Abstract

Using examples of flexible mechanisms, demonstrates that while the Newmark method is unstable for nonlinear dynamics, time step refinement could in some cases lead to even earlier onset of instability in the form of a blown‐up response. As a remedy, develops a plane finite beam element based on the Simo‐Vu Quoc formulation for dynamics and integrates it with an energy‐conserving midpoint time‐stepping rule for solving problems in nonlinear dynamics. Shows that this combination produces a consistently stable and accurate dynamic analysis method even for large time steps.

Abstract

Purpose

Semi-implicit type cutting plane method (CPM) and fully implicit type closest point projection method (CPPM) are the two most widely used frameworks for numerical stress integration. CPM is simple, easy to implement and accurate up to first order. CPPM is unconditionally stable and accurate up to second order though the formulation is complex. Therefore, this study aims to develop a less complex and accurate stress integration method for complex constitutive models.

Design/methodology/approach

Two integration techniques are formulated using the midpoint and Romberg method by modifying CPM. The algorithms are implemented for three different classes of soil constitutive model. The efficiency of the algorithms is judged via stress point analysis and solving a boundary value problem.

Findings

Stress point analysis indicates that the proposed algorithms are stable even with a large step size. In addition, numerical analysis for solving boundary value problem demonstrates a significant reduction in central processing unit (CPU) time with the use of the semi-implicit-type midpoint algorithm.

Originality/value

Traditionally, midpoint and Romberg algorithms are formulated from explicit integration techniques, whereas the present study uses a semi-implicit approach to enhance stability. In addition, the proposed stress integration algorithms provide an efficient means to solve boundary value problems pertaining to geotechnical engineering.

Abstract

Accounting, particularly in the area of cost variance analysis, contains a great deal of ambiguity due to imprecise or ill‐defined control terms. Cost accountants must continually incorporate good sense and professional judgment in the accounting process to overcome that ambiguity. Because of the construction of accounting expert systems, no ambiguity is present in the facts or rules, thereby excluding human reasoning and analysis of feedback within those systems. The use of fuzzy sets to build fuzzy control systems provides a method to incorporate ambiguity into expert systems, allowing expert systems to more closely emulate the complex human decision making process.

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the implicit midpoint rule (IMR) of nonexpansive mappings in 2- uniformly convex hyperbolic spaces and study its convergence. Strong and -convergence theorems based on this algorithm are proved in this new setting. The results obtained hold concurrently in uniformly convex Banach spaces, CAT(0) spaces and Hilbert spaces as special cases.

Abstract

Purpose

Order picking is one of the most costly logistics processes in warehouses. As a result, the optimization of order picking processes has received an increased attention in recent years. One potential source for improving order picking is the reduction of picker blocking. The purpose of this paper is to investigate picker blocking under different storage assignment and order picker-route combinations and evaluate its effects on the performance of manual order picking processes.

Design/methodology/approach

This study develops an agent-based simulation model (ABS) for order picking in a rectangular warehouse. By employing an ABS, we are able to study the behaviour of individual order pickers and their interactions with the environment.

Findings

The simulation model determines shortest mean throughput times when the same routing policy is assigned to all order pickers. In addition, it evaluates the efficiency of alternative routing policies–storage assignment combinations.

Research limitations/implications

The paper implies that ABS is well-suited for further investigations in the field of picker blocking, for example, with respect to the individual behaviour of agents.

Practical implications

Based on the results of this paper, warehouse managers can choose an appropriate routing policy that best matches their storage assignment policy and the number of order pickers employed.

Originality/value

This paper is the first to comprehensively study the effects of different combinations of order picker routing and storage assignment policies on the occurrence of picker blocking.

Abstract

The computation of structures moving in central force fields generally requires long‐time integration including geometrically nonlinear behavior (large rotations) as such, e.g. satellite structures move for a long time. To achieve a numerically stable computation the energy momentum method which fulfills linear and angular momentum as well as energy conservation within the time step is chosen for the time integration. The focus in the contribution is on Hamiltonian systems. A formulation for the gravitational force in a central force field as external force on a rigid or flexible satellite is given. The presented formulation enables the computation of the exact spatial distribution of the gravitational forces acting on a structure using the FE‐discretization which is necessary to analyze, e.g. the orientation of a satellite in a gravitational field. The fulfillment of the conservation laws within the time step is proved. The necessity for considering the spatial distribution of the gravitational forces is discussed based on numerical examples.

Both the classical form of the constitutive law and the convex analysis formulation are presented. The relation between the mid‐point time integration and the extremal path theory is discussed. Extremal properties for the finite‐step solution are formulated.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present two optimization methodologies based on interval branch‐and‐bound algorithm.

Design/methodology/approach

These techniques decrease the total time of computation, even in spite of discrete nature of some of the design variables. Computational experiments performed on multivariable optimization problem reveal great accuracy and technical validity of developed approaches. As an example, the optimal design of the induction machine (IM) was treated, where the aim was to find the set of the most efficient and, at the same time, cheapest in the manufacturing configurations.

Findings

In this paper, two approaches were developed for resolving the problem of optimal design of IM with discrete variables. The strategy of constructing the meta‐models is utilized and put in practice. The methods show relatively high efficiency and robustness of obtained results.

Originality/value

These approaches are the core technics of the developed industrial application, which help identify the set of optimal configurations of IM with the criteria of optimality such as total cost of manufacturing and the efficiency of IM.

Abstract

Numerical solutions in computational plasticity are severely challenged when concrete and geomaterials are considered with non‐regular yield surfaces, strain‐softening and non‐associated flow. There are two aspects that are of immediate concern within load steps which are truly finite: first, the iterative corrector must assure that the equilibrium stress state and the plastic process variables do satisfy multiple yield conditions with corners, Fi(σ, q) = 0, at discrete stages of the solution process. To this end, a reliable return mapping algorithm is required which minimizes the error of the plastic return step. Second, the solution of non‐linear equations of motion on the global structural level must account for limit points and premature bifurcation of the equilibrium path. The current paper is mainly concerned with the implicit integration of elasto‐plastic hardening/softening relations considering non‐associated flow and the presence of composite yield conditions with corners.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate and review the impact of the use of statistical quality control (SQC) development and analytical and numerical methods on average run length for econometric applications.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used several academic databases to survey and analyze the literature on SQC tools, their characteristics and applications. The surveys covered both parametric and nonparametric SQC.

Findings

This survey paper reviews the literature both control charts and methodology to evaluate an average run length (ARL) which the SQC charts can be applied to any data. Because of the nonparametric control chart is an alternative effective to standard control charts. The mixed nonparametric control chart can overcome the assumption of normality and independence. In addition, there are several analytical and numerical methods for determining the ARL, those of methods; Markov Chain, Martingales, Numerical Integral Equation and Explicit formulas which use less time consuming but accuracy. New ideas of mixed parametric and nonparametric control charts are effective alternatives for econometric applications.

Originality/value

In terms of mixed nonparametric control charts, this can be applied to all data which no limitation in using of the proposed control chart. In particular, the data consist of volatility and fluctuation usually occurred in econometric solutions. Furthermore, to find the ARL as a performance measure, an explicit formula for the ARL of time series data can be derived using the integral equation and its accuracy can be verified using the numerical integral equation.
