The future development of the internet is not only heavily dependent on its technological evolution, but also on business sustainability for the interconnection ecosystem the web relies on, where various players characterized by fairly different economic structures and interests are coexisting. Therefore, in this paper the authors aim to propose a methodological framework for developing innovative interconnection business models.

Starting from a comprehensive as‐is analysis including the selection of appropriate service scenarios, market activities are abstracted through an archetypization process. Based on that, a value network for the future marketplace is proposed and makes it possible to design a business model for carriers, before, as last step, both the value network configurations and the to‐be business model are evaluated.

The framework to assess the future internet ecosystem depicts the interconnections value network, shedding light on its key activities; it proposes the establishment of a new dynamic interconnection marketplace based on an emerging interconnection value network where traditional and original roles coexist; and it evaluates the introduction of sending party pays and bid‐and‐ask solutions for governing the marketplace and its business models.

Rogers Communications Inc., one of Canada’s largest, diversified telecommunications enterprises, considered this option but chose instead to retain and centralise its extensive real estate interests into a single corporate real estate function. The following case study traces Rogers’ experience, from the starting point of distinct real estate portfolios managed by individual operating groups to the end point of a centralised, full‐service, corporate real estate function. It discusses various challenges faced by Rogers during the centralisation process and the corresponding measures and strategies that contributed to a successful outcome. It also suggests useful performance indicators to measure the value contributed by the corporate real estate function.

This paper responds to continuing arguments about the necessity for structural separation of the telecommunications local loop. It attempts to strike a balance by stressing that in fact a wide range of questions are yet to be answered. And the onus is fairly placed on the proponents of structural separation to provide persuasive answers proving that the drastic action they call for is necessary. In addition, many of the benefits of structural separation are unquantifiable and, indeed, conjectural, while the costs of this severe measure are more certain and substantial. Moreover, while seemingly simple in concept, there is a formidable range of difficulties relating to the implementation of structural separation.

The United States Federal Communications Commission has taken action or is considering taking action on several controversial issues that arise from the growth of the Internet. In analyzing these issues, the Commission is applying a voice‐centric circuit‐switched telecommunications model that is based on an outdated view of the world and is attempting to protect a regulatorily created system of artificial prices and subsidies. The Commission has failed to come to grips with a new state of the world, characterized by packet networks and data traffic. This has led to a series of decisions that are ill‐suited to the new environment.

The purpose of this paper is to study the performance of generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM) in some frequency selective fading channels. The exact symbol error rate (SER) expressions in Hoyt (Nakagami-q) and Weibull-v fading channels are derived. A GFDM transceiver simulation test bed is provided to validate the obtained analytical expressions.

Modern cellular system demands higher data rates, very low-latency transmissions and sensors with ultra low-power consumption. Current cellular systems of the fourth generation (4G) are not able to meet these emerging demands of future mobile communication systems. To address this requirement, GFDM, a novel multi-carrier modulation technique is proposed to satisfy the future needs of fifth generation technology. GFDM is a block-based transmission method where pulse shaping is applied circularly to individual subcarriers. Unlike traditional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, GFDM transmits multiple symbols per subcarrier. The authors have used the probability density function approach in solving the final analytical expressions.

Detailed analysis of GFDM performance under Hoyt-q, Weibull-v and Log-Normal Shadowing fading channels. Exact analytical formulae were derived which support the simulations carried out by authors and other authors. The exact dependence of SER on fading parameters and roll-off factor α in the raised cosine pulse shape filter was determined.
