Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyse the way the internal resources and their attributes contribute to the competitive advantages in an intensive organisation in knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry in an emerging market.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a qualitative case study focused where the NVivo software was used for information analysis and thematic analysis.

Findings

The outcomes showed that from the VRIO framework (value, rarity, imitability and organisation), the plant and equipment and the technical knowledge of its workers are the resources that, due to their attributes, especially the rare, those that grant an advantage competitive position compared to other companies in its sector. Those findings highlight that the resource-based view (RBV) is a good approximation to explain the construction of competitive advantage (CA) and, in addition, the relevance of rare attribute in pharmaceutical companies was confirmed.

Practical implications

The study points out empirical evidence on the relevancy of RBV, from the VRIO framework and the competitive profile matrix (CPM) for the analysis of the management of organisations from the emerging market (economy) perspective. The study also provides competitive advantage analysis tools with which managers can identify strategic resources for their companies.

Originality/value

The VRIO framework and CPM were integrated in the study to analyse the role of internal resources and their attributes in achieving CAs. This integration is the first time that it has been carried out in companies in the context of an emerging market.

Abstract

Purpose

The efficiency of each of an organization’s individual workers determines its effectiveness. The study aims to explore the relationship between human resource management (HRM) practices and organizational effectiveness with employee performance as a mediating variable.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 800 police officers in the Greater Accra and Tema regions. The data were supported by the hypothesized relationship. Construct reliability and validity was established through confirmatory factor analysis. The proposed model and hypotheses were evaluated using structural equation modeling.

Findings

The results show that career planning and employee performance were significantly related. Self-managed teams and employee performance were shown to be nonsignificantly related. Similarly, performance management and employee performance were shown to be nonsignificantly related. Employee performance significantly influenced organizational effectiveness. The results further indicate that employee performance mediates the relationship between HRM practices and organizational effectiveness.

Research limitations/implications

The generalizability of the findings will be constrained due to the research’s police service focus and cross-sectional data.

Practical implications

The study’s findings will serve as valuable pointers for the police administration in the adoption, design and implementation of well-articulated and proactive HRM practices to improve the abilities, skills, knowledge and motivation of officer’s to inordinately enhance the effectiveness of the service.

Originality/value

By evidencing empirically that employee performance mediates the relationship between HRM practice and organizational effectiveness, the study extends the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to assess if the voluntary reporting of adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA), a widely used non-generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) measure, has effects on information asymmetry and value relevance and how the adjustments to GAAP earnings made to derive it contribute to these effects. This study focuses on firms from two countries with contrasting institutional settings, Canada and France.

Design/methodology/approach

Relying on multivariate analyses and using Heckman’s procedure to address the sample self-selection issue, this study first estimates the likelihood of a firm to report adjusted EBITDA. Then, this study examines if adjusted EBITDA, as well as the adjustments made to GAAP earnings to derive adjusted EBITDA (adjustments), affect a firm’s information asymmetry and its value. These adjustments are essentially GAAP-grounded items that are discarded by management to derive non-GAAP adjusted EBITDA. The dependent variables are share price volatility, as a proxy for information asymmetry, alongside market-to-book and stock market return as indicators of value.

Findings

In terms of the used sample, results suggest that Canadian firms are much more likely to report adjusted EBITDA than French firms. Chief executive officer (CEO) attributes (CEO power) appears to increase such likelihood. Moreover, for both Canadian and French firms, adjusted EBITDA is associated with reduced stock market volatility, an indication of lower information asymmetry, as well as higher market-to-book and returns, suggesting value relevance. The results also indicate that investors view the adjustments to GAAP earnings made by management to derive adjusted EBITDA as not value relevant (similar to noise). The GAAP-grounded elements that management discard to derive adjusted EBITDA actually increase information asymmetry.

Originality/value

This study adds to prior research on the interface between a CEO attributes and governance and non-GAAP reporting. This study also provides evidence that, despite very different institutional settings, non-GAAP reporting conveys relevant information to capital markets’ participants in both France and Canada. Hence, a country’s institutional setting may have a differential impact on the disclosure choice but not on the resulting value relevance of such disclosure. Finally, this study extends the non-GAAP literature by examining the value relevance of a widely used yet under-researched measure, adjusted EBITDA.

Abstract

Cross-border mergers and acquisitions (CBM&As) are a significant component of foreign direct investment (FDI), which in turn is at the heart of the international business strategy of multinational enterprises (MNEs). Given that CBM&As involve both a scale and an immediacy to raising financing that greenfield investments often lack, financially constrained firms are inhibited from undertaking CBM&As. The authors go further and show that these financing constraints impact the markets where MNEs target firms for CBM&A transactions. In the presence of such financing constraints, the determination of which markets are targeted by MNEs is directly related to the supply of capital in the target market and the institutional distance between the home and host markets. Evidence in support of the hypotheses is documented using firm-level data on CBM&As from Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries as well as Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa (BRICS) into every country globally for which data exist. The main implication of the research is that not only are financial constraints at the firm level important, but also that these constraints have a significant impact on the location of an acquisition target.

Abstract

Purpose

Over the years, the impact of the business cycle on firm strategy has been neglected in the area of strategic management and remains one of the most important but least developed research streams in management scholarship. Studies in this area are scattered across time and domains, therefore, there is a need to consolidate this fragmented literature to provide a comprehensive review and thus avenues for further research. This study aims to address this gap.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the systematic literature review (SLR) method is used to select and examine research articles in the area of firm responses and decisions during recession. This SLR examines 127 studies and carries out a thematic synthesis of the literature.

Findings

Based on the SLR and thematic synthesis of the literature, the themes identified in this study include – severity of recession impact (Theme 1); firm specific characteristics (Theme 2); resource adjustment activities (Theme 3); and firm performance (Theme 4), based on these themes and analysis this paper maps and proposes various relationships and linkages in this research domain that can be explored further for the development of scholarship in this field of study.

Originality/value

This paper fulfills the need for a systematic review of the extant literature on firms’ responses during recession. The study synthesizes literature and carries out a thematic analysis from 1980 till the period February 2024 to provide directions to advance this domain of literature.

Abstract

Purpose

Parent companies usually control a subsidiary’s operations and decision-making processes and policies. This study highlights how subsidiary research and development (R&D) contributes to a parent company’s global strategy formulation in the context of changes in the integrated responsiveness framework and transnational models.

Design/methodology/approach

We conducted an interview survey with 149 companies in Japan, of which 92 engaged in R&D activities. Ten companies, 9 R&D managers, and one managing director of different industrial companies were selected.

Findings

We identified four cases of how R&D subsidiaries incorporate their requirements into global strategies in the context of changes. Four methods of integrating R&D subsidiaries’ strategies with the parent company are explained. Further, we show that global strategy formulation should not be restricted to headquarters, as dilemmas occur within competing departments in the subsidiaries, which negatively impact innovation and performance. Digital transformation suggests the potential of a new subsidiary management model—the “silent headquarters”.

Research limitations/implications

We failed to discuss how headquarters’ R&D is implemented in strategy formulation. This is because the interview survey was conducted from the perspective of how subsidiary R&D is involved in integrated strategy formulation. Additionally, we did not investigate the actual performance achieved by integrated and non-integrated R&D organisations. Problems faced by subsidiaries in other locations, other departments within the subsidiary country, and the solutions to these problems, should be addressed in future research.

Practical implications

The practical implications of our findings relate to subsidiary-country relationships, inter-facility competition, and global strategy formulation. Active involvement of subsidiary R&D in strategy formulation, considering local requirements, can enhance subsidiary location advantages. Integrated strategies focused on global customers may overlook subsidiary R&D strengths and hinder innovation due to internal dilemmas and competition. Strengthening subsidiary R&D involvement and considering local context can promote innovation and flexibility beyond meta-national management. The concept of Silent HQ is suggested, reducing duplication and coordination issues through delegation and digital transformation.

Social implications

The implication was from the findings pertain to global strategy formulation after organisational integration, which was not previously elucidated by the transnational management and meta-national management models. It was clarified the existence of four cases for subsidiary R&D involvement in strategy formulation from the perspective of subsidiary R&D activities, addressing the difficulty of explaining the penetration of single strategy management to subsidiaries through integration alone. We revealed that there are the entire, apparent, moderate, and quiescent integration cases of R&D strategies from the perspectives of global integration strategy and the subsidiary country’s adaptation and that considering subsidiary R&D involvement models in global strategy formulation is important for maximising the performance of R&D subsidiaries in MNCs.

Originality/value

This study provides useful insight into the importance of centralisation to enhance performance. It addresses the research gap in the global strategy formulation process by R&D subsidiaries. R&D leaders at subsidiary levels strike a balance between global considerations and the host country. This concerns the need for initiative and value proposition to their local customers, combined with the operation of a transnational model. The findings clarify how high-performing subsidiary R&D leaders can engage in parent company strategy formulation.

Abstract

Purpose

Coordinating low-carbonization and digitalization is a practical implementation pathway to achieve high-quality economic development. Regions are under great emission reduction pressure to achieve low-carbon development. However, why and how regional emission reduction pressure influences enterprise digital transformation is lacking in the literature. This study empirically tests the impact of emission reduction pressure on enterprise digital transformation and its mechanism.

Design/methodology/approach

This article takes the data of non-financial listed companies from 2011 to 2020 as a sample. The digital transformation index is measured by entropy value method. The bidirectional fixed effect model was used to test the hypothesis.

Findings

The research results show that emission reduction pressure forces enterprise digital transformation. The mechanism lies in that emission reduction pressure improves digital transformation by promoting enterprise innovation, and digital economy moderates the nexus between emission reduction pressure and digital transformation. Furthermore, the effect of emission reduction pressure on digital transformation is more significant for non-state-owned, mature and high-tech enterprises.

Originality/value

This paper discusses the mediating role of enterprise innovation between carbon emission reduction pressure and enterprise digital transformation, as well as the moderating role of digital economy. The research expands the body of knowledge about dual carbon targets, digitization and technological innovation. The author’s findings help update the impact of regional digital economy development on enterprise digital transformation. It also provides theoretical guidance for the realization of digital transformation by enterprise innovation.

Abstract

Purpose

It is crucial to transform current enterprises to greener versions of them to reach the sustainable development goals. The first step of this transformation can be understanding comprehensively environmental performances of enterprises. This study presents a practical analysis for evaluation of factors affecting environmental performance of enterprises to call them as a “dark green.”

Design/methodology/approach

For this purpose, a detailed factor search was primarily performed and then the weights of them on environmental performance of the enterprises to support sustainable development were analyzed using fuzzy cognitive map (FCM) that incorporates the casual relationships between factors and represents the dynamics of the complex systems. The FCM was also supported with extended great deluge algorithm (EGDA), which is an evolutionary algorithm with high performance to increase robustness of the study.

Findings

The findings indicated that the most influential factors on environmental performance of an activist enterprise are “loyalty to regulations,” “digitalization level,” “tendency to produce environmentally friendly products/services,” “productivity efforts” and “fossil fuel consumption,” respectively. While the first four of them affect the environmental performance positively, fossil fuel consumption affects it negatively.

Practical implications

The results of this study can help companies to prioritize the critical points for their environmental perspectives, observe at which factors they are good or lacking and find where to start improvement.

Originality/value

This study is one of the pioneering studies to investigate the importance of criteria for a dark green business, considering 21 factors from different sources to make a detailed representation of corporate environmental sustainability.

Prototyping with affordable 3D printers empowers small businesses to create prototypes within a day and carry out multiple iterations of design, size, shape or assembly based on analytical results, bringing better products to market faster. This paper aims to turn the ideas into proofs of concept, advance these concepts to realistic prototypes and investigate the quality of printed prototypes prior to large-scale production.

Design/methodology/approach

The experimental approach focuses on the prototyping of portable medicine containers by Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), modifying the prototypes by adding auxiliary braille flags that indicate patient initials and dosing information, and performing the moisture permeation study as well as the stability study for model drug products (i.e. ibuprofen tablets, guaifenesin tablets, dextromethorphan HBr soft gel capsules).

Findings

The study shows that an affordable 3D printer helps to create functional and visual prototypes that give a realistic depiction of the design and offer physical objects that could be investigated for product quality and feasibility.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study was the first attempt to use a desktop FDM-based 3D printer to prototype portable medicine containers in a blister packet appearance with auxiliary braille flags that help validate early concepts and facilitate the conversation on refining product features in a rapid and affordable manner.
