Abstract

This chapter investigates the behavior of Reddit’s news subreddit users and the relationship between their sentiment on exchange rates. Using graphical models and natural language processing, hidden online communities among Reddit users are discovered. The data set used in this project is a mixture of text and categorical data from Reddit’s news subreddit. These data include the titles of the news pages, as well as a few user characteristics, in addition to users’ comments. This data set is an excellent resource to study user reaction to news since their comments are directly linked to the webpage contents. The model considered in this chapter is a hierarchical mixture model which is a generative model that detects overlapping networks using the sentiment from the user generated content. The advantage of this model is that the communities (or groups) are assumed to follow a Chinese restaurant process, and therefore it can automatically detect and cluster the communities. The hidden variables and the hyperparameters for this model are obtained using Gibbs sampling.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper proposes a framework for director evaluation in the context of Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs), taking into account the influences of traditional and modern Chinese ideologies.

Design/methodology/approach

Following the Delphi method, a series of semi-structured interviews were conducted with Chinese SOE directors.

Findings

The framework used has been validated by examining seven dimensions of virtue and four dimensions of competence functions in Chinese SOEs. Effective and representative characteristics of each dimension are identified through interviews.

Originality/value

First, through this research, indicators of virtue have been materialized and those of competence have been specified in a broader range. Second, this research provides advice for training of candidate directors whose experience were in private firms before they step in as SOE directors.

Abstract

Purpose

Cosserat continuum models are motivated by modeling size effects in materials with micro-structure. While elastic Cosserat continuum models can reproduce size effects in deformation stiffness, inelastic models are often used to capture localization and post failure behavior of materials. In application of inelastic Cosserat models, parameter determination is a difficult issue not fully addressed. The purpose of this paper is to discuss parameter-related characteristic lengths in Cosserat continuum modeling of granular materials.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on a Cosserat continuum extension of a hypoplastic model for granular media, interpretation of additional parameters are sought through analysis of simple one-dimensional shear. Governing equations are obtained, respectively, for small strain shear formation and for stead flow state in localized zone.

Findings

Two characteristic lengths are obtained analytically for granular materials: one governs the size effect near boundaries in shear deformation, the other scales the thickness of shear band in failure. While both characteristic lengths are proportional to the micro-structure length (the mean grain diameter), the former is related to the micro-stiffness parameter, and the latter depends on the micro-strength parameter. The results reveal a connection between size effects, the micro-structure length and the material properties. The work also provides a new perspective to inelastic Cosserat continuum models, as well as a possible way for determination micro-deformation and strength parameters.

Originality/value

The results reveal a connection between size effects, the micro-structure length and the material properties. The work provides a new perspective and an interpretation to the micro-deformation and strength parameters of inelastic Cosserat continuum models, as well as a possible way for determination of these parameters.

This paper aims to present the first empirical liquidity measurement of China’s agricultural futures markets and study time-varying liquidity dependence across markets.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present the first empirical liquidity measurement of China’s agricultural futures markets and study time-varying liquidity dependence across markets.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on both high- and low-frequency trading data of soybean and corn, this paper evaluates short-term liquidity adjustment in Chinese agricultural futures market measured by liquidity benchmark and long-term liquidity development measured by liquidity proxies.

Findings

By constructing comparisons, the authors identify the seminal paper of Fong, Holden and Trzcinka (2017) as the best low-frequency liquidity proxy in China’s agricultural futures market and capture similar historical patterns of the liquidity in soybean and corn markets. The authors further employ Copula-generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity models to investigate liquidity dependence between soybean and corn futures markets. Results show that cross-market liquidity dependence tends to be dynamic and asymmetric (in upper versus lower tails). The liquidity dependence becomes stronger when these markets experience negative shocks than positive shocks, indicating a concern on the contagion effect of liquidity risk under negative financial situations.

Originality/value

The findings of this study provide useful information on the dynamic evolution of liquidity pattern and cross-market dependence of fastest-growing agricultural futures in the largest emerging economy.

Abstract

We reviewed U.S. federal and state sexual harassment court cases involving a prior workplace romance between the plaintiff and alleged harasser. Results of our content analysis show that, unlike employees’ decisions, judges’ decisions can be predicted from legal but not ethically salient extralegal case features. Hence, when compared to prior research, our study reveals the following discrepancy: judges follow a traditional legal model, whereas employees follow an ethical model when making decisions about romance‐harassment cases. Our study also reveals that the mere presence (versus absence) of a prior romance reduces the likelihood of a plaintiff’s success in a harassment case. We discuss implications for management practice and research from the perspective of legal and ethical decision making.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper seeks to attempt to solve a decision‐making problem for breeding target character shown as an interval number.

Design/methodology/approach

A new comprehensive evaluation method is proposed based on similarity‐difference theory and interval number theory. Data from Winter Wheat Group I Variety Regional Test in Henan Province in 2009‐2010 were analysed using the proposed method.

Findings

The results showed that Zhou 99233 was a good variety; Yuxhan No. 7, An 05‐28, Xun K8, Jinyumai 378 and Zhoumai 18 were better ones; 08 luo 36,and Xuke 718 ordinary ones, and others worse ones. Based on this, the feasibility of the method was discussed. It showed that the proposed method had some obvious merits, such as simple arithmetic, convenient operation, flexible and practical, fast and effective.

Practical implications

The application of a live example indicated that its evaluation effect was satisfactory.

Originality/value

The paper succeeds in solving a decision‐making problem for breeding target character shown as an interval number.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to manifest how intellectual capital statement (ICS) adapts the Chinese management scenario. ICS has become a key management instrument for securing competitiveness and sustainable growth in European small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). However, if the approach rooted in Europe can have a good effect in China is still unknown.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper analyzes the reasons why ICS appears in Europe on a macro-level including innovation culture, innovation policy and innovation paths. These aspects are also characterized for China to describe the Chinese management scenario and innovation environment. Further, the paper divides ICS into three parts: model layer, indicators layer and operating layer on a micro-level. For the management scenario of China, it explains the adaptation of the three layers for application in a Chinese context.

Findings

The innovation culture, innovation policy and innovation paths are different in Europe and China. Therefore, the applications of model, indicator and operating layers of ICS are also different in China. The paper indicates that it needs some adjustments when applying ICS in Chinese enterprises.

Research limitations/implications

There are no application practices of ICS in China until now, so the analysis of this paper is based on the theoretical level. Moreover, in the part of innovation culture, the paper is limited to comparing the cultures of Germany and China.

Originality/value

This is the first paper which investigates the application of ICS in China.

This paper aims to improve the anti-corrosion of oil transportation pipelines.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to improve the anti-corrosion of oil transportation pipelines.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors provide a simple, efficient and inexpensive one-pot method for the novel thiadiazole derivatives synthesized using 2-substituted [1, 3, 4] thiadiazole, P2O5 and chloroacetic acid as materials by using XH-200A computer microwave solid-liquid phase synthesizer. The results showed that microwave heating can finish the reaction sufficiently in 20 min, and the optimal addition reaction conditions were n([1, 3, 4] thiadiazole):n(chloroacetic acid):P2O5 = 1:1.2:1.3. Under such conditions, the yield of the title products was 54 per cent.

Findings

The structure of the title compounds were all confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Water-based inhibitors corrosion behaviors on the stainless steel (SS) surface in 1 mol/L HCl solution at room temperature were also studied by weight loss methods and polarization curves. The results of the curves showed that an appropriate amount of 2a (40 ppm) can improve the anti-corrosion efficiency, whereas an excessive amount of 2a (e.g. 50 ppm) may not significantly increase the anti-corrosion efficiency.

Originality/value

In view of continuation of our studies, this paper presents microwave-assisted one-pot synthesis of 2-substitued [1, 3, 4] thiadiazole derivatives, and its anti-corrosion performance was tested by weight loss methods and polarization curves.

Abstract

Purpose

Public-private partnership (PPP) projects for construction waste recycling have become the main approach to construction waste treatment in China. Risk sharing and income distribution of PPP projects play a vital role in achieving project success. This paper is aimed at building a practical and effective risk sharing and income distribution model to achieve win–win situation among different stakeholders, thereby providing a systematic framework for governments to promote construction waste recycling.

Design/methodology/approach

Stakeholders of construction waste recycling PPP projects were reclassified according to the stakeholder theory. Best-worst multi–criteria decision-making method and comprehensive fuzzy evaluation method (BWM–FCE) risk assessment model was constructed to optimize the risk assessment of core stakeholders in construction waste recycling PPP projects. Based on the proposed risk evaluation model for construction waste recycling PPP projects, the Shapley value income distribution model was modified in combination with capital investment, contribution and project participation to obtain a more equitable and reasonable income distribution system.

Findings

The income distribution model showed that PPP Project Companies gained more transaction benefits, which proved that PPP Project Companies played an important role in the actual operation of PPP projects. The policy change risk, investment and financing risk and income risk were the most important risks and key factors for project success. Therefore, it is of great significance to strengthen the management of PPP Project Companies, and in the process of PPP implementation, the government should focus on preventing the risk of policy changes, investment and financing risks and income risks.

Practical implications

The findings from this study have advanced the application methods of risk sharing and income distribution for PPP projects and further improved PPP project-related theories. It helps to promote and rationalize fairness in construction waste recycling PPP projects and to achieve mutual benefits and win–win situation in risk sharing. It has also provided a reference for resource management of construction waste and laid a solid foundation for long-term development of construction waste resources.

Originality/value

PPP mode is an effective tool for construction waste recycling. How to allocate risks and distribute benefits has become the most important issue of waste recycling PPP projects, and also the key to project success. The originality of this study resides in its provision of a holistic approach of risk allocation and benefit distribution on construction waste PPP projects in China as a developing country. Accordingly, this study adds its value by promoting resource development of construction waste, extending an innovative risk allocation and benefit distribution method in PPP projects, and providing a valuable reference for policymakers and private investors who are planning to invest in PPP projects in China.
