Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to review the adaptation and application of mindfulness‐based psychotherapeutic practices for individuals with intellectual disability, the population most at risk for mental health and behavioral challenges.

Design/methodology/approach

Provided is an overview of the adaptation and utilization of these practices in the treatment of anxiety and mood disorders, and maladaptive behavior in individuals with intellectual disabilities. It also explores current research related to mindfulness‐based stress management for parents and caregivers of individuals with intellectual disability.

Findings

Current research and practice supports that mindfulness‐based psychotherapeutic practices are clinically effective in the treatment of anxiety, mood, stress, aggression, and self‐injury in individuals with intellectual disabilities, and enhanced coping and stress management in their parents and caregivers.

Practical implications

The effective, experiential, and skills‐based practices of mindfulness‐based psychotherapy make it easily adaptable and applicable for use with individuals with intellectual disabilities who have varying mental health and behavioral challenges.

Originality/value

Very little has been published on the adaptation and application of mindfulness‐based psychotherapeutic practices for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Given the mental health and behavioral challenges faced by this population, there is a great need for individuals with intellectual disabilities to have effective and practical treatment such as mindfulness‐based psychotherapy. Further research and utilization of these practices with this population is needed.

Abstract

Since more than 450 million people worldwide suffer from mental disorders, interventions that promote mental health have been called for. Mindfulness-based coping (MBC) is an intervention based on coping skills from cognitive behavioral therapy integrating mindfulness practices. The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of the MBC program for psychiatric outpatients. The study employed a mixed research method with a qualitative approach using semi-structured patient interviews and clinical assessments from patients' therapists and a quantitative approach using instruments measuring mindful coping, mental ill health, and life satisfaction. The study sample included 38 psychiatric outpatients from a district psychiatric outpatient service in Norway. Results suggested that although use of the different skills varied, participants had a positive experience with the program and positive changes in psychological functioning were observed. Findings provide knowledge regarding the design of interventions integrating mindfulness to promote more adequate psychological coping.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to review the concept of mindfulness and to show how it can be extended from psychology into management. Also, it seeks to introduce a new model of the psyche which incorporates two types of mindfulness (“meta‐mindfulness” and “supra‐mindfulness”) which can be used by managers to increase their capacity to handle emotional reactivity and to reduce stress.

Design/methodology/approach

It is proposed that the “meta‐self” or Managing Ego plays a key role in emotions management and stress reduction by using meta‐mindfulness to actively monitor one's sub‐selves which react with the external world. The current approach also postulates that an individual's “supra‐self” or inner‐observer is crucial in reducing stress by passively exercising neutral observation of all psychic activity via the above‐mind state of supra‐mindfulness.

Research limitations/implications

The paper indicates how the proposed models of the psyche and of the dynamics of mindfulness in emotions and stress management can be tested empirically in future management research.

Practical implications

Mindfulness techniques are recommended for use by managers in practice to avoid emotional reactivity and to manage stress.

Originality/value

The present approach builds on existing theory to provide new constructs and models that help to explain the dynamics of mindfulness in managing emotions and in reducing stress.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review quantitative research since 1999 evaluating the effectiveness of democratic therapeutic community (DTC) treatment for individuals with personality disorders (PD) with reference to interpersonal and offending risk outcomes.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic search resulted in the review of ten studies. All of the studies investigated DTCs treating PD in community, inpatient residential and forensic settings. Only peer-reviewed, English-language articles employing a quantitative design were included.

Findings

The majority of studies were conducted poorly and of low methodological quality, with limitations located in the representativeness of participants, limited use of control and comparison groups, follow up periods and controls for confounders. Heterogeneity remained in use of measures and limited consideration was given to the validity of interpersonal measures used. While improved interpersonal outcomes post DTC treatment were noted in forensic and residential settings, results were mixed in day and mini TC settings. Inconsistent findings in offending risk outcomes were also indicated. A study with increased methodological rigour indicated residential treatment had limited effects on interpersonal outcomes, when compared to combination treatment (residential TC and step-down treatment).

Originality/value

The study provided an evaluation of the limitations of DTC research across a range of settings and highlighted a combination of residential TC and step-down treatment may achieve superior outcomes to residential TC treatment alone in a community inpatient population. Recommendations are made for future research to contribute to the treatment of PD.

Purpose

This study aims to conduct a thorough evaluation to offer a modern overview of mindfulness’s performance and conceptual framework in leadership.

Design/methodology/approach

This study reviews the literature on mindfulness in leadership using bibliometric analysis and systematic review techniques. This study delves into the most significant writings, leading journals, authors, organizations and nations contributing to the field and the selected methodologies and research contexts for mindfulness in leadership.

Findings

This study unveils three areas of mindfulness in leadership: leadership mindfulness interventions and practices, essential outcomes of mindfulness practice and emergent styles and mindfulness.

Originality/value

This study significantly expands the Baer et al. (2006) review of mindfulness to offer new views over their manual qualitative analysis based on a smaller collection of literature while adding the leadership perspective. Using bibliometric analysis, this study especially carries out performance analysis and scientific mapping of the collection of research publications on mindfulness in leadership. Additionally, more current studies are included to update the field.

Abstract

Purpose

Mindfulness is the human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we're doing. This study explores on the impact of mindfulness on different elements of knowledge management, knowledge creation, knowledge sharing and knowledge hiding.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors undertake an inductive reasoning approach whereby they try to generate themes from specific observations and conceptualize the theory of mindfulness and knowledge transfer.

Findings

This study finds out that mindfulness critically facilitates an open environment and enhances the clarity of thought which aids in effective knowledge creation. Such a realistic understanding about the present scenario encourages employees to share knowledge and equips them to collaborate and effectively work in teams. Surprisingly, this study also finds that mindfulness increases the result orientation to the extent that employees tried to hide knowledge from their co-workers targeting certain self-desired outcomes. In other words, similar to knowledge creation and knowledge sharing, mindfulness increases agenda-based knowledge hiding.

Originality/value

The theory of mindfulness and knowledge transfer states that mindfulness increases knowledge creation, knowledge sharing and agenda-based knowledge hiding.

Abstract

Interest in employee mindfulness has increased dramatically in recent years, fueled by several important conceptual articles, numerous studies documenting the benefits of mindfulness for employee outcomes, and the adoption of mindfulness-based practices in many Fortune 500 organizations. Despite this growing interest, the vast majority of research on employee mindfulness has taken an intrapersonal focus, failing to appreciate the ways in which mindfulness may enhance work-related relational processes and outcomes. The authors explore possible associations between mindfulness and relationally oriented workplace phenomena, drawing from interdisciplinary scholarship examining mindfulness in romantic relationships, child–parent relationships, patient–healthcare provider relationships, and student–teacher relationships. A framework is proposed that links mindfulness to three distinct relationally oriented processes, which are expected to have downstream effects on work-related relational outcomes. The authors then take the proposed framework and discuss possible extensions to a variety of unique workplace relationships and discuss critical next steps in advancing the relational science of mindfulness.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is mainly to present a general review of third generation cognitive-behavioural therapies (CBTs), and to debate whether these approaches are applicable to persons with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD).

Design/methodology/approach

Despite the lack of consistent literature focused on this population, the authors have considered the available general literature on the third generation of CBTs and analysed core issues of the processes within the context of intellectual disabilities and Autism spectrum disorder.

Findings

The evidence from typical developing population studies and the emerging literature specific to people with NDD is convincing, but there is a need for studies exploring how and when these therapeutic approaches can be applicable. Two behavioural approaches of third generation therapies – acceptance and commitment therapy and mindfulness-based CBT – appear to have the most potential to be adapted for robust intervention for the broad spectrum of persons with NDD.

Research limitations/implications

The number of studies and methodologies applied are a clear limitation and the present paper is only exploratory.

Originality/value

The paper supports clinicians to use the emerging protocols, and to replicate and implement procedures and techniques.
