Abstract

Purpose

Centralised workplace and decentralised facilities management organisations combine several interacting functions. Different levels of a network service organisation are presented. The interacting functions are divided into three organisational levels: strategic clients, network integrators, and functional service units. The research paper demonstrates proposals, data collection plans, and relevant lines of questioning for future case studies and network analysis on the basis of the connections discovered in the pilot study environments.

Design/methodology/approach

Strategic, operational, and functional connections are analysed by studying formal and informal links between the managers responsible for various functions. The research was conducted with four pilot cases divided into four types of business units: a corporate headquarters (a financial services group); a large business unit/subsidiary (a telecommunications service provider); a medium business unit in the area of property management (a real estate investment company); and a small business unit (a technology park). The pilot cases function as a laboratory for the authors future case studies.

Findings

The article provides information how formal connections such as cross‐functional teams, task forces, and liaison roles create stronger ties between strategic planning and operational service delivery. The pilot study implies that without formal connections the functions of the network service organisation faces barriers to both vertical and horizontal interaction.

Research limitations/implications

Regardless of the popularity of the network analysis method, the conducted pilot cases and the found connections did not explain the whole value of centralised planning and strategic interaction between different workplace and service functions.

Originality/value

The network analysis takes place in a new facilities management environment. The article argues on a general level that post‐modernistic organisations, such as network, boundaryless, temporary, hybrid and virtual organisations, that are fragmented and managed informally can benefit from formal control mechanisms and meetings.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a method for better discovering topic evolution path and semantic relationship from the perspective of patent entity extraction and semantic representation. On the one hand, this paper identifies entities that have the same semantics but different expressions for accurate topic evolution path discovery. On the other hand, this paper reveals semantic relationships of topic evolution for better understanding what leads to topic evolution.

Design/methodology/approach

Firstly, a Bi-LSTM-CRF (bidirectional long short-term memory with conditional random field) model is designed for patent entity extraction and a representation learning method is constructed for patent entity representation. Secondly, a method based on knowledge outflow and inflow is proposed for discovering topic evolution path, by identifying and computing semantic common entities among topics. Finally, multiple semantic relationships among patent entities are pre-designed according to a specific domain, and then the semantic relationship among topics is identified through the proportion of different types of semantic relationships belonging to each topic.

Findings

In the field of UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle), this method identifies semantic common entities which have the same semantics but different expressions. In addition, this method better discovers topic evolution paths by comparison with a traditional method. Finally, this method identifies different semantic relationships among topics, which gives a detailed description for understanding and interpretation of topic evolution. These results prove that the proposed method is effective and useful. Simultaneously, this method is a preliminary study and still needs to be further investigated on other datasets using multiple emerging deep learning methods.

Originality/value

This work provides a new perspective for topic evolution analysis by considering semantic representation of patent entities. The authors design a method for discovering topic evolution paths by considering knowledge flow computed by semantic common entities, which can be easily extended to other patent mining-related tasks. This work is the first attempt to reveal semantic relationships among topics for a precise and detailed description of topic evolution.

Abstract

Devotes the entire journal issue to managing human behaviour in US industries, with examples drawn from the airline industry, trading industry, publishing industry, metal products industry, motor vehicle and parts industry, information technology industry, food industry, the airline industry in a turbulent environment, the automotive sales industry, and specialist retailing industry. Outlines the main features of each industry and the environment in which it is operating. Provides examples, insights and quotes from Chief Executive Officers, managers and employees on their organization’s recipe for success. Mentions the effect technology has had in some industries. Talks about skilled and semi‐skilled workers, worker empowerment and the formation of teams. Addresses also the issue of change and the training that is required to deal with it in different industry sectors. Discusses remuneration packages and incentives offered to motivate employees. Notes the importance of customers in the face of increased competition. Extracts from each industry sector the various human resource practices that companies employ to manage their employees effectively ‐ revealing that there is a wide diversity in approach and what is right for one industry sector would not work in another. Offers some advice for managers, but, overall, fails to summarize what constitutes effective means of managing human behaviour.

Abstract

Purpose

Automatic segmentation of brain tumor from medical images is a challenging task because of tumor's uneven and irregular shapes. In this paper, the authors propose an attention-based nested segmentation network, named DAU-Net. In total, two types of attention mechanisms are introduced to make the U-Net network focus on the key feature regions. The proposed network has a deep supervised encoder–decoder architecture and a redesigned dense skip connection. DAU-Net introduces an attention mechanism between convolutional blocks so that the features extracted at different levels can be merged with a task-related selection.

Design/methodology/approach

In the coding layer, the authors designed a channel attention module. It marks the importance of each feature graph in the segmentation task. In the decoding layer, the authors designed a spatial attention module. It marks the importance of different regional features. And by fusing features at different scales in the same coding layer, the network can fully extract the detailed information of the original image and learn more tumor boundary information.

Findings

To verify the effectiveness of the DAU-Net, experiments were carried out on the BRATS 2018 brain tumor magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) database. The segmentation results show that the proposed method has a high accuracy, with a Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) of 89% in the complete tumor, which is an improvement of 8.04 and 4.02%, compared with fully convolutional network (FCN) and U-Net, respectively.

Originality/value

The experimental results show that the proposed method has good performance in the segmentation of brain tumors. The proposed method has potential clinical applicability.

Abstract

According to John Grant’s New Marketing Manifesto, contemporary consumers “act their shoe size not their age” by resolutely refusing to grow up. They are not alone. Managers too are adopting a kiddy imperative, as the profusion of primers predicated on children’s literature – and storytelling generally – bears witness. Winnie the Pooh, the Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland and Hans Christian Andersen are the marketing gurus du jour, or so it seems. This paper adds to the juvenile agenda by examining the Harry Potter books, all four of which are replete with references to market‐place phenomena, and contending that scholarly sustenance can be drawn from J.K. Rowling’s remarkable, if ambivalent, marketing imagination.

Abstract

Purpose

One of the foremost research disciplines in medical image processing is to identify tumors, which is a challenging task practicing traditional methods. To overcome this, various research studies have been done effectively.

Design/methodology/approach

Medical image processing is evolving swiftly with modern technologies being developed every day. The advanced technologies improve medical fields in diagnosing diseases at the more advanced stages and serve to provide proper treatment.

Findings

Either the mass growth or abnormal growth concerning the cells in the brain is called a brain tumor.

Originality/value

The brain tumor can be categorized into two significant varieties, non-cancerous and cancerous. The carcinogenic tumors or cancerous is termed as malignant and non-carcinogenic tumors are termed benign tumors. If the cells in the tumor are healthy then it is a benign tumor, whereas, the abnormal growth or the uncontrollable growth of the cell is indicated as malignant. To find the tumor the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is carried out which is a tiresome and monotonous task done by a radiologist. In-order to diagnosis the brain tumor at the initial stage effectively with improved accuracy, the computer-aided robotic research technology is incorporated. There are numerous segmentation procedures, which help in identifying tumor cells from MRI images. It is necessary to select a proper segmentation mechanism to detect brain tumors effectively that can be aided with robotic systems. This research paper focuses on self-organizing map (SOM) by applying the adaptive network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). The execution measures are determined to employ the confusion matrix, accuracy, sensitivity, and furthermore, specificity. The results achieved conclusively explicate that the proposed model presents more reliable outcomes when compared to existing techniques.

Abstract

The field of industrial hygiene is very broad because it includes all kinds of occupational hazards in all industries. There are a lot of new things emerging every year due to changing technology and environment. Therefore, it is necessary for industrial hygiene practitioners to be able to anticipate the trends in industrial hygiene and keep up with new changes. Five trends that might be an indication of the future of industrial hygiene are considered. Moreover, some interesting examples about new developments in industrial hygiene are raised. One thing that could be inferred from these trends and examples is that information and high technology are increasingly being integrated into many industrial hygiene products, making them automated. As a result, many governmental regulations have to be revised in order to better reflect the current technology.
