Abstract

Purpose

The principal objective of this research is to delve into the intricate dynamics surrounding the contentious exploitation of incentive-based marketing tactics within online food delivery (OFD) services in Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

The data collection process involved the development of an online survey questionnaire rooted in quantitative research methodology. To ascertain a representative sample, a probability-based simple random sampling approach was undertaken, and the data was gathered using the Google Form survey tool. To empirically test the proposed model, data was collected from a sample of 350 participants. The hypotheses were evaluated using the PLS-SEM technique to scrutinize the relationships within the model and assess potential variations across different groups.

Findings

The results delineated that all the hypotheses were supported; however, Irritation was rejected and unable to have an influence on consumer attitudes and purchase behaviour towards mobile advertising.

Practical implications

By offering incentives, marketers can foster greater acceptance of advertising among consumers, thereby enhancing their engagement and interaction with mobile advertising in the OFD services.

Originality/value

The advancement of mobile technology has facilitated the emergence of innovative marketing tactics, enabling firms and brands to establish direct communication channels with prospective consumers.

Abstract

Purpose

Message stream advertising (MSA) has become an increasingly popular option for advertising on mobile social media. However, MSA is often avoided by consumers, and this avoidance deserves more research attention. The purpose of this study is therefore to identify the underlying mechanism and key variables that affect consumer avoidance of MSA in the context of mobile social media.

Design/methodology/approach

A face-to-face survey was administered to current mobile users of WeChat (N = 438). Structural equation modeling was conducted to test the relationships in the research model.

Findings

Results revealed that mobile consumers employ mechanical avoidance methods (i.e. zipping, muting and zapping) against MSA. The findings also demonstrated that advertising intrusiveness (stimulus) is directly linked to negative emotions, perceived entertainment and sense of control (organism), which, in turn, relate to MSA avoidance (response).

Originality/value

The study contributes to the MSA avoidance literature by using the stimulus-organism-response model to deepen the understanding of consumers' MSA avoidance on mobile social media, and it suggests important managerial implications for advertising practitioners and platform operators.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop and empirically examine a comprehensive model describing the effects of perceived characteristics of mobile coupon services on attitudes and the effects of personal innovativeness and subjective norm (SN) on behavioral intention (BI) to use such services. Gender differences in the process of mobile coupon service adoption were also investigated.

Design/methodology/approach

The online survey was distributed to US adult consumers (age 19 and over) recruited through an online sampling service company. A total of 657 useable responses were obtained.

Findings

The results showed that in general, compatibility and enjoyment are stronger determinants of attitudes toward mobile coupon adoption than ease of use and usefulness of mobile coupon services. Innovativeness and SN showed strong effects on BI to use mobile coupon services. Furthermore, the results demonstrated gender differences in the relative strength of perceived characteristics that affect attitudes toward mobile coupon services. Enjoyment and usefulness of mobile coupons appear to be more important for females than males while perceived ease of use is a stronger determinant for males.

Originality/value

The results of this study furthers understanding of the commercial use of mobile coupons by providing insights into the factors determining consumer adoption of such mobile services.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine critical determinants of US consumers' intentions to use mobile shopping services and to provide implications for retailers and mobile marketers in order to offer mobile shopping services that meet consumers' quality expectations.

Design/methodology/approach

A sample of 400 mobile services users drawn from a purchased consumer panel participated in an online survey. The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model was adapted and incorporated with attitude and hedonic performance expectancy. Two steps of structural equation modeling were used to validate the measurement model and test the hypothesized relationships.

Findings

The study found that utilitarian and hedonic performance expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions are critical determinants of US consumers' intentions to use mobile shopping services. Effort expectancy is a driving factor affecting utilitarian and hedonic performance expectancy of mobile shopping services. Further, the study found that the hedonic or entertainment aspect of mobile shopping services is the most critical driver of US consumers' intentions to use mobile shopping services.

Originality/value

The results of the study provide implications for retailers and mobile marketers in designing mobile shopping services based on an understanding of consumers' perceptions of new shopping capabilities.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose and test an integrated model of mobile advertising taking into consideration the unique characteristics of Asian consumers.

Design/methodology/approach

The survey research method has been used to collect data among young mobile users in China and South Korea. A structural equation model (SEM) technique is employed to analyze the data.

Findings

The results show that Chinese and South Korean consumers share similar beliefs and attitudes toward mobile advertising. Perceived informational usefulness, perceived entertainment usefulness, perceived ease of ease and credibility emerge as significant belief factors positively influencing attitude in both countries. Irritation, on the other hand, negatively predicts attitude. Attitude toward mobile advertising and subjective norm emerge as the strong predictors of consumers’ intention to use mobile advertising in both countries. The effects of perceived social usefulness on attitude and incentive on intention to use demonstrate different patterns between the Chinese and South Korean samples.

Practical implications

The findings are particularly relevant to international marketing managers. To effectively reach Asian consumers through mobile, increasing credibility and entertainment values are the keys. Meanwhile, providing relevant information in easy to use format is also an important issue.

Originality/value

Based on the established advertising theories, this study proposes an integrated model to examine how beliefs, attitude and other influencing factors affect mobile advertising effectiveness among Chinese and South Korean consumers. This research provides insights into the uniqueness and effectiveness of the new mobile medium as opposed to traditional media. Furthermore, this study deepens the understanding of advertising hierarchy effects in an international setting by examining similarities and differences between China and South Korea. Most of existing cross-cultural studies choose cultures that are sharply contrast to gain significant findings and to support established cross-cultural theories. It is also very important for researchers to examine cultures that are relatively similar to gain a better understanding of the impact of culture. The study answers such a call.

Abstract

Purpose

Smartphone adoption by consumers is increasing exponentially, and presents marketers with many new opportunites to reach and serve customers. However, are consumers ready for mobile marketing through their smartphones? This study aims to investigate consumers' willingness to accept marketing through their smartphones.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is based on an online survey of 428 respondents. The data is analyzed through ANOVA and regression analysis.

Findings

The results indicate that consumers' shopping style, brand trust, and value are key motivations for engaging in mobile marketing through their smartphones. Further research should focus on specific tactics marketers use to engage customers beyond marketing messages, that is, how they engage customers in dialogue to build relationships, encourage purchases and build loyalty. This could reveal how customers really want to engage in mobile marketing.

Research limitations/implications

This research adds to the growing body of evidence on acceptance of mobile marketing.

Practical implications

This study found that successful enagement of customers in mobile marketing requires that marketers focus their strategies and tactics around value creation; getting customers to engage with their brand in an authentic way; and respecting customers' shopping style, i.e. engaging customers the way they want to be engaged. Marketers must listen to their customers and develop appropriate strategies rather than simply adapting existing marketing strategies.

Originality/value

The topic of mobile marketing through smartphones is important to both marketing executives and marketing researchers. To date, this topic has attracted little research attention and marketing executives are simply basing their decsions on anecdotal case studies and reports in the popular press. This study contributes to fulfilling the need for research evidence.

Abstract

Purpose

Although there is evidence that adoption of mobile shopping has been slow, the increased functionality offered by smart phones offers significant potential for the development of marketing and retailing through the mobile channel. The purpose of this paper is to add to knowledge on consumer shopping behaviour through mobile devices by exploring attitudes to the use of mobiles in shopping, the use of mobile phones at different stages in the consumer decision-making process, the impact of involvement on the mobile consumer decision-making process and mobile shopping location.

Design/methodology/approach

An online panel survey was conducted with a UK panel of nationally representative consumers. The survey collected data in respect of the following products that were ranked on level of involvement on the basis of the importance and effort consumers' associated with their purchase: bread (lowest), washing powder, DVD, footwear, phone and TV (highest).

Findings

Use of mobiles for shopping is significant, but remains lower than use of computers in shopping. In general, respondents were more positive regarding their use of computer shopping than they were in relation to their use of a mobile. In using their mobile phone in shopping, respondents value its convenience and accessibility. There is higher use of the mobile phone in the information search and consideration of alternatives phases, than in the purchase transaction. The extent of use of mobile devices in the decision-making process is higher with higher involvement products, in relation to all stages in the decision-making process. The most frequent location for the use of their mobile in shopping is at home, which is consistent with the finding that the highest level of use of mobiles occurs in the information search and consideration of alternatives phases. Recommendations are offered for retailers and for further research.

Originality/value

This is the first research to explore the use of mobile phones in different stages in the consumer-decision-making process across a number of product categories.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate US consumers' adoption of mobile services from the perspectives of channel extension (mobile vs internet) as well as with considerations of ethnic and gender difference. Specifically, this paper examines the effects of gender and ethnicity in consumers' current usages in different types of mobile services, the relationships between consumers' current internet and mobile service usages, and how current usages of internet and mobile services predict future intentions to use mobile services.

Design/methodology/approach

Online survey method was employed to collect the data. A total of 492 responses were obtained from current mobile users.

Findings

The mobile services most (e.g. sending and receiving text and picture messages, checking e‐mail) and least used (e.g. gambling, educational services) were similar between both male and female respondents, yet male respondents showed a higher use of mobile services. Among ethnic groups, African Americans were the most engaged users of all mobile services, and European Americans were the least engaged. In certain service categories (e.g. informational services related to business/finance), both gender and ethnicity were shown to have significant effects on consumers' current usages of both the internet and mobile services and intentions to use mobile services.

Practical implications

Gender‐ and ethnic‐specific marketing strategies should be based on the types of mobile services. Special attention should be paid to African Americans that have expressed great interests in using the services that are offered through mobile devices (e.g. informational services related to health and business/finance, payment/billing services, and purchasing products). Understanding current internet use of each mobile service is a key to the success of the potential use of mobile services.

Originality/value

There is a lack of previous research addressing consumer issues relevant to specific types of mobile services. This paper provides a meaningful insight into consumer adoption of various types of mobile services from the perspectives of channel extension (mobile vs internet) as well as ethnic and gender difference.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to classify and organize the accumulated knowledge about mobile shopping (m-shopping) as revealed in the present literature regarding retail. A classification framework has been applied, consisting of three categories: online distribution channels, advanced technology for in-store shopping, and technology perspectives.

Design/methodology/approach

A term-based search method was applied in which the literature was restricted to peer-reviewed articles in English-language journals of a certain date and specific online databases. Finally, 81 peer-reviewed articles, published between 2000 and 2012 around the world, were taken into account.

Findings

Considering the retail environment, the interest in m-shopping for both advanced technology for in-store shopping and for the online distribution channel has increased continuously over the last decade. Moreover, while studies have mostly explored the consumers’ acceptance and reactions to m-shopping themes, the technology perspective is still being researched.

Research limitations/implications

Due to the selected term-based search method, the number of identified publications is limited. Additionally, the selected framework requires a corresponding assignment to an explicitly stated topic, which was not always possible.

Originality/value

As far as the author knows, this paper provides the first systematic review of m-shopping literature, which not only helps to organize retail-based literature, but also investigates significant gaps on this topic, thus facilitating future research.

Abstract

Purpose

By using Technology Acceptance Model, the purpose of this study is to investigate how the perceived usefulness and ease-of-use of shopping mobile apps affects consumer’s flow experience, attitude, impulsive buying tendency (IBT) and urge to impulsive buying on halal fashion products.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative study was done on 357 Indonesian online shoppers to find out how perceived usefulness and ease of use of mobile shopping apps affect impulsive buying tendencies and urges on halal fashion products. Flow experience and attitude were used as mediating variables, and the research hypotheses were tested using Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM).

Findings

This study confirmed significant positive relationships between perceived usefulness and ease of use of mobile apps, flow experience, attitude, IBT and urge to impulsive buying. The results of this study show that perceived usefulness and ease of use influence flow experience. Ease of use also influences attitude, but perceived usefulness did not impact attitude. In addition, flow experience did not impact attitude. However, both flow experience and attitude influence IBT. Furthermore, IBT significantly mediated flow experience and attitude into urge to impulsive buying.

Research limitations/implications

This study only captured consumers in one country, so its results cannot be generalized to other nations. Random sampling may limit result generalization. In this study, three mobile shopping applications were investigated and the results would have been different if more mobile shopping applications were investigated.

Originality/value

The study gives a better understanding of how the perceived usefulness and ease of use of mobile shopping apps affect a consumer's tendency and urge to impulsive buying on halal fashion products by using flow experience as mediating variable.
