This research was motivated by the strong desire of the researchers to make an impact on the protection and conservation of the environment and to make recommendations to enhance sustainable ecotourism development in the Karpaz peninsula, North Cyprus. The aim of the research was first to assess the current challenges faced by those involved in ecotourism and sustainable practices and secondly to develop solutions for these challenges.

Qualitative applied research was used with the objective of combining the concerns of local entrepreneurs with the knowledge of the members of the ecotourism associations and organisations to raise public awareness, empower locals, bring social change and improve the lives of the local community. Twenty in-depth interviews were conducted with ecotourism entrepreneurs, members of the Ecotourism Association, the Ecotourism Movement and the Karpaz Ecotourism Cooperative.

The results showed that the main challenges faced were a lack of finance, a lack of support from the local and national governments and a lack of knowledge regarding ecotourism and sustainable development amongst members of the local community. The solutions are educating the local community about agri-ecotourism, putting pressure on local and national governments to support agri-ecotourism, getting other tourism associations such as tour operators on their side and setting up farming cooperatives for farmers.

The value and originality of this study lie in the use of applied research approach with its social agenda of finding solutions which can be developed from the new knowledge which arises from the study.

This paper aims to uncover the critical factors relating to the enhancement of a natural tourism attraction from a visitor perspective.

The reviews (n = 336) of Golden Beach, Karpaz were collected from the Tripadvisor.com platform. Content analysis was conducted with Leximancer software to determine the themes relating to natural tourism attraction development.

The most widely highlighted themes in the data were environment, infrastructure, location, activities, visitors and locals. Pro-environmental visitors, the responsibilities of government and visitor management issues are discussed in relation to managing natural tourism attractions.

The paper has a number of practical implications for tourism stakeholders involved in developing sustainable destinations.

The aim of this study is to find out the perceptions of tourism experts on environmental impacts of accommodation investments in Bafra, Karpaz region.

Environmental impact assessment model is used to find out the impacts and a structured questionnaire is applied to tourism industry experts: top administrators of the concerned public offices, the representatives of related nongovernmental organizations, and the local administrators working in North Cyprus at various organizations.

This theme issue aims to persuade practitioners and academics of the need to collaborate in support of sustainable development and to identify and implement solutions that enable sustainable tourism development in North Cyprus. The strategic question underlying this theme issue is as follows: transitioning from unsustainable to sustainable: what are the solutions for tourism industry stakeholders in North Cyprus?

The key outcomes of this issue as they relate to the strategic question are reviewed, with particular reference to the contributions made to knowledge, policy and practice as well as the implications for future applied research concerning sustainable tourism development in North Cyprus and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in general.

Arising from the analysis and synthesis of recommendations, the following themes were proposed as critical concentration points for transitioning from unsustainable to sustainable in the North Cyprus tourism industry: the importance of sustainable tourism indicators (STIs), sustainable development through good governance, engaging cooperatives in urban areas for sustainable development, cultural heritage as a driving force for sustainable development, transportation as a tool for accessible and sustainable tourism, contemporary trends in technology for sustainable development and other factors that could facilitate sustainable tourism development.

This article provides a narrative analysis of the findings and makes recommendations for consideration by politicians and tourist industry executives. The solutions include advancing sustainable tourism practices through technology and increasing policymakers' and tourism stakeholders' consciousness. This paper and the collection of articles on which it is based are the first to examine various academic and practitioner approaches to solutions that would help to address the challenges arising and then facilitate sustainable tourism in North Cyprus.

Local government has a significant role to play in securing sustainable destination development. This paper aims to identify the strengths, weaknesses and challenges of municipalities in North Cyprus as they aspire to become sustainable Cittaslow tourism destinations.

A qualitative research approach was used to observe the perceptions of municipalities as they transition to become sustainable Cittaslow tourism destinations. The data have been obtained through in-depth interviews with the mayors of the municipalities that are members of the international Cittaslow network.

The results of the study show how alternative forms of tourism could help to improve the local economy. Also, the reasons for challenges and weaknesses are explained by the limited economic conditions of countries, high demand for mass tourism and lack of awareness about the importance of being a Cittaslow member.

This study reflects on the critical points in relation to the destination’s management at the local level. It also provides empirical indicators for achieving sustainable tourism development in North Cyprus.

The purpose of this paper is to draw on the collaborative work of tourism academics and practitioners featured in this issue.

A thematic analysis of the articles in this collection draws together the key outcomes related to the strategic question, with particular reference to the contribution to knowledge, policy and practice and the implications for further applied research in relation to sustainable tourism development in North Cyprus and small island developing states (SIDS) more generally.

The main finding is that insufficient and/or ineffective collaboration is one of the main obstacles in managing sustainable tourism in North Cyprus. More diversification of tourism products and better conservation of natural, cultural, economic and environmental resources are also needed. It is argued that this can be achieved through planning and policy improvements that focus on facilitating sustainable tourism development.

This paper reflects on the strategic question discussed in this theme issue, and it contains a descriptive analysis of the results and recommendations for policymakers and tourism sector practitioners. The recommendations include: the development of sustainable tourism practices by harnessing technological advances and by raising the awareness of policymakers and tourism stakeholders. This paper and the collection of articles that it draws on, is the first to explore different academic and practitioner perspectives on ways of overcoming obstacles and managing and developing sustainable tourism in the SIDS of North Cyprus.
