, from the perspective of case-oriented analysis, a fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) identifies causal combinations of variables that lead to use of wearables by adopters and intention to use by non-adopters.

Findings

PLS results show that performance expectancy and effort expectancy have high net effects on use and intention to use for adopters. FsQCA analysis shows that current users follow a streamlined path to adoption. High beliefs on performance expectancy and effort expectancy are the main influences of intention to use a fitness wearable for non-adopters. In contrast to adopters, non-adopters may follow a number of paths to intention to use through performance expectancy, effort expectancy or facilitating conditions. This insight was apparent only after analysing the data sets by using fsQCA.

Research limitations/implications

For sake of parsimony, this paper tested UTAUT model instead of the more complex unified theory of acceptance and use of technology 2.

Practical implications

Marketers in the fitness category can enhance use and intention to use by utilising not one but a combination of causal factors such as performance expectancy, effort expectancy and facilitating conditions. Wide societal deployment of wearables depends on performance and expectations.

Social implications

The widespread use of mobile devices depends on performance expectancy and effort expectancy. To transit to a real knowledge economy, co-creation should occur at early stages of product development so that these expectations are shared and better products be developed.

Originality/value

This paper offers a nuanced understanding of fitness wearable adoption by analysing adopters and non-adopters through variable- and case-oriented techniques. It complements the one-linear-path perspective with a number of alternative causal combinations of variables that lead to use and intention to use fitness wearables. While the causal path for adopters is unique, there are a number of causal combinations of antecedents that lead to high intention to use in potential adopters.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine critical determinants of US consumers' intentions to use mobile shopping services and to provide implications for retailers and mobile marketers in order to offer mobile shopping services that meet consumers' quality expectations.

Design/methodology/approach

A sample of 400 mobile services users drawn from a purchased consumer panel participated in an online survey. The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model was adapted and incorporated with attitude and hedonic performance expectancy. Two steps of structural equation modeling were used to validate the measurement model and test the hypothesized relationships.

Findings

The study found that utilitarian and hedonic performance expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions are critical determinants of US consumers' intentions to use mobile shopping services. Effort expectancy is a driving factor affecting utilitarian and hedonic performance expectancy of mobile shopping services. Further, the study found that the hedonic or entertainment aspect of mobile shopping services is the most critical driver of US consumers' intentions to use mobile shopping services.

Originality/value

The results of the study provide implications for retailers and mobile marketers in designing mobile shopping services based on an understanding of consumers' perceptions of new shopping capabilities.

Abstract

Purpose

Technology adoption is a great challenge in the banking sector of Pakistan. A recent report issued by state bank of Pakistan revealed that there is a squeak growth, only 3 percent, in internet banking adoption. In order to effectively delve into the issue of internet banking adoption, the purpose of this paper is to use unified theory of acceptance and use of technology factors, namely performance expectancy and effort expectancy and e-service quality (E-SQ), as theoretical lens for this study.

Design/methodology/approach

The research model was empirically tested using 398 valid responses from customers of commercial banks in Pakistan. The theoretical model was tested using structural equation modeling.

Findings

Findings indicate that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, website design, customer service, assurance and reliability have direct influence on user intention to adopt internet banking. Results revealed that approximately 79 percent of variance in user intention to adopt internet banking was explained by predictors. In addition, the mediating role of performance expectancy and effort expectancy among website design, customer service and user intention was also confirmed.

Practical implications

For researchers, this study provides a base of integrated technology model and it suggests using this model in other online domains such as mobile payment and online web-shopping for further refinement. For policymakers, understanding the key constructs is important to design, refine and implement new internet banking website that, in turn, will boost internet banking adoption trend among users of commercial banks.

Originality/value

This paper makes a unique contribution toward information system and services marketing literature. The study schematized that website design, customer service, assurance and reliability are the key dimensions of E-SQ and significantly influence the user intention to adopt internet banking.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to evaluate the users’ behavioral intention toward the acceptance and adoption of digital payment FinTech services in India. The study also compares the differences in Gen Y and Gen Z’s intention to adopt digital payment FinTech services.

Design/methodology/approach

The present study adopted both the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) and the technology acceptance model (TAM) as its theoretical base and also added financial literacy and customer satisfaction. The data was analyzed by applying structural equation modeling using SmartPLS 4.

Findings

The outcomes of the study imply that customer satisfaction, effort expectancy and performance expectancy had a significant effect on behavioral intention. Moreover, effort expectancy, performance expectancy and perceived enjoyment had a significant influence on customer satisfaction, and effort expectancy and performance expectancy is significantly influenced by perceived enjoyment, while self-efficacy significantly influenced perceived enjoyment. Also, financial literacy does not moderate the relationship between effort expectancy, performance expectancy, facilitating condition and behavioral intention. Furthermore, the association of effort expectancy → customer satisfaction; perceived enjoyment → customer satisfaction; and perceived enjoyment → effort expectancy is moderated by age factor.

Originality/value

This study contributes by developing a more cohesive and unified model for assessing users’ behavioral intention toward acceptance and adoption of FinTech services by adopting constructs from the UTUAT and TAM and incorporating financial literacy and customer satisfaction to expand and enhance the theoretical prospect of the existing literature.

Abstract

Purpose

Service providers have a vested interest in enhancing adoption of technologies that improve the customer service experience. Buoyed by this idea, this paper aims to explore Latin American consumers’ mobile payment (MP) adoption, conceptualized as bank-sponsored mobile wallets that facilitate payment at the point-of-purchase. This paper applies a revised unified theory of acceptance and use of technology 2 (UTAUT2) model as theoretical framework for this exploration.

Design/methodology/approach

To test the conceptual model of MP adoption in Latin America put forward in this paper, the authors used Colombia as a sample site and conducted two studies among a sample of consumers in this country. Completed questionnaires from 186 participants (Study 1) and 398 participants (Study 2) were used in data analyses, which were conducted using Mplus 8.4 and PROCESS.

Findings

In Study 1, performance expectancy, social influence, bank trust, confidence in MP system and consumer innovativeness all impact consumers’ MP use intention; and use intention impacts MP behavior. In Study 2, involving a wider sample, performance expectancy, effort expectancy, facilitating conditions, perceived quality of the MP system, bank trust, consumer innovativeness, consumer optimism and consumer insecurity all affect MP use intention; and use intention significantly impacts MP behavior. Across both studies, follow-up analysis showed that effort expectancy influences performance expectancy for MP and indirectly influences MP use intention through its impact on performance expectancy. Bank trust also indirectly affects MP use intention through its effects on system confidence. In Study 2, age did not affect MP use intention or MP use; however, education affected MP use.

Research limitations/implications

The theoretical underpinning for the conceptual model was the UTAUT2, and the results across the two studies support previous research in which this revised model has been useful in explaining technology adoption. Core elements of the UTAUT2 such as performance expectancy, effort expectancy, facilitating conditions and social influence had different impact on MP adoption in Latin America, depending on the sample. Technology readiness index motivators and inhibitors also aid understanding of MP adoption.

Practical implications

The research provides insights on the variables that members of the MP ecosystem in Latin America (e.g. banks and other service providers, card issuers) need to address in getting Latin American consumers to use MP.

Originality/value

This research extends the exploration of MP to a region of the world that has not been the focus of prior studies on the adoption of this technology and responds to calls by some researchers to increase research in this region. The conceptual models in the two studies also incorporate trust in the banks that are part of the MP ecosystem in Latin America and consumer overall confidence in this MP ecosystem. The results show that both these factors are influential in Latin American consumers’ adoption of MP. System confidence also mediates the relationship between bank trust and MP use intention.
