Abstract

Purpose

This article aims to identify the critical barriers to university social responsibility (USR) implementation and explore the most significant obstacles in Vietnamese higher education practice.

Design/methodology/approach

To rank the vital barriers in USR implementation between public and private universities, the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) techniques have been employed. The authors collected data from twenty experts across Vietnamese universities, ten respondents for each kind correspondingly. All experts have at least five years of experience in terms of the USR regard.

Findings

Sixteen critical barriers to USR implementation have been identified in the context of Vietnamese universities. Among these barriers, those related to legal issues, USR knowledge and stakeholders are deemed the highest priority to overcome. However, the findings revealed that the lack of metrics to quantify USR benefits, local societal pressure and the complexity of USR adoption are comparatively easier to remove when implementing USR initiatives.

Practical implications

The article suggests that for Vietnamese universities to adopt USR initiatives successfully, higher education administrators and senior project managers should prioritize overcoming obstacles based on their university's capabilities.

Originality/value

This work is the first research considering the barriers and challenges of Vietnamese universities struggling to implement USR programs.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to systematically review the university social responsibility (USR) implementation from the empirical studies, which published during the period from 2004 to 2020.

Design/methodology/approach

The bibliometric method has been employed to review prior empirical research on higher education social responsibility topics.

Findings

These synthesis results confirmed that USR initiatives as an excellent tool to attain sustainability and enhance university performance worldwide. Universities in developed nations underline paying more attention to the core values in the long-term; meanwhile, their counterparts in transitional countries to pay more attention to short-term activities by focusing on stakeholders.

Research limitations/implications

The notable limitation is that in terms of the number of empirical papers employed as the data to analyze in this manuscript.

Practical implications

This paper's findings have described the USR implementations and how well to define USR adoption from the empirical studies globally. Thus, it has theoretical implications in enriching the USR knowledge and providing useful guidance for universities, then recommend new research directions in the future for other scholars.

Originality/value

This research is an initial attempt to systematize studies on USR implementation in universities between developed countries and developing nations.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the cognitive factors and e-social interactions that influence the green purchase intention of Vietnamese consumers.

Design/methodology/approach

This study conducted the survey with 453 samples of young consumers in Vietnam, using the partial least squares structural equation modeling approach to evaluate the measurement quality to deal with research objectives.

Findings

The findings of this study demonstrate that cognitive factors positively impact green purchase intentions in Vietnam. Moreover, the analysis revealed that the attitude variable played a mediating role in this model, whereas the social norms factor did not.

Research limitations/implications

This study presents several valuable findings on the green purchase intentions of young Vietnamese consumers. Therefore, the results can potentially advance and strengthen green purchasing theories in the Vietnamese market. Moreover, the recommendations indicate that cognitive factors and e-social interactions are crucial in shaping green purchasing intentions among Vietnamese consumers. Thus, it is suggested that the firms in the Vietnamese market focus on green marketing based on leveraging these factors.

Originality/value

This work provides a valuable contribution to the knowledge related to cognitive and e-social interactions among young Vietnamese consumers. It demonstrates the significant impact of these elements on green purchase intentions through e-commerce.

Abstract

Purpose

This article aims to evaluate total quality management (TQM)-enabling factors' impact on corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities and business performance through evidence from Vietnamese coffee firms.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on collecting data via in-depth face-to-face interviews with employees, who are working in the Vietnamese coffee companies. The partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) approach has been employed to investigate the relationship among the TQM-enabling factors, corporate social performance (CSP) and business performance.

Findings

A total of 13 TQM-enabling factors have been identified and divided into two categories, namely human and functional. The statistical results revealed a positive signal to remarkably enhance CSP and business performance by adopting those TQM-enabling factors into Vietnamese coffee firms.

Research limitations/implications

The framework model of this research should be evaluated in different contexts worldwide or in another sector that can further identify the TQM-enabling factor and the correlation among these constructs.

Practical implications

This article provides top managers of Vietnamese coffee firms with knowledge of TQM-enabling factors that may enable them to meet superior performance, including CSP, finance and reputation.

Originality/value

This is a unique study to employ the approach into the Vietnamese coffee industry context up-to-date, which is one of the essential sectors affecting Vietnam's sustainable development.

Abstract

Purpose

This research presents a study on the supply chain process of an Indian apparel industry considering various parameters involved. The study aims to identify the main parameters to improve the supply chain process and develop a comprehensive structural relationship to rank them to streamline the apparel supply chain process and business environment.

Design/methodology/approach

The team of five experts from this apparel industry was made to give scores to multiple parameters. The TOPSIS (Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) technique is used to develop the model for eleven key parameters and then rank them.

Findings

Based on the data analysis the planning, customer and warehouse storage have emerged as top three key parameters while the non-replenishment approach, push and pull strategy and manufacturing of the product are identified as the bottom three parameters from a hierarchy level. These parameters have been ranked based on their contributing attributes in this apparel supply chain process.

Research limitations/implications

The study provides an overall ranking of parameters and the implications are in the direction of helping the industry to improve its supply chain performances rather than focus only on productivity. Further, the key parameters are identified as critical inputs and show that the firms are being more proactive and well prepared comprised of the industry.

Originality/value

The study indicates that the key parameters are identified by this apparel brand to improve its supply chain process. The key supply chain process involves planning, manufacturing, distribution, end customer and returns logistics of the goods, etc. So, this research also provides the focused parameters on the supply chain performance received by end customer from the supplier and rank them for effectiveness and improve their overall organizational performance. It also provides a critical observation of their supply chain process improvement which includes different brand uses, strategies and approaches.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify the critical parameters of the Vietnam coffee industry and develop a comprehensive structural relationship to rank them for effective sustainable development.

Design/methodology/approach

The team of ten experts, having experience of over eight years in the field of various coffee industries in Vietnam, was created to give scores to multiple parameters. Technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) technique is used to develop the model for fifteen key parameters and then to rank them.

Findings

From the data analysis and results, marketing and brand innovation, product quality, strategic planning and implementation have emerged as top three key parameters while new technology development, supply chain and logistics management, and alliance-joint venture are identified as the bottom three parameters. The findings provide a rank of parameters that help to other coffee industries to identify their key parameters. Besides, the key parameters defined as necessary inputs show the firms more active and well-prepared comprised of ten companies.

Practical implications

The key parameters of the success of any organization are essential contributions. Aiming to improve organizational performance, metrics should be identified as the source of strength to achieve high productivity, profitability and sustainable business performance.

Originality/value

The emphasis of study on key parameters will help organizations to achieve competitive advantage and high productivity for high sustainability in an organizational context.

Abstract

Purpose

This research study aims to identify and rank the most substantial barriers to implementing green supply chain management (GSCM) in the Vietnamese agriculture industry.

Design/methodology/approach

The Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) techniques have been employed for this work to rank the critical GSCM barriers. The rankings were determined based on the expertise and input of ten experts from Vietnamese agriculture firms who participated as respondents.

Findings

This study has identified seven clusters of barriers, which encompass a total of 19 sub-barriers. Among these obstacles, the categories of financial costs and external stakeholders have emerged as the top priority barriers that require immediate attention and resolution. Meanwhile, the technology and strategic management clusters have a relatively weaker impact on GSCM implementation.

Practical implications

These findings provide valuable guidelines for the top managers in this sector to consider before systematically deciding on the GSCM implementation problems to improve performance and competitive advantage.

Originality/value

This work focuses on considering GSCM barriers for the Vietnamese agriculture industry; hence, it enriches the GSCM literature by offering perspectives from a transitional market, which results in variations in the barriers, categorization and importance ranking.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper presents and investigates a method named M×N‐ary chaotic pulse‐width‐position modulation (CPWPM) which is based on the combination of M‐ary chaotic pulse‐position modulation (CPPM) and N‐ary chaotic pulse‐width modulation (CPWM) in order to provide a better performance in noise‐affected environments as well as improve significantly bit rate.

Design/methodology/approach

Analysis of schemes for modulator and demodulator are presented in detail through describing the schemes of the individual methods and their combination. Theoretical evaluation of bit‐error rate (BER) performance in presence of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) is provided. Chaotic behavior with tent map in variation of modulation parameters is also investigated. In order to verify the theoretical analyses, numerical simulations are carried out and their results are reported.

Findings

Both evaluation and simulation results show that when the number of symbols increases, the bit rate is improved significantly but the BER performance is just slightly worse. This makes M×N‐ary CPWPM become an effective method for chaos‐based digital communication.

Originality/value

Although CPPM, CPWM and M‐ary modulation methods have been described in the literature separately, their combination is presented and investigated for the first time in this paper.
