Abstract

Multiagent systems, in which independent software agents interact with each other to achieve common goals, complete concurrent distributed tasks under autonomous control. Agent Communication has been shown to be an important factor in coordinating efficient group behavior in agents. Most researches on training or evolving group behavior in multiagent systems used predefined agent communication protocols. Designing agent communication becomes a complex problem in dynamic and large‐scale systems. In order to solve this problem, in this paper we propose a new application of existing training methods. By applying Genetic Programming techniques, namely Automatically Defined Function Genetic Programming (ADF‐GP), in combination with pheromone communication features, we allowed the agent system to autonomously learn effective agent communication messaging for coordinated group behavior. A software simulation of a multiagent transaction system aiming at e‐commerce usage will be used to observe the effectiveness of the proposed method in the targeted environment. Using the proposed method, automatic training of a compact and efficient agent communication protocol for the multiagent system was observed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to make a scientific contribution to web information retrieval (IR).

Design/methodology/approach

A multiagent system for web IR is proposed based on new technologies: Hierarchical Small‐Worlds (HSW) and Possibilistic Networks (PN). This system is based on a possibilistic qualitative approach which extends the quantitative one.

Findings

The paper finds that the relevance of the order of documents changes while passing from a profile to another. Even if the selected terms tend to select the relevant document, these terms are not the most frequent of the document. This criterion shows the asset of the qualitative approach of the SARIPOD system in the selection of relevant documents. The insertion of the factors of preference between query terms in the calculations of the possibility and the necessity consists in increasing the scores of possibilistic relevance of the documents containing these terms with an aim of penalizing the scores of relevance of the documents not containing them. The penalization and the increase in the scores are proportional to the capacity of the terms to discriminate between the documents of the collection.

Research limitations/implications

It is planned to extend the tests of the SARIPOD system to other grammatical categories, like refining the approach for the substantives by considering for example, the verbal occurrences in names definitions, etc. Also, it is planned to carry out finer measurements of the performances of SARIPOD system by extending the tests with other types of web documents.

Practical implications

The system can be useful to help research students find their relevant scientific papers. It must be located in the document server of any research laboratory.

Originality/value

The paper presents SARIPOD, a new qualitative possibilistic model for web IR using multiagent system.

Abstract

Purpose

Managing stakeholders' reciprocal interdependencies is always a challenging issue. Stakeholders need to find out different ways to communicate information and coordinate material flows during the supply chain processes. Many recent studies have advanced construction supply chain coordination from multiple perspectives. However, the field still lacks a comprehensive analysis to summarize existing research, to explicitly identify all the possible enablers for coordination and to investigate how the enablers can be carried out at the supply chain interfaces. To fill the gap, this study aims to conduct a systematic review in order to examine the relevant literature.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review process was conducted to identify and synthesize relevant publications (published in the past 20 years) concerning the coordination of construction supply chain functions. These publications were coded to link main research findings with specific enabler categories. In addition, how these enablers can be used at the interfaces across supply chain processes was reviewed with an in-depth analysis of reciprocal communications between stakeholders at design-to-production, production-to-logistics and production-to-site-assembly phases.

Findings

The coordination enablers were classified into three categories: (1) contractual enablers (including subtopics on relational contracts and incentive models), (2) procedural enablers (including subtopics on multiagent knowledge sharing systems and the last planner system) and (3) technological enablers (including subtopics on linked databases for design coordination, design for manufacturing software platforms and automated monitoring technologies). It was found that interfacing different functions requires a certain level of integration of stakeholders for quick response and feedback processes. The integration of novel contractual forms with digital technologies, such as smart contracts, however, was not adequately addressed in the state of the art.

Research limitations/implications

The scope of the systematic review is limited to the static analysis of selected publications. Longitudinal studies should be further included to sharpen the inductions of enablers considering organizational changes and process dynamics in construction projects.

Practical implications

Different enablers for coordination were summarized in a concise manner, which provides researchers and project stakeholders with a reinforced understanding of various ways to manage reciprocal interdependencies at different supply chain interfaces.

Originality/value

This study constitutes an important input for research on the construction supply chain by illuminating the thematic topic of coordination from inductively developed review processes, which included a holistic framing of the emerging coordination enablers and their use across supply chain functions. Consequently, it closes some identified knowledge gaps and offers additional insights to improve the supply chain performance of construction projects.

Purpose

The collective intelligence emerging from behaviors of social insects has become an inspiration source that is impossible to avoid; guiding researchers in various domains to solutions of insolvent problems by traditional approaches. These behaviors are made possible because of the interactions individual‐individual and individual‐environment, representing support on which cooperative work within the same group is based and allowing emergence at macroscopic level of sophisticated achievements. Many models were inspired by this new and very promising vision, to find simple rules, leading mobile, autonomous robots with limited capacities in their environment to realize tasks, like those of: browsing, collecting or self‐assembly. In this context, the purpose of this paper is to suggest a method, making global behavior evolve within an homogeneous agent‐robots community to accomplish heap‐formation task based on appointment principle in changing environment which can be very difficult. Control device, comparable to the functioning of cellular automaton containing sensory‐motor rules, is then used to arbitrate between some given elementary attitudes with which each agent‐robot initially is equipped.

Design/methodology/approach

Evolutionary approach using genetic algorithm based on reverse emergence principle seeks, then, for cellular automaton whose arbitration succeeds to realize this adaptive oriented grouping task.

Findings

Rules as simulation results obtained according to reactive model of multi‐agent systems are provided, compared with those found at the ants and commented.

Originality/value

Discovered rules are adaptive; it means when training ground becomes more difficult, agent‐robots become more flexible by decreasing thresholds conditioning rules application. If environment state continues to turn into harsh, robots are able to seek for another direction to start new heap formation somewhere else. Such zones are like Saharan region, airports or supermarkets.

Abstract

Purpose: Technological innovations and frameworks that provide a framework for unification have evolved to improve information exchange across organisational units and information security. These integration technologies share and communicate information using defined protocols and different data. Service-oriented architecture (SOA) is a significant emerging approach that enables modular design solution construction.

Methodology: These designs are beneficial when many apps operating on different architectures and networks need to connect. A well-defined strategy and company-specific guidelines are essential for ensuring the firm’s systematic adoption of such an architecture. The critical components of MASSOASCM ‘(Multi-Agent System Service Oriented Architecture Supply Chain Management’ are a multi-agent system (MAS), a service-oriented structure, and supplier management. The MASSOASCM model has been made, and a production unit has been made to show how it works.

Findings: It has been stated that it saves development costs, and inventory management, all of which are critical concerns in any company. Our goal is to create an inventory control approach that relies on MAS and SOA but also a simulation that demonstrates how it works and may enhance Supply Chain Management (SCM) productivity in a production plant.

Practical Implications: The SCM implementation comprises three different services: SCM, SOA, and MAS. These facilities are constructed, maintained, planned, and implemented individually before being brought together collectively using MAS and SOA techniques.

Abstract

Purpose

The authors propose a blockchain platform for managing clinical trial data to enhance data validity, integrity, trust and transparency in the pharmaceutical research process. The authors also provide an extensive review of how blockchain technology supports the business processes of clinical trials.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review was conducted to identify the existing applications of blockchain in pharmaceutical process management. A conceptual design for a blockchain infrastructure to address clinical trial challenges is developed by outlining the entire clinical trial value chain and identifying the coordination and communication among its stakeholders. A stakeholder analysis is conducted to ensure that the clinical trial processes satisfy the requirements and preferences of each stakeholder.

Findings

The proposed blockchain platform offers a promising solution for enhancing integrity, trust and transparency in the clinical trial process. Additionally, blockchain can help streamline communication and collaboration between stakeholders by enabling multiple parties to access and share data in real time, lowering the possibility of delays or errors in data analysis and reporting.

Practical implications

The proposed blockchain platform can benefit patients by empowering them to have better-controlled access to their data and by allowing researchers to maintain adherence to reporting requirements. Additionally, the platform can benefit granting agencies, researchers and decision-makers by ensuring the integrity of clinical trial data and streamlining communication and collaboration between stakeholders.

Originality/value

This study builds on existing blockchain applications in pharmaceutical process management by developing a blockchain framework that can address clinical trial concerns from an integrated perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the motivational drivers for knowledge sharing (KS) through the application of mobile social networking (MSN) and their influence on employee productivity in the Malaysian construction industry.

Design/methodology/approach

The data was collected by distributing a self-administered questionnaire among employees working in the construction industry. A total of 250 questionnaires were collected and analysed using partial least squares structural equation modeling. This study used a variety of analysis methodologies including correlation analysis, reliability and validity testing, as well as a structural model in evaluating the relationships between KS, motivational factors and influence on productivity.

Findings

The empirical results of this study reveal that utilitarian motivation is positively related to internal and external KS. Similarly, internal and external KS have a positive influence on productivity, while internal and external hedonic motivation does not show any significant relationship with productivity.

Research limitations/implications

Considering the paucity of evidence regarding the determinants of KS motivational drives on employee productivity in the Malaysian construction industry, this study enriches the social cognitive theory-based literature on KS.

Practical implications

This study provides some insights to the players in the construction industry in implementing the most appropriate KS promotion strategies that could potentially influence employee productivity. Organisations in the construction industry that place great emphasis on utilitarian motivation including competency, reward and incentives are more likely to have a better influence on KS and, in turn, positively impact employee productivity.

Originality/value

This study meaningfully contributes to enhancing the understanding of the motivational drivers for sharing knowledge on MSN and its influence on productivity. The findings of this study potentially assist construction practitioners in developing a holistic blueprint for managing their KS towards improving the overall productivity of their employees.

Abstract

Purpose

With the wide spread of the ubiquitous environment, it is necessary to provide adequate multimedia communication services for various users under various networked environments. In such situations, it is essential to organize multimedia software components dynamically to provide necessary services for effective service provision based on the system's operational environment during the run time of the system. The purpose of this paper is to propose a new scheme for observing and controlling behavior of the QoS‐aware agent organization, which provides a flexible QoS control of multimedia service components.

Design/methodology/approach

Two models are proposed in this paper: a flexible distributed system (FDS) model and a behavioral characteristics model (BCM), which were applied to the design of network middleware constructed as a QoS‐aware agent organization. Experiments were performed using the middleware prototype system.

Findings

Results confirmed that the proposed models provide an effective scheme for designers of multimedia communication services.

Originality/value

This paper shows that using the FDS model, a multiagent system can be designed and constructed systematically. In addition, using BCM, a multiagent system with flexible QoS control capability can deal with changes of the system's operational situations and thereby maintain the required QoS as well as its behavioral characteristics.
