Abstract

Purpose

In this paper, the authors study the critical success factors for deploying total productive manufacturing (TPM) programs in the Egyptian fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors study five Egyptian FMCG companies that have deployed TPM. Data were collected through interviewing group of middle managers in each company in addition to the TPM manager. Site visits were conducted for the purpose of data verification.

Findings

The research identified nine factors affecting the success of TPM deployment. The importance of each of those factors depends on the stage of the TPM deployment maturity at the company.

Originality/value

The main practical implication of this finding is to guide companies undergoing a deployment of TPM, particularly in developing countries, to focus on the factors that are most pertaining to the level of their deployment maturity.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify important factors those which constrain implementation and sustenance of lean strategies in aviation sector and ways to avoid slow attrition within annals of lean.

Design/methodology/approach

This research is exploratory in nature and survey methodology is used for assessing the post lean management implementation environment. The focus of study is cross-sectional, within aircraft industry based on the information collected through survey and a case study.

Findings

The reasons for the weak sustenance of lean initiative have been identified. The measures as undertaken in the case study implied a successful turnaround of specific department. Comparison with automobile industry indicates suggestions and pitfalls to be avoided with suitable illustration.

Research limitations/implications

The target of the study is the aircraft manufacturer and hence it has the limitation in terms of the scope. However, overall results are encouraging with the survey generating expected inputs and underline the need for similar research in the aerospace sector. The study has implications for managers in all types of industrial environment, especially in aviation, in the era of globalized lean supply chain establishment.

Practical implications

Inputs obtained are from both industrial research in a live environment and a case study which impacts lean management in industries.

Originality/value

This paper presents novel inputs regarding post lean implementation scenario in aviation sector, which has complicated internal processes. It also tries to establish factors relevant for any organization in assessing lean initiatives.

Purpose

Paper aims to determinate caking paper manuscript cause through studying of the manuscript components, bio-deterioration and physio-chemical deterioration factor. It will facilitate manuscripts and paper conservators to understand paper blocking and caking phenomenon.

Design/methodology/approach

The manuscript condition has been diagnosed by focusing on adhesion and fossilization regions. To achieve this, some methods of analysis and examination were used, such as visual examination, digital microscopy and scanning electron microscope were used to studying surface changes. X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared microscopy were used to determinate of cellulose crystallinity, ink composition and identify the binding medium.

Findings

The results revealed the use of cotton pulp, and calcium carbonate was among the fillers that were used to improve the properties of paper. The crystallization of cellulose was lower in the first and last papers than the papers located in the heart of the manuscript. The most important reasons that led to the papers caking was the presence of fungi A. niger, Cladosporium sp, Chaetomium sp, by secreting some enzymes in combination with some other factors such as difference variation in temperature and moisture.

Originality/value

All deterioration factors participate with each other until rule the damage circle of the papers because one factor alone cannot stick the papers. It was inferred from the examinations and analyzes that were conducted for the samples.
